Dick Van Dyke’s Greatest Mary Poppins Performances [VIDEO]

Dick Van Dyke was one of the 2021 Kennedy Center Awards honorees. The film and television legend's career was showcased as he accepted the award alongside fellow honorees Debbie Allen, Joan Baez, Garth Brooks and Midori.

At age 95, Van Dyke has a long resume in the entertainment industry dating back to the late 1950s, according to IMDB. One of his most popular roles was in the 1964 film “Mary Poppins,” in which he played both the role of jack-of-all-trades Bert the chimney sweep and the role of bank boss Mr. Dawes.

In an interview with CNN, Van Dyke once said “Mary Poppins” was his favorite role in his six-decade career. “I probably enjoyed the role in Mary Poppins the most,” he said. “It was so much fun. That's my favorite movie too.”

The Oscar-winning classic film was a great example of Van Dyke's singing and dancing skills.

Here's a look back at some of Van Dyke's most famous appearances in Mary Poppins.

“Pavement Artist/Chim Chim Cher-ee”

One of the most famous songs from “Mary Poppins” is “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” the famous duet by Van Dyke and Julie Andrews. But Van Dyke also performed a solo version of the song while his character did his chalk drawings on the streets of London.

The character Bert didn't exist until composers Robert and Richard Sherman wrote the song. They were inspired by a sketch of a whistling chimney sweep and initially thought Mary Poppins would sing the song to the children, but Walt Disney intervened and suggested that it would be better to create a new character.

“Walt said, 'You know, we've got this guy who paints pictures on the sidewalk, and we've got a one-man band, and we've got a guy who flies kites – why don't we make them all one guy and call him Bert? and he will also be the chimney sweep?” Robert Sherman once said, according to SongFacts.

Who can forget “Step in Time,” Van Dyke’s famous number featuring Bert and the other chimney sweeps dancing and singing on London rooftops? It was one of the liveliest routines in the film.

More than 55 years later, Van Dyke's legendary “Mary Poppins” performance was also remembered when professional dancer Derek Hough performed a version of “Step in Time” in his honor.

“Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” with Julie Andrews

One of the hardest song titles to pronounce – let alone spell – “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” made its debut in the Mary Poppins story when the Sherman brothers adapted PL Travers' book into a feature film, according to BBC News. The magical nanny Mary and her chimney sweep buddy recited the tongue twister word several times in one of the film's most famous sequences.

Richard Sherman once said the word came about the same way he and his brother invented words as children.

“We used to come up with the big double-speak words, we could think of a big offensive word for the kids and that's where it started,” he said. “We started with 'hideous,' and then you can sound smart and be precocious at the same time. We had “precocious” and “hideous” and we wanted something super colossal and that's cheesy, so we took “super” and doubled over to go “califragilistic,” which means nothing, it just came out that way. That’s what we did for two weeks in a nutshell.”

“I Love to Laugh” with Ed Wynn and Julie Andrews

Van Dyke showed off his Cockney accent more than his singing skills in the “I Love to Laugh” sequence. He told CNN that he focused primarily on dancing for the film, and the filmmakers gave him a vocal coach, who turned out to be Irish.

“And his Cockney wasn’t much better than mine,” Van Dyke said.

“While I was taking the picture, no one was making fun of me about the accent, but I definitely took it in afterwards,” he added.

Of the flights he took in the film – and particularly during this song – Van Dyke told the New York Times: “We had to fly all the time. Once [on the original movie] We were all up there playing “I Love to Laugh” and they were on their lunch break and everyone left and forgot we were DJing there. It must have taken 15 minutes for someone to notice and come and abandon us.”

EXCLUSIVE: Video reveals contractor stealing from San Francisco’s vacant 33 Tehama Residences

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Residents of a San Francisco building that has flooded twice since June report theft and people breaking into their vacant apartments.

At 2:27 a.m. on June 10, Kate Sutherland received a notification. A person was discovered in her empty apartment at Tehama 33.

“When I opened the video, I happened to see a person strolling through my device and taking a video with a flash. That sent goosebumps down my spine,” Sutherland said.

The eerie video showed what looked like a person moving slowly in the dark. The building was empty for several days after a burst water pipe flooded the building. Kate ended her lease four days after recording this video.

Luz Pena: “How did they explain what happened?”

Kate Sutherland: “You really know how to explain it. They kept saying it was unauthorized.”

Kate's story is just the tip of the iceberg. This week another resident caught a contractor using the toilet in one of the apartments and taking something on the way out. Hines, the real estate company that owns the building, confirmed the theft on Monday, saying in part:

“It was recorded that a contractor performing repairs on one of the units at Tehama 33 removed items from the unit. This contractor was terminated immediately.”

In the case of Stephanie Sunwoo, thousands of dollars disappeared from her bank account this morning.

“Two fraudulent checks were cashed on my account. They both total over $1,500 each in my bank account,” said Stephanie Sunwoo, 33, a Tehama resident.

Residents of the San Francisco high-rise that was damaged by a massive burst water pipe may not be able to move back in until the end of this year or possibly 2023.

Sunwoo says her entire checkbook is in her bedside table in her empty apartment.

“The thought of someone going through the bedside table in my bedroom, taking a box full of checkbooks is really alarming, and now I'm very afraid of identity theft,” Sunwoo said.

Residents also report theft in the bike room.

“Our bike room was completely looted. There are remains of people's bicycles. Some people’s bikes are completely missing,” Sunwoo said.

Regarding theft, Hines said, among other things:

“While we have not yet confirmed the validity of these claims, we have temporarily withdrawn all contractors’ access to housing units while we work on a solution to increase safety measures.”

And for residents like Maarya Abbasi, these reports make them want to get all their belongings out of the building quickly. She says Hines makes it difficult.

“It just feels like a nightmare that never ends,” Maarya Abbasi said.

Hines does not allow residents to enter the building and only lets them use Hines-hired movers.

“That's something I asked Tehama too: 'What can we do if our property is damaged?' I was just told we had to get our own renters insurance,” Abbasi said.

Hines said they are providing locked storage units for residents who are scheduled to move out by the end of the month.

As for the theft of bikes, they said they did not know if bikes were stolen, but said a large number of bikes were left behind.

We also followed up and asked about the resident who said her checkbook was stolen and they said it was a police matter.

Statement from Hines on 33 Tehama – August 16, 2022

“It has come to our attention that on August 15, 2022, a contractor performing repairs on one of the units at 33 Tehama was on record removing items from the unit. This contractor was terminated with immediate effect. All construction workers in 33 Tehama are licensed. We are bonded and insured and work with reputable subcontractors. We ensure security on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and keeping our residents' belongings safe is our top priority.

There are very few allegations of other security issues in the units. Although we have not yet confirmed the validity of these claims, we have temporarily withdrawn all contractors' access to housing units while we work on a solution to increase security measures. These measures include, at a minimum, a comprehensive video surveillance system to capture footage while contractors are in residents' units to protect their property on an active construction site.

When we learned that the timeline for re-occupancy of 33 Tehama would extend into 2023 and informed residents that they would need to find alternative housing, we began working with the city government and local building owners to find housing for our am to secure most vulnerable residents, which include residents of the 60 units below market rate (BMR) at 33 Tehama. We were successful with the city, who responded promptly to the request. We continue to work with local building owners to find housing solutions for these residents. We hope that building owners in San Francisco with vacant BMR units will agree to support these 33 Tehama residents by offering them housing at this time.

As financial and lodging assistance for 33 Tehama residents ends tomorrow, August 17th, we have extended financial and hotel lodging assistance to tenants who meet certain income requirements through August 31st. We continue to work closely with building owners and in Partner with Supervisor Dorsey and other government officials to find a longer-term solution. “

Spring Summer season Pronounces Debut Album ‘T.E.A.R.S,’ Shares “Mountaineer” Video

Spring Summer is the recording project of San Francisco-based musician Jennifer Furches, who spent a large part of her career in the aughts making a name for herself by touring and playing with musicians like Cass McCombs, Coconut Records, and Ben Lee. About a year ago, in 2021, she finally launched her own solo career and released a couple of delicate, folksy guitar songs on Dangerbird Records. Now, Furches announces the arrival of her forthcoming debut album, TEARS, out July 15 and produced closely by friend Jenny lee Lindberg of Warpaint.

Below, NYLON exclusively premieres the video of the album’s lead single, “Mountaineer,” a sturdier and more robust version of the indie rock first previewed by the musician and multi-instrumentalist. Over shuffling guitar and drums infused with a crisp and clean feeling, Furches works through overcoming life’s obstacles with a partner while maintaining self-preservation through writerly, graceful lyricism. “I’m tough as nails/ I am a mountaineer/ I will climb these jagged peaks and leave the valleys for you dear,” she sings. Any hint of tension in its lyrics is tempered by the song’s grand and sweeping sound, like you’re also perched on the mountain peak next to her.

Of the song, Furches writes in an email: “There’s a running theme on the album of losing yourself in another person, and this song is about the push-and-pull between the feeling of ‘I would do anything for you’ and ‘ I can’t do anything for you, I need to be strong and do things for me.’”

In its miniature-filled music video directed by Jon Sortland, she captures that feeling of towering above everything else quite literally, recreating a haunting but cozy world through dollhouse sets and beautifully illustrated natural landscapes. Furches herself is seen interacting with the world through clever editing that makes it look like she’s inhabiting the sets, but is simultaneously caught setting them up in the first place — adding another meaningful layer to the song’s contemplation.

What are you up to right now — describe your surroundings.

I’m sitting in my practice space in our garage in San Francisco. There’s nothing soundproof about it and I live on an echo-y alley, but luckily the neighbors don’t seem to mind that the kids and I have started a 90’s cover band.

What’s the story behind your new song, “Mountaineer”?

I wrote the first incarnation of Mountaineer before I had kids. I was 4 years into a relationship, and kind of passing that puppy-love stage where you want to just do everything for someone and be with them all the time… and starting to feel like I had lost — or forgotten — about myself. Then after kids, many more years into the same relationship, the same feelings were hitting me. It’s so easy in life and love to give yourself away. I had to make a very conscious effort to find some balance.

I had never done anything with that song, but it was suddenly resonating heavily with me again. I played it for my cousin Jason and he had all these great suggestions to make it something new which appealed to me. I loved the feeling of it having lived so long as one song, and then getting to transform it into another version of itself. As I guess I wished to do. (Thanks to Jen we recorded the old version, too — we’ll put that out one day!)

How did you land on the idea of using miniatures for your “Mountaineer” video; they’re really having a moment right now.

I feel like miniatures have been heavily utilized forever! But I guess you mean maybe they’re being used in a more obvious way, as we did, rather than the old-school Hollywood trickery?

You know — I just loved Jon Sortland’s work so much! He made all these great videos for his band The Shins (a few of which use miniatures) and he is just constantly making things that make me laugh and reel me in. I feel like he finds a wonderful way of mixing the magical world and real life. So the miniatures came from his experience with them… but in the end when COVID hit and we ultimately had to call on my husband Roman to shoot my part of the video, I thought it was kind of a fun twist of fate because Roman has shot a lot of second unit and special effects work through his career which often involves miniatures — so I felt like there was a nice connection there between the two of them.

After spending a large part of your career playing with other artists, how does it feel to be releasing music of your own?

Great! For so many years I was scared to record my own music. It was so much easier to be a sort of hired gun (and of course also get to play with musicians I admired). But now I just want to do hard things. I want to learn and challenge myself. It’s all one big puzzle… and I love puzzles!

In the spirit of the song, what’s the last mountain you climbed and do you have a favorite?

Last summer: Chimney Rock outside of Asheville, NC with my dad and my sister Amanda. I’m from North Carolina and spent my life in those mountains. They hold a special place in my heart.

Plunjr brings plumbing fixes to video chat throughout coronavirus

Half Moon Bay’s Plunjr has an innovative way of addressing plumbing issues amid the coronavirus pandemic and could potentially change the industry’s business model.

The recently launched mobile app uses live video calls to assist customers as they fix their own plumbing problems, rather than sending a plumber to homes. The app gives people immediate access to union technicians and minimizes the chance of coronavirus exposure, with a lower cost.

“This is going to do good things in communities and change how people do plumbing forever,” said co-founder Aaron Gianni.

Plunjr’s prices are low compared to traditional plumbers, which average around $500 for an in-person visit to the Bay Area, said Plunjr co-founder Andrew Turner.

Plunjr’s video calls average about $45, based on $3 per minute for a 15-minute calls. Until shelter-in-place orders are lifted, the app is dropping its price to a penny per minute. However, customers must also pay for parts, which can be shipped or picked up at any of the country’s 1,500 Ferguson Plumbing Supply stores.

After 18 months of coding and building the app, Plunjr launched a beta test in December. The company has more than 200 customers and the founders believe usage will rise as people try more do-it-yourself projects during the pandemic.

The company isn’t profitable, but Gianni hopes to be profitable by next year and would need to average about 100 calls per day to reach the goal. He wants to average 500 calls per day by 2022 and 1,000 per day by 2023.

Plunjr hopes to build out a network of partners across the country and is in talks with Ben Franklin Plumbing in Novato.

“I know that sounds like a lot, but Larratt Bros., does 50 calls a week with two plumbers,” Gianni said. “If we can build a network of plumbing companies using this, adding a tool to their bucket, we can expand across the nation.”

Gianni, 38, has been a plumber since 2001 and bought Bayview’s Larratt Bros. Plumbing in 2014. Gianni and Turner haven’t taken any outside funding and invested about $500,000 of their own money in the past three years.

“That’s a lot of money for two guys kind of scraping around,” Gianni said. “I don’t have 500 grand sitting around. I’ve given up a second home and other investments. That 500 grand probably could have done me a whole lot better in the stock market.”

Gianni’s parents owned and operated a restaurant supply shop and a debris-removing company during his childhood.

Gianni drives to work at 4 am every day with the radio silenced and a cup of coffee in his hand. The idea for Plunjr came to him during one of those silent drives when he was working as a plumber in 2017.

He called Turner, who had a background in technology sales, including working about 11 years for AT&T and working for Cloud-based videoconferencing service BlueJeans Network. The two got together at Half Moon Bay Brewing Company, and in front of the fire pit, Gianni presented the idea on a cocktail napkin.

“There’s really something here,” Turner thought to himself.

Even with a mortgage to pay and three young daughters on his mind, Turner decided to go to work for Gianni.

About a year-and-a-half ago, Gianni got a phone call at about 4 pm on a Friday. A woman had a problem with her faucet and needed immediate help at her Palo Alto home in advance of a party scheduled for the next day.

Knowing he couldn’t get from San Francisco to Palo Alto to diagnose the problem, buy the parts and complete the repair before the close of business, Gianni asked the woman to do a FaceTime call. He talked her through the repair.

“After I finished that call, I was like: ‘I’ve got to get on this,'” he said.

A customer downloads the app, creates a profile, and chooses either to talk to a technician immediately or to schedule a video call. The plumber tells the customer where to aim the camera phone, so the problem can be diagnosed, and coaching can begin.

Just by having the customer hold a pencil as reference, Gianni said he can tell the difference between one-quarter, three-eighths and five-eighths supply lines.

The technician talks the customer through the repair or explains the needed parts. Then, a follow-up video call may be scheduled to complete the project.

If the customer still can’t fix the problem, Plunjr dispatches a plumber. But most calls don’t get that far, according to the company.

Kathy Winslow, a retired hospital administrator from Boston, moved to the Bay Area about 10 years ago. In January, her dishwasher was gushing water, so she used the app.

Gianni talked to Winslow’s husband through pulling the dishwasher away from the wall and reconnecting a hose as she directed the camera phone. Within 30 minutes, the problem was solved.

“That’s one of the beauties of it,” Winslow said. “You call, you get an answer, and you’re helped immediately.”

Video reveals climber trapped close to San Francisco’s Cliff Home

A man who climbed down near San Francisco’s legendary Cliff House was trapped on a cliff ledge early Monday morning, necessitating a rescue by fire officials.

At around 7:40 am, the San Francisco Fire Department embarked on a cliff rescue after an adult man scaled down rocks near the restaurant and ended up on the ledge near a wall covered in graffiti.

“The male was curious and climbed rocks placing himself in a need for being rescued,” San Francisco Fire spokesperson Lt. Jonathan Baxter told SFGATE in an emailed statement Monday afternoon.

Videos posted on Twitter within the hour show a member of the fire crew affixing rescue rope onto the man and scaling the wall together. The rescue was completed just after 8 am

The man was “safely rescued and unharmed,” said Baxter.

“This is why we ask that you always stay on designated paths or trails,” Baxter added.

Last year, the National Park Service confirmed the fate of the historic San Francisco fixture: A new restaurant will be installed by the end of 2022; a decision will be made as to who the lessee will be in the coming months.

Baxter did not identify the victim, stating that “he is considered a victim.”

San Francisco children were recorded on video having to walk past what appeared to be one of the city’s open-air drug dens on their way home from school.

Ricci Wynne posted the video on Twitter last week, writing that the students were getting off the 14 transit line on 8th and Mission Streets when they encountered what appeared to be the homeless encampment sprawled across the sidewalk.

“This is no back ally [sic],” Wynne wrote. “This is a main artery in our city that has been hijacked bye [sic] drug dealers and now it is pure filth!”

The video shows a stream of children and other passengers getting off the public transit system before the camera cuts to the sidewalk, where a group of apparently homeless people was gathered.

Wynne added, “Now ask yourself this question would you want your children to walk through this squalor just to get home from school?”

Wynne tagged a slew of politicians in the post including President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein and San Francisco Mayor London Breed.

Describing himself as a recovering drug addict, Wynne frequently posts videos showing drug addicts and drug paraphernalia on the city streets.

The area where Wynne says the video was taken is nearby the Linkage Center in the city’s Tenderloin District, a neighborhood notorious for its rampant drug abuse.

The Linkage Center was intended to connect homeless people and drug addicts with social services, but multiple accounts have claimed people were instead shooting up or smoking fentanyl inside.

San Francisco logged 650 overdose deaths last year and at least 700 in 2020. Recovery advocates have said that every one of those deaths was preventable.

Last summer: Chimney Rock outside of Asheville, NC with my dad and my sister Amanda. I’m from North Carolina and spent my life in those mountains. They hold a special place in my heart.

San Francisco police cease self-driving automobile – and discover no one inside, video reveals | Self-driving automobiles

A video recently posted online shows what happens when police try to apprehend an autonomous vehicle – only to find nobody inside.

Police in San Francisco stopped a vehicle operated by Cruise, an autonomous car company backed by General Motors, in a video posted on April 1. Officers approached the car, which had been driving without headlights, only to find it was empty.

“Ain’t nobody in it – this is crazy,” a bystander can be heard saying in the video. The car then speeds away to the other side of the intersection, leaving the police behind.

The video, which has since circulated widely on social media, prompted inevitable jokes. “Welcome to the future,” quipped one Twitter user.

Cruise is working to deploy its autonomous driving technology for ride-hailing purposes, transporting riders around the city without a driver. It has been testing its vehicles with a backup driver in the front seat since 2015, but it started allowing users to hail driverless cars in San Francisco in November 2021.

The company said in a tweet that the vehicle had behaved as expected by moving to a safer location on the other side of the intersection where police were able to address their concerns.

“Our AV yielded to the police vehicle, then pulled over to the nearest safe location, as intended. An officer contacted Cruise personnel and no citation was issued,” Cruise said on its corporate Twitter account.

A Cruise spokeswoman, Tiffany Testo, told the Guardian that the vehicle “did not have its headlights on because of a human error, which was the reason the SFPD approached it, and we have fixed the issue that led to this”. She added that the company offered a phone number for police to call with questions any time a vehicle is pulled over. The SFPD did not immediately respond to request for comment about the incident or about its policies for driverless vehicles.

The viral video underscores the bumps in the road as companies race to put fully autonomous vehicles on streets.

The Cruise video comes just weeks after Waymo, another autonomous car company, announced it would deploy driverless vehicles in San Francisco. Waymo has been working on autonomous driving technology for more than a decade and running fully driverless rides in Arizona for more than a year.

But driverless car glitches have made headlines in the past, including a Waymo vehicle that became stuck at an intersection and required rescue.

Waymo said in March it would allow passengers in its driverless cars on a trial basis. To partake, interested riders must apply for a wait list and sign non-disclosure agreements to get early access.

Nuro, another autonomous car company, also has a permit for driverless vehicles in San Francisco, but is using it for self-driving delivery services rather than passenger rides. It is already making driverless deliveries in Mountain View, California.

Other driverless car firms are working on their own technology, including Elon Musk’s electronic car company Tesla and Aurora Innovation, a company based in Pittsburgh.
