SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) – While the fire continues in Caldor, near South Lake Tahoe, two evacuees were killed in San Francisco on Labor Day Weekend.

“At least 700 photos of my father. My husband had a lot of fishing gear, camping gear in there. A guitar that had belonged to my other grandfather. A table that had belonged to my grandfather,” said Jadeen Young.

Young of South Lake Tahoe describes some of the items that were stolen from her husband’s Toyota Tacoma truck in San Francisco late Sunday evening or early Monday morning.

RELATED: Evacuations lifted as wildfire for thousands in Tahoe

A vehicle break-in in San Francisco may not surprise you, but Young and her husband are South Lake firefighters who have stayed in town and have not been able to go home for the past ten days.

“It was really eye-catching for a minute, the fire came up to 300 meters from our house,” says Young.

VIDEO: CAL FIRE explains why Caldor Fire moves so fast and sometimes jumps for miles

She says her South Lake Tahoe neighborhood was saved by firefighters and they are forever grateful.

Unfortunately, Young shared a few digital pictures showing her and her late father, who passed away earlier this year. The originals she tried to save from the fire were stolen from the couple’s truck that Labor Day weekend, which was parked in the Pierce Street garage in San Francisco’s Marina District – a location near their hotel.

When we spoke to Young Monday she was close to tears: “There is the photo of him holding me in the hospital for the first time, when I was born, and all these firsts in my life and some of my first memories became Captured in these photos and it was really heartbreaking to see that someone had taken them. “

Young says everything was locked and off the premises when they got off the truck at 11 p.m. Sunday night. The metal cover on the back of this truck can hold up to 500 pounds, but it appears that someone broke the lock. Car thefts are up 19 percent year over year, and this section of the marina has seen dozens of cases recently, according to the latest police data from July.

Young says she hopes the thief will have a change of mind and returns the pictures.

“They are the only photos I had of my father. To see that they were gone, it was the greatest success.”

We asked the police for a comment, but received only out-of-office messages due to the Labor Day holiday.

EL DORADO NATIONAL FOREST (CBS SF) – The Caldor Fire, burning in the Sierra Nevada, has become the country’s top fire fighting priority, and the chief of Cal Fire acknowledged the potential threat to the Lake Tahoe area on Monday afternoon.

The wildfire has burned 106,562 acres, or nearly 170 square miles, in the El Dorado National Forest since it began east of Omo Ranch and south of Grizzly Flats parish on Aug. 14. A five percent containment was reported on Monday.

CONTINUE READING: Health officials hope the FDA’s full approval of the Pfizer COVID vaccine will convince the holdouts

Cal-Fire Thom Porter told reporters at a news conference Monday that Caldor Fire is a top priority in fire-fighting resource allocation because of its proximity to Tahoe.

“It’s so important,” he said. “There is a knock on the door to the Lake Tahoe Basin. We have made every effort to keep it out of the pool, but we also need to be aware that it is possible because of the way the fires burned. “

After a week of no containment, fire officials reported five percent containment on Monday, and further containment is expected later in the day, particularly along the south edge of the fire.

At a press conference for the California governor’s Office of Emergency Services Monday afternoon, officials announced that two Galt police officers were seriously injured in a head-on collision on Highway 99 early Sunday morning while trying to help in the Caldor Fire. Two other civilians were injured in the fire last week.

As of Monday, at least 403 homes had been destroyed by the fire and more than 17,000 homes and other buildings were threatened. Six commercial properties were destroyed along with 148 other smaller structures, Cal Fire said. The cause has not yet been clarified.

Downhill winds, low temperatures, and moderate overnight humidity helped slow the fire from spreading.

Operations chief Tim Ernst said Monday the toughest area of the fire continues to be around where it originated, with the flames continuing to storm towards Grizzly Flats, where dozens of homes were burned in the wildfire last week.

“To solve this problem, we are installing a lot of emergency lines and bulldozers, and last night we did a long fire operation to remove some of the fuel from the fire,” said Ernst. “But the fire continues to challenge us in this area.”

After jumping on US Highway 50 over the weekend, Ernst said there was no extensive fire growth past Highway 50 overnight and the crews on the northern edge of the fire were busy with extensive building defense and preparation.

On the western edge, a significant amount of work has been done around the Jenkinson Reservoir and Sly Park area to connect the existing fire lines, Ernst said. The eastern tip of the fire continues to be a challenge, as daily winds from the southwest push the fire in an easterly direction.

GRIZZLY FLATS, El Dorado County (CBS SF) – New evacuations were ordered in El Dorado County ahead of the Caldor Fire exploding in the Sierra Nevada on Tuesday, which has already destroyed dozens of homes and threatened hundreds more structures, firefighters said.

Portions of Pollock Pines, a community well known to Bay Area travelers traveling to the Lake Tahoe area along US Highway 50, were evacuated from wildfire Tuesday afternoon.

The fire burned at least 6,500 acres without containment after igniting in the Cosumnes River Canyon area of the El Dorado National Forest. Access to the fire is extremely difficult due to the steep, rugged terrain, according to the US Forest Service.

A Cal Fire battalion chief said at least 50 homes had been burned down in the Grizzly Flats area as gusty winds drove embers into homes with defensive space.

Cal Fire also confirmed that two civilians were found who were seriously injured in the fire.

One of the fire victims reportedly turned to the fire department in the Grizzly Flats area on Tuesday morning. These firefighters initially provided initial medical care, but the fire victim was then taken to hospital by rescue aircraft for treatment of serious injuries.

The second person was also found in the Grizzly Flats area and was also transported by ambulance to a hospital for treatment. The authorities did not provide any further information about the fire victims, who were also seriously injured and required an airlift.

The actual number of buildings destroyed and damaged was not known until 1:35 p.m. as the fire conditions were not yet certain to allow assessment teams to be consulted. Fire officials said the Caldor fire was a rapidly changing incident with dynamic fire behavior and posed a high risk to several inhabited communities.

The El Dorado County Sheriff has ordered the following evacuations:

Pollack pines

Cal Fire said Tuesday morning that at least 800 buildings are currently at risk, including apartment buildings and outbuildings. There are also threats to businesses, commercial forests, vineyards, and other agricultural land.

Firefighters have been working on establishing indirect control lines on the eastern flank of the fire, while, according to the forest service, an emergency line was planned north of the fire. Fire officials said crews were challenged by staff shortages and other fire incidents in the state.

A red flag warning was in effect in the region until 8 a.m. on Wednesday. The hot and dry weather over the fire was expected to continue earlier this week and the winds will continue to pick up as the week progresses.

A power outage map from Pacific Gas and Electric showed that more than 1,100 customers in the area were without power as of Tuesday afternoon.

CALDOR FIRE: Information on incidents, evacuations, maps

The wildfire began on Saturday night about six kilometers south of Grizzly Flats and about three kilometers east of Omo Ranch. The cause of the fire was still the subject of the investigation.

A local evacuate, Will Berndt, said the fire broke out in an area where a group camped along Dogtown Creek. Another witness told Berndt that two people with scorched clothing left the premises to alert others to a fire and to leave the area.

“It wasn’t a big fire, so I thought they might find someone to react to it,” said Berndt. “Nothing has happened.”

Berndt said around 9 a.m. Sunday morning he had returned to the area to take a look and the fire had spread across the Middle Fork Consumnes River towards Omo Ranch and ran along the canyon rim. At around 11:30 a.m., Berndt said firefighters were using air tankers to fight the fire.

Berndt said that in the decades he lived in the area, he never had to evacuate from wildfire.

“We talked about it, we’ve been up here for 43 years and we talked about it, so what if the mountain burns, what are we going to do?” Said Berndt. “It’s like, well, you just take what you can and get out of here. It’s one of those thoughts that you see on TV, you see that other communities have to deal with it, and you say, ‘Well, that sucks.’ But you never think we’re standing in the way of a smelly firestorm. “

GRIZZLY FLATS, El Dorado County (CBS SF) – The Caldor Fire, which burns in the Sierra east of Sacramento in El Dorado County, exploded overnight Tuesday, burning dozens of homes and threatening hundreds more, authorities said.

By Tuesday morning, the wildfire had burned more than 6,500 acres without containment in the Cosumnes River Canyon area of the El Dorado National Forest. Access to the fire is extremely difficult due to the steep, rugged terrain, according to the US Forest Service. Fire officials said the wildfire was a rapidly changing incident with dynamic fire behavior.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office has ordered evacuations for Grizzly Flats and the surrounding areas including Leoni Meadows, Saw Town Creek, Caldor area including North South Road, Dogtown Creek south of Caldor Road, Barney Ridge east of Omo Ranch Road, Omo Ranch Road to North South Road, Caldor area including North South Road and Pi’Pi Valley to Armsrong Hill.

CALDOR FIRE: Information on incidents, evacuations, maps

Houses were burned down in Forest View Drive and Grizzly Flats Road. A Cal Fire battalion chief said he believed at least 50 homes were lost to the wildfire as gusty winds drove embers into homes with defensive space.

There are reportedly at least 200 houses in the area, and Cal Fire says more than 800 buildings are currently at risk.

A power outage map from Pacific Gas and Electric showed that more than 1,000 customers in the area were without power as of Tuesday morning.

The wildfire began on Saturday night about six kilometers south of Grizzly Flats and about three kilometers east of Omo Ranch. The cause of the fire was still the subject of the investigation.
