Sean McDermott continues transferring up the longest-tenured coach rankings

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott was hired in 2017. That was only five years ago, but in the NFL’s ever-changing landscape, it makes him one of the longest-serving leaders in the entire league.

First on the list shouldn’t come as a surprise, since Bill Belichick has been on the sidelines for the New England Patriots since Bill Clinton’s presidency (2000).

Head coach of the New Orleans Saints Sean Payton was second on the list and signed up in 2006, but withdrew this week so the rest of the field could catch up.

Mike Tomlin by the Pittsburgh Steelers was discontinued in 2007. McDermott’s former college teammate has never had a losing season at the helm.

Tomlin’s AFC North colleague John Harbaugh was hired a year later by the Baltimore Ravens. They only have one losing season under Harbaugh.

Things looked dicey for a second during the season, however Peter Caroll is still the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks and has been since 2010.

Andy Reid has been with the Kansas City Chiefs since 2013, but before that he was with the Philadelphia Eagles for a long time.

Next on the list is Reid’s protégé, Sean McDermott. He’s also the first person on the list without a Super Bowl win in their current head coaching job. (Sorry to bring that up, but the next two guys are also missing the Lombardi.) He’s the seventh-longest tenure head coach in the league, having beaten the Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay by a single day. Kyle Shanahan was hired a few weeks later after the Super Bowl to manage the San Francisco 49ers.
