eel self heating bench at seat, san francisco

“Eel” installation by Veev for the biennial “Seat” street furniture exhibition in San Francisco
“Aal” is a sculptural installation that responds to environmental conditions and the presence of visitors by changing its color and light and generating heat on its surface. The project, consisting of laminated acrylic panels into which an interior sculpture has been CNC-carved, is the work of Veev, the experimental design studio of Thai-born, US-based architect Raveevarn Choksombatchai in collaboration with Norbert Wong, Sarah Witkin and Zachary Streitz.
Used as a seat, the surface of “Eel” only emits heat when the sculpture detects that visitors are nearby, and emits a range of colors and intensities of light in response to environmental stimuli. The interior figure appears to appear and disappear due to the refraction of light as visitors take different perspectives. The project examines the performative and transformative quality of architecture as a response to changing environmental conditions, raises parallels to issues of climate change and draws attention to fluctuations in our living environment.
“Eel” can be seen at the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco through June 2013 as part of the “Seat” exhibition.
