James Marino Obituary –


James V. Marino Jan. 6, 1930 – Nov. 2, 2009 James Marino passed away in Saratoga, California November 2, 2009. James was born to Benjamin and Grace Marino in San Francisco, later moving to Palo Alto. After graduating from Palo Alto High School in 1947, he attended San Jose State until he was accepted to UCSF School of Dentistry in 1950. He received his B.S. and DDS degrees from UCSF in 1954. Jim met Claire at UCSF and they married in January 1954. Later in 1954, to fulfill his military commitment, he joined the Navy. Upon graduation he reported to Camp Pendleton as a dental officer where he was attached to the 3rd Marine Division. After a very brief tour, orders came for him to go to Korea. From Korea he was ordered to Japan where he was stationed on Mt. Fuji. Claire joined him in Japan where she lived in a hotel from April to November, 1955 when Jim was ordered back to Alameda Naval Air Station. In August 1956, Jim was discharged from the Navy and moved to Saratoga. He opened his own dental practice in Sunnyvale in the fall of 1956. Jim lived with Claire in Saratoga for over 53 years. He was a man of many passions including the opera, trains, and baseball. His interests also included antiques, early American firearms and automated musical instruments. Anyone who knew Jim was fond of him. His humor, smile, and character were contagious. Throughout his life he was a proud member of the Portola Valley & Alpine Railroad, Golden Gate Live Steamers, Sons of the American Revolution, and Saratoga Men’s Club. He also coached Pony and Colt baseball teams while his son, David, was growing up. But the real loves of Jim’s life were his wife, Claire, of almost 55 years, and his family. Jim is survived by his wife, Claire; daughter, Linda Dulaney and husband, Ken; son, David Marino and wife, Cindy, and granddaughter, Lauren. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, December 7, 2009 at 11:00 AM at DARLING FISCHER Chapel of the Hills, 615 N. Santa Cruz Avenue, Los Gatos, CA.
