SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Stay safe! Strong gusty winds will continue through the morning in the Bay Area

A Wind Advisory is in effect for Thursday until 10 am for the Diablo Range, East Bay Hills and North Bay Mountains along with a wind advisory until 4 pm for Solano County.

Prepare early to prevent possible damage from dangerous winds gusting 40 to 55 mph.

WATCH LIVE: Track wind speeds in real-time around SF Bay Area

Make sure to secure all outdoor items, avoid parking under trees and charge batteries in case you lose power overnight.

High profile vehicles driving across east/west bridges like the Richmond San Rafael Bridge, the Bay Bridge, San Mateo Bridge and Dumbarton Bridge will deal with gusty crosswinds.

The excessive speed and exceptionally dry air elevate our fire danger.

We would be under fire weather watches, but the vegetation in the Bay Area is not too dry and the temperature is mild.
If you’re on the ABC7 News app, click here to watch live

The strong winds that blew through the Bay Area on Jan. 21 and 22, causing property damage and power outages throughout the region, look to be returning this week.

The National Weather Service issued an advisory Monday morning that northerly gusts from the offshore wind event coming Tuesday and Wednesday will effect most of the Bay Area, and winds could reach over 70 mph in the North Bay mountains.

“Models are suggesting that this event may be similar to our recent event on January 21-22,” the NWS said in a news release.

That wind event saw gusts over 60 mph on Mount Hamilton and Mount Diablo, and a staggering 96 mph in the Healdsburg Hills. In the East Bay, the storm downed trees and power lines and knocked out power for many.

A high wind watch has been issued across the majority of the San Francisco Bay Area and Santa Cruz mountains (excluding the Santa Clara valley) for gusty northerly winds. These gusty winds arrive between tonight and Thursday morning and fcst strongest in the N Bay mtns. #cawx pic.twitter.com/tCL7EpuxsD

“At this point, it looks as though Tuesday and Wednesday will be the strongest days with a focus on the interior mountains of the North Bay,” the NWS said in the advisory.

The alert effects the entire Bay Area and Santa Cruz mountains with the exception of the Santa Clara Valley.

“Good idea to secure outdoor objects, don’t park under trees & prepare for power outages,” ABC7 meteorologist Drew Tuma said in a tweet Monday morning, sharing the warning.

The NWS says the wind event is likely to occur from late tonight until early Thursday (Feb. 3) and will potentially down trees, knock out power and create hazardous driving conditions.

Powerful offshore winds knocked mountaintops across the San Francisco Bay Area Tuesday morning and blustery conditions are expected to reach lower elevations through the day, increasing the risk for wildfire starts.

The National Weather Service is forecasting sustained northerly winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts of 45 to 60 mph in the East Bay, North Bay and San Francisco. Gusts over 70 mph area are possible at elevations above 2,500 feet.

The weather service issued a wind advisory for some locations warning of damaging winds that could blow over trees and knock out power. The weather service advised people to secure loose outdoor objects and structures. High profile vehicles and those pulling trailers may have difficulty driving in the blustery conditions, especially across bridges that tend to be more exposed.

The offshore flow is pushing dry air into the region and humidity levels are expected to drop into the 10% to 25% range. This combined with limited rainfall in January that has caused vegetation to dry out will increase the fire risk.

“While this isn’t late summer or fall, extreme care should be taken outside with open flames or sparks,” the weather service said. “Fire starts are possible due to the combination of drying fuels, gusty winds, and low humidity.”

In an offshore wind event last month, a fire ignited in the mountains of Big Sur and the Colorado Fire has since burned over 700 acres. The blaze that started on Jan. 21 was 98% contained as of Tuesday, Cal Fire said.

Weather service forecaster Ryan Walbrun said the setup for this offshore wind pattern is similar to the Jan. 21 to 22 event when cold air dropped down into Nevada and the Great Basin, kicking up winds from Nevada toward the coast.

“It’s a little bit unusual to have this type of a pattern in February,” said Ryan Walbrun, a meteorologist with the weather service. “I would say it’s more common for fall and early winter. It would be much more normal to see this in October or November.”

The weather service issued a wind advisory for the East Bay hills Tuesday morning and it continues until 9 am Thursday.

An advisory goes in effect at 9 pm tonight for San Francisco, coastal North Bay, including Point Reyes National Seashore, East Bay interior valleys, and northern Monterey Bay. It expires at 9 pm Wednesday.

Meteorologists across Northern California are closely monitoring a strong weather system that is expected to create ideal conditions for gusty north winds and extremely low humidity from Sunday through Tuesday, creating a significant risk of wildfires, the National Weather Service reported.

The system, known as the “Inside Slider”, will fall from the Pacific Northwest and dig its way over the Great Basin late Sunday evening through Monday, and offshore winds in the region with scattered gusts of over 60 mph and even up to 70 mph drive. the highest peaks in the San Francisco Bay Area, including Mount St. Helena in the North Bay and Mount Diablo in the East Bay.

“In contrast to systems that come from the sea, this system will come from within,” said weather service forecaster Geri Diaz. “This air is drier and comes from further north, traveling over land rather than water. It’s a classic setup for this time of year.”

Weather service forecaster Cindy Palmer added that this will be the strongest offshore wind event the San Francisco Bay Area has seen since the beginning of the year, although the winds don’t look quite as extreme as during some of the most recent devastating fires in the United States North Bay, including the 2017 Sonoma and Napa Counties Fires, the Kincade Fire 2019, and the Glass Fire 2020.

Still, Palmer added, “This is a respectable wind event. It’s nothing special. We look for frequent guests with a speed of 40 to 80 miles per hour, locally we could see gusts of 60 miles per hour. It wouldn’t surprise me if Mount Diablo and Mount St. Helena pressed 70 miles an hour. “

Offshore winds, also known as Diablo winds, are common across California in October. These winds blow hot air from inland towards the coast and are known to dry out the landscape and remove moisture from the vegetation, making it highly flammable. This year the risk of fire is particularly dry, as the vegetation has dried up after two consecutive dry winters.

The National Weather Service has upgraded the fire station to a stricter red flag warning for the North Bay Mountains and East Bay Hills and Valleys from 11 p.m. Sunday through 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The strongest winds are expected in the eastern areas of the Napa, Contra Costa and Alameda counties, the weather service said.

With drying winds, the humidity could drop in the tens during the day in the interior of the country.

“Any outbreak of fire would likely spread quickly due to dry fuel, low humidity and gusty winds,” warned the weather service. “Burning outdoors is not recommended.”

PG&E told 44,000 customers that they could turn off their electricity on Monday due to the strong winds and the increased risk of fire in the forecast.

Up to 32 counties could be affected, including Alameda, Contra Costa, Napa, Solano and Sonoma counties in the SF Bay Area.

KYBURZ (CBS SF) – Gusty winds from the canyon lashed the Caldor fire along Highway 50 as firefighters lit flames near the mountainous community of Kyburz early Thursday in an attempt to keep the fire from advancing toward densely populated Lake Tahoe. Pelvis to slow down.

The winds and burning scaly wood and brush threw up clouds of embers well in front of the main fire and lit point fires beyond the containment lines. One of those larger point fires broke out along Wrights Lake Road north of the freeway and had grown to over 700 acres by Wednesday evening.

CONTINUE READING: UPDATE: 12-year-old killed, woman seriously injured after car tried to hit train at Oakley Crossing

“The wind was blowing from the southwest all day, challenging our lines,” said Eric Schwab, director of operations at Cal Fire, during a community update on Wednesday evening. “Unfortunately, one point fire threw another point fire over Wright Lakes Road. We are currently trying to contain it. It’s about 700 acres … We’re chasing this one. It moves sideways. “

Point fires were a challenge.

“Ninety out of 100 embers that go out and end up in the fuel will create an ignition that will cause us to mitigate this,” said Steve Volmer, the chief fire behavior analyst working on the fire.

The fire burns in an area that was not lit by a major fire or flames before the 1940s.

“We’re looking at very dense wood, trees that are very large in diameter – 40 inches in diameter,” said Volmer. “Heavy dead and run down fuels. That causes us some control problems. These dead and knocked down materials are very receptive. They are extremely dry … A very absorbent burning bed. ”

The most intense firefight was fought on the eastern edge of the fire. To the west, the crews used backfiring to gain better control of the fire and stop it from spreading along the northern and central bifurcation of the Cosumnes River.

By Thursday morning, the fire had grown to 136,643 acres with a 12 percent containment. It devastated the mountain community of Grizzly Flats and destroyed at least 465 homes in the fire zone.

Almost 3,000 firefighters were involved in the firefight, aided by a steady stream of helicopters and air tankers dumping flame retardants and water.

According to meteorologist Jim Dudley, firefighters will also be assisted by a change in wind conditions over the next three days. The gusty southwest winds in the afternoon will calm down.

“This southerly wind current, which was fed into the fire area and helps to drive the south to south-westerly winds in the afternoon, will cease,” he said. “We will have very light winds at high altitudes. On the ridge tops and the very critical east side of the fire, we will not have the supportive effect of the south-westerly winds. “

The wind shift will help thin the layer of smoke over Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe City on the west bank had the worst air pollution in the country on Wednesday lunchtime, scoring 334 in the “dangerous” category on the Air Quality Index 0-500, according to AirNow, a partnership between federal, state and local airline agencies.

Just south of Tahoe, Rick Nelson and his wife Diane had planned to hold a weekend wedding at Fallen Leaf Lake, where his daughter and her fiancé had met. However, the smoke caused most of the community to leave. The sun was an eerie blood orange and the swimmers and boats in the lake were obscured by mist on Tuesday.

CONTINUE READING: Foster City Council dismisses the city manager and hands the role to the chief of police

In the end, the Nelsons spent two days arranging the relocation of the wedding from Glacier Lake several hours southwest to the San Francisco Bay Area.

“Everyone is trying to escape the smoke. And I think it’s going to be a reality for us, unfortunately, ”said Diane Nelson. “I just think the smoke and fires got bigger, hotter and faster.”

While thousands of residents were forced to flee, a suspected looter was arrested on Wednesday while on patrol in the evacuation area.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office said a suspicious man was found on the surveillance camera of a Pollock Pines resident.

“We received a call from a citizen who was actually watching one of their surveillance cameras,” said Sgt. Eric Palmberg of the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.

MPs soon met in the field and stopped the man. He was found with items that MPs believed had been stolen.

This man, identified as 51-year-old Brandon Massey, has since been arrested and is now charged, among other things, with looting during the State of Emergency and possession of a controlled substance.
