Ross held the Giants to two walks and three hits in the scoreless appearance and threw 99 pitches, including 59 strikes, which ultimately led to a 4-1 victory that gave the Nationals a sweep of the three-game set in the City blessed bay.

WASHINGTON — America’s politicians aren’t winning many popularity contests lately, and a survey doesn’t like the job they’re doing running our cities either! In a study of how efficiently the country’s biggest metropolitan areas are operating, the nation’s biggest and most famous cities finish at the bottom of the list.

According to a recent WalletHub study, Washington, DC ranks as the worst-run big city in the entire country. The nation’s capital finished dead last in the analysis of 150 big cities — measuring the quality of their city services and the total budget they have available per resident.

San Francisco, California and New York City ranked as the second and third-worst, respectively. All three finished at the bottom of the list in terms of total budget per capita, while also tying for the largest amount of long-term outstanding debt per capita.

Failing from coast to coast

In Washington, high school graduation rates are now the fourth-lowest in the country, finishing only ahead of Columbia, South Carolina, Toledo, Ohio, and Richmond, Virginia. Meanwhile, in a city that’s home to America’s most important elected officials, Washington only ranks 73rd in terms of safety. Its local economy is doing even worse, ranking 131st.

In San Fran, the city can actually brag about having the second-lowest infant mortality rate in the nation. Unfortunately, it’s also home to the worst-quality roads of any of the 150 cities in the study. In fact, the six cities with the worst roads are all in California, including Fremont, Oakland, San Jose, Santa Ana, and Huntington Beach!

As for New York, the Big Apple may be home to Wall Street, but the local economy looks more like “the big toilet.” According to the study, New York City’s financial stability ranks 103rd and its overall economy is 135th. Although recent reports continue to document the city’s rising crime rate, New York still managed to finish 12th in terms of city safety.

On the other hand, violent crime is at its worst in Memphis, Tennessee, followed by Detroit, St. Louis, Birmingham, and Baltimore.

Rounding out the 10 worst-run cities in 2022 are Chattanooga, Tennessee (147th), Cleveland, Ohio (146th), Detroit, Michigan (145th), Flint, Michigan (144th), Oakland, California (143rd), Hartford, Connecticut ( 142nd), and Gulfport, Mississippi (141st).

Money matters

When it comes to choosing where to live, one of the biggest questions Americans have to ask themselves is “can I afford to live here?”

The study found that two Michigan cities top the list for having the highest unemployment rate (Flint and Detroit). Cleveland, Gary, Indiana, and Bridgeport, Connecticut round out the “top five” worst job markets.

Unfortunately, if you do find a job in these cities, it likely won’t pay very well. Gary, Detroit, Hartford, and Cleveland all finished among the cities with the lowest median annual household incomes, after adjusting for the local cost of living.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Chesapeake, Virginia boasts the best annual incomes in the nation, along with Fremont, California and Virginia Beach, Virginia. These three cities also land on the list of cities with the lowest poverty rates in the United States.

WASHINGTON (RNS) — Two days after Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco announced he would bar her from receiving the Eucharist in her home city due to her stance on abortion rights, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reportedly received the sacrament at a Catholic church in the nation’s capital.

According to Politico’s Playbook, Pelosi received Communion on Sunday (May 22) during Mass at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Georgetown, a parish where President Joe Biden has also attended services. Footage from the church’s live stream of the service shows a person in an orange jacket resembling Pelosi coming forward as the Eucharist is being distributed and walking away behind other worshipers.

It’s not unusual for Pelosi, a Catholic who often discusses her faith, to attend Mass, but her decision to receive the Eucharist at Holy Trinity amounted to a rebuke of Cordileone, who is well known for his conservative and sometimes controversial views.

According to the Rev. John Beal, a canon lawyer and professor at the Catholic University of America, Cordileone’s ban is not believed to affect Pelosi’s ability to take Communion outside of churches under the archbishop’s purview.

“It applies only to ministers, ordained and non-ordained, in the Archdiocese of San Francisco,” Beal told Religion News Service in an email, noting that it applies to diocesan leaders as well as those who belong to a religious order. “It does not apply outside the Archdiocese.”

Several conservative bishops voiced support for Cordileone’s decision after his Friday announcement, but Cardinal Wilton Gregory, the leader of the Archdiocese of Washington, is one of several who have signaled that they don’t have any plans to deny Communion to politicians dissenting from church teaching . In 2020, when bishops and other Catholics began debating whether to deny Communion to Biden, a Democrat who backs abortion rights, Gregory told RNS he would continue to offer the president the sacrament.

“I don’t want to go to the table with a gun on the table first,” he said.

Asked if the policy remains in place for Pelosi as well, representatives for the Washington archdiocese did not immediately respond.

Francis has not backed away from the church’s longstanding opposition to abortion. On Sunday, the pope celebrated a group participating in an Italian anti-abortion demonstration and stated that life “is always sacred and inviolable, and we cannot silence the voice of conscience.”

The Rev. Benjamin Hawley, a priest at Holy Trinity, mentioned the back-and-forth over abortion and communion in his Sunday homily, wrapping his sermon around a theme of God’s love. Hawley singled out three things he described as “weapons of mass destruction” that are “destroying our civic and church cultures” — exclusion, repression and scorn.

“Inhabitants of these latter cultures think they can solve the challenges of immigration at home, radical Islam abroad, abortion, Latin Mass, communion for political figures, coastal elites, and many others by excluding, repressing and scorning one group to leave their own group standing — perhaps as a white evangelical nation, a smaller, purer church, or coastal elites become national,” he said.

Sanchez vs San Francisco:

Aaron Sanchez had surgery to repair a torn capsule in his right shoulder, which kept him from pitching in the majors in 2020’s 60-game COVID campaign, and the right-handed starter had a biceps issue which limited him to just nine games (seven starts ) and 35 1⁄3 IP with the San Francisco Giants in 2021, after he signed a 1-year/$4M deal with the club.

This time around, Sanchez, 29, got a 1-year/$2M contract from Washington (which includes up to $4M in performance bonuses), and he started the season at Triple-A Rochester in the Nationals’ system, but came back up to the majors to start against the Giants last weekend in the nation’s capital, giving up six hits, a walk, and four earned runs in 4 1⁄3 IP.

“I just stayed on the attack all day, really,” he said after his 2022 debut. “That’s my game. Try to get guys on their heels, and then when they start swinging, then you mix it up, just didn’t fall my way today.”

“He’s a ground ball guy, and he throws a lot of ground balls. When he’s good, that’s what he does. So I was definitely pleased by that, they found some holes, but he threw the ball well,” manager Davey Martinez said following a 5-2 loss to the Giants in DC

Tonight at San Francisco’s Oracle Park, Sanchez took the mound with a 1-0 lead, courtesy of Juan Soto, who homered in the top of the first inning, and the starter worked around a 2-out single in a scoreless first, but gave up a two-out single and two-run home run, by Giants’ CF Austin Slater and third baseman Jason Vosler, respectively, in a 16-pitch home-half of the second inning.

Slater singled to start the Giants’ fifth, took third on a one-out single by Joey Bart, and came in on a sac fly by Luis González, which made it a 5-3 game after five innings, with Sanchez up to 71 pitches after the 13 pitch bottom of the inning.

With the Nationals up 9-3 after five and a half, and a long top of the fifth inning, the visiting team went to the pen…

Wood vs Washington:

In his third start of the season for the Giants, with whom he signed a 2-year/$24M deal this past November, after signing on with San Francisco on a 1-year/$3M in 2021, Alex Wood, 31, gave up four hits, a walk, and two earned runs over five innings, in which he struck out five Washington Nationals’ batters in a 77-pitch effort in a 5-2 win for the lefty and his club.

The outing left the lefty with a 2.51 ERA, a 3.69 FIP, four walks, 16 Ks, and .241/.305/.389 line against in 14 1⁄3 IP.

Wood’s ERA was up to 3.07 after he gave up a one-out solo shot to center by Juan Soto, who crushed an 0-2 sinker and hit a 409-foot home run off the Giants’ lefty, his 4th of 2022, 1- 0

Maikel Franco lined a double to left field to lead off the second, and scored two outs later on an RBI line drive to left-center by Victor Robles, who came around on an opposite field single by Alcides Escobar for a 3-0 lead after one and a half.

It was 3-2 in the third when Nelson Cruz walked with one down, took third on a misplay in right on a Josh Bell single, and scored on another double by Franco, 4-2, and then 5-2 on Lane Thomas’s two -out infield single.

Soto Solo:

Juan Soto finished the Nationals’ 10-game homestand 6 for 32 (.188/.366/.281), taking the 23-year-old Nationals’ outfielder from a .289/.460/.553 line on April 17th to . 243/.418/.429, and he hadn’t hit a home run in 48 plate appearances going back to the 16th of April.

The three home runs he’d hit on the season were all solo shots too, for his only 3 RBIs in 21 games this month.

His fourth was a one-out solo shot in the top of the first tonight, 108 miles off the bat, out to center in Oracle Park, 409 feet from home. Wood wants that one back. Soto picked up his first RBI on a non-solo home run later in the game…

Bullpen Action:

Giants’ righty Yunior Marte took over on the mound in the top of the sixth, and gave up a hit by Victor Robles (2 for 3), then hit Alcides Escobar, setting César Hernández up with an RBI opportunity he cashed in with a line drive to right field on a first-pitch slider, 6-3.

Jarlín García came on to face Juan Soto, lefty vs lefty, with two on and one out, and Soto lined a 1-1 changeup off the top of the brick wall in right in the Giants’ home for an RBI hit, and a 7 -3 lead. Hernández scored in the next at-bat on a throwing error on a double play attempt on a Nelson Cruz grounder to first, 8-3, and 9-3 when Cruz took second on the E, and scored on a Josh Bell grounder by third .

Austin Voth gave up back-to-back singles to Wilmer Flores and Brandon Crawford after he took over on the mound in the bottom of the sixth, but struck out the next two batters (with a wild pitch moving both runners in scoring position).

Steve Cishek took over with two out, and runners on second and third, and the side-arming right-hander popped Austin Slater up to end the threat. Quiet 9-3.

Sam Clay gave up a solo home run to left by Joey Bart in the bottom of the seventh, 9-4.

Giants’ righty Kervin Castro walked Juan Soto to start the eighth, and Soto took third on a ground-rule double by Josh Bell, then scored on an RBI single to center by Maikel Franco, 10-4. Lane Thomas drove in a run with a single as well, 11-4, and two runs scored on Victor Robles’s fourth hit of the night, (after he had 7 in 52 PAs before today), 13-4, and 14-4 on an Alcides Escobar single.

Francisco Perez gave up a leadoff single and back-to-back, 2-out walks in the eighth inning, and was replaced by Paolo Espino, who got out No. 3 to leave the bases loaded.

Josh Bell and Maikel Franco were both 4 for 6 after singing in back-to-back, 1-out at-bats in the ninth.

Lane Thomas led off on Saturday, after he’d hit mostly 6th or 7th in the Nationals’ lineup over the first few weeks of the 2022 campaign, and Washington skipper Davey Martinez moved César Hernández, who’d led off in each of the 16 games he’d played in early this season, to sixth.

“I just wanted to see if we could jumpstart Lane a little bit,” Martinez said when asked about the moves after the club’s 5-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants. “[Thomas] did well for us in the leadoff spot [in 2021]and also too when I talked to Cesar last night [we talked] about letting him relax a little bit and not trying to put so much pressure on him trying to get on base, and just swing the bat. And he did well today, they both did well, so we’ll see what happens tomorrow. I know we got a right-handed pitcher against us, I’m going to look at everything tonight, and then make a decision how we’re going to do that tomorrow.”

Hernández’s 2 for 4 game left him 17 for 73 (.233/.263/.274) so ​​fat this season. Thomas went 1 for 4 with an RBI in the loss, leaving him 9 for 46 (.196/.255/.261) on the year.

These guys are going to hit,” Martinez said. “These guys have hit their whole career, they’re going to hit, just don’t try to do too much, stay in the zone, and take your walks. I preach all the time, ‘Hey, take your walks, get on base for the next guy. Don’t chase.’ So, but I got all the confidence in the world that those guys will hit. If we continue to do what we’re doing in the bottom part of our lineup, we’re getting on base, I like that, so it’s just a matter of time before the whole lineup starts clicking, and we start scoring runs again. ”

As for Bell’s injury?

“He’s got right hamstring tightness, so we took him out,” the manager explained.

“He went to get an MRI and we’re waiting for him to get back with the results. I wanted to be cautious. With the other leg, with his knee.”

Mike Rizzo told 106.7 the FAN in DC’s Grant Paulsen back in April 2015 he was not a fan of the designated hitter, and he said then he preferred the National League style of baseball which is a now a thing of the past, since the universal DH was adopted as part of the new CBA this season.

“I hate the DH,” Rizzo said flatly back in ’15. “I always hated the DH. I’d hate to see the DH in the National League.”

Now that it’s here, however?

“It’s here,” Rizzo told 106.7 the FAN in DC’s Sports Junkies this past Wednesday.

“So deal with it. live with it We got a good one and we’re happy that we have [Nelson] Cruz as our primary DH, and if we didn’t have him I might have a little different opinion of it.”

Cruz was available to sign when he did in mid-March, at least in part because he waited for a decision on the universal DH in the CBA, so he could have a clear picture of his options if the NL adopted the designated hitter.

“I got a few offers before the lockout,” the 41-year-old, 18-year veteran explained in Spring Training. “But definitely I wanted to explore what was going on after the lockout, from the [standpoint] of the universal DH.”

Manager Davey Martinez has also previously stated his preference for the old NL style of ball, but he too told reporters this week he’s learning to live with it.

“For me, it doesn’t seem all that bad, because we have Nelson Cruz DH-ing for us,” Martinez said. “Which is pretty nice. But, yeah, the game is different because there’s a lot of moving parts when you play National League style, and there’s a lot of different things that you have to do.”

“It has definitely been getting used to,” the fifth-year manager acknowledged, “even though we’ve done it, because we’ve played having to go to the other leagues, and have a DH, but to do it every day, it’s definitely different.”

Cruz was 10 for 51 (.196/.281/.255) with a home run, six walks, and 11 Ks in 13 games and 58 plate appearances going into Wednesday afternoon’s series finale with the Arizona D-backs, but he connected for a two-run home run to the left after Juan Soto walked in front of him.

Cruz’s manager said he saw positive signs from the Nationals’ DH at the plate.

“The one thing I noticed today is he was getting ready really early, he was getting his foot down on time, so I mean for me it’s just a matter of time. This guy is going to hit, we know that, but once he starts doing that he’ll start driving the balls, and you’ll start seeing a lot more balls leaving the park. I mean, when he gets hot it’s a sight to see, so hopefully he’s getting there and getting there soon.”

Cruz went 0 for 3 with a walk in last night’s loss. What will he do today?

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF/AP) — Schoolchildren in California, Oregon and Washington will no longer be required to wear masks as part of new indoor mask policies the Democratic governors of all three states announced jointly on Monday.

“With declining case rates and hospitalizations across the West, California, Oregon and Washington are moving together to update their masking guidance,” the governors said in a statement.

The new guidance will make face coverings a recommendation rather than a requirement at most indoor places in California starting Tuesday and at schools on March 12, regardless of vaccination status. In Washington and Oregon, all the requirements will lift on March 12.

Federal mask requirements will still apply in high-risk indoor settings such as public transportation, airports and taxis. Rules for other high-risk indoor settings could also vary by state.

The milestone, two years in the making, comes as much of the country relaxes public health orders, including school mask mandates, in an effort to restore normalcy and boost economic recovery as Americans learn to live with the virus.

“California continues to adjust our policies based on the latest data and science, applying what we’ve learned over the past two years to guide our response to the pandemic,” said California Gov. Gavin Newsom in a statement. “Masks are an effective tool to minimize spread of the virus and future variants, especially when transmission rates are high. We cannot predict the future of the virus, but we are better prepared for it and will continue to take measures rooted in science to keep California moving forward.”

“Two years ago today, we identified Oregon’s first case of COVID-19,” Oregon Gov. Kate Brown said in the statement. “On the West Coast our communities and economies are linked. Together, as we continue to recover from the Omicron surge, we will build resiliency and prepare for the next variant and the next pandemic.”

Earlier this month, California became the first state to formally shift to an endemic approach to the coronavirus with Newsom’s announcement of a plan that emphasizes prevention and quick reaction to outbreaks over mandated masking and business shutdowns.

Newsom has come under growing pressure from Republicans and other critics to ease the school mandate, which has increasingly become a polarizing issue among parents in California.

While many parents still support wearing masks in schools, others have questioned why it’s necessary when they no longer are required to do so in supermarkets and elsewhere. On Feb. 15 California ended an indoor mask requirement for vaccinated people, but at that time left the rule in place for the unvaccinated and for schoolchildren.

Jeff Freitas, president of the California Federation of Teachers (CFT), released a response noting that the union, which represents 120,000 educational employees, supported changes based on science, and that’s why they’re glad there’s a two-week transition.

“The two week time period for transitioning to the new policy will give local school districts and local public health agencies time to review local conditions and, in consultation with parents and educators, make the decision about when and where masking is appropriate in their schools, Freitas wrote. “Any decision on masking at the local level should be made with an equity lens so that the health and safety of our hardest hit communities, and especially our most vulnerable students, are prioritized. Districts must continue to provide high quality masks and ensure a safe environment for all staff and students who want or need to continue to wear them. Schools must also continue to have robust testing and proper ventilation in place before making masks optional.

The CFT’s statement also called on Newsom and the state legislature to increase funding for vaccination campaigns.

“COVID vaccinations have proven to work, and will be critical to ensure the long term safety of our schools and communities. We urge the state of California and local school districts to double down on their vaccination campaigns for students and their families. This is especially critical for our low-income communities of color, who have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic,” the statement said. “We will continue to work with local education agencies to strengthen proven mitigation efforts, including vaccination access, making high quality masks available to staff and students, sufficient testing, and ventilation upgrades.

Starting Tuesday in California, masks will no longer be required but “strongly recommended” for unvaccinated individuals in most indoor settings. The same shift will apply to K-12 schools and childcare facilities starting March 12, the statement said.

A handful of California school districts have already dropped mask mandates for students in recent weeks in open defiance of the state mandate.

The West Coast announcements come after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention eased the federal mask guidance Friday, essentially saying the majority of Americans don’t need to wear masks in many indoor public places, including schools.

The new CDC guidance bases recommendations for restrictions such as masking on a new set of measures, with less focus on positive test results and more on what’s happening at hospitals. Under the new system, the CDC said that more than 70% of Americans live in places where the coronavirus poses a low or medium threat to hospitals and therefore can stop wearing masks in most indoor places.

The CDC had endorsed universal masking in schools regardless of virus levels in the community since July, but it now recommends masks in schools only in counties at high risk.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said health officials will announce new guidance for schools next week to give them time to prepare.

“Many businesses and families will continue choosing to wear masks,” he said. “As we transition to this next phase, we will continue to move forward together carefully and cautiously.”

Despite rising criticism from parents and some school administrators, Newsom had left the school mask requirements in place in California.

On Sunday, children and parents of “Mask Choice” rallied at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, holding signs demanding the end of mask requirements in schools.

“It’s seen as this force field. It’s been given too much credit. It’s time to get our kids back to normal,” said Laura Fagan.

“The California DPH has been the most conservative, the most restrictive of all the state departments of public health in the United States,” said UCSF infectious diseases expert Dr. Monica Ghandi.

“I think we’re all in pretty much agreement that it’s appropriate to take masks off for a lot of people. It’s really a question of is it now or will it be in a couple weeks?” said UC Berkeley infectious diseases expert Dr. John Schwartzberg.

Under new CDC recommendations, the majority of school districts in California’s 58 counties would be allowed to remove masks falling under “low or medium” levels of transmission.

Nearly every Bay Area county meets the criteria too, with the exception of Napa and Solano counties, which are still in the red.

“We are doing so much better than five and six weeks ago. The surge has come down dramatically,” Swartzberg said.

In the latest UC Berkeley/IGS poll, 61 percent still support mask mandates in schools. Thirty-seven percent disapprove, with the remaining undecided.

“Of course, we’d like to have the masks off with kids but it’s not dangerous, having them on,” Swartzberg said.

After the Raiders lost 17-15 to Washington on Sunday for their fourth loss in five games to deal a big blow to their dwindling playoff hopes, Carr was far less optimistic.

Another game plagued by slow starts on offense and the inability to finish drives with touchdowns called the Raiders (6-6).

4.3. Carr’s average finish only moved 4.3 yards down as he settled for check-downs multiple times, especially early in the game. The Raiders had a lot more success this season when Carr pushed the ball across the field, with the average finish on wins being 7.7 yards down and just 4.9 on losses.
