Porchlight Music Theater began its ninth season of Chicago’s “lost” musicals series with Porchlight Revisites The Apple Tree, book and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, book and music by Jerry Bock with additional material by James Coopersmith.

Each of the three musical stories in The Apple Tree is directed by a different person, Frankie Leo Bennett+ (The Diary of Adam and Eve), Jamal Howard+ (The Lady or the Tiger?), and Laura Savage* (Passionella) with musical direction by David Fiorello+.

Porchlight Revisits The Apple Tree was presented for three performances only Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 7:30 pm and Thursday, Dec. 8 at 1:30 pm and 7:30 pm at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts, 1016 N. Dearborn Street. Three-show discounted Porchlight Revisits subscriptions are available and single tickets to Porchlight Revisits

Now in its ninth season, Porchlight Revisits celebrates the rarely seen musical gems of Broadway, off-Broadway and beyond and is the ticket to go behind the scenes with an introduction to the luminaries who created the greatest musicals of all time and an opportunity to discover a new ‘old’ favorite all in one big show.

Chicago’s finest music theater talents dust off these treasures and escort audiences into the world of the art of music theater’s past for a limited run. In addition to productions from days gone by, each Porchlight Revisits includes the Behind the Show Backstory, an entertaining and informative multimedia presentation, created and hosted by Artistic Director Michael Weber+, introducing the evening’s production including the show’s creative history, juicy backstage stories and much more.

The 2022 – 2023 Porchlight Revisits season begins with The Apple Tree from the songwriting team behind Fiddler on the Roof and She Loves Me. This witty, tuneful and charming piece that was Tony nominated for Best Musical is made up of three miniatures: The Diary of Adam and Eve, a quirky, touching spin on the tale of the world’s first couple, adapted from Mark Twain’s short stories; The Lady or the Tiger?, a 1960’s rock and roll fable set in a mythical kingdom, which explores the fickleness of love and Passionella based on Jules Feiffer’s offbeat Cinderella story about a chimney sweep who dreams of being a “glamorous movie star.”

Porchlight Revisits Two by Two tells the story of Noah, the flood and its aftermath with touches of modern themes including the environment and the differences from generation to generation.

The cast of Porchlight Revisits The Apple Tree includes Jonah Cochin+ (Adam/ensemble); Maddison Denault* (Princess Barbara/ensemble); Susan Hofflander* (Snake/ensemble); Shea Hopkins+ (Flip/The Prince/ensemble); Ruchir Khazanchi+ (Captain Sanjar/ensemble); Michael Mejia^ (balladeer/ensemble); Leah Morrow* (Ella/Passionella/Ensemble); Emma Rosenthal* (Narrator/ensemble) and Ciarra Stroud* (Eve/ensemble).

Porchlight Music Theater invited audiences to take another bite of musical theater history with Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick’s THE APPLE TREE. The musical, composed of three one-acts centered on the theme of temptation, was the season opener for the Porchlight Revisits series. As usual, Porchight Artistic Director Michael Weber introduced the show with a brief educational talk on THE APPLE TREE’s history.

THE APPLE TREE features a deft ensemble of nine actors, all who play various roles in each of the show’s three acts. While the original production featured the same leads across all three pieces, Porchlight’s production puts different actors (and directors) front and center for each. It’s a concept that works well, allowing the actors to take the lead in the roles most suited to their talents. Frankie Leo Bennett directs THE DIARY OF ADAM AND EVE; while it’s no fault of Benett’s, this is the most unoriginal and creaky of the three acts in THE APPLE TREE. It’s a rather traditional play on the origin story of Adam and Eve, and of course, the infamous Snake that tempts Eve to eat the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. While Jonah Cochin, Ciarra Stroud, and Susan Hofflander bring out the quirks in Bock and Harnick’s particular versions of Adam, Eve, and Snake, THE DIARY OF ADAM AND EVE meanders. It’s also hard not to look at the gender roles in this one act as mostly dated and uninteresting. In some moments, the one act seems ahead of its time, as when Stroud’s Eve is forced to laugh when Cochin’s Adam claims he has invented humor and tells her an extremely unfunny joke-ah, the origins of women laughing at men’s jokes just to get through the day. Outside of moments like that, though, Bock and Harnick present a rather tired portrait of Adam as strong and adventurous, while Eve is a mother figure and caretaker. The music for this act is pretty, and Stroud has a lovely, soaring tone, but it’s also not as distinctive as the score for the other two acts.

After departing the Garden of Eden, we arrive at THE LADY OR THE TIGER?, directed and choreographed by Jamal Howard. Musically, Bock and Harnick have given THE LADY OR THE TIGER? a more specific style-musical theater aficionados will recognize the narrative stylings of Balladeer (Michael Mejia), who brings audiences into the show at the act’s start. He queues up the story of the mighty King Arik (Hofflander, again displaying her comedic chops), who finds it just to have prisoners stand trial by standing before two doors. Behind one door, there’s a tiger, who will devour the prisoner. Behind the other, there’s a maiden from among the populace in the royal court-the prisoner will be freed but must marry her immediately. Of course, Princess Barbara has fallen for a commoner, Captain Sanjar (Ruchir Khazanchi). When King Arik discovers their forbidden love, he makes Sanjar stand the ultimate test. Wanting to save her lover’s life, Princess Barbara finds out which door will be which at Sanjar’s trial. But when she learns that a beautiful woman in court will stand behind one of the doors, she must decide if she wants to be selfish or selfless for her love.

THE LADY OR THE TIGER? is a fantastic comedic vehicle for Maddison Denault as Princess Barbara. She delivers the act’s comedic power ballads with verve. While Khazanchi’s presence isn’t quite as formidable, he’s a great scene partner for Denault. This is also a much more concise and lively one act as written than the previous one, and Howard’s direction and choreography keep it moving along at a brisk pace.

THE APPLE TREE concludes with PASSIONELLA, a riff on the classic Cinderella story centered on Ella-a poor chimney sweep who dreams of becoming a Hollywood movie star. Directed and choreographed by Laura Savage, THE APPLE TREE saves the best for last. PASSIONELLA is a delightful and exaggerated satire with jazz influences in the score. And in Leah Morrow, Porchlight has cast a total star in the dual roles of Ella/Passionella. Morrow seems born to play this part; she’s an outsized comedic actor who also maintains the absolute truth of her character-and she’s also one of the strongest singers in the ensemble. Morrow also plays terrifically off Emma Rosenthal in the role of the Narrator and Fairy Godmother. Rosenthal taps into the Narrator’s dry sense of humor, and her more understated presence is a great contrast to Morrow’s overly dramatic Ella. Of the three acts in THE APPLE TREE, PASSIONELLA as written has the strongest sense of style, place, and narrative; it’s fitting that Bock and Harnick would end with the act tied most specifically to the moment in which they wrote the show.

Because certain elements are dated and others are tied specifically to the 1960s, it makes complete sense that Porchlight Revisits would showcase THE APPLE TREE-it’s not a musical that’s likely to be revived any time soon. It displays Bock and Harnick’s talents as a composer/lyricist team, though, and the intelligence of using the theme of temptation-and the powerful notion that getting everything you ever wanted rarely looks like how you think it will-into each of the three acts .

While I didn’t care much for the material in THE DIARY OF ADAM AND EVE, I also deeply appreciate that Bock and Harnick pulled temptation and longing into the other acts as the narrative thread-rather than making this a musical all about Bible stories. That’s a much more interesting, universal, and human idea, and it justifies THE APPLE TREE’s spot in the Porchlight Revisits series.

Editor’s Note: Welcome to screenshots where senior tech reporter Jeff Elder covers the come and go of SF’s biggest industry. Stay tuned as we keep track of all things tech.

Stanford’s Hoover Institution incorrectly reported that Apple moved its headquarters to Austin two weeks ago in a report. That was news for Apple. In the report, a company spokeswoman said, “This listing is inaccurate.” The institution is only 14 miles up I-280 from Apple’s world-famous 180 acre headquarters in Cupertino, and the Stanford Libraries contain 40 archival collections about the company. But the researchers, Hoover fellows Lee Ohanian and Joseph Vranich, used the Austin Chamber of Commerce as their source. Why? One explanation could be in the report’s first footnote, which subtly mentions that the lead author, Vranich, who billed himself as “The moving coach” runs a company that helps companies move from California to Texas. “Liberal cities are a mess – let us help you move to a conservative community,” read a page on Vranich’s website. He has written articles like “Confucius Would Push Chinese Companies To Avoid California” …

Well, that’s good news for The City’s tech startups – and those spooky tech campuses. In his report to the Supes this week, Ted Egan, City Hall’s top economist, said venture capital investments in SF are at an all-time high. And some startups may use that money to rent offices on large tech campuses. Egan said San Francisco is the nationwide leader in office sublet subletting – and commercial rents are falling. “Big tech companies that want to grow fast are making room in the market,” said Egan. “Little ones lease it back.” But he warned: “We still have a big gap between supply and demand” …

Seems like every tech reporter on the bay is covering the big things Theranos Legal proceedings – and even foreign media cannot get enough. I got two breathless emails from a major UK radio station asking if I could do a spot in the process this morning. That made my eyes wider than Elizabeth Holmes’, considering I can’t remember ever writing about the disgraced medical research company. However, I can tell you my favorite tweet so far about the process: “ELIZABETH HOLMES OFFERS TO TAKE A NEW THERANOS LIE DETECTOR TEST TO PROVE INNOCENCE” by Onion-y @ hardmoneymag …

Waymo attracted a lot on Thursday evening Exploratorium after dark Event (now 700-900 geeky partygoers!) With a virtual reality display that shows the self-driving jaguars cruising through the western part of the city. Waymo employs around 2,000 people, some in an office in Potrero Hill, where they work on the San Francisco challenges for Jaguar’s white electric I-PACE models. Such as? The smart cars are amazed at these party buses that look like cable cars because they are not where cable cars should be. And fog, of course. The sensors that tell the cars what is nearby sometimes have a hard time pinching everything when Karla the Fog rolls hard …

Yes, I said Karla. The famous KarlTheFog Twitter account has been quiet for more than a year and a half, but its up and coming sister account @KarlaTheFog has caught up with the slack – if not all of its followers …

New hardware for remote work from a Bay Area company: Palo Alto networks – The World’s Highest Paid Cyber Security Company – just announced Okyo guard Remote worker hardware that creates a private Wi-Fi network separate from their home network to protect workers from hackers and keep them connected quickly. the Alexa– looking hardware costs around $ 150 and will be released this fall …

Palo Alto Networks launches a home device that makes remote workers’ WiFi safer and faster. (Courtesy Palo Alto Networks)

In this week Google announced plans to replenish 120% of the company’s total water use by 2030 and invest in three projects in the Bay Area. And did you know? Kate Brandt, Google’s Chief Sustainability Officer who announced the campaign, received the Distinguished Public Service Award, the highest distinction the Navy can bestow on a civilian for helping the Navy go green …

Later that month the giant Japanese company NTT will open a huge research facility in Sunnyvale where researchers are working on digital twins of people’s hearts. An identical version of your heart that lives on a screen that doctors can experiment on to see how your real heart can be better cared for. And you thought digitally heart was your CD from “Dreamboat Annie”. Watch out or I’ll go crazy for you. I am a wizard…

OK, OK, let’s mention some digital music from this century. Talented local writer Benjamin Schneider says SF rapper Stunnaman02 is the real deal, and the video for “I Know” that he posted on YouTube two weeks ago is really good for my untrained eyes and ears. My SF Media colleague Schneider is a real expert and he says: “Stunnaman is definitely the real deal. Certainly the greatest local artist of 2021. “Believe him, not me …

CONTINUE READING: COVID: Santa Rosa Junior College encourages students to stay enrolled during pandemic

Green flyers were posted informing camp residents that the site would begin closing at 7 a.m. on September 2. The flyers warned that any remaining materials would be removed. Valuables would be stored for 90 days, the rest will be transported to the landfill.

Crews worked much of the day, using bulldozers to scrape the debris into large trash cans and throw up noxious clouds of dust that reeked of human waste and raw sewage.

On August 13, Apple announced a partnership with HomeFirst and said the company would give the nonprofit “several million dollars” to clean up the website and provide shelter for the more than 60 people in the camp.

The residents were offered three types of interim accommodation: a motel room, an emergency bed or a secure parking space. Apple would cover the costs for the case for nine months and the case management for twelve months.

HomeFirst CEO Andrea Urton described Apple’s offer as “generous” and referred to recent major donations from local technology giants. Google and Facebook have donated $ 1 billion, and Apple has pledged $ 2.5 billion to build affordable housing and fund homeless initiatives.

“I don’t think American companies are doing enough. I think there are good people in America. I meet a lot of them every day. And yet I think companies could lean more to be part of the solution. And that means providing resources, financial resources, be it land, whether it’s working with developers to build affordable housing for their employees. Whatever it is, they have to be part of the solution with the city and county, ”said Urton.

She pointed out that funding from the private sector is needed as local government agencies are under budgeted.

CONTINUE READING: Drought Emergency: Arid conditions sending wildlife to the East Bay neighborhoods

“The city and the district are currently doing everything they can, and have been doing so for two years. They are underserved and tired, just like all of us. So if big corporations step in and provide the resources that nonprofits need to be part of the solution, together we can actually end homelessness effectively, ”said Urton.

HomeFirst response teams had offered accommodation to Robert Carlson, who has been on site for several months. But with several large vehicles including an RV, Carlson declined the housing and chose to go solo.

“It’s part of life, isn’t it? Trials and trials, man, ”Carlson said. “Well, we were all one big family here. We were a big family. I already miss everyone. “

Deborah Kempkoble, who has also lived on the premises for several months, accepted the offer for a motel room on the Monterey Highway and said her story “may have a happy ending”.

“You will help me get teeth. Because I don’t have any, do you understand? They will help me get teeth, ”said Kempkoble. “It’s easier to find a job when you have teeth.”

The new construction of a 2.70 meter high black metal fence now surrounds part of the property, which is guarded by a sizeable contingent of Apple’s private security guards.

Regarding Thursday’s cleanup, Apple referred to an earlier statement posted in August:

“Apple has long been focused on tackling the housing crisis across California and working with partners to support communities at risk and provide new affordable units. As the challenges for tenants and potential homeowners continue to increase, we have accelerated our support and have already allocated over $ 1 billion to new projects since early 2020. In San Jose we have been working closely with local partners for several months to identify alternative housing options and to support families who will leave the Component Drive location. We are contracting with HomeFirst – a leading local provider of services, accommodation and accommodation – to provide resources directly to ensure that those currently on that location have access to a range of accommodation, Have resources for casework and other support services. “

SAN JOSE (KPIX) – Less than four weeks before the city of San Jose is due to present its plans to clean up hundreds of homeless camps near Mineta San Jose Airport, some airport residents have begun moving to even larger premises nearby. owned by Apple.

“Everyone knows there are homeless people out there, they just don’t want to look at them, I think,” said Lynn Shipman, who now lives on the sprawling Apple property in north San Jose.

CONTINUE READING: Neighbors express frustration at the homeless camp next to Mineta San Jose International Airport

Airport officials have until July 31 to notify the FAA of their plan to remove the camps that have been set up on 40 acres of land directly in the trajectory of the jets on their final approach to the runway. The city said there were up to 200 people, but official figures put the number between 400 and 500. The FAA has threatened to withhold millions of dollars in funding if the city fails to do so.

When the city began “cleaning up” the airport last week, some residents began moving from the airport to the Apple property about 3 miles away. Apple-owned lots bounded by Trimble Road, Orchard Parkway, Component Drive, North 1st Street, Charcot Avenue, and Highway 101 total approximately 55 acres.

According to Shipman, there are at least 30 people in the Apple camps, many with huge amounts of junk, rubble, RVs, tents and vehicles.

“And Apple, they’re not doing anything with this country at the moment. Why don’t you let the people stay until they do? ”Said Schiffsmann.

Robert Carlson, who also lives at the Apple warehouse, says “haters” who come to the site and start fires and destroy property are “shunned”. Carlson is reluctant to move into low-income homes as property storage is restricted.

CONTINUE READING: FAA raises concerns about sprawling homeless camps near San Jose Airport

“The problem is, you can’t bring anything. Most of the time you can’t bring anything with you. Cars clothes and that’s it. Lots of own mobile homes and everything else. It takes a long time to get an RV. And if we do, we don’t want to give it up, ”said Carlson.

Carlson, who spends his days collecting recycle for income, thought that Apple, the world’s most valuable company, owns the land.

“Tell you what, if you are such a wealthy company, you could help us all make this place better. Instead of trying to get us out of here when the company is this big, show that they care, ”said Carlson.

Local activist Shaunn Cartwright made no comment on the Apple warehouse, but said empty packages like the former Orchard Supply Hardware store on Bird Avenue are examples of how technology companies can alleviate the homelessness crisis.

“There is no plausible defense of sitting there and saying ‘I am going to leave this land empty’ and not acting as a good neighbor and providing safe parking spaces for these people in dire need. We need technology to be a good neighbor, we need it to enable safe parking on this land for a year or two before homes are built for these people, ”said Cartwright.

KPIX asked Apple for a comment. A representative said the company was formulating an answer.

Issued on: 25/04/2021 – 05:38Modified: 25/04/2021 – 05:36

San Francisco (AFP)

An update to the software, which powers around one billion iPhones around the world, will be launched on Monday with an expanded data protection feature that critics fear will mess up the world of internet advertising.

Apple is asking app makers to let users know what tracking information they want to collect and get permission to do so. So-called “data protection nutrition labels” are displayed.

Apple’s move, which has been in the works for months, has sparked a major conflict with Facebook and other tech competitors and could have a significant impact on privacy and the mobile ecosystem.

Digital ads are the lifeblood of internet giants like Google and Facebook and are paid for for the cornucopia of free online content and services.

An update to the iOS software for iPhone, iPad and iPod devices introduces an “App Tracking Transparency Framework” that prevents apps from tracking users or accessing device identification information without permission.

“If you don’t get user permission to enable tracking, the device’s advertising identifier value will be all zeros and you may not be able to track it,” Apple said in an online message to developers this week.

According to Apple, the requirement, which some developers adopted early on, will apply to all iOS apps from Monday.

– ‘Change agent’ –

Eric Seufert, analyst and strategist at Mobile Dev Memo, said Apple’s new framework could “turn the app economy on its head” along with digital advertising in general, calling the new policy a “change agent”.

Seufert said in a blog post: “It is impossible to dismiss the fact that digital advertising on mobile devices is driven by what Apple defines as” tracking. “To explicitly remove this activity from the ecosystem, the operating model must change for mobile devices. “

With more than a billion iOS devices in active use worldwide, a change in the mobile operating system that could potentially affect the effectiveness of digital displays could be significant.

Platforms like Facebook or Google that rely on advertising are usually only paid when someone takes an action, e.g. B. Clicking on a marketing message.

Ads that are made irrelevant because less is known about users can mean fewer clicks and, in a broader sense, less revenue.

Mobile apps and the Internet in general have evolved with free information, games, directions, and more. Ads make money to keep data centers running and generate profits.

While some people using iPhones may give permission for tracking, marketers fear that many will opt for privacy.

During an earnings call earlier this year, Facebook warned that Apple’s change to the mobile operating system is likely to make it harder to target ads.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on the conference call that with its rival smartphone messaging service and tight access to the App Store, the only gateway to iPhones, Apple is becoming one of its company’s biggest competitors.

“Apple has every incentive to use its dominant platform position to interfere with the way our apps and other apps work, which they regularly do to favor their own,” Zuckerberg said.

“Apple might say they are doing this to help people, but the steps are clearly in their competitive interests.”

The social networking giant has argued that the iPhone maker’s new data collection and targeted advertising measures would hurt small businesses.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, defended the move, saying in a recent interview: “The principle is that the person should be in control of whether or not they are being tracked. Who has their data?”

Apps can still show “contextual ads” based on user activity during the sessions and keep the insights to themselves.

Advances in artificial intelligence and data analysis should help platforms, and thus advertisers, to use less data about users, said Creative Strategies analyst Carolina Milanesi.

“Advertisers still need to be relevant to people without chasing them. That’s good for the consumer and good for the brands,” said Milanesi.

“I think Apple is right. Transparency is always something we should strive for.”

The Clipper Card can be added to Apple Pay and used with Express Transit features on San Francisco Bay.

The Apple Wallet on the iPhone has support for adding certain transit cards from within the app. These cards can be used in Express Transit mode and reloaded with Apple Pay.

The last card to be added is the clipper card. It is the San Francisco Bay Area transit card of choice and can be used with all 24 transit agencies in the area.

San Francisco is also one of the cities with enhanced transit instructions, so users can find real-time schedules for a bus, train, or ferry that are compatible with the Clipper Card. Just hold your iPhone or Apple Watch near a Clipper reader and you’re done.

Express Transit Mode is a feature that allows users to assign an Apple Pay card for use without authentication. It is necessary to pass through busy areas like a turnstile without having to pause and authenticate the transaction.

Cards used in Express mode are also available up to five hours after the iPhone battery is discharged. This means that the user can use transit services even if the device’s battery is empty.

The Clipper card connects the TAP card and the SmarTrip card in Apple Wallet. Apple maintains a list of all transit cards available for Express Transit mode by region.
