SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – San Jose police announced Thursday that a wheelchair user who was hit by a car a year ago was counted as a road death that year.

The victim, who the San Jose police did not immediately identify but will be named by the Santa Clara County Coroner Office, died on July 23. An autopsy revealed that the victim died from injuries sustained in a car accident on September 22, 2020.

“On September 22nd, 2021, our traffic investigation department received a notification from the coroner that the victim’s cause of death was mainly due to the injuries sustained in the collision. Although that collision occurred in 2020, the victim was declared deceased that year. That fatality will be added to this year’s totals, “a statement from the San Jose Police Department said.

The death of the victim is now considered the 45th fatal collision and the 46th victim of the year 2021. It is also the 19th pedestrian death of the year.

The incident in which the victim was hospitalized happened on the morning of September 22, 2020 near the intersection of Parkmoor and Meridian Avenues.

“It was found that the pedestrian was entering the zebra crossing while the walking signal was being displayed. For reasons unknown, the wheelchair moved slowly, ”the police report said. “The traffic lights for vehicular traffic going north on Meridian Avenue changed from red to green while the wheelchair was still on the zebra crossing. A Toyota Prius was heading north on Meridian Avenue when it hit the pedestrian in a wheelchair. “

First responders took the victim to a nearby hospital, where he stayed until he died of his serious injuries. The driver, whom the police did not identify, cooperated with the investigation, according to the police.
