Chef Dontaye Ball, better known As Mr. Gumbo, I couldn't say exactly how old he was when he first tried gumbo at his grandmother's house in the Fillmore District. His grandmother always said she was eight years old. His mother thinks there were more like four. But either way, gumbo tastes like Christmas to him. Ball remembers the whole family elbowing their way into the kitchen and arguing about exactly what was going into the pot.

For a long time, good gumbo was hard to find in San Francisco. But thankfully, as we struggle through this wet winter, San Francisco appears to be nearing peak gumbo. Brenda always prepared a serious bowl full of chicken, andouille, and okra. Boug Cali will be coming to the Ferry Building this year bringing jars of seafood gumbo to take home. Meanwhile, Gumbo Social opened last summer in Bayview, where Ball delves deep into the iconic dish.

Many people know gumbo as the official state dish of Louisiana, although there are variations of it throughout the South. Ball's grandmother grew up on a farm in Mississippi and cooked for a family in San Francisco for 20 years, making her a gumbo expert and a “fantastic cook,” according to Ball. Ball was born and raised in Bayview. He attended culinary school at City College, trained in France, cooked at Delfina and worked in the restaurant industry. At Gumbo Social, he doesn't try to recreate anyone's grandmother's stew. For him, gumbo feels more personal. “I'm a firm believer that each bowl should taste a little different than the last depending on how the person is feeling,” says Ball. “The emotions of what they're going through in life comes through in this pot of gumbo. “

According to him, the key ingredients for gumbo include a roux made from fat and flour; the “holy trinity” of onion, celery and pepper; and “the Pope” or garlic. Some purists say the pepper has to be green, but the California chef loves colorful reds and yellows. Despite some haters, he insists on okra. Okra is originally from West Africa, where it is called “Ki Ngombo” or simply “Gombo”. So it is the name of the ingredient and part of the history of the dish. To get the most out of it, he thinly slices the okra, salts it, and roasts it, which he says is crucial to the stew's earthy flavor and viscous texture.

“I'm not the gumbo porter,” he jokes, “but I like to talk shit.” There are a few controversial ingredients he can't stand, particularly tomatoes and corn. “Corn is one of those things. It's actually against the law. That can get you ten years in prison.”

The most important technique is to be patient with the roux. His grandmother relied on her cast iron skillet and always used oil. (One time an uncle washed it in water and hit him with it.) His Texas grandfather preferred aromatic lard or bacon grease. Ball uses a combination of oil and butter to add a hint of toasted flavor to the browned butter. He lets it gurgle in large vats in the restaurant for two and a half hours until it is darker than mahogany. His broths, which are enriched with chicken carcasses, ham bones or shrimp shells and simmer for up to 24 hours, also sink for many hours. Additionally, he smokes his own turkeys, another 8-hour project.

Building on this foundation of deep flavor, Ball makes several versions, including classic chicken and sausage, smoked turkey, and black-eyed peas (gumbo can't be gluten-free because of the roux, but it can apparently be vegan). From there, he gets a little West Coast flavor with the toppings, like crispy duck like carnitas, smoked pork belly and fried chicken wings. His uncles always argued about who gets more shrimp or crab, so he offers blue crab most of the year and promises Dungeness during the season (he's between crab guys at the moment, so stay tuned). On unusual occasions he has even prepared a butter-poached lobster, presented in the shell.

Finally, his grandmother liked a pinch of filé—the ground sassafras leaves first used by the Native Americans of the American South, which included the people of the Choctaw Nation; It was later adopted by French chefs – it thickens the stew and adds herbal flavor. However, his mother always passed on the strong spice, which is why Ball optionally stores it in a shaker. A collection of hot sauces, many shared by locals, once numbered 69 bottles but now number just a dozen. Ball recommends tasting the gumbo before adding hot sauce, and for some heat, he goes with the classic Louisiana Crystal or the East Bay's local Lucky Dog.

From the open kitchen, Ball watches as customers dig in and sit back. He often hears people say, “Man, this is taking me back” or “Damn, I haven't had a good bowl of gumbo in a long time.” Sometimes he can see the wheels turning, and especially when a customer with one When someone has a clear opinion, it may take them all the way to the bottom of the bowl to figure out exactly what they like. “It's a dish that reflects well what America is supposed to be,” says Ball. “A melting pot of different cultures.” He tastes the African ingredients, the indigenous flavors, the French techniques and different perspectives. “Similar to jazz, we all play together. It doesn’t matter who comes from where, we all make music together.”

The Long Beach Ballet (LBB) successfully held its annual event “The Nutcracker” Extravaganza during five performances last weekend – complete with numerous artists, magnificent sets, exciting pyrotechnics and of course beautiful ballet dancing.

The conception, direction and choreography of the LBB's artistic director, David Wilcox, shone in this year's production. A humble chimney sweep (Ken Datugan), looking for work in the home of young Clara (played wonderfully by Maeve Callahan) and her family, helps greet party guests on Christmas Eve.

In addition to the full orchestra playing Tchaikovsky's melodic score (excellently conducted by Roger Hickman), what immediately stands out are the highly detailed costumes by a number of designers (Adrian Clarke, Donna Dickens, Ann de Farra, Hilde Byrne and Cheryl Cartwright). Of particular note were the girls' frocks and women's dresses, which were similar in style but featured uniquely charming patterns and textures, as well as lots of bows.

Equally enchanting were the floor-to-ceiling sets (designed by Elliott Hessayon, Rex Heuschkel and Scott Shaffer), with a wall of portraits in Clara's warm family home and a decorated Christmas tree and presents that magically grew as her perspective changed changed from her beloved Nutcracker puppet (a sturdy Benjohn Magcalas) when he came to life to defend her against creepy mice led by a melodramatic Mouse King (Craig Rexroad).

Delzio Design's pyrotechnics surprised during this battle as the Nutcracker and his army fired cannons and muskets with loud bangs and glowing sparks. And when the Nutcracker turned into a prince (Steven Morse), he and Clara rose into the air in a sleigh at the end of the first act, before floating angels opened the second act.

Despite the captivating production, it was the music and ballet dancing that kept the audience's attention. The Long Beach Terrace Theater's acoustics allowed the tunes to resonate loud and clear while remaining sharp. And the many young LBB students and their talented teachers confidently took the stage in their various dances that evoked snow and sweets.

Megan Wilcox as Sugarplum Fairy stood out for her poise and precision. Her Grand pas de deux with our handsome Nutcracker Prince Morse (from the San Francisco Ballet) was both technically and aesthetically exquisite. Aurora Gray's technique as a dewdrop fairy was also fascinating.

The sporty and exuberant performances of the three Russian dance artists (Alfredo Garcia, Hector Garcia and Magcalas), who stole the show, were extremely graceful, as were two cheerful fools (Aaron Augustin and the young acrobatic Emily Medillin).

If you weren't able to attend LBB's The Nutcracker this year, mark your calendars for December 2022, when LBB will most likely return for its annual performance. Like “The Nutcracker,” the ballet “Don Quixote” includes a dreamlike adventure, sword fights, fairies and even puppetry. And like “The Nutcracker,” LBB will likely fill the stage with dozens of engaging and graceful performers, beautiful costumes and fun sets, all backed by a live orchestra.

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) -It’s a seasonal shift long known to firefighters. When the weather turns cold, home fires follow.

This time of year the Reno Fire Department responds to 5 to 7 home fires a week. They range in size and damage, but any fire in a home is a threat to those inside. And the reason for many will be our search for wintertime warmth using heating sources which we don’t think about until we need them.

“You want to make sure that we’re a little more vigilant this time of year,” says Reno Fire Captain John Beck, “We’re doing things that we don’t do much of the rest of the season so it’s important to keep those things in mind.”

Fireplaces and wood-burning stoves sit unused much of the year. Then when we need them we expect them to work. But, Beck says the whole system, including the flue and chimney, has been sitting unused and unmaintained and trouble may be lurking unseen.

“When you have flues or chimneys that become clogged or blocked with nests, debris or leaves,”>

Another danger is harder to see. As we burn wood a residue of creosote builds up in the chimney.

“That creosote is actually a fuel, so it can catch on fire. it can actually block the chimney itself.”

So, it’s a good idea to call in a professional chimney sweep before the cold weather hits. If you haven’t done it lately you likely don’t know what the inside of your chimney looks like and you might want to find out.

While we’re on the subject you should keep the fireplace or stove clean and dispose of any ashes in a safe metal container.

“Ash can retain heat for a long, long time. We’re talking days if not weeks. You get a windy day and all of a sudden you’ve got a fire. That’s what happened with the Washoe Drive Fire.”

Anyone who remembers that fire–one death,$4.5 million in damages–can tell you what a little wind with some supposedly spent ashes can do very quickly.

NILES, Ohio (WKBN) — Winter in Northeast Ohio often brings cold, wet and frozen conditions that are here to stay. This weather makes it difficult to protect homes from damage.

Melvin Tenney, store manager at Handyman Supply in Niles, said now is the time to assess your home so it’s protected from the elements as winter continues.

“Make sure all your shingles are on tight, make sure if you do have a leak, you have it sealed,” he said.

Tenney said all homeowners should have their furnace inspected, check any leaks and get your driveway sealed.

“Want to make sure your cracks are filled, driveway is sealed — with those new and old driveways, you want to use salt that isn’t damaging, which is calcium,” he said.

Spending more now to prepare your home for winter could save you thousands of dollars in the long run.

“We’ve seen burst pipes each year account for thousands of dollars in insurance claims, per homeowner, that can be $5,000 or more,” said Sarah Dillingham with the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety.

Tenney said you should insulate those pipes to prevent cracking.

“You can do a foam insulation, or a wrap, even heat tape. Depending on your circumstances there is different levels of cost there,” he said.

Insulation materials are available at any local hardware store — and if you decide to do some holiday traveling, there’s a few things you can do ahead of time so you don’t return from your Christmas celebration to a disaster.

“Make sure that you don’t set your thermostat too low while you’re gone, you want to make sure it is set no lower than 55 degrees to ensure those pipes around your home are kept warmer,” Dillingham said.

The New Conservatory Theatre Center (NCTC) is bringing holiday joy with Oy Vey in a Manger, a “bawdy and blasphemous” musical featuring the Kinsey Sicks, a Dragapella® Beautyshop Quartet (through Saturday, December 31), and then starts the new year with Getting There, a story about two friends who travel to Paris and have a falling out that sends them on separate journeys that change everyone involved forever (Friday, January 20-Thursday, February 26).

Berkeley Rep brings us a reimagined Wuthering Heights, a music- and dance-infused adaptation of Emily Bronte’s gothic tome (through Sunday, January 1). And if tragedies aren’t your jam, you’re in luck because they’re following it up with Clyde’s, a Tony award-nominated, feel-good comic drama about a “formerly incarcerated kitchen staff at a truck-stop sandwich shop attempting to rebuild their lives” (Friday, January 20-Thursday, February 26).

Noise Pop Festival is coming in big this year in honor of its 30th anniversary and is bringing indie artists from around the world to SF for a week of concerts, art shows, film screenings, happy hours, and after-hours parties. Phase I artists include Yo La Tengo, Boy Harsher, Duster, STRFKR, FIDLAR, Bob Mould (solo electric set), Covet, Tourist, Mareux, No Vacation, and so many more. There are a few new installations this year, including a “Fallen Tree” seating area and “sapling” trees with “hidden world tree knots.”

Presidio Bowl has 12 lanes, an internet jukebox, 45 beers, 19 wines, a full bar, and a pretty typical bowling alley menu. Mission Bowling Club is a little fancier with legit food (including a great burger) and cocktails, but only six lanes, so you’ll definitely need to plan ahead.

San Francisco could use a little love right now, and it gets more than a little during “Dear San Francisco: A High-Flying Love Story,” an immersive performance/homage to this wild town told via how-do-they-do-that acrobatics, including hoop diving, Chinese pole, juggling, spoken word, video projections, shadow play, and original music. And though those things might sound like they’re for kids, this show is definitely more adult-friendly, especially if you order a bottle of wine and some fancy grown-up snacks and desserts to enjoy while you watch. Even if you’ve already seen the show, the performers—and the feats they perform—change, making this a show you can definitely see more than once.

If you’re near Divisadero, check out Emporium, a huge bi-level movie-theater-turned-arcade, which also has pool tables, foosball, air hockey, and DJs spinning on the weekends. And on Market Street in the Castro, there’s The Detour, a cozier bar but still stocked with all of the greatest hits, plus lots of board games, Asian-inspired snacks, trivia nights, drag bingo, and more.

Thanks to the voters of San Francisco, John F. Kennedy Drive in Golden Gate Park will now be permanently car-free. Take advantage of the fact that you can walk, run, bike, skip, pogo stick, and more in the middle of the street all winter. Don’t forget to check out “Paint the Promenade,” an ongoing installation from Paint the Void, a non-profit that “brings creativity to everyday urban spaces while supporting local artists.” The installation includes the beloved Doggie Diner heads along JFK Drive between Conservatory Drive West and 6th Avenues, 100 (comfy!) chairs set up for relaxing, two pianos that anyone can play, and more.

Put on your most comfortable sneakers and head out on the Crosstown Trail, a 17-mile urban hike that takes you through tons of SF neighborhoods, including McLaren Park, Glen Canyon, Golden Gate Park, and Seacliff. The trail is a mix of paved roads/paths and trails, is about 2,600 feet of elevation, and offers great views, cool tiled staircases, a chance to see SF in a whole new way, and satisfaction for having actually done it.

Learn the story of California’s Boom and Bust by playing miniature golf at SF’s only outdoor miniature golf course. Put the ball into a Barbary Coast Saloon, through a gold mine, and around “Golden Gate Park,” while reading cool factoids along the way. To help maintain a safe environment, you’ll have to make a reservation, which involves a little planning, but is definitely worth it. Especially because the course is also located within Parklab Gardens (a food truck park and beer garden) so you can celebrate your win (or lament your defeat) with some tasty treats and a cold one.

This 55-acre urban oasis with more than 9,000 plants from around the world is always a great place to go for a mini escape. You’ll just have to pop open a plant app to see what you’re enjoying since we aren’t exactly certified botanists.

Don’t overlook skylights. Have a professional check for deteriorating seals on the roof and inside your home that may need patching, Graham advises.​

5. Do a sweep of fireplaces and stoves

Clean chimneys before winter to ensure the flue isn’t blocked, soot hasn’t accumulated and the brick-and-mortar joints aren’t leaking water or fumes, Wessling says. Check that a gas stove burns properly and is free of carbon buildup, he adds. DIYers should make sure to use a non-combustible sealant. A professional chimney sweep may cost $130 to $380. Look for one through the Chimney Safety Institute of America.​

6. Tackle yardwork​

Clearing tree limbs and other vegetation from steps, walkways and yards may help prevent falls and wildfires. Studies by Michigan State University and Purdue University recommend mowing leaves without the bag, instead of raking, because the smaller leaf pieces decompose more quickly. Remove tree limbs close to your home or a power line. Prune trees overhanging the roof or if you live where winter storms can topple trees onto your home.​

This is the season when your lawnmower needs a bit of TLC too. Any fuel inside the engine will decompose during winter, which may make it difficult to start next spring. Mower maker John Deere recommends cleaning the machine, lubricating it and following the manual for tire pressure in colder temperatures. If you use a fuel stabilizer, fill the tank; otherwise, run the engine to empty it. Store the mower in a dry place or outside covered by waterproof material.​

7. Drain exterior water​

Water left in pipes and garden hoses can freeze, causing them to burst. Disconnect, drain and store hoses. Wessling also recommends turning off outside water at the surface valve and draining any water remaining in the faucets. If you have a lawn irrigation system, have your sprinkler service drain it for $50 to $200 to avoid leaks or damage from freezing.​

8. Put swimming pools to bed

Not properly preparing a pool for winter can cause major damage. First, remove all pool accessories. If you have an inflatable pool, disconnect the water source and pump, empty it, deflate it and let it dry completely before storing it in a dry place. For a hard-sided, above-ground pool, follow the instructions of the winterization kit you’ll need to buy.​

For an in-ground pool, clean it, adjust the water chemistry, lower the water level to 6 to 12 inches below the skimmer (a filter on the side of pools). Drain the filters, pump and heater (you may not need to drain if you live in a warmer climate) and store them indoors. Cover the pool securely.​

Whether you watched the antics of Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Chandler, Joey, and (ugh) Ross the first time around or found the show later on via reruns, if you’re a fan of the Friends sitcom, you’ll want to check out “The FRIENDS Experience: The One in San Francisco,” a cheesy, but fun, immersive museum experience, complete with set replicas of Central Perk, Monica and Rachel’s apartment, and the famous couch in front of the fountain from the show’s opening credits (albeit without any actual water). If you love plays and musicals, you’re going to be very excited about what’s happening on stage in SF this winter.

At Marin Theatre Company, you can see August Wilson’s Two Trains Running, his seventh of 10 plays in the American Century Cycle that chronicles the African American experience in the 20th Century. This one is about a restaurant owner and his regular customers in 1969 Pittsburgh as they face a changing neighborhood and the struggles that come with it (through Sunday, December 18).

BroadwaySF has something for everyone, including a dazzling production of Disney’s Frozen, which is definitely not just for kids (through Friday, December 30); an irreverent and fun musical production of Beetlejuice which will delight fans of the original Tim Burton film and create many new ones in its wake (through Saturday, December 31); R.E.S.P.E.C.T, a two-night only celebration of the music of Aretha Franklin (Friday, January 6-Saturday, January 7); the return of Dear Evan Hansen, a moving Tony award-winning musical about a teenager with social anxiety and depression who benefits by turning a tragedy into a lie all while affirming the belief that there is room for everyone to feel loved and accepted (Tuesday, January 24-Sunday, February 19); and Mean Girls, a hit musical based on the movie with a book written by Tina Fey, so you know it’s actually funny (Tuesday, January 31-Sunday, February 26).

The New Conservatory Theatre Center (NCTC) is bringing holiday joy with Oy Vey in a Manger, a “bawdy and blasphemous” musical featuring the Kinsey Sicks, a Dragapella® Beautyshop Quartet (through Saturday, December 31), and then starts the new year with Getting There, a story about two friends who travel to Paris and have a falling out that sends them on separate journeys that change everyone involved forever (Friday, January 20-Thursday, February 26).

Berkeley Rep brings us a reimagined Wuthering Heights, a music- and dance-infused adaptation of Emily Bronte’s gothic tome (through Sunday, January 1). And if tragedies aren’t your jam, you’re in luck because they’re following it up with Clyde’s, a Tony award-nominated, feel-good comic drama about a “formerly incarcerated kitchen staff at a truck-stop sandwich shop attempting to rebuild their lives” (Friday, January 20-Thursday, February 26).

SF Sketchfest returns for its 20th year this January with a star-studded lineup and a chance to see well-known comedians, up-and-comers, and local performers in a bunch of intimate venues, like the Castro Theatre, PianoFight, and Swedish American Hall. Whether you enjoy sketch, stand-up, alternative comedy, music, improv, films, tributes, all-star reunions, live podcasts, or panel discussions, there’s a show you’ll want to snag tix for. This January brings the Zinfandel Experience, with three days of wine and food, including a fancy opening night dinner, seminars, and a grand tasting (Thursday, January 26-Saturday, January 28); Bay Area Brew Fest, which is returning to Fort Mason after a three-year hiatus with over 50 breweries, hundreds of beers, food trucks, DJs, and more (Saturday, January 28); Noir City Film Festival, 10 days of film noir and rare films (Friday, January 20-Sunday, 29); the Napa Truffle Festival, where you can learn about and eat truffles in seminars, lunches and more (Friday, January 13-Monday, 16); Winter WINEland in Sonoma, two days of discovering and enjoying over 70 of Sonoma’s best wineries (Saturday, January 14-Sunday, January 15); SF Indie Fest, 11 days of indie movies (Friday, February 3-Monday, February 13); and SF Beer Week, when you can spend the entire week going to all kinds of beer-specific activities, including tastings, comedy shows, talks, and more (Friday, February 10-Sunday, February, 19).

Noise Pop Festival is coming in big this year in honor of its 30th anniversary and is bringing indie artists from around the world to SF for a week of concerts, art shows, film screenings, happy hours, and after-hours parties. Phase I artists include Yo La Tengo, Boy Harsher, Duster, STRFKR, FIDLAR, Bob Mould (solo electric set), Covet, Tourist, Mareux, No Vacation, and so many more. They’ll be playing at venues like the G American Music Hall, Bottom of the Hill, The Chapel, Rickshaw Stop, The Regency Ballroom, August Hall, The New Parish, Gray Area, and Public Works.

Returning for its third year, “Entwined” is an immersive forest of illuminated color in Peacock Meadow (just east of the Conservatory of Flowers). LED light sculptures fill the space to create twisting paths among flowering clusters and trees that shift colors and light. There are a few new installations this year, including a “Fallen Tree” seating area and “sapling” trees with “hidden world tree knots.”

Whether you want classic bowling or a fine-dining lane-side experience, SF has you covered. Presidio Bowl has 12 lanes, an internet jukebox, 45 beers, 19 wines, a full bar, and a pretty typical bowling alley menu. Mission Bowling Club is a little fancier with legit food (including a great burger) and cocktails, but only six lanes, so you’ll definitely need to plan ahead.

San Francisco could use a little love right now, and it gets more than a little during “Dear San Francisco: A High-Flying Love Story,” an immersive performance/homage to this wild town told via how-do-they-do-that acrobatics, including hoop diving, Chinese pole, juggling, spoken word, video projections, shadow play, and original music. And though those things might sound like they’re for kids, this show is definitely more adult-friendly, especially if you order a bottle of wine and some fancy grown-up snacks and desserts to enjoy while you watch. Even if you’ve already seen the show, the performers—and the feats they perform—change, making this a show you can definitely see more than once.

Thriller Social Club SF

Whatever your game—Ms. Pac-Man, Mortal Kombat, pinball, pop-a-shot, or skee ball—you’ll likely find it at one of SF’s grown-up barcades. The newest one to open—Thriller Social Club in the Mission, is two stories of fun with all of the classics, including eight skee ball lanes, the most expensive golf simulator in the world, a couple of bars, and legit food—looking at you 13-inch hot dog. If you’re near Divisadero, check out Emporium, a huge bi-level movie-theater-turned-arcade, which also has pool tables, foosball, air hockey, and DJs spinning on the weekends. And on Market Street in the Castro, there’s The Detour, a cozier bar but still stocked with all of the greatest hits, plus lots of board games, Asian-inspired snacks, trivia nights, drag bingo, and more.

The historic Ferry Building is pretty to look at, but, more importantly, behind those good looks is a fantastic personality in the form of delicious artisan food, including Señor Sisig’s newest location, and Grande Crêperie, a concept from Le Marais Bakery that’s all about savory and sweet crêpes and artisanal all-butter croissants and pastries. Eat lunch by the water at Hog Island Oyster Company or get a delicious burger and milkshake on Gott’s Roadside’s patio. Grab a canned cocktail at Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant and a cupcake from Miette to enjoy while sitting on a bench with views of the Bay Bridge. Buy bagels for tomorrow’s breakfast at Daily Driver. The beloved farmers market is still popping up on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, so you can also shop for high-quality products from small, sustainable growers and producers who will appreciate your support.

Golden Gate Park
Thanks to the voters of San Francisco, John F. Kennedy Drive in Golden Gate Park will now be permanently car-free. Take advantage of the fact that you can walk, run, bike, skip, pogo stick, and more in the middle of the street all winter. Don’t forget to check out “Paint the Promenade,” an ongoing installation from Paint the Void, a non-profit that “brings creativity to everyday urban spaces while supporting local artists.” The installation includes the beloved Doggie Diner heads along JFK Drive between Conservatory Drive West and 6th Avenues, 100 (comfy!) chairs set up for relaxing, two pianos that anyone can play, and more.

Put on your most comfortable sneakers and head out on the Crosstown Trail, a 17-mile urban hike that takes you through tons of SF neighborhoods, including McLaren Park, Glen Canyon, Golden Gate Park, and Seacliff. The trail is a mix of paved roads/paths and trails, is about 2,600 feet of elevation, and offers great views, cool tiled staircases, a chance to see SF in a whole new way, and satisfaction for having actually done it.

Learn the story of California’s Boom and Bust by playing miniature golf at SF’s only outdoor miniature golf course. Put the ball into a Barbary Coast Saloon, through a gold mine, and around “Golden Gate Park,” while reading cool factoids along the way. To help maintain a safe environment, you’ll have to make a reservation, which involves a little planning, but is definitely worth it. Especially because the course is also located within Parklab Gardens (a food truck park and beer garden) so you can celebrate your win (or lament your defeat) with some tasty treats and a cold one.

This 55-acre urban oasis with more than 9,000 plants from around the world is always a great place to go for a mini escape. Pack a picnic to enjoy on the grounds or wander through the gardens and visit flora from Australia, Chile, South Africa, and more, all in one afternoon. You’ll just have to pop open a plant app to see what you’re enjoying since we aren’t exactly certified botanists.

Maybe it’s just me but what’s so riveting about the Winter Olympics?

Outside of ski jumping, slalom skiing, bobsled, luge and hockey, it’s either X Games on steroids or figure skating that’s more boring than watching ice melt.

And then there’s curling. It’s essentially shuffleboard on ice by people who look more like bowlers than athletes. big deal I’d much rather watch an Eskimo Pie eating contest. Don’t laugh. Much of the Winter Olympics menu is made-up novelty competitions.

The Winter Olympics were created to cut countries who are mostly frozen tundra a break because they’re terrible at real sports thanks to fields too slippery to practice on.

After all, when’s the last time a guy from Lapland quarterbacked in the Super Bowl or pitched in Game 7 of the World Series or won the Masters or reached the Wimbledon final? I rest my case.

Speaking of the Super Bowl, maybe it’s just me but is Joe Burrow the only reason the Cincinnati Bengals are in this year’s Grand Spectacle? The Bengals were the Bungles for about 317 years until they drafted this kid.

The Los Angeles Rams, who traded away all their future No. 1 draft picks into the next century just to stockpile this year’s team with superstars, are favored to win the Super Bowl.

So what? Even though Cincinnati’s offensive line couldn’t block a hat let alone that ferocious Los Angeles pass rush, destiny is riding on the rocket right arm of Burrow.

Only two quarterbacks have ever won a national championship in college and the Super Bowl. A couple of Joes in Namath with Alabama and the New York Jets and Montana with Notre Dame and the San Francisco 49ers.

FYI, Burrow won a national championship at LSU. Talk about an omen jumping up and slapping you in the face. Want to bet a cup of Joe on this Joe joining Namath and Montana in pulling off a college/pro championship tandem?

Maybe it’s just me but why doesn’t the Super Bowl halftime entertainment ever feature Snoop Dogg rapping Tennyson’s poetry about the British cavalry?

Maybe it’s just me but isn’t it way past time we stop making Americans file federal, state and local income taxes?

Just deduct the taxes from our paychecks and be done with it. I’ll gladly live without a tax return if you spare me the paperwork. Better yet, let our rich Uncle Sam automatically send all of us a healthy tax refund and let Joe Biden worry about inflation soaring like a Jeff Bezos rocket.

Maybe it’s just me but I found it hard to feel sorry for the folks at the Jersey shore who got buried up to their eyebrows in snow last weekend. How many times have we long-suffering folks in Berks County been entombed in an avalanche while the beachcombers only got rain?

Maybe it’s just me but did you ever notice that people who don’t sweat anything never have dehydrated spirits?

Maybe it’s just me but why do women need bedroom closets bigger than Japan?

Maybe it’s just me but did you ever notice that promise and fulfillment don’t always share the same zip code?

Maybe it’s just me but did you ever notice that the night becomes crowded with hostile voices and vices in hard, mean neighborhoods known to erupt in anarchy?

Maybe it’s just me but did you ever wonder why salesmen whose line is doorknobs never sell door to door?

Maybe it’s just me but did you ever feel an arctic wind shake a joist or beam loose in your spinal infrastructure?

Maybe it’s just me but did you ever notice that people whose ego is their personal chauffeur never seem to go anywhere?

Maybe it’s just me but do politicians ever get tired of pounding the pudding out of one another?

Maybe it’s just me but did you ever notice that guys with broad shoulders have trouble finding work as a chimney sweep?

Maybe it’s just me but did you ever notice that life has a darker side when viewed through the neon prism of a cocktail lounge?
