Metro Atlanta residents are dealing with water pipes freezing and bursting.

The issue is impacting everyone, from homes to high-rises.

Many plumbing companies are working non-stop, responding to situation after situation.

“These exterior walls are the ones that’s going to get the coldest. So as you can see right here, you got a busted pipe,” Adrian Gonzalez with Roto-Rooter told Channel 2 Action News’ Larry Spruill.

This is just one of the situations that Gonzalez said his crews have been dealing with.

“As you can see, the ceiling just collapsed,” said Gonzalez.

The recent sub-freezing temperatures have been causing a lot of issues around the metro area when it comes to pipes.

“Oh my gosh, I would say Friday night is when everything started to kick off. Saturday and especially, yesterday on Christmas, it’s been crazy busy,” Gonzalez said.

Channel 2 has reported on broken pipes across the metro Atlanta area over the last couple of days, from Fairburn to Downtown Atlanta, where many apartments and businesses flooded.

“We’ve had busted pipes, everywhere. I’ve been doing this for about 20 years, I’ve been working here in Atlanta for 12 years and I’ve never seen it like this before,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez said there are ways you can prevent this from happening.

“One of the most common ways, and it’s really simple, is if you leave your faucets dripping overnight, so that you can have some water constantly flowing through the pipes,” Gonzalez said. “They also sell these covers that you put on the outside spigots to protect the spigots from freezing up.”

HVAC companies are navigating an influx of calls, as Florida’s cold winter weather has been a reality for days.

Action News Jax reporter Kennedy Dendy followed a technician with Snyder Air Conditioning, Plumbing and Electric on a home visit to learn more about what customers are dealing with.

Julie Schuneman has lived in her Jacksonville home for 25 years.

“Yesterday afternoon the unit outside started making a horrendous racket,” Schuneman said. “I was convinced the fans were going to fly off into space.”

So she called Snyder.

“They always take good care of me,” Schuneman said.

After meeting with a technician, she learned her compressor was failing, which supplies the heat and cooling for the whole system.

She’ll need a major repair or possibly a replacement.

Vice President Tim Wood said between Saturday and Sunday — over 400 phone calls came into their office.

“There has been a really huge impact on our call center, as well as our techs in the field,” Wood said.

While some callers over the past few days required home visits, Wood says others only needed education about their systems.

“You might hear your system going through some weird sounds that you don’t normally hear,” Wood said. “With heat pumps, that’s totally normal. Just keep an eye on your thermostat. If it starts to lose temperature from what you have it set on, that’s a good sign that you might have an issue going on.”

He said the cold weather has put a strain on equipment, and it’s important to get routine maintenance on your systems.

“Everyone is inundated with phone calls right now. We are doing our best to keep up,” said Steven Akian owner of Akian Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning. The company is in its fifth year but Akian himself has nearly 15 years of experience in the HVAC business.

“They can’t find people to service their equipment,” Akian said of customers calling in. “Customers are turning on their ACs and they are either not turning on or not blowing out cold air. That’s a problem.”

Akian said this time of year, they usually see roughly 60 calls a day for service, but that number has jumped drastically this week. The company received 297 phone calls on Monday alone.

Most of those callers have had to be turned away.

If you’re turning your AC on for the first time this season, Akian recommended having your cooling systems refrigerant levels checked, along with the accuracy of your thermostat.

Akian does not recommend people waiting as long as possible to turn on their air conditioner. He said it often results in people discovering issues when it’s too late.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis took aim at San Francisco, calling the city a “dumpster fire” while expressing fears about what would happen if companies there relocated to Florida.

“There is cause for concern,” DeSantis said during an event Monday. “Texas would have all these companies moved from California over the years. So you’d have companies move from San Francisco to Austin, and they’d bring hundreds of employees with them. And those employees would vote the exact same way they voted that turned San Francisco into the dumpster fire that it is.”

DeSantis expressed fears that California voters could begin moving to Florida, saying they fail to make the connection between “leftist” policies and the problems they left behind.

“It’s like the leftism, they will not draw the connection between their leftist ideology and the destruction that’s all around them,” DeSantis said. “It’s a problem because I do think there’s a class of voters who would come to Florida, and they would continue to vote the same way.”

The Republican governor’s comments come as many high-profile companies and entrepreneurs in the technology industry have either expressed interest in, or already have, moved from California to Texas and Florida.

Among the most high-profile movers was Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who moved from California to Texas last year and has publicly floated the idea of ​​moving Tesla’s headquarters with him. While a Tesla move to Texas hasn’t happened yet, the company has invested in a large facility close to Austin and appears poised to make Texas a priority.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo is concerned about a projected $3 billion cost overrun for the BART extension to downtown San Jose, attributed to designs that use a controversial single-bore, 85-foot-deep subway concept pushed by VTA.

Nevertheless, VTA is moving forward. From a San Jose Mercury News story about the VTA Board’s decision Thursday to award contracts for the project. “VTA approves $235 million San Jose BART extension contract — so why is it also reviewing its controversial design?”:

The unanimous vote from the board puts the VTA in the unusual position of awarding a $235 million contract that moves forward with the extension’s “single-bore” tunnel plan, while simultaneously launching a new analysis of the contentious design.

As reported previously, in an attempt to eliminate disruption to merchants, VTA had decided on a $9 billion deep, single-bore subway plan–which analysis shows could cost some $3 billion more than conventional tunneling–to construct the six-mile BART extension under downtown San Jose. VTA’s preferred design would place the two tracks stacked one above the other inside a super-large, single tunnel (see comparative diagrams below). This single-bore construction technique can make sense in cities that need to avoid underground obstacles such as legacy subway tunnels (think London, Tokyo, etc). But, of course, there aren’t any subways, crooked streets, or other such obstacles in San Jose.

But merchants always want transit in a subway, the deeper the better, with the belief that if it’s deep underground construction will have no impact on their businesses. It also, however, means when the subway is finished riders will have longer trips to and from the platforms. It also complicates construction, fire safety, and operations, since trains can’t switch from track to track without building complicated ramps between the two levels.

Nevertheless, it seemed San Jose politics had all but locked in the controversial, single-bore design, despite pushback from transit advocates. But at Thursday evening’s VTA board meeting, as reported in advocate Adina Levin’s Green Caltrain blog, Mayor Liccardo submitted his memo calling for reviews of the project to explore:

• Better connections at Diridon Station
• Entrances on both sides of Santa Clara Street at the downtown station
• Support for very high density transit oriented development

…and, most notably, an independent analysis comparing single-bore and dual-bore options, building on an earlier analysis done in 2017. Also from Green Caltrain:

“…the tradeoffs of the single and dual-bore options with regard to “passenger safety, rider access and experience, cost, and construction delay.” The previous analysis in 2017 had focused on constructability and operability, but did not compare the construction techniques for the ability to support better rider access and dense transit oriented development.

The memo from the Mayor is co-signed by San Jose Council Member and VTA board chair Chappie Jones, and Council Member Raul Peralez. Earlier this year, San Jose City Council had approved a resolution calling for improvements to the project relating to transit connections, multiple entrances, TOD, and alleviating construction impacts on businesses.

Since VTA originally made the decision in favor of the single bore option in 2018, concerns have grown regarding limitations in the project design and increasing cost estimates. SPUR and grassroots advocacy organizations such as the Transbay Coalition and Friends of Caltrain have called for passenger-focused improvements to the project, including adding entrances on both sides of the street, better passenger flow, better transit connections, and better support for transit-oriented development. A conventional subway design, with the train tunnels built side-by-side and far closer to the surface, makes it easier to accommodate such improvements.

OAKLAND (CBS SF) — The Oakland Education Association on Sunday announced it was planning a one-day teacher strike this Friday over planned permanent school closures and what the group called “unfair labor practices.”

The official Oakland Education Association Twitter account posted information about the strike Sunday afternoon. In addition to pickets outside of Oakland Unified School District schools starting at 6:30 am on Friday, April 29, the post said there would also be an OEA block party at the Lake Amphitheater.

“OEA is launching a new contract campaign for safe and racially just community schools for all Oakland students!” the message read. The organization is pushing to garner support as they negotiate their next three-year contract with the district.

For months, the OEA — along with Oakland Unified parents and students — have been protesting planned closures approved by district officials earlier this year.

According to the plan, Brookfield Elementary, Carl B. Munck Elementary, Grass Valley Elementary, Horace Mann Elementary and Korematsu Discovery Academy will close in the 2022-2023 school year, while Hillcrest K-8 would close its middle school grades. Rise Community Elementary and New Highland Academy will merge this year into one school.

Oakland Unified issued a letter in response to the strike announcement later Sunday afternoon. It read in part:

“The purported basis for this potential strike is in protest over the consolidation of district schools. If this is correct, we demand that OEA immediately cease and desist from moving forward with this strike.

There is no legal basis for any concerted activity that would justify a strike or refusal to perform services benefiting District students. OEA is strongly encouraged to consult with its legal counsel before counting any votes, before announcing any results, and especially before taking any actual action. To be clear, any strike, other withholding of unit member services, or other concerted activity that disrupts the education of District students would be unlawful and an unfair labor practice, a violation of the current collective bargaining agreement between the District and OEA, and a
violation of the EERA.

More importantly, the impact on students would be significant. In light of the lost instruction due to the pandemic, OEA and OUSD worked hard together to ensure that in-person instruction was the norm for this school year. Even the threat of again depriving students of instruction, let alone an actual deprivation, especially without legal justification, will only further hurt students.”

Amid a dayslong heat wave in Massachusetts, the Boston Teachers Union said Monday temperatures reached above 80 degrees in classrooms and called for improvements to air conditioning in schools.

The union on Monday posted 22 photos to a Facebook album that appeared to show temperatures of upwards of 80 degrees that were recorded inside. It wasn’t clear in which schools the photos were taken.

Boston Public Schools said in a statement that officials are communicating with schools to ensure those without air conditioning systems have “two fans operating in each classroom and learning space.”

BPS also said they have issued guidance with school leaders to suggest limited outdoor activity, frequent water breaks for students, and keeping learning spaces cool by minimizing use of overhead lights and using blinds to block sunlight.

“BPS has also worked to make sure that HVAC systems are fully functioning in schools that have them,” the statement said. “Additionally, BPS shared guidance with school leaders suggesting that teachers limit outdoor activity, schedule cool-down breaks for students between lessons, and distance students so they may remove their masks whenever possible. There is a large supply of water for students to drink at each school and we ask that educators keep students hydrated with frequent water breaks throughout the day, regardless of activity level. BPS also encouraged school leaders and staff to take measures to keep learning spaces cool including minimizing the use of overhead lights, opening windows and operating fans, and closing shades and blinds to block sunlight.”

Boston reached 90 degrees for the fourth day in a row, marking the first official heat wave of the season. At 1 p.m. on Tuesday, it was 93 degrees in Boston, said National Weather Service Meteorologist Alan Durham, and temperatures in eastern Massachusetts ranged from 92 to 94 degrees.

In anticipation of the scorching heat, some school districts said over the weekend that they would be releasing students early on Monday and Tuesday.

Students at Worcester Public Schools were released three hours early on Monday and Tuesday, and students in Lexington, Wellesley, Stoneham, Winchester, Braintree, Springfield, Watertown, Lowell, Wilmington, Westford, and Holyoke were also dismissed early due to the heat.

All after-school activities were canceled for Boston students, according to BPS.
