SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KRON) – Tesla CEO Elon Musk posted on Twitter Sunday to warn Austin not to become too “a San Francisco copycat”.

Tesla will move its headquarters from Palo Alto to Austin, Texas.

Elon Musk announces that Tesla is moving its headquarters from California to Austin, Texas

“Austin should be his city, not a copycat of San Francisco,” Musk tweeted in response to a Fox News article about the Austin election.

Proposal A, on the ballot, would include increasing the Austin police force to at least two officers per 1,000, doubling the number of annual training for officers, increasing the recruitment of minorities through regulations, and requiring 35% of the officers shift through the municipal police issued.

If approved, Prop A is expected to cost between $ 271.5 million and $ 598.8 million over the next five years.

To learn more about the Austin special elections, KRON4’s sister broadcaster KXAN has compiled a list of everything that is on the ballot.

Musk previously hinted at what sparked the decision to move Tesla’s headquarters out of the Bay Area in the first place.

He tweeted “Exactly” in response to a Tesla blog post titled “Tesla Relocated Its Headquarters to Texas After Making an Express Offer from the California Congregational Woman.”

What made Elon Musk move the Tesla headquarters to Texas

The blog correlates that Tesla left the state around the time California MP Lorena S. Gonzalez tweeted “F ** k” Elon Musk in May 2020.

“California heavily subsidized a company that has always disregarded the safety and wellbeing of workers, participated in union busting and harassed officials. I probably could have expressed my frustration less aggressively. Of course, nobody would have cared if I had tweeted that, ”wrote Gonzalez on Twitter.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has warned Austin, Texas, of becoming a “San Francisco copycat” while an upcoming city election is set to upgrade the city’s police infrastructure in response to an earlier budget cut.

The city council decided last August to cut $ 150 million, or a third of the city’s police budget. This was the biggest cut of any major city in the US.

“Austin should be his city, not a copycat of San Francisco,” Musk said in a tweet on Sunday.

The tweet comes as local elections are held in the city on Tuesday to vote on “Proposition A,” an ordinance that includes a number of measures to increase the police force and provide them with additional training.

Mr Musk also announced last month that Tesla’s headquarters were moving from Palo Alto, California, to Austin.

“I am pleased to announce that we are moving our headquarters to Austin, Texas,” he said during Tesla’s annual shareholders’ meeting on October 7th.

“It’s hard for people to buy houses, and a lot of people have to come from far away. We’ve taken it as far as we can, but … there’s a limit to how big you can scale it in the Bay Area, “he added.

“Here in Austin, our factory is about five minutes from the airport and 15 minutes from downtown, and we’re going to create an ecological paradise here because we’re right on the Colorado River. It is going to be great.”

Save Austin Now, an organization that claims to be a “non-partisan civic group,” opposed the measure to cut the city’s police budget and supported Proposition A.

On Monday, the group tweeted a response to Mr Musk’s tweet.

The group wants at least two policemen for every thousand inhabitants, which is mentioned in the ordinance.

Proposal A aims to encourage additional training of police officers and provide several incentives to police officers who speak additional languages, among a number of proposed actions.

According to the Austin government’s official website, the ordinance also required police officers to “complete an additional 40 hours of compulsory education and training per year.”

Austin City Council voted to cut $ 150 million, or a third of its police budget, in August last year following the assassination of George Floyd, which sparked massive nationwide protests and calls for the defunding of law enforcement agencies.

Austin city councilor Greg Cesar, who spearheaded the police budget cut, said the vote was a moment to “celebrate what the movement for security, racial justice and democracy has achieved”.

Austin City Council decided to invest that money in other public services.

However, a Fox News report claimed that Austin murders had increased nearly 71 percent since the vote.

Mayor London Breed matched that perspective, saying if you are not ahead of the virus you are falling far behind very quickly.

To contain the spread, San Francisco is joining several other Bay Area jurisdictions to enforce a stay at home order prior to government action.

Contrary to the plan announced by Governor Gavin Newsom on Thursday, the Bay Area regional home stay order will go into effect that Sunday through January 6th.

San Francisco, along with other counties in the Bay Area, will opt for the governor’s regional Stay at Home Order starting Sunday at 10 p.m.

Breed made it clear in her message on Friday that what San Francisco is going through is difficult, but “there is a light at the end of the tunnel”.

Hospital admissions and cases are increasing in San Francisco, and Dr. Colfax said those numbers are likely to get worse in the coming days and weeks.

The city is recording an average of 140 new cases per day, compared to just 34 per day in October.

“We were in a much better place then,” said Breed.

Colfax said the city has about a week to stabilize the number of COVID-19 patients in the city’s hospital system.

“Our biggest fear all along is that we won’t have a bed for you or your mother or your grandmother or grandfather if they get sick,” said Breed. “(It’s) the reality we’ll face if we don’t slow the spread. The actions we’ve tried so far just haven’t turned the curve the way we need them to.”

As part of the Bay Area home stay arrangement, restaurants will be limited to take away and delivery, personal services such as nail salons and hair salons will be closed, and retail store capacity will be limited to 20%.

If the virus continues at the current rate, Dr. Colfax announced that San Francisco hospitals will be short of ICU beds by December 26th.
“If this trend continues and we don’t slow the spread of the virus, we will no longer be able to care for the people in San Francisco’s hospitals, not just because of the beds, but also because we won’t have enough nurses and doctors, to “adequately care for people,” warned Colfax.

According to Colfax, 75% of hospital beds in California are currently occupied.

“There will be no place to relocate patients. There will be no other place to hire more nurses or doctors, which we could otherwise do in a localized health crisis,” warned Colfax.

He emphasized that this is why the city is proceeding so “aggressively”.

“It’s going to be tough this time, but the alternative is unthinkable,” said Colfax.

Fierce Diablo winds are expected to hit Northern California this week, creating an increased risk of fire in the burn-torn region and prompting Pacific Gas & Electric Co. to prepare for potential blackouts in parts of 43 counties, warned utilities.

In part of the Sierra Nevada, which extends to the south of the Santa Cruz Mountains, power outages could occur from Wednesday, according to PG&E.

Two dangerous wind events are expected this week – the first one begins on Wednesday afternoon or evening and extends through Thursday morning and the second develops on Thursday evening and runs through Friday morning, forecasters said.

On Monday morning, the National Weather Service released a fire weather watch for late Tuesday through Friday morning, predicting that the strongest gusts of the first wind event would occur overnight from Wednesday through Thursday. The greatest threat is in the mountains of northeastern counties Napa and Sonoma, where the destructive glass fire is still raging, according to the weather service.

“Any fires that start are likely to spread quickly due to a combination of dry fuel, windy northerly winds, and low humidity,” the forecasters said.

In anticipation of the winds, PG&E announced that the power supply could be cut from Wednesday to Friday for parts of the following counties: Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Humboldt, Lassen, Plumas, Shasta, Siskiyou, Tehama, Trinity, Alpine, Amador, Calaveras El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, Sierra, and Yuba.

Parts of 24 other counties – Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Benito, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Trinity, Yolo, Fresno, Inyo , Kern, Madera, Mariposa, Tulare and Tuolumne – could experience shutdowns for a shorter period of time, utility officials said.

The shutdowns are unlikely to affect entire counties, PG&E said, noting widespread outages in the Bay Area are unlikely.

The agency says the areas most likely to shutdown are the foothills of the northern sierra; the middle and higher peaks of the Sierra, generally north of Yosemite; the northern Bay Area Mountains near Mt. St. Helena; small bags in the East Bay Area near Mt. Diablo; the Oakland Hills east of Piedmont; the elevated terrain east of Milpitas around the Calaveras Reservoir; and parts of the Santa Cruz and Big Sur mountains.

The utility has agreed to pay $ 25.5 billion to settle claims for damages in a previous series of fatal fires stemming from its equipment and for the involuntary manslaughter in Northern California in 2018, the deadliest corporate crime in US history, known to be guilty of 84 involuntary manslaughter.

The company has vowed to revamp its operations and focus more on security to avoid starting another catastrophic fire. But it is now being examined for its possible involvement in the deadly Zogg Fire. California investigators consider the company’s equipment to be a possible cause of the fire that killed four people and burned more than 56,000 acres in the Sierra Nevada.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection included some of the utility’s equipment in its investigation, PG&E said in a report to the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The utility filed a preliminary report of the incident with state regulators, stating in a statement that it was working with investigators. Cal Fire has not yet determined the cause of the fire.

Temperatures across the state are expected to rise throughout the week, with parts of the Central Valley nearing record highs, according to the National Weather Service. Dry winds are expected to sweep the Sacramento Valley at speeds of up to 30 mph as of Monday.

“A warming and drying trend will happen this week as high pressure builds up across the state,” PG&E officials said in a statement in which gusts in the mountains of the North Bay Area and Northern Sierra are at or over 50 miles / h were estimated.

Northern California was burned by historic forest fires that year, with 4 million acres burned. The August Complex, the largest fire in the state’s history, is still burning in the Mendocino National Forest on Monday morning, according to Cal Fire.

Parts of the region are already exposed to an increased fire risk with above-average temperatures and windy conditions. Air quality warnings remain in effect throughout the San Joaquin Valley and central California due to forest fires, according to the National Weather Service Forecasting Center in Hanford.

National Weather Service meteorologist David King said the winds built up in the northeast and blew offshore, leaving warm temperatures and dried fuel. The winds are expected to be strongest at high elevations in the North Bay Mountains, East Bay Hills, and Santa Cruz Mountains, King said.

“We’ll still see winds making it into the valleys, but it won’t be very strong or excessive,” he said. “If you have strong winds, you are very concerned about the tall fire. That will really stay in the higher elevations now. “

Temperatures in the Los Angeles area are expected to hit sultry highs again this week, with areas in the San Fernando Valley approaching 100 degrees. The beaches will float in the 80s, said weather service meteorologist Mike Wofford. A heat warning for a large part of the region is expected to come into force on Tuesday at 11 a.m. and, according to the weather service, will continue until Friday 5 p.m.

“It’ll just be hot and dry, not our usual morning low clouds and fog,” said Wofford.
