San Francisco murder: Child’s caregiver arrested

A San Francisco man is charged with murder in connection with the death of a 7-month-old boy who suffered a violent blunt trauma to his head last week, prosecutors say.

Police said officers were called to California Pacific Medical Center near Geary and Van Ness on April 20 after an unresponsive toddler was pronounced dead. Hospital staff reported signs of trauma to the child identified as Synciere Williams.

The boy was brought in by Joseph Williams, 26, who was identified as his “caregiver”. The boy was not related to him, the police said.

Under investigation, Williams was arrested on suspicion of murder, assaulting a child, and disabling an officer. According to prison records, he is being held without bail.

San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin said Williams had two domestic violence arrests this year involving a woman with whom he was intimate but who was not the baby’s mother. In both cases, the woman chose not to join the prosecution, and prosecutors didn’t have enough evidence to prosecute Williams, Boudin said.
