SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) — After a three-night “sleep-in” inside San Francisco Unified School District offices, teachers demanding pay from the district said they reached an agreement with the district late Thursday.

On Monday, more than a dozen SFUSD educators began the sleep-in, calling for the district to pay more than 1,000 teachers and other staff members who have gone unpaid or only received partial paychecks since January.

The educators have said because of the payment issue, they’ve been unable to pay rent, mortgages, medical bills, and other necessities.

District officials have said that while the majority of its more than 10,000 employees have been paid correctly, a portion of educators went unpaid due to a technical error attributed to the district switching to a new payroll system, replacing an older system that had been in place for the last 17 years.

Under the agreement, the district will pay all educators owed money, as well as interest for the late payments.

Additionally, the district has promised to address any payroll errors moving forward within 72 hours. Also, the district will reimburse the affected educators for any late fees and penalties incurred.

“This occupation was the result of months and months of trying to negotiate with the district and trying to ask that folks get paid what they’re due,” said teacher and United Educators of San Francisco member Frank Lara said during a Thursday evening rally outside the district offices.

“It’s been exhausting for all of us,” he said.

“I cannot thank enough the families and the community partners who’ve come out and offered us their food, their support,” UESF president Cassondra Curiel said. “Your help and support got management to make moves and we know we’re on the same page. Now there will be less stress and people will be paid for the jobs that they’re doing.”

“We remain committed to ensuring every staff member receives all of the pay they are owed,” SFUSD Superintendent Vincent Matthews said in a statement. “I want to again extend my deepest apologies to every employee who has been impacted in any way as a result of our transition to a new payroll system.”

According to the district, the new agreement also ensures that all employees will be able to input COVID-19 sick leave, including any sick leave that COVID-19-related that has already been taken. Additionally, the district is also offering 10 additional COVID-19 sick days of leave for employees.

UESF officials are expected to hold a rally to celebrate the agreement on Friday at 5 pm at the SFUSD parking lot, located at 555 Franklin St.

The payment issues come as the district is dealing with other financial woes — a $125 projected budget shortfall — and considering laying off hundreds of teachers and other staff to balance the budget.

Also, on Friday, district officials announced enrollment preparations for the upcoming school year. So far, 14,127 families have submitted enrollment applications, slightly up from last school year when 13,917 families submitted applications.

SWEDESBORO, NJ other SAN FRANCISCO, Dec 2, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — In its second notable contract award over the past four weeks, Thomas Scientific has entered into a 5-year agreement with the City and County of san francisco as a strategic supplier of laboratory products and services.

The award was granted as the result of a formal bid solicitation by the City and County of san francisco. It allows for the provision of laboratory supplies to all relevant departments, both at the county and municipal level.

Thomas Scientific has inked a 5-year contract with the City and County of San Francisco to be a strategic supplier of laboratory products and services.

This latest deal comes on the heels of a similar five-year award with Florida State University in early November. Both contracts are a testament to Thomas Scientific’s focus on creating solutions that meet the unique needs of each customer – spearheaded by a cross-functional, company-wide team that includes key members of its sales, category, pricing, and finance departments.

“The City and County of san francisco was seeking to contract with a laboratory products distributor with the goal of establishing a ‘one-stop’ supplier for many different departments,” stated Lewis McMillan, Director, Government Sales at Thomas Scientific. “Our award extends the full product offering of Thomas Scientific to these government customers.”

The company has been building noticeable market momentum following four acquisitions under the Thomas Scientific umbrella during 2017-2018, including life science distributors Phenix Research Products and E&K Scientific. Since the integration of these four companies in 2019, Thomas Scientific has relied almost exclusively on in-house strategic initiatives and its strong capabilities to achieve accelerated growth, significantly outpacing its industry competitors.

Thomas Scientific now stands as North America’s largest pure-play distributor of scientific products, boasting the broadest and most differentiated product portfolio in the industry. This has greatly improved its ability to provide customers with access to the brands they trust the most in order to help accelerate their science.

In addition to continually adding to its industry-leading product portfolio, Thomas Scientific has significantly accelerated its investments within its clinical diagnostics, lab automation, and controlled environments teams. The company also made further operational strides by achieving ISO 9001:2015 certification this July and publicly launching Thomas Inventory Management Solutions (TIMS), its vendor-managed inventory program, the following month.

“Our Sales and Category Management teams have worked together to continually build-off of our industry leading product portfolio, attracting customers like the City and County of san francisco (and Florida State University). Thomas Scientific plays a very strategic and important role for our customers and suppliers by delivering significant value through our capabilities and expertise as North America’s largest pure-play distributor,” said Thomas Scientific’s Chief Operating Officer, Stan Haas. “We appreciate the confidence that our customer and supplier partners continue to have in Thomas, as we all pursue success together in serving science.”

Registered nurses at the San Francisco Chinese Hospital are proud to have reached a preliminary settlement on their first union agreement, the California Nurses Association / National Nurses United (CNA / NNU) announced today.

The three-year agreement with strong protection for patients and nurses follows the vote by Chinese hospital doctors in August 2019 to join the CNA / NNU and a strike for safe patient care in May this year. Nurses say they have been strong to win this incredible mandate and know it will benefit the community for years to come.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have this agreement and we know it will help us recruit and retain skilled nurses, especially the bilingual nurses that are so important to our patient population,” said Sherry Yee, medical- surgical nurse. “The nurses at the Chinese hospital stayed on course in our contract battle, and we are really proud to have won so many important safeguards that will help us deliver the safe patient care that the people in our community deserve.”

Contract highlights include:

Economic benefits for recruiting and retaining experienced nurses: The contract includes wage increases of at least 10% over three years and a grading on a pay scale that guarantees annual pay increases and tenure increases. RNs also received ratification bonuses. Nurses say the economic benefits will help skilled nurses stay in the Chinese hospital to care for patients in the community.

Nursing-led committees to empower patient advocacy and address staff, job security, and other issues that affect safe patient care conditions.

Improved Access to Paid Time Off (PTO): Chinese hospital nurses have sacrificed during the pandemic and many have not taken or postponed vacation, which will improve in the future. The new contract gives caregivers more flexibility to care for loved ones who may be away from work or school.

Fixed contribution limits for health insurance: Nurses were there every day during this pandemic to look after the patients and they deserve care in return. The new contract provides for free health care in 2022 and sets firm limits on contributions to health care in the future.

Job security and complaints procedure: The Chinese hospital can no longer discipline nurses without meeting the standard for the just cause. RNs now have an enforcement process to challenge breaches of contract and unjustified disciplinary action. In addition, the Chinese hospital must notify any operational changes.

Opportunities for improvement: Entry-level nurses will advance to Personal Nurse 2 without undue delays in accordance with area standards.

Nurses say these highlights and other key contract features will have a long-lasting positive impact on the community.

“Safe staffing is critical to safe patient care, and this agreement helps us attract and retain long-standing, experienced nurses. We couldn’t be more excited and proud to have won our very first union contract, and we know having strong written patient and care protection will make a huge difference, ”said Alson Toy, Surgery and Recovery Nurse.

Three major North American standards organizations, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Society of Sanitary Engineering (ASSE) and CSA Standards have an agreement to harmonize five standards on automatic equalizing valves, anti-siphon fill valves, trap seal primers, pressure flushing devices (flushometers ) and water temperature limiters. This harmonization agreement is intended to help bring clarity to the sanitary industry; especially to the manufacturers of devices that fall under the harmonized standards.

The agreement between the three organizations states that the purpose of the harmonized standards is to help U.S. and Canadian manufacturers by avoiding the duplication of effort in writing standards for the same products in different countries. This means that every product can be designed, manufactured and tested according to a common standard. This will help ensure consistent, high quality products, reduce costs (for manufacturers and consumers) and also help create a common basis for product comparisons.

The first harmonized standard for performance requirements for automatic equalizing valves for individual showers and bathtub / shower combinations is expected to be completed and ready for delivery this year.

Each of the harmonized ASME / ASSE / CSA standards will enable comparable testing of products for the US and Canadian markets. The harmonized standards have the ultimate goal of requiring compliance with a standard and a test, providing a fair assessment process for manufacturers and buyers in different countries, and helping to maintain or improve the current level of product performance. The harmonized standards will be maintained on an ongoing basis to take account of new technologies, regional or regulatory differences and, where practicable and possible, to move towards performance-based requirements and standards.

The signed harmonization agreement between CSA, ASME and ASSE came into force on December 1, 2009. The first efforts to develop common standards began in October 1991 when the CSA and ASSE signed a letter of intent. After several years of cooperation, a Joint Harmonization Task Group was formed in 2007 to meet the requirements of ASME A112.18.1-2005 / CSA B125.1-05, sanitary fittings, and ASSE 1016, Performance Requirements for Automatic Compensing Valves for Individual. to harmonize showers and bathtub / shower combinations. At these meetings it became clear that an agreement between CSA, ASME and ASSE would be needed to lay down the basic rules for harmonizing documents. Representatives of the three organizations met on April 22, 2009 to get the agreement in motion and to initiate the harmonization process that ultimately led to the joint agreement.

SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco Unified School District took a major step towards reopening schools on Saturday by signing a tentative agreement with a group of unions on health and safety standards for personal learning for students of all grades from preschool to high School has met.

The tentative agreement covers basic health and safety standards, including the return of students to classrooms when the city and county reach the red tier of California’s blueprint for a safer economy, like the California’s, according to district and union officials Ministry of Health and all employees returning to schools or workplaces “had the opportunity (authorization and access) to get vaccinated at the recommended dose,” a district announcement said.

Students could also return when the city and county hit orange or lower, “regardless of vaccine availability,” the district said.

“I would like to thank all of the district employees who have been working for months to get our schools ready so we can get back safely as soon as possible,” said District Manager Dr. Vincent Matthews in a statement. “This agreement would not have been possible without their efforts. I look forward to opening our school doors so more staff can start preparing to welcome the students back. “

Union leaders said a number of items included in the tentative agreement were proposed by workers in December, including helping the district to prioritize vaccines, availability and educate members; Masks and PPE for students and staff; socially distant classrooms and work areas; regular tests for students and staff; Health examinations; Ventilation upgrade and monitoring; a “safe and effective” cleaning protocol; and a contact trace and ladder diagram with the County Department of Public Health.

The availability of vaccine doses remains a problem.

“This agreement creates the conditions for the safe reopening of schools in San Francisco. Now we need city and state officials to reinforce school staff and provide vaccines while the UESF continues to focus on making classroom and timetable arrangements and distance learning for students and families who choose not to even return to keep improving with these standards, ”said Susan Solomon, president of United Educators of San Francisco.

Talks between the district and its unions began in September. The city announced on Wednesday that it would file a lawsuit to obtain a court order to instruct the district and the Board of Education to work out a plan to provide face-to-face learning as safely and as quickly as possible .

“After months of consistently at the table, we’ve known all along that the key to protecting our entire school community and reducing transmission in a school environment would require multiple layers of protection, and we’re confident that this agreement can be made to do exactly that, ”said Caroline Satoda, president of the United Administrators of San Francisco and supervisor in the district’s professional growth and development department.

“Skilled construction workers are ready to reopen learning centers safely and in the best possible conditions,” said Rudy Gonzalez, SF Building & Construction Trades. “We are still aware of the limitations due to underfunding, retention and staffing issues, but we see hope in this agreement. We look forward to receiving assistance from our federal, state, and local leaders in creating learning environments and facilities that are worthy of our students. “

The preliminary agreement “does not address or resolve any negotiable implications of the district’s hybrid teaching plan,” the SFUSD said. “The district continues to meet with the United Educators of San Francisco to finalize negotiations on the negotiable impact of hybrid education.”

Child killed in treadmill accident in Peloton when CEO warns parents

A child was killed in an accident using a peloton treadmill. The company boss warned parents to keep young children away from the equipment. Peloton has grown in popularity over the past year as more people turn to their home exercise products while giving up their gym memberships amid the pandemic. John Foley, Peloton’s co-founder and CEO, emailed the owners of the Tread + on March 18 to inform them of the incident. “I’m turning to you today because I recently learned of a tragic accident involving a child and the Tread + that resulted in an unthinkable death,” he wrote. “While we’ve only known a small handful of incidents involving the Tread + involving children, everyone in Peloton is devastating and our hearts go out to the families affected.” Mr. Foley advised users to keep pets and children away from Peloton devices and to keep them safe when not in use. The company said it would not release any further details, including the child’s age and location. The Tread +, which retails for around $ 4,256 (£ 3,000), is not currently available in the UK. However, a lighter, cheaper model is available. Peloton, whose stationary exercise bike has achieved cult status in recent years, launched the Peloton Tread in 2018 and presented the updated Tread + model last autumn. The Tread + has a lamellar belt that reduces the impact on the body, while the Tread has a more classic, full-length running belt. Tread + is one of a range of Pelotons treadmills and motorcycles that have a screen that allows users to watch exercise videos and virtual workouts. Peloton shares fell more than 3 percent in New York trading on Thursday. In the United States, around 25,000 children are injured with exercise machines each year, with an average of 2,600 children ending up in the emergency room due to treadmill accidents.
