On February 24 at San Francisco City Hall, software engineer Zsombor Szabo said “I do” to his now-wife, Mehrnaz. February 24 was also the day that Russia invaded Ukraine.

Little did the groom know that something he created years ago to help him find love, would later bring him to the city where he would meet the love of his life and be the way loved ones in war-torn Ukraine can connect.

“It started about four years ago,” explained Szabo. “At that time I was single and what does a single software developer do? He develops a dating app.”

PROVIDENCE, RI (WPRI) – Rhode Island has signed a contract with Salesforce.com to develop a mobile app that connects COVID-19 patients to services and helps public health officials track their contacts, locations and symptoms, according to a target 12 review of the deal.

The agreement with the San Francisco-based software company – entered into through a reseller company called Carahsoft Technology Corp. – Provides insight into how the state is trying to automate its current system of delivering services, scheduling tests, and finding people who may be contracting the disease from the infected, a response tactic known as “contact tracing” is.

“We’re taking a paper-based system and replacing it with a more efficient one,” wrote Health Ministry spokesman Joseph Wendelken in an email. “We have to do that because the response has become so great.”

Rhode Island began contact tracing for COVID-19 when the first positive case was announced on March 1st. As of Saturday, positive cases had grown to 2,349 and the number has been trending upward faster as testing became more widely available.

When someone tests positive for the disease, Ministry of Health officials collect information about those people’s travel history and who they’ve interacted with. After collecting the personal information, health authorities try to contact these contacts to determine if testing or quarantine is required.

The Salesforce agreement marks a major shift from the state’s personal strategy to an application-based program managed by a third-party vendor.

The app-based program is designed to make the process more efficient, but the idea of automating contact tracing using cell phones – a strategy already being used in other countries – has won over advocates of civil liberty, including Jennifer Sista Granick and Jay Stanley of the American Union for Civil Liberties.

“Policymakers need to have a realistic understanding of what the data generated by cell phones can and cannot do,” write Granick and Stanley in a white paper entitled “The Limits of Tracking in an Epidemic.”

“As always, there is a risk that a simplified understanding of how technology works can result in investments that are of little use or even counterproductive and invade privacy for no real benefit,” they added.

Salesforce has signed a six-month contract to set up and provide free support for the program and app. The estimated value of the work according to the contract is $ 280,486. And while Salesforce, the Department of Health, and the state IT team continue to sort out the details, the overall goal is relatively simple.

“The state of Rhode Island has hired Salesforce to support its COVID-19 response management activities and enable a nationwide system for ubiquitous testing, contact tracing and effective quarantine,” Salesforce representatives wrote in the contract. “The aim is to reduce infections by preventing exposed people from spreading COVID-19.”

Based on the contract, the app will provide public health officials with digital tools to monitor patient symptoms and track down contacts. The effort is made possible through interviews, gathering of contact information, and gathering of “related organizational and location information” as per the deal.

On the support side, the app will help people schedule tests and give people in quarantine and isolation access to services such as food delivery and telemedicine, Governor Gina Raimondo explained in one of her daily news stories last week.

The platform could also help public health officials predict the future spread of the disease and offer other analytical tools that could help better inform the state’s response efforts and future containment strategy. Based on current state-based modeling – which has not been publicly shared – the pandemic is unlikely to peak in Rhode Island until the end of the month at the earliest, according to Raimondo.

That means leaders are still very focused on responding to the disease, but the Salesforce deal shows Raimondo is starting to focus more on developing a containment strategy for the future. With no vaccination or approved treatment currently in place, leaders across the country are struggling to find a way to both protect the health of citizens and get them out of their homes and back to work.

“If I want to reopen this economy, it has to be more automated and scalable, so we’ve worked hard to build a system,” Raimondo said on Wednesday of contact tracing.

Rhode Island’s economy is on the brink, with COVID-19-related unemployment claims exceeding 135,000 since early March.

Harvard University economist Nicholas Mankiw, who chaired the Council of Economic Advisers under President George W. Bush, suggested that if the pandemic is somehow contained, employment could be restored. However, he cautioned that month-long closings would likely mean companies would close for good, which would result in fewer jobs for people looking to return to work.

“That decline could have a quick recovery,” Mankiw said last week during a discussion with Brown University President Christina Paxson. “That depends on how quickly the pandemic continues.”

Emerging strategies for opening up the economy without a vaccine or properly screened treatment include ubiquitous testing and retesting – along with some level of surveillance to help with contact tracing, quarantine, and isolation.

Harvard researchers suggest that an effective testing strategy would require retesting the entire population about every three to four days to control the disease, while another group said targeted contact tracing using technologies like Bluetooth might prove more efficient .

“There are strong arguments for using digital contact tracing in combination with other technological interventions to fight COVID-19, and there are reasons to believe that it does not require major privacy sacrifices for this technology to work,” the researchers wrote .

Other countries – including China, South Korea, Spain, and Thailand – have all implemented a mandatory and voluntary type of location tracking that has apparently worked with varying degrees of success.

Whether something similar could happen in Rhode Island in the future is not entirely clear, but leaders assure that any information that is ultimately collected will be protected by federal health care privacy laws that would also apply to Salesforce.

“The Salesforce platform is the channel,” said Wendelken. “There are confidentiality rules and requirements associated with this technology, just as there are when third parties process sensitive information or health information for the state.”

Bluetooth technology is currently not mentioned in the contract with Salesforce. And “GPS upload and automation” is outside the scope of duties that the company has taken on for the state. However, the contract makes it clear that such work can be carried out on request.

Chirag Patel, director of enterprise applications and IT for the state’s information technology division, leads development work for Rhode Island. He told The Providence Journal last week that GPS tracking is not currently part of the mission. Raimondo previously told reporters it was too early to tell. When asked for clarification, Raimondo spokesman Josh Block said both statements were true.

“Current planning does not include the use of GPS tracking technology,” Block wrote in an email. “But it is too early to say if we could look into this as this situation evolves.”

As I walk out of the Luke’s Local grocery chain in San Francisco on a Tuesday night, I feel an unexpected wave of guilt.

In my hand I am holding a heavy brown paper bag that is packed with eight products, a ham and goat cheese sandwich, a loaf of country bread with seeds, a fancy-looking almond cake, two chocolate sea salt biscuits and a packet of pita bread. Somehow I only paid $ 5.99 for this transportation which will feed me in various ways for at least a week.

The pound cake alone has a price sticker that says $ 13.99.

That day, the day I felt like I paid a small fee to rob a bank, I decided to have all of my meals (or at least my food for a 24 hour period) through the new Too Good app To Go, an anti-food waste company that helps bring excess food from restaurants and grocery stores to the general public for only $ 4.99 or $ 5.99 per “surprise bag”.

When I opened the app that morning, I had many San Francisco restaurants and grocery stores to choose from, including many that I would consider downright trendy, like Mamahuhu by Brandon Jew and Indie Superette by Michael Mina. I decided to pick a few that I knew well as I thought this would be my best choice for a well rounded day out based on what I knew the restaurant was in stock. I figured I’d get dinner from the House of Dim Sum, breakfast from Daily Driver, lunch prep from Luke’s Local, and a sweet treat and maybe a loaf of bread from La Boulangerie.

I was very, very wrong. As you can see, any facility can give a customer anything they want in a “surprise bag”. Sometimes the app might describe what’s likely in it (I’ve rarely seen this), but more often all you have to do is guess what they are for. But what I did wrong wasn’t necessarily the contents of the bag (obviously I expected and was right that Daily Driver would give me leftover bagels), but the amount of food in each bag.

While the customer is $ 4.99, each bag should be worth at least $ 15 (or a $ 5.99 bag should be worth $ 18), and each bag that I picked up had at least that and mostly a lot more. My plan for about three meals plus one dessert was actually subsidized meals for me and my husband all week long.

My loot from La Boulangerie included a banana and nut pound cake, a large chocolate chip cookie, a raspberry financier, and a baguette for $ 4.99.

Tessa McLean

At La Boulangerie Noe Valley, my bag contained a banana and nut pound cake, large chocolate chip cookie, raspberry financier, and a baguette for $ 4.99 – probably the most accurate of $ 15 I could get, when I added taxes according to my calculations.

When I pick up my dinner at the House of Dim Sum, I am greeted with a huge to-go container full of spring rolls, shrimp dumplings, pot stickers and Jian Dui, wrapped in such a way that I share it with my husband and there is enough for both dinners – everything for $ 5.99.

I ate Luke’s Local’s sandwich for lunch the next day and used the flatbread to gobble up some hummus that I had in the fridge. And for the rest of the week, I had breakfast – six Daily Driver bagels that typically cost $ 3.50 a bagel. Not to mention the peppers, onions, and garlic I used to complement a taco dinner later in the week, or the baguette pieces I used to soak up pasta sauce during another dinner and the lots of desserts that came from the various biscuits and this very tasty 13.99 pound cake.

Food waste is a major problem nationwide, but especially in the United States. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, up to 40% of our food is thrown away in this country. A 2014 study by the Food Waste Reduction Alliance found that 84.3% of unused food in American restaurants is disposed of and only 1.4% is donated.

Too Good To Go was born in Denmark and quickly spread to France, the UK, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands in 2016. Co-founder Lucie Basch said they knew the key to restaurant participation is to make the process as simple as possible, which makes the app easy to use and doesn’t require upfront commitments. There is no quota a restaurant has to meet so they can add food whenever they want and as often as they want.

The company charges a flat fee of $ 1.79 per purchase – which is pretty high when you convert it to a percentage (around 35% for a $ 4.99 bag) but pretty low when you Considering that most, if not all, of the foods the restaurant would have generated or no sales to save at all.

For Alexis Liu, owner of Beacon Coffee & Pantry, it’s a win-win for her small business in North Beach. Liu said that there is almost always food left at the end of the day, even if it’s just a bag of pastries, and she is glad that she no longer has to worry about it going to waste. She also said she believes it will introduce them to new customers who may not have visited the store but are now familiar with them and their products.

“Even if it’s just a bag that we sell and the actual amount that we receive [the app] is nominal, better than nothing and better than anything that ends up in a landfill, ”said Liu.

Basch said this is a great value proposition for restaurants, and while I didn’t think of it at first, I totally agree. I probably never would have bought the pitted loaf from Luke or that expensive pound cake, but now I might think twice about it if I ever go to the store again.

In addition to the Bay Area, Too Good To Go is currently available in New York, Boston, Jersey City, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Portland and Seattle. The aim is to add more restaurants in the Bay Area to the platform. The company hopes to launch in LA by the end of the year. The company estimates it has saved more than 72 million meals in 15 countries since its inception, adding up to £ 250 million in food.

Lucie Basch, one of the founders of Too Good To Go,

Courtesy Too Good To Go

Basch said she hopes restaurants and grocery stores can also learn from participating in the app. For example, if a restaurant sees there is always 10 baguettes left at the end of the day, maybe they could bake eight less each day and see if that helps their meal costs.

I promise this article is not sponsored by Too Good To Go, but I was really shocked and delighted with how much food each “surprise bag” contained and the quality of it. There doesn’t seem to be many downsides to consumers. Sure, I got a pear that was way too old to eat, but the bag of groceries was already way too expensive, so I didn’t feel bad composting a pear that would have ended up being composted in the store . Picking up items within a tight time limit can be a chore (the store schedules any time – you might only have a 15 minute window and up to several hours) but if you’re in a neighborhood that gets busy There are busy restaurants participating and you have a flexible schedule; it really isn’t that difficult.

The biggest barrier for many will likely be adhering to dietary restrictions. If you have an extreme allergy, Basch admits that the app is probably not for you as they can never guarantee what’s in a particular bag. They have a filter for vegetarian items but when I clicked that most of the restaurants disappeared from my app. But when I look back at my prey, only one out of four places contained items with meat.

If you’re on a budget, passionate about reducing food waste, and not a picky eater, this app could be exactly the win-win-win app it calls itself.

Issued on: 25/04/2021 – 05:38Modified: 25/04/2021 – 05:36

San Francisco (AFP)

An update to the software, which powers around one billion iPhones around the world, will be launched on Monday with an expanded data protection feature that critics fear will mess up the world of internet advertising.

Apple is asking app makers to let users know what tracking information they want to collect and get permission to do so. So-called “data protection nutrition labels” are displayed.

Apple’s move, which has been in the works for months, has sparked a major conflict with Facebook and other tech competitors and could have a significant impact on privacy and the mobile ecosystem.

Digital ads are the lifeblood of internet giants like Google and Facebook and are paid for for the cornucopia of free online content and services.

An update to the iOS software for iPhone, iPad and iPod devices introduces an “App Tracking Transparency Framework” that prevents apps from tracking users or accessing device identification information without permission.

“If you don’t get user permission to enable tracking, the device’s advertising identifier value will be all zeros and you may not be able to track it,” Apple said in an online message to developers this week.

According to Apple, the requirement, which some developers adopted early on, will apply to all iOS apps from Monday.

– ‘Change agent’ –

Eric Seufert, analyst and strategist at Mobile Dev Memo, said Apple’s new framework could “turn the app economy on its head” along with digital advertising in general, calling the new policy a “change agent”.

Seufert said in a blog post: “It is impossible to dismiss the fact that digital advertising on mobile devices is driven by what Apple defines as” tracking. “To explicitly remove this activity from the ecosystem, the operating model must change for mobile devices. “

With more than a billion iOS devices in active use worldwide, a change in the mobile operating system that could potentially affect the effectiveness of digital displays could be significant.

Platforms like Facebook or Google that rely on advertising are usually only paid when someone takes an action, e.g. B. Clicking on a marketing message.

Ads that are made irrelevant because less is known about users can mean fewer clicks and, in a broader sense, less revenue.

Mobile apps and the Internet in general have evolved with free information, games, directions, and more. Ads make money to keep data centers running and generate profits.

While some people using iPhones may give permission for tracking, marketers fear that many will opt for privacy.

During an earnings call earlier this year, Facebook warned that Apple’s change to the mobile operating system is likely to make it harder to target ads.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on the conference call that with its rival smartphone messaging service and tight access to the App Store, the only gateway to iPhones, Apple is becoming one of its company’s biggest competitors.

“Apple has every incentive to use its dominant platform position to interfere with the way our apps and other apps work, which they regularly do to favor their own,” Zuckerberg said.

“Apple might say they are doing this to help people, but the steps are clearly in their competitive interests.”

The social networking giant has argued that the iPhone maker’s new data collection and targeted advertising measures would hurt small businesses.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, defended the move, saying in a recent interview: “The principle is that the person should be in control of whether or not they are being tracked. Who has their data?”

Apps can still show “contextual ads” based on user activity during the sessions and keep the insights to themselves.

Advances in artificial intelligence and data analysis should help platforms, and thus advertisers, to use less data about users, said Creative Strategies analyst Carolina Milanesi.

“Advertisers still need to be relevant to people without chasing them. That’s good for the consumer and good for the brands,” said Milanesi.

“I think Apple is right. Transparency is always something we should strive for.”

We’ll start it with LeBron James. Let’s see how the world’s most famous basketball player behaves in this app.

TaskRabbit, the San Francisco-based handyman app, is expanding to Nashville Thursday, adding to the city’s rapidly growing on-demand services.

Customers use the app to hire individuals known as “taskers” to help them with everyday tasks – assembling furniture, hanging pictures, putting up a television, etc. The company operates in 24 cities and has 60,000 Employees who perform tasks.

“Today, middle-class families who are working parents, both outside the home or both working in some way, just can’t get through all of the things on their to-do lists,” said Stacy Brown-Philpot, CEO of TaskRabbit. “We’re going to help you resolve this pain point by helping you remove some of these things from your to-do list.”

The TaskRabbit business model helps Taskers supplement income when wages in full-time and part-time jobs are inadequate, Brown-Philpot said. The average hourly income for Tasker is $ 35. She points out that it is more than four times the federal minimum wage.

More:Nashville freelancers access the gig economy with the moonlighting service

TaskRabbit customers download the app, select the task they want to do, and choose a Tasker who will respond within 30 minutes. The Tasker tells a customer when to come by based on customer preferences and sets the rate. All tasks are insured, and TaskRabbit does background checks for its Taskers.

TaskRabbit is moving to local Takl, which started in the on-demand craft niche in Nashville last year. Founded by Willis Johnson, a Frankliner, the company expanded to 700 cities and was powered by a high-visibility advertising campaign.

Takl has 2,000 employees providing craft services in the Nashville area, with house cleaning, gardening, and garbage disposal among the most popular services, according to the company.

“The peer-to-peer economy is revolutionizing the way people get things done,” said Johnson. “We have launched the Takl app in hundreds of cities and look forward to expanding our product across America.”

Beyond housework, the on-demand model has caught on with workers and customers in Nashville looking for grocery delivery, meal delivery, transportation, haircut, and fuel, among other things. Employees will aggregate their incomes through multiple apps or take up jobs as they please in their spare time.
