There was a time in the 1990s when it seemed half of the US was wearing Gap clothing.

The iconic fashion brand was founded during the summer of 1969 in San Francisco and over the decades made its way into the cultural psyche. It was hard not to walk down the street and see the three big letters blazoned across at least a few people’s sweatshirt.

Eventually there were almost 3,500 stores worldwide while supermodels, from Cindy Crawford to Naomi Campbell, and famous actors, from Salma Hayek to Chris Evans, advertised the clothing. However, the high street stalwart – famous for its casual denims and laid-back slacks – began to struggle in the face of changing technology by the 2010s.

A short statement on Gap’s site in 2020 noted that the company made the decision to close hundreds of its stores – along with Gap-owned Banana Republic stores – down due to the impact of online demand and current market conditions. It read: “As we adapt to the current market conditions and meet the increase in online demand, we are looking thoughtfully at our real estate to support the best path forward.

“In October 2020, we shared that we plan to close approximately 350 of Gap and Banana Republic stores across North America by the end of 2023, with the goal of having a smaller and healthier fleet of stores.”

With this in mind, below is a list of the Gap – including Baby and Kids – and Banana Republic stores across the US that are no more between the last quarter of 2020 and now.
