FBI raids Dem California mayor’s residence as she faces recall effort

FBI agents raided the home of Oakland, California Mayor Sheng Thao Thursday as part of an investigation reportedly involving both the Democratic mayor and her boyfriend.

Video circulating social media shows agents taking boxes out of the mayor’s house. ABC7 San Francisco journalist Dan Noyes reported the investigation was due to potential public corruption by the couple.

The San Francisco FBI told The National Desk (TND) it conducted “court-authorized law enforcement activity” at the property, adding it is “unable to provide additional information at this time.”

Thao has fielded criticism from Oakland residents recently over crime in the city and is currently facing a recall effort.

“In just a year, Thao’s incompetence and dishonesty accelerated Oakland’s decline, causing longstanding businesses to close and generational families to leave,” a site organizing the vote reads. “Mayor Sheng Thao mishandled a major ransomware attack, provided false information about new police cameras, oversaw record-low 911 response times jeopardizing state funding, consistently claimed ‘crime is down’ despite evidence to the contrary, and faces multiple ongoing Public Ethics investigations.”

The mayor also allegedly played a role in driving out the city’s MLB team, saying the Oakland Athletics “won’t be missed.”

The raid comes less than a day after a shooting in Oakland left several people injured. The shooting began after a fight broke out near a crowd of approximately 5,000 people, according to police.

Thao’s office did not respond to a request for comment from TND Thursday.
