Last chance for mochi: SF’s 116-year-old mochi spot will be closed forever

It’s sad to see historic shops close, but at least in the case of Benkyodo, we have a chance to say goodbye with one final tidbit. This legendary Japantown bakery, which opened in 1906 and makes handmade rice cakes, manju, and mochi, has announced that it will be closed forever unless someone buys the business. After a break in the holidays, the owners are planning to temporarily reopen for the last time from January 11th and then to close at some point “after the New Year” on an open date and then to retire for good.

Temporary reopening Tuesday, January 11th, 9 am-3pm (or until sold out), 1747 Buchanan St., SF Cash only. funcheap.com
