Phillies hit three dwelling runs to comb Dodgers
PHILADELPHIA — Brandon Marsh hit a home run and an RBI triple, Trea Turner launched his sixth long ball in nine games and the Philadelphia Phillies completed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 5-1 victory Thursday night.
Aaron Nola (11-4) struck out nine in six innings and Kyle Schwarber also went deep for the Phillies, who swept the Dodgers for the first time since 2011 — and the first time in Philadelphia since 2008. Los Angeles has lost four straight overall.
“(Nola’s) been tremendous,” Phillies Manager Rob Thomson said. “He’s Mr. Consistency. You look at tonight’s game, and the first two innings he’s in trouble, and he keeps grinding and battling. In the second inning (with the bases loaded) he strikes out (Shohei) Ohtani and gets a groundball from (Will) Smith and gets out of it. Then he settled in and as the game went on, he got better. He’s been dynamite all year.”
In a matchup between the top two teams in the National League, the Phillies led in every inning of the series except for the first one on Tuesday, which ended with both teams scoreless. They outscored the Dodgers 19-5 in the three games.
“I’d be lying if I said we didn’t wake up differently for games like this,” Marsh said. “It’s a big test for us to see where we stand and I think we held our own.”
Marsh clubbed a 3-1 fastball from Landon Knack into the right-field seats leading off the second inning. Marsh then ripped a triple off Knack down the right-field line in the sixth, scoring Nick Castellanos to put the Phillies ahead 3-1.
Marsh is batting .304 with all nine of his homers against right-handed pitchers this season.
“I’m going to take a page out of (Castellanos’) book,” Marsh said. “It’s just see ball, hit ball. Keep it simple. It’s hard enough as it is. The second you try to complicate it even more, it’s just downhill. … Just trust the work and stay stubborn to it.”
REDS 8, ROCKIES 1 Tyler Stephenson homered twice and drove in five runs, helping Hunter Greene and Cincinnati beat Colorado. Greene (6-4) struck out a season-high 10 in six innings. The All-Star right-hander allowed one run and two hits. Jonathan India and Spencer Steer each had three hits and scored two runs for the Reds.
METS 7, NATIONALS 0 Brandon Nimmo hit a bases-clearing double to spark a five-run fifth inning, David Peterson threw six scoreless innings and New York moved into playoff position with a victory over Washington, completing a three-game sweep. J.D. Martinez and Pete Alonso added RBI singles as the Mets moved two games over .500 for the first time since April 24.
DIAMONDBACKS 1, BRAVES 0 Eugenio Suarez hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, providing the only offense Arizona needed for a win over Atlanta. Brandon Pfaadt earned his fourth victory of the season after holding the Braves to just 3 hits over 6 innings with 4 strikeouts.

RED SOX 7, ATHLETICS 0 All-Star pitcher Tanner Houck limited Oakland to two hits in six innings and Connor Wong, Wilyer Abreu and Masataka Yoshida homered to help Boston beat Oakland. Yoshida went 3 for 4 and drove in 4 runs, Abreu also was 3 for 4, and Wong and David Hamilton each had two hits.
RAYS 5, YANKEES 3 Brandon Lowe’s RBI single put Tampa Bay ahead to stay in a three-run fifth inning as the Rays took two of three games from New York, which lost for the 18th time in 25 games and extended its streak of winless series to eight.
MARINERS 11, ANGELS 0 Cal Raleigh hit a three-run home run and a solo shot to help Seattle blow out Los Angeles. The Mariners jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, thanks mainly to Jorge Polanco’s two-run single, before Raleigh’s solo home run in the third and J.P. Crawford’s two-run home run in the fourth. Crawford added an RBI single in the sixth before Raleigh’s big blast.
INTERLEAGUE
CUBS 8, ORIOLES 0 Justin Steele pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, Seiya Suzuki had three extra-base hits and three RBI, and the Chicago Cubs blanked Baltimore for a three-game sweep. BLUE JAYS 5, GIANTS 3 Danny Jansen and Spencer Horwitz homered, Kevin Gausman pitched seven strong innings against his former team and Toronto beat San Francisco.
ASTROS 5, MARLINS 3 Houston was held to five hits Thursday night, but made the most of them in a victory over Miami.
