Living in a unique historic building is something many people in San Francisco would love to do. But you can draw the line when you live in an old hospital.

The Presidio Public Health Service Hospital was built in 1932, replacing an older hospital building that served the area’s military residents. It was closed in 1981, briefly used as the Defense Language Institute, and abandoned in 1988 and left empty. It quickly became a popular spot for graffiti artists and those looking to explore abandoned buildings, and remained largely dilapidated for decades.

In 2010 it was finally converted into apartments and even received LEED certification. However, since this is an old hospital, it’s no surprise that you occasionally hear stories of the supernatural that inhabit the building. According to San Francisco Ghost Tours, visitors should be careful outside the sixth floor, as this is where staff will conduct medical research and animal testing. There was also a former morgue on the premises and allegedly a murder in 2002. There is even a Yelp page for the old hospital building where the reviews tell old ghost stories.

Craigslist

If a little hauntedness from your upstairs neighbors doesn’t scare you, there are a few one bedroom apartments on the 5th floor advertised on Craigslist. Each unit has approximately 700 square feet of bathroom and appears to have been recently renovated. The kitchen appliances look new, there appears to be a dishwasher and there is plenty of storage space too.
