The former Northern California home of Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry and his wife, television cooking personality Ayesha Curry — with panoramic views of the San Francisco skyline, the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge — is for sale for $1.69 million .

According to public records, the Currys bought the Oakland bayside penthouse at The Ellington apartment complex in 2012 for $1.475 million, a year after they married and before the Warriors became an NBA dynasty.

The sellers purchased the home from the couple in 2014 for $1.5 million.

“This is a real hit!” says the official property list.

The two-story penthouse's floor-to-ceiling windows also offer views of downtown Oakland and Mount Tamalpais. The luxurious 2,084 square feet of living space includes three bedrooms, four bathrooms and a gourmet kitchen.

There is plenty of outdoor space. There are three balconies and an oversized patio.

Three parking spaces and an electric vehicle charger are among The Ellington's many amenities, including 24-hour concierge services, a fitness center, a club room, a pool and a spa.

Karen Gartz of Compass is the listing agent.

RICHMOND — Can you ferry a boat, sling delicious hors d’oeuvres, tidy up bedsheets and make guests feel at home in a five-room inn in the middle of San Pablo Bay?

If so, the picturesque East Brother Light Station may have a job for you.

Applications are open for two new innkeepers to keep the nearly 150-year-old lighthouse up and running for two years, starting in April 2023.

“People who typically apply have been in the hospitality industry and they like working with the public; they’re people who have worked on boats for a long time,” said Tom Butt, Richmond’s outgoing mayor and president of the East Brother Light Station Inc., which runs the lighthouse. “It’s very attractive for those type of people: Boats and lighthouses are like peanut butter and jelly.”

Perched on a rocky mound near Point Molate and visible from the Richmond Bridge, the iconic bed-and-breakfast offers beautiful panoramic views of the San Francisco and San Pablo bays.

In addition to seasonal day visits and special events, visitors on the island can enjoy rented-out rooms inside the goldenrod California Victorian structures — surrounded by miles of shimmering salt water and the occasional harbor seal — Thursday through Sunday for $475 to $525 a night.

While it’s a dream job for some, the role is not an breeze or some cushy, luxury getaway.

“It’s a really cool place, but the one thing the job doesn’t allow you to do is sit around and drink piña coladas while enjoying the view,” Butt said. “It’s hard work.”

Innkeepers must assume the role of maid, boat captain, gift shop attendant, tour guide, host and chef with “high-quality culinary experience” to prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner. Applicants who are smokers, live with children or have pets will not be selected.

Additionally, at least one of the innkeepers must have a Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential boat operator’s license, in order to safely ferry guests from the launch at 1900 Stenmark Drive in Richmond to East Brother Island and back.

Two previous innkeepers, Tiffany Danse and Tyler Waterson, estimated they worked at least 80 to 90 hours each week to maintain East Brother Light Station, which is a registered California Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The current innkeepers, Bryan and Stephanie Wesolek, will be leaving after their two-year commitment comes to a close at the end of March.

The newly chosen duo, which does not have to be a romantic couple, will be compensated with a majority portion of the profits of the inn, after the expenses of operation are subtracted. On top of benefits like a health care plan, two weeks of vacation and onsite living quarters on the nearly three-quarters of an acre island, the keepers’ gross pay in 2021-22 was $140,000 split between them.

Butt said there are other perks, too, such as tips and networking opportunities to land future gigs. “You might make me your future employer while working,” he said.

Butt said the staff is supported by volunteers who help out with maintenance of the facilities, such as painting and repair jobs around the grounds. While the $300,000 nonprofit has a list of 300 volunteers, there is a core group of a dozen stewards who work the grounds weekly, Butt said.

And without access to Wi-Fi, reliable cell service and plumbing — aside from a rainwater catchment and cistern system — the job takes the concept of “remote work” to another level.

The nonprofit, which Butt founded, has leased the island from the Coast Guard and run the business, primarily as a means to afford costly repairs and upkeep.

The restored inn was opened in 1980, a few decades after the Coast Guard decommissioned the island’s historic lighthouse keepers in favor of automatic boat beacons.

More information about East Brother Light Station and the innkeeper job can be found at www.ebls.org, and questions may be emailed to EastBrotherLightStationJOBS@gmail.com.

A one-of-a-kind midcentury modern home in San Francisco designed for famed furniture designer Jules Heumann was sold after just 10 days on the market.

The prized property perched above the city with astonishing views was snapped up at full price for $3,750,000 in a cash deal.

The spectacular, trilevel beauty was custom-designed in 1965 by the San Francisco architecture firm Marquis & Stoller.

The space features vaulted ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows to take in the views that span from the Pacific Ocean and Golden Gate Bridge to Marin and the East Bay.

‘amazing home’

“This is one of the most amazing homes I have ever sold,” says listing agent Trecia Knapp, of Sotheby’s International Realty. “It is encased in original redwood in the main living room and has these sweeping views that are just stunning.”

From the interior walls of windows to the exterior decks, you can take in views from nearly every room in the 3,258-square-foot house.

In addition to being a famous furniture designer, Heumann also had a thing for cars. He served as chairman of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, a renowned car show.

“There is a three-car garage here, and one has a double bay,” Knapp says. “He put air conditioning in the garage! When you walk in, you can almost feel him tinkering. He also had a bay built under the garage so you can tinker on your cars. He even put an elevator in the home; that’s how forward – thinking hey what.”

The car collector died in 2017 at the age of 93. The sellers bought the home from Heumann’s estate in 2018.

“During COVID, their lives changed and they had to move out of town for work,” Knapp says. “They would not have left if they didn’t have to relocate for their jobs.”

The property is a standalone house in San Francisco, which makes it a coveted rarity. Plus, the locale is off the beaten path.

“It’s located in Clarendon Heights, which I would call the ‘undiscovered Gold Coast of San Francisco,'” Knapp says. “It’s a vertical house, so it captures all of the views. One of the founders of Instagram also lives on St. Germain Avenue.”

San Francisco is known for its fog, and when it rolls in, Knapp says, “The home is like being in a beautiful cocoon to keep you warm and cozy.”

While it’s a dream job for some, the role is not an (ocean) breeze or some cushy, luxury getaway.

RICHMOND, CA – JAN. 27: A barge is pushed through the narrows between the East Brothers Light Station and Point San Pablo, part of the coastline of Richmond, Calif., Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019. (Karl Mondon/Bay Area News Group)

And without access to Wi-Fi, reliable cell service and plumbing — aside from a rainwater catchment and cistern system — the job takes the concept of “remote work” to another level.

The nonprofit East Brother Light Station Inc., which Richmond’s outgoing Mayor Tom Butt founded and now serves as board president, has leased the island from the Coast Guard and run the business, primarily as a means to afford costly repairs and upkeep.

The House:

608 Sanchez St in San Francisco

What makes it unique:

Designed by noted Bay Area architect Violeta Autumn, this three-bedroom, multi-level property in San Francisco may look as though it was plucked off a street in nearby Sausalito. Autumn designed her own Sausalito home in a similar “organic architectural” style, a philosophy of design coined by Frank Lloyd Wright that refers to buildings that are integrated with — and often inspired by — their natural surroundings. This home, just steps away from San Francisco’s Mission Dolores Park, seeks to do that with wood paneling and floor-to-ceiling windows that give out onto 360-degree views of the city. The home is the upper unit in a two-condo building, with a unique spiral staircase connecting its floors, multiple fireplaces, and plenty of outdoor and rooftop areas well suited for entertaining. With such unique features, the listing garnered plenty of interest, even though it came during a bit of a lull in the San Francisco real estate market. Even before the recent surge in mortgage rates and stock market pullback, there was a noticeable slowdown in the market beginning in early May, said City Real Estate real estate agent Lily Johnson, who listed 608 Sanchez. “It’s going to be a slow summer for SF,” said Johnson, who added that if agents were used to getting more than 10 offers on properties, they’re now lucky to get just a few. Many buyers now are exhausted by the prospect of bidding wars, and some sellers are being encouraged to pause on listing their properties until the fall. Those dynamics are paving the way for what may be more of a buyer’s market than it has been in some time, at least for a few months. Still, these trends did not keep home shoppers from checking out 608 Sanchez, which saw 200 people come through its first open house and had 45 disclosure packages out.

OAKLAND (KPIX 5) – A federal judge is set to ease decades of federal oversight of the Oakland Police Department. While even one of the department’s harshest critics says progress has been made, others are skeptical of the possible move.

For nearly 20 years, a federal monitor has been overseeing the department. “The Riders” police scandal in the early 2000s led to the arranged federal oversight agreement, and the city paying out millions to plaintiffs because of police misconduct.

READ MORE: Payton Lifts Warriors To NBA Playoff Series Clinching Win Over Denver

Bishop Bob Jackson has been leading a church congregation in East Oakland for nearly 40 years. He’s seen how street violence has torn the community apart.

“The bullets are flying everywhere. Innocent people being hit a lot of times. I mean, it’s almost like Ukraine right about now,” said Jackson.

He believes recent changes within the Oakland Police Department are making a difference.

“It’s better now because they’ve added a new district and added more police officers so they’re able to do more with fighting crime,” said Jackson.

READ MORE: Bay Bridge Series: Pinder’s Leadoff Homer Enough; A’s Shut Out Giants

Bishop supports the removal of the federal oversight and thinks that money can be better spent to support communities like East Oakland.

But Kat Brooks, who founded the Anti-Police Terror Project after the killing of Oscar Grant at the Fruitvale BART Station in 2009, is wary of the move.

“They’re not capable of stopping their officers from brutalizing our community members, and I have concerns,” Brooks told KPIX 5. “There’s a whole global movement around policing in America and the brutality of it.”

Civil rights attorney John Burris, whose work helped set up the federal oversight arrangement, told KPIX 5, “I think the department is on the right track. It’s a department with a lot of different moving parts. It’s not perfect and it probably never will be perfect.”

Burris said OPD has addressed issues like racial profiling, unnecessary use of force, and other requirements under the federal agreement.

MORE NEWS: COVID: After Optimistic Comment, Fauci Cautions Pandemic Isn’t Over in US

When asked how the department is today compared to the 10, 20 years ago, Burris said, “It’s a different department in that sense. They have policies and procedures in place to hold people accountable, when in fact they don’t follow the basic rules.”

When Democrats went soft on crime in the 1960s and ’70s, it took two Republican presidential landslides and almost two decades for the party to recover its sense. In San Francisco, Mayor London Breed is showing that the turnaround can happen in less than two years.

Just last July, Mayor Breed announced $120 million in budget cuts to the police and promised to dedicate these funds to achieving racial equality. She was defunding the police and “prioritizing investments in the African American community around housing, mental health and wellness, workforce development, economic justice, education, advocacy and accountability.”

Breed was joined in this program by Chesa Boudin, San Francisco’s new George Soros–backed district attorney. He reduced San Francisco’s jail population by 25 percent in one year and pressured prosecutors to go soft on crime. He ended cash-bail programs and replaced them with a lenient program of discretion. He also used his office to lobby for the commutation and release of his own father from prison. Boudin is the son of the Weather Underground’s David Gilbert, who took part in the 1981 Brink’s robbery and triple homicide.

For San Franciscans, it has been a disaster. From the onset of the pandemic to the end of 2020, burglaries rose 62 percent. Murderers surged. And as the calendar turned to 2021, San Francisco saw itself subject to the new style of smash-and-grab looting. Residents knew instantly what was happening across the city. The tech-connected world that San Francisco created allows the city’s residents to easily share the photos and videos from their security systems and smart-home doorbells with each other. Early last month, a campaign to recall Boudin collected enough signatures, and he faces the judgment of voters next June.

Breed has gotten the message and is trying to transform herself into a law-and-order mayor.

In an extraordinary press conference on Tuesday, Breed previewed a far-reaching campaign against crime. She promised to end “the reign of criminals who are destroying our city.” Her tone was refreshing and appropriately belligerent. “What I’m proposing today, and what I will be proposing in the future, will make a lot of people uncomfortable,” she said. “And I don’t care.”

What’s the agenda? Breed plans to refund the police and use them “aggressively.” That includes amending and reforming surveillance laws that she said effectively barred police from responding to crime in real time. She said the city would focus in particular on the Tenderloin neighborhood, where drug-dealing and other crimes are committed regularly, openly, and brazenly. She promised warrant sweeps and an increased police presence with a mandate to interrupt open-air drug abuse and illegal vending. The city will take on the overdue work of cleaning up the neighborhood and lighting it properly at night.

At first glance, this anti-crime agenda looks like the same combination of principles from Sir Robert Peel and modern techniques that saved New York City a generation ago. Breed deliberately sought to send a message through the headlines to San Francisco’s voters, when she said that the city must be “less tolerant of the bullsh** that is destroying our city.”

“Less tolerant” is a revolutionary slogan for Democrats.

“We are a city that prides ourselves on second chances,” Breed said. But “our compassion should not be confused for weakness or indifference.”

In truth, this is Breed resetting and taking a second chance at becoming a competent mayor. If she does reduce crime in the city, the rhetorical and policy stances she took this week will be a model to Democratic mayors everywhere. We wish her well in this turn toward sanity and hope San Franciscans hold her accountable to her promises.

Wet paint, heavy equipment, and exposed wiring still fill the new housing estate at 950 W. El Camino Real in Mountain View. But within a week it will be hosting dozens of people in need of affordable housing.

The latest addition to the city’s limited supply of affordable housing, Luna Vista Apartments are opening their doors as city officials look for ways to build thousands more units like this one. Luna Vista has 70 studio apartments for residents well below the average income in the region, including 15 units specifically reserved for adults with developmental disabilities.

Located on prime lot near downtown Mountain View and a short walk to public transportation, the project is replacing a Taco Bell with high density housing. The density of the 70-unit development corresponds to 117 units per acre – far more than that of most apartments in the city. Although each compact unit is 400 square feet, they are all designed to “live bigger” with fold-out tables and curtain-draped cabinets, said Diane Harvey Dittmar, project manager at Alta Housing.

Glass panels hang at the front of the building, projecting colorful works of art depending on the direction of the sun. Artwork for Luna Vista was created by clients of the Morgan Autism Center.

During development, Luna Vista had a reputation for being extremely expensive to build, costing more than $ 700,000 per unit, and requiring a city grant of more than $ 22 million. Despite the huge need for affordable housing, the $ 49.4 million price tag for the project was enough to cause heartburn to Mountain View City Council members.

Back then, Alta Housing officials cited high land costs as the culprit, but construction costs have skyrocketed since then. Recent projects ahead of the city, including one on Avenida and another on Avenida Montecito, cost a comparable amount per unit.

Although they were cost conscious and careful about keeping the price down, Alta Housing CEO Randy Tsuda said they did not save and strategically use extra money to create a “great” living environment that tenants enjoy regardless of theirs Income serves. Additional amenities such as a communal lobby and balcony on each floor, as well as a spacious roof terrace with views of the bay.

“It proves that you can do this for an affordable project, not just the expensive market-ready projects we see,” said Tsuda.

Rather than creating a box-shaped building that mirrors other housing developments on El Camino, Tsuda said there was a strategic use of warm materials and a large, curved element at the front. The design was inspired by some of the older buildings that previously existed on El Camino, said Tsuda, similar to the streamlined modern style of old drive-ins and gas stations.

Compared to other cities in the Bay Area, Mountain View has built a significant amount of housing in recent years, including hundreds of units for low-income residents and families. But it falls far short of the government-set targets for affordable housing. Between 2015 and 2023, the city was asked to build 1,833 deed-restricted, below-market units, but reports from city officials earlier this year show the city had only granted permits for 448 units – less than a quarter of the target.

The deficit bodes ill for the city’s newest residential destinations. California’s Regional Housing Needs Assessment (RHNA) requires Mountain View to zoning 11,135 new homes, which includes a goal of 6,255 deed-restricted units for low-income households – an order of magnitude more than what has been built in the city in the past. Early strategies for achieving this ambitious goal include finding new sources of funding and working with other agencies to pay for the high cost of housing.

For its part, Alta Housing is expected to be one of the actors helping Mountain View achieve its goal of affordable housing.
