49ers QB Trey Lance Cleared For Season Opener Vs. Lions, Taylor Decker Sidelined – CBS San Francisco

SANTA CLARA (AP) – Rookie quarterback Trey Lance survived a week of training with no setbacks on his injured right index finger and is allowed to play at the San Francisco 49ers season opener in Detroit.

Lance suffered a small chip break in the index finger of his throwing hand at the show finale on August 29th. He missed about a week of training before returning on Wednesday. He has been restricted for the past three days but has been able to throw and snap shots and has no injury label for Sunday’s game.

He is expected to be available when trainer Kyle Shanahan chooses to use him in a situational package to complement starter Jimmy Garoppolo.

The Lions will have to forego a key player of their own as Taylor Decker is out Sunday with a finger injury. Decker injured himself blocking the pass in training and will likely need surgery.

“It was just a pass protection,” said coach Dan Campbell. “He threw the blow, threw the hand and the injury happened. It’s more on the finger. “

Decker has started all but one game on the left tackle for the past three seasons. The Lions could drop first-round rookie Penei Sewell off the right tackle to fill that spot and protect Jared Goff’s blind side from a defensive line led by 2019 Defensive Rookie of the Year Nick Bosa.

“When we get to that, he’s played that in college and it’s something he’s comfortable with,” said Campbell. “But he also makes himself quite comfortable. That’s what we’re going to need – it’s that fine balance between who do you think it’s best to switch to the left versus that Decker will be back shortly. “

The other likely options in tackle for Detroit are to move Matt Nelson or Halapoulivaati Vaitai from guard to guard and play Logan Stenberg as guard.

The Niners will have to do without receiver Jalen Hurd, who is expected to go to the injured reserve for the third time in a row with a knee injury.

Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw (knee) and cornerback Emmanuel Moseley (knee) are both doubtful as to what could force San Francisco to fight a little defensively.

While the Niners have depth on the defensive with Kentavius Street, Zach Kerr and Kevin Givens, the cornerback situation is less certain when Moseley cannot start.

Veteran Josh Norman signed on earlier this week and is on his way after missing out on training camp.

San Francisco also has rookies Ambry Thomas and Deommodore Lenoir or could promote Dontae Johnson from the practice team for the game.

The Lions also listed four players as questionable for Sunday: DE Michael Brockers (shoulder), DT Levi Onwuzurike (hip), CB AJ Parker (shoulder) and DE Nicholas Williams (elbow).
