Updated: 5:45pm Wednesday

The following is an update from the Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services:

Subway was reopened at approximately 4:30 pm (Wednesday) after verification that the plumbing was repaired.

Previously

The Subway sandwich shop on Fourth Street in Eureka was closed Tuesday after food inspectors found an “inoperable toilet and standing wastewater” in the establishment’s bathroom.

Subway is closed until its plumbing is repaired.

“Due to (a) lack of operable toilet available for food employees, the facility must cease operation and (the) permit to operate is suspended by this office,” a report released Wednesday by the Department of Health and Human Services stated.

Subway has 15 days to request a hearing on the issue.

“A food facility shall not operate if there is sewage overflowing or backing up in the food facility or there are no operable toilets available for food employees,” the report states. “This is an imminent health hazard and major violation that requires reinspection.”

The inspector also saw a “mold-like substance” on the soda machine drainboard. It also noted, “ice buildup in the interior of the freezer” noting servicing was needed.

South San Francisco Unified School District schools will be closed Thursday due to the major storm expected to hit the state today.

“According to the National Weather Service, a major storm will hit the Bay Area at 3 pm on Wednesday, Jan. 4,” said Superintendent Shawnterra Moore. “Based on this information and out of an abundance of caution, our district is planning to cancel classes on Thursday, Jan. 5.”

The district serves the communities of Daly City, South San Francisco and San Bruno.

The storm is expected to bring heavy rain and high winds that could result in flooding and power outages that impact roads and make driving difficult, according to a press release from the district. Consequently, all extracurricular and athletic activities scheduled for today and Thursday have been canceled.

“Jan. 4 is a minimum day, and we highly encourage families to pick up their children from school as soon as possible and to be off the roads and home by 3 pm on that day,” Moore said.

After school care will be available this afternoon for essential workers who are unable to take time off, but there will be no extended care services on Thursday.

This is a curated list of the Bay Area’s most notable and permanent restaurant and bar closures, with new updates published once a week. See a closing we missed? Then drop us a line.

December 10

CIVIC CENTER — Mela Tandoori Indian and Pakistani restaurant, which has been serving buffet lunches near City Hall for 35 years, has sadly closed, Tablehopper reports. Per an Instagram post, they shuttered on October 1 due to a “huge plumbing problem” but may be on the hunt for a new location.

MISSION — New Korean-Mexican restaurant El Coreano has closed after only a year, also according to Tablehopper.

RICHMOND — Kaiju Cooks served its last ramen and sushi to Balboa Street on October 31, although sister restaurant Kaiju Eats on Geary Boulevard remains open, per the SF Chronicle.

MARKET — Fog City News, the downtown newsstand with a surprisingly impressive array of chocolate, is closing at the end of the year. It’s the culmination of a 22-year run, according to Tablehopper.

SFO — SFGATE gave a rundown on what’s still closed at the airport: Gott’s Roadside (international), Super Duper Burger (terminal 3), Sweet Maple (terminal 2), Tartine (international), Tacos Cala (international), Kamin Thai Fried Chicken (international) all remain dark with “no plans to reopen.”

OAKLAND — One of Oakland’s oldest boba shops is closing after 28 sweet years. The owners of Sweet Booth want to retire, and despite trying to sell the business this fall, they were unable to find new owners, according to the SF Chronicle.

OAKLAND — Pastel-pretty Miette has closed its Jack London Square location, after a dozen years and some gnarly landlord issues, Tablehopper reports. But thankfully the patisserie has already moved and opened a new location in Montclair Village.

BERKELEY — Lucky Bird, a fast-casual street food spot on Shattuck, has closed after only two years, Berkeleyside reports. It’s being replaced by Cousins Asian Street Food, but despite being a similar-sounding concept, it’s unclear if the new restaurant is from the same owners.

BERKELEY — Berkeleyside also reports that the mom-and-pop owners of the Oriental Restaurant have served their last bowls of pho to hungry students and are retiring after several decades on Shattuck.

SACRAMENTO — Downtown lunch spot La Bonne Soupe has closed after 16 years of line-worthy French onion soup and sandwiches, the Sacramento Bee reports.

SACRAMENTO — Favorite Chinese breakfast spot Harry’s Cafe will close on December 31, as the owner wants to retire after 17 years in the restaurant game, according to the Sacramento Bee. The owner’s son shouted out his dad in a cute Facebook post.

PALO ALTO — The owners of Anatolian Kitchen are retiring the Turkish restaurant after 10 years, and replacing it with Naschmarkt Palo Alto, a sister restaurant to their popular Viennese market in Campbell, per Palo Alto Weekly.

SANTA CLARA — El Camino Mongolian BBQ is putting away the barbecue buffet after 28 years and closing on December 15, SFGATE reports. Per a note on the restaurant website, the owners plan to return to Korea, and SFGATE adds they’re losing their business visa.

CARMEL — First built in 1947, Rocky Point Restaurant is a sprawling seafood restaurant with dramatic views of the coast. And now, the 75-year-old seafood gem has sold for $8 million to a real estate development group, as reported by the Monterey Herald. Apparently chef Justin Cogley of Michelin-starred L’Auberge Carmel will be involved with the new restaurant and menu.

November 19

CASTRO — Reveille Coffee has closed its popular location on 18th Street, where coffee drinkers and their pups used to gather in the mini front patio secluded by plants, Hoodline reports. Open for a good run of seven years, this location recently closed for renovations, and the owners said they’ve decided not to return. North Beach, Lower Haight, Mission Bay, and Berkeley locations remain open.

EMERYVILLE — The E’Ville Eye was first to report that Hip Hop Juice Box coffee shop has closed after only two years. In his goodbye Instagram post, the owner went out quoting the Notorious B.I.G., and it sounds like this might not be the end of the story, so stay tuned for a comeback.

THE RICHMOND — The Outer Richmond has lost an essential Shanghainese restaurant, What Now San Francisco spotted first. Jiangnan Cuisine will serve its last lion’s head meatballs and spicy braised beef noodles soon, as a new tea shop called Tea O’Clock has taken over the license.

LOS ANGELES — And not technically in the Bay Area, but from a beloved Bay Area chef, Melissa Perello announced on Instagram that she will not be reopening M. Georgina, the restaurant she debuted in LA only four months before the pandemic descended. In San Francisco, Octavia has reopened, and Frances is planning to reopen soon, so the silver lining is that it’s good to have the star chef back and refocusing on her restaurants in the Bay.

November 12

NOB HILL — Venticello Ristorante has closed permanently after 29 years of fresh pasta atop Nob Hill, the SF Chronicle confirmed. The restaurant has been closed since spring 2020, and the family told the Chron that without the usual tourists at neighboring hotels, they were unable to reopen. But sister restaurant Nob Hill Cafe is still serving.

NOB HILL — French-slash-Japanese Keiko, the tasting menu spot with white tablecloths and one Michelin star (awarded in 2019), has closed after 10 years in Nob Hill, according to Tablehopper.

MISSION — Tablehopper spotted that Son’s Addition has closed on 24th Street, although the family promises they’re looking for a new location with a full liquor license. Their new restaurant Otra remains open with lots of fresh masa and smoky mezcal cocktails in Lower Haight.

OAKLAND — Bar Dogwood bar is done for now, Tablehopper also reports. But some of the bar’s cocktails live on, as the owners have replaced it with Stinky’s Bar, which is now filled with deliberately creepy clown memorabilia.

OAKLAND — Roam Burgers has closed its only location in Oakland, a tipster was sad to report. Although the grass-fed burgers and sweet potato fries are still available at five locations in San Francisco and around the Bay.

MOUNTAIN VIEW — Hawaiian favorite Pearl Cafe served its last Spam musubi on Halloween, ending a run of 15 years, SFGATE reports.

SAN JOSE — And the definitely less beloved Agave Sports Bar finally closed down for good on October 17, following a lawsuit from the city, allegations of drug use, and a car crash and death of a staffer, according to SFGATE.

November 5

MISSION — Above Ground, the vegan brew pub from the same owners as Millennium, will spin its last vegan pizza this Saturday, November 6, the SF Chronicle reports. The owners told the Chron they were busy on weekends, but not during the week, and sadly that wasn’t enough to pull through the pandemic.

CASTRO — Oz Burgers has closed after a couple of years on 18th Street, but the same owners are replacing it with Wicked 6 Bar & Bites, flipping burgers into cocktails and small plates, according to Hoodline. The owner said he hoped to receive fewer complaints about prices, which he had to raise to pay his vendors.

CASTRO — Hoodline also reports that Me & Tasty Thai cafe, which had sweet brunch and boba drinks, has shuttered on 17th Street. The family is moving to Boise, Idaho, where they plan to open another Thai restaurant.

OAKLAND — The once hip Dosa Indian restaurant group has closed its last brick-and-mortar restaurant in Oakland, Berkeleyside reported first. Dosa already closed the Valencia location in 2019, the Fillmore spot in 2020, and filed for bankruptcy. But it does appear to be continuing with takeout and delivery, as well as packaged grocery items.

OAKLAND — Blue Bottle Coffee, which was once small and local, but of course now is a multi-million dollar global brand, has shuttered its original location near Jack London Square after more than a decade, the SF Chronicle confirmed. Last call for third-wave lattes is this Sunday, November 7.

OAKLAND — After 35 years of simple seasonal pastas, pizzas, and vegetables, Oliveto is ending its run as an Italian institution in Rockridge, Berkeleyside reported first. Berkeleyside reminds us that Michael Tusk of Quince and Paul Bertolli of Chez Panisse both once ran this kitchen, but now the owners are retiring. Grab a reservation before they wind down in the next couple of months, should you wish to pay respects.

BERKELEY — Mise en Place Kitchen has closed after a little more than a year, Berkeleyside reports. Friends and neighbors will miss the nourishing cafe fare with Brazilian touches, and especially that cake of the day.

October 21

POLK GULCH — Encore Karaoke Lounge seems to have belted its last tune. A tipster notified Eater SF that one of the bartenders posted on social media, indicating that the divey karaoke bar has quietly and unexpectedly closed, and its Google and Yelp listings have been updated to permanently closed.

NORTH BEACH — Original U.S., an Italian-American restaurant dating back to the 1890s, has served its last lasagna and gnocchi, according to the SF Chronicle. Co-owner Alberto Cipollino told the Chron he has struggled to find staff, but also at 77 years old, he’s ready to retire.

THE RICHMOND — The SF Chronicle also spotted that cozy izakaya Halu has gone dark, posting a “for lease” sign in the window and not answering calls or emails. Neighborhood friends will surely miss the ramen and skewers.

OAKLAND, SAN MATEO — Just four months after getting busted for mislabeling beef, Belcampo shut down all of its restaurants and butcher shops, including the locations in Oakland and San Mateo. The company also dirty deleted all of its social media accounts, and terminated all of its employees by text, as Eater LA details in the full story.

NAPA — Stone Brewing, the San Diego brewery known for hopped IPA, lost a legal battle over pandemic back rent, and is packing up and leaving its historic digs in Napa, the SF Chronicle reports.

SANTA ROSA — Creperie Chez Solange will close at the end of October, according to Sonoma Magazine. The owner said he struggled to find staff and run his restaurant solo for seven months, before finally folding the last of his popular buckwheat crepes with ham and gruyere.

October 15

COW HOLLOW — Favorite neighborhood Italian restaurant Pane e Vino closed on August 26, ending a pizza, pasta, and puttanesca run of 30 years. A note on the website thanks customers for the many memories.

NORTH BEACH — Tacolicious shuttered its North Beach location, as announced on Instagram on September 2, the SF Chronicle spotted. But the tacos and margaritas are still flowing at the Mission and Marina outposts, and at the latter, there’s a new “barklet” happy hour for pups.

OAKLAND — Berkeleyside reports that Batch Pastries closed and cooled the ovens on September 25. Owner Emily Buysse said it was a complicated “combination of factors,” and fans will miss the croissants and scones.

OAKLAND — Bierhaus moved from Mountain View to Oakland in 2018, and now has closed that Oakland beer garden but is going to stay open in Walnut Creek, according to Berkeleyside. So drive further east for the meaty Oktoberfest menu of sausages, pretzels, and warm potato salad.

BERKELEY — Imperial Tea Court closed on August 26, following 16 years worth of dumplings, noodles, and tea, Berkeleyside reports. The owner cited staffing issues, but the Ferry Building location remains open.

SACRAMENTO — Popular De Vere’s Irish Pubs are closing in both Sacramento and Davis, according to the Sacramento Bee. Despite recently remodeling and reopening, the owners told the Bee, “We haven’t been able to dig ourselves out of the hole that the pandemic created.” They poured out their last pints on October 3.

SAN MATEO — Ben Tre Vietnamese restaurant closed its San Mateo location on September 1, the SF Chronicle spotted first. But Ben Tre remains open in South San Francisco and Millbrae, and sister restaurant Gao is still open in San Mateo — plus, the owner is promising a new San Francisco spot, for all those craving that phozilla monster bowl of noodles and lobster.

SUNNYVALE — Longhorn Charcoal Pit bar and grill has served its last steaks and burgers after a wild ride of 61 years, Mercury News reports. The Old Western style grill closed on October 10.

September 24

SOMA — In Situ has permanently closed within SFMOMA, as first spotted by the SF Chronicle. Star chef Corey Lee opened the museum restaurant in 2016, curating dishes by chefs from around the world, garnering a Michelin star, James Beard award, and other accolades. An Instagram post explained the restaurant simply ran through its five-year partnership with the museum, saying “Our collection included over 100 dishes spanning more than 25 countries, 20 U.S cities, and almost 50 years…. It was an honor to learn from some of the most innovative, talented, and influential chefs in the world and represent them here in San Francisco.”

MISSION — The Flour + Water team announced Central Kitchen is officially closing, the SF Chronicle reported first. It isn’t a huge shock, as that location has been operating as a pasta shop for most of the pandemic. But now, it’s going to become Penny Roma, a casual new pasta restaurant, slated to open in October.

CIVIC CENTER — Corridor won’t be coming back either, the Hi Neighbor Hospitality Group confirmed. Owner Ryan Cole says they plan to flip that location and reopen as the Madrigal, a new concept catering to the opera and arts crowd, coming later this winter.

NOE VALLEY — Bistro SF Grill has served its last Balkan dishes and wine to Castro and 24th, Tablehopper reports. In a goodbye post, the owners didn’t share a specific reason for the closure, but said they’re selling off the last of the beer and wine.

CASTRO — Hoodline reports Weaver’s Coffee & Tea has quietly and permanently closed within the Fitness SF on Market.

FRUITVALE — Reem’s Arab bakery officially departed its original location in Fruitvale on August 31, the SF Chronicle reported first. Owner Reem Assil thanked the neighborhood for five great years, although she’s not going too far, moving into a new production bakery in the Restore Oakland building nearby. And she’s handing the keys over to Crystal Wahpepah, a popular indigenous chef and caterer in Oakland.

September 10

BERKELEY — There’s one less spot to grab a coffee in the East Bay after Espresso Roma closed its doors in August. The shop was founded in 1980, and owner David “Sandy” Boyd told Berkeleyside that the $18,000 rent was outpacing the $300 per day income, leading him to tell the landlord he’d shutter as soon as there was someone else to take the space.

WALNUT GROVE — An iconic waterfront restaurant located in the California Delta was destroyed by a fire on Thursday, the San Jose Mercury News reports. Giusti’s has been run by the same family for more than a century but the wooden building was declared a total loss after flames ripped through earlier this week.

SACRAMENTO — Olive Branch, a Fair Oaks cafe, also closed in August. Owner Jordan Anderson opened the restaurant during the pandemic and told the Bee he closed because “the state didn’t offer enough financial assistance during shutdowns.”

SANTA ROSA (CBS SF / BCN) – Residents of 95 homes and a four-unit apartment building in the Bennett Valley neighborhood of Santa Rosa were evacuated Sunday afternoon due to flooding, city officials said.

Flooding in the area also prompted the Sonoma County Office of Education to cancel classes at schools in the Bennett Valley Union School District on Monday.

The fire department went door-to-door to alert homeowners in Neotomas Avenue and Tachevah Drive, Brookhaven Drive, Tuscan Drive, and the Washoe Court area, said Adriane Mertens, Santa Rosa Public Information Officer.

The city received multiple reports of flooding, fallen trees and power lines early Sunday afternoon, according to the Santa Rosa Fire Department.

“We have several dozen homes in the process of being evacuated, with rapid water rescue teams as well as our high-profile wildland fire engines pulling door to door to get people out of harm’s way as the water continues to rise in the neighborhood,” said Assistant Fire Marshal Paul Lowenthal .

Raw Video: Evacuations in the Santa Rosa Bennett Valley Area

Officials asked residents in the area to remove their belongings from the ground floor and garage due to the rising water. All residents in low areas were encouraged to do the same.

During the evacuation, residents of two houses needed help and the city called services to help them. City buses were also dispatched to help the evacuees.

The city is working to lower the flood. Debris will be removed from the drainage areas and drains will be cleared so the water can flow properly, Mertens said.

At around 4:26 p.m., the fire brigade announced that the water level had dropped significantly, but the road closures and evacuations would continue until the precipitation rates subsided.

LOS ANGELES – Sunshine drew crowds to California’s beaches and parks on Sunday despite a statewide stay-at-home order, leading to further closings as officials announced plans to step up testing for the coronavirus.

Santa Monica closed oceanfront parking lots to deter people from visiting its famous beach, and Los Angeles was due to do the same in neighboring Venice Beach starting Monday to help curb the spread of the virus.

Most of the people on the sand made sure to follow the guidelines to stay 6 feet away from others. But spacing became an issue in popular areas like Venice’s Promenade, leading Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti to reprimand visitors for “being too close together too often”.

“The longer we do this, the more people will get sick and more people will die,” Garcetti said at an evening press conference.

Dozens of parks, trails, and facilities in the Los Angeles area that were overseen by the Mountain Recreation and Conservation Authority were closed on Sunday.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, authorities have closed Drakes Beach, Agate Beach, and other popular coastal locations, including Point Reyes Lighthouse and Chimney Rock Headlands.

President Donald Trump passed a major disaster statement on Sunday in support of California’s COVID-19 preparedness and emergency response. The move will free up federal funds to help with mass supplies and emergency aid, unemployment assistance and legal assistance in the event of disasters.

Trump also announced that he had ordered the Federal Emergency Management Agency to send mobile hospital centers to California, Washington and New York.

When the U.S. Navy ship Mercy arrives in Los Angeles, it will open 1,000 beds and become the city’s largest hospital, Garcetti said. The time of the ship’s arrival was not disclosed.

The mayor said the city will set up a website this week that will direct people to centers where they can be tested for the virus. The first tests would be reserved for the “most vulnerable people,” including those with symptoms, those aged 65 and over, and those with pre-existing conditions, the mayor said.

In neighboring Riverside County, testing began this weekend in a drive-through facility outside a minor league ballpark in Lake Elsinore.

Governor Gavin Newsom’s order last week that Californians should stay home to contain the pandemic in the nation’s most populous state was by far the most comprehensive and was followed by similar announcements in New York and Illinois.

California is one of the hardest hit states, with more than 1,600 confirmed cases and 30 deaths on Sunday, according to a record from Johns Hopkins University.

Newsom has said that COVID-19 virus infection rates are doubling every four days in some areas. He predicted that millions could contract the virus in the next two months if aggressive prevention is not taken.

Newsom ordered $ 42 million in emergency funding to allow the state to rent two hospitals – Seton Medical Center in Daly City and St. Vincent Medical Center in Los Angeles – for three months to serve patients with COVID-19 supply.

The emergency fund will also be used to buy or refurbish ventilators, provide more patient transportation services, and expand testing capacity in a government laboratory.

Residents were instructed to stay away from others, not to gather in groups, and to wash their hands frequently. They can get food, fill out prescriptions, seek medical help, look after vulnerable relatives or neighbors, and get exercise, such as going for a walk.

Petrol stations, supermarkets and convenience stores were open, as were auto repair shops. Those who did important services, such as plumbers and electricians, continued to work. But restaurants only delivered or offered take-away.

Closing a bar or restaurant can mark the end of an era, especially for the customers who loved the space and have visited over the years. But the silver lining for some of the companies featured in this month’s round-up of closings is that the end doesn’t necessarily mean the end: some are closing to rethink themselves, with plans to start a new business again open.

In one case this month, the closure means a newer, bigger space – like the one with The Kebabery in Oakland. Here is a curated selection of companies that closed in San Francisco and beyond over the past month.

Below is the list of restaurants, bars, and other food businesses in the Bay Area that were permanently closed in July. For more restaurant and bar closings in the Bay Area in 2021, click here.

Bar in San Francisco Good Trip says au revoir, but the Bon Vivants crew hasn’t completely given up their space yet – another bar concept by the group is already in the works and the space is being renovated for an early opening. Read more at sf.eater.com.

The exterior of the Fiddleheads Cafe in Mendocino, California.

Courtesy Chris Castleman / Fiddleheads Cafe

After months of controversy in Mendocino during the pandemic, Fiddleheads Cafe permanently closed on July 4th. The building that housed the cafe was bought by new owners who refused to renew owner Chris Castleman’s lease from month to month. Read more here.

The kebabery closed its dig in Oakland in July, but that doesn’t mean it’s gone forever. Instead, the group will move to a more suitable room that has a larger kitchen and space for Sesame a Tiny Bakery, its pastry shop. Read more at sfchronicle.com. (SFGATE and the San Francisco Chronicle are both owned by Hearst, but operate independently.)

Fort Point Beer’s first brewery company, Mill Valley beer factory, closed after 11 years in business. Founders Justin and Tyler Catalana first opened Mill Valley Beerworks in 2009, before later establishing the Fort Point Beer Company and its four subsequent taprooms. Read more here.

Patty’s Inn lived to see 88 years as a dive bar in San Jose but closed forever to make way for a google campus. This campus will include an office development, residential units, parks and retail space. Read more here.

Posie in Larkspur has put down its ice cream scoop for the time being. After the lease expired, chef and owner Kyle Caporicci decided not to renew and instead move to a new business called Ghost Dog Creamery. Read more here.

Top round roast beef closed its doors in early July after four years in the Mission District. The advantage is that head chef Ricky Lopez will open his own restaurant concept on the premises in August. Read more here.

The reopening of the economy in California on June 15 ushered in the moment all restaurants and bars were waiting for: a return of customers and some semblance of normalcy for the businesses that struggled during the pandemic last year.
As California counts down the days until its economy reopens on June 15, many restaurant owners breathe a sigh of relief: It seems like the worst, maybe, just maybe, is over. However, some companies will fail to see this day. A number of popular San Francisco restaurants closed in May and late April, from the famous 20th Century Cafe in Hayes Valley to the 40-year-old Italian comfort restaurant Ristorante Parma in the marina.

Below is the list of restaurants, bars, and other food businesses in the Bay Area that are closed this month. For more closings in the Bay Area in 2021, click here.

6. and B

In early May, Eater SF reported that the Inner Richmond brunch spot would be permanently closed. According to Eater, the owner is moving his other restaurant, the Sushi Bistro, to 452 Balboa St. due to its outdoor space. However, some of the 6th and breakfast favorites remain on the menu.

20th century cafe

Perhaps the month’s most shocking closure announcement was the 20th Century Cafe, Hayes Valley Café, famous for its layered honey cake. Chief owner Michelle Polzine told Eater SF that the shutdown was less due to the pandemic than because “San Francisco is not welcoming to small business owners,” she said. Continue reading.

Benkyodo

This popular bakery and mochi shop is Japantown’s oldest business: Suyeichi Okamura opened it in 1906. Now Suyeichi’s grandsons Ricky and Bobby Okamura are retiring. The brothers told KQED that they hope to keep the family business during the sale. Continue reading.

Da Nang Vietnamese

This 38-year-old Vietnamese restaurant in Albany recently closed due to the pandemic, according to Berkeleyside. However, a second Da Nang site in Antioch remains open.

homestead

After nine years on Piedmont Avenue, Oakland’s upscale Homestead restaurant closed this month. “Even if things are slowly opening up, we have realized that it is time for a lifestyle change,” the owners wrote on Instagram. “… We achieved what we set out to do and a lot more in nine years with dinner, and we are proud of the work we have done. We feel that we are doing something new with dignity can pass over. ” The owners’ pandemic fulcrum, The Humble Sandwich, will remain open for the foreseeable future. Continue reading.

Myriad Gastropub

In late April, Tablehopper reported that the 6 year old Mission Gastropub will not be reopening. “After a lot of soul searching and thoughtful consideration, I decided to hand over the reins of this amazing space and let someone new try it,” wrote Chef and Owner Trish Tracey on Instagram.

salary

Chef Dennis Lee confirmed to the San Francisco Chronicle (SFGATE and the San Francisco Chronicle are both owned by Hearst but operate independently) that his California Korean restaurant on the Mission is permanently closed. Namu Gaji originally closed in 2019 for seismic retrofitting, with plans to move to a new room in SoMa, but the pandemic foiled those plans.

Out the door

The spin-off restaurant Slanted Door in Pacific Heights has closed after 11 years, as reported by Tablehopper for the first time. “It was a pleasure to be part of the #fillmorestreetsf district,” said an Instagram announcement from Out the Door. “OTD will not reopen. We are grateful to our team, front and back, for doing their best to ensure quality food and service.” The Slanted Door location in the Ferry Building is temporarily closed, although a new location is opening in San Ramon.

Parma restaurant

After more than 40 years in business, the southern Italian comfort food spot in the Marina District announced its closure. “It breaks my heart to have to do this, but it has to be done for my well-being,” wrote owner Angela Elia in a heartfelt post on Instagram. Ristorante Parma has been in the family since 1980 and Elia thought about working in the restaurant since she was 19. Read more.

Topsy’s bar

Topsy’s, a circus-inspired bar near the Dragon’s Gate entrance to Chinatown, is closing after seven years, according to Eater SF. While the popular after-work drink spot is over, owner Angela Voloshyna has something new up her sleeve: DecoDance, a new bar that she has just opened on Polk Street.

During the coronavirus pandemic, park visits in the Bay Area have spiked as residents look for easy escape routes to find shelter at home. This has led park officials to close select areas where people may congregate, but has also helped move large numbers to popular areas that remain open.

The best example of high usage is the Peninsula’s Crystal Springs Regional Trail, which recorded 122,089 visitors in May and June, according to Carla Schoof, communications specialist with the San Mateo County Parks Department. Crystal Springs, one of the Bay Area’s most popular recreational destinations, had 66,297 visitors over the same period last year.

“We’re very busy,” said Schoof. “We’re almost twice as high in Crystal Springs. This also applies to many of our parks. Parks are clearly the place to be. “

The East Bay is experiencing a similar rush of visitors. “Sometimes we seem like the only game in town,” said Bob Doyle, general manager of the East Bay Regional Park District.

Of the more than 350 recreational destinations in the Bay Area listed in The Chronicle’s Outdoor Guide, more than 300 are open. All or part of the remaining 50 or so could remain closed through the summer, park managers said.

Here’s a rundown of which popular outdoor areas are open and closed in the Bay Area, with tips on how to make a successful visit:

Marin County: At Point Reyes National Seashore, the road to the renovated lighthouse and the adjacent Chimney Rock Headlands is blocked at the Drakes Beach turnoff. North of Bolinas, where every resident has been tested for the coronavirus, a roadblock on Mesa Road will cut access to the Palomarin Trailhead and Coastal Trail for the hike to Bass Lake, Wildcat Camp and Alamere Falls.

The annual Point Reyes Coastal Cleanup Day scheduled for September has been canceled, said Christine Beekman, acting director of interpretation and resource education at Point Reyes National Seashore.

In the Marin Headlands, access to the Point Bonita Lighthouse remains closed according to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Key destinations that have reopened without major problems include the hiking camps at Point Reyes National Seashore, for which reservations are required at www.recreation.gov, and access to the Muir Woods National Monument, for pre-reservations for parking through www.recreation.gov .gomuirwoods are required. com.

Peninsula: “Bike Sundays” on Cañada Road between Interstate 280 and Woodside, one of the most popular weekly cycling events in California, will remain closed with no reopening date, Schoof said.

The most famous coastal destination is the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in Moss Beach, where the San Mateo County Parks Department has gated parking, beach, and tide pools.

“With a few exceptions, our parks are open,” said Schoof. “We say, ‘Bring a mask, put it on if you don’t have social distance.’ We don’t want people to form groups. If a park is crowded and you are not comfortable, move to another place. There are a lot of places for people to choose and a lot of people do that to find out what is out there. “

East Bay: The main entrance to Del Valle Regional Park to access the lake, marina, campgrounds, picnic areas and the starting point for the 45km Ohlone Wilderness Trail is expected to remain until, according to Dave Mason, the East Bay Regional Parks information officer September closed circle. Other closed marquee destinations in the East Bay include Marciel Gate and the campsite in Anthony Chabot Regional Park, as well as the road to Lake Anza and its picnic areas in Tilden Regional Park.

Parks with limited parking that are only accessible include Crown Beach in Alameda, Lake Temescal in Oakland, the Diablo Foothills near Walnut Creek, Shadow Cliffs Lake in Pleasanton, and Contra Loma Reservoir in Antioch.

Outdoors by Tom Stienstra

Visitor traffic has increased on well-weather weekends in major regional parks like Tilden, Lake Chabot, Point Pinole and Mission Peak, Doyle said.

To encourage mask adherence and stop clustering, a problem early in the April pandemic, Doyle said nearly 200 park rangers and firefighters were monitoring visitors in the district’s 73 parks. Over time, he said, visitors adhere to “better than ever, masks and distancing”.

Fishing: Salmon fishing on recreational fishing vessels has been a hit in San Francisco, Sausalito, Emeryville, Berkeley, and Half Moon Bay, where captains had fewer loads to make more space on board boats and marked 6 feet of space between rod holders for trolling . To make it work, most ships have raised the price to $ 200, but most anglers seem happy to pay more to get more freedom of movement, especially with good fishing this summer.

Boats ventured to the Marin coast on Monday, where many captains reported that most people were reaching their two-fish limits. A typical score was on the New Rayann from Sausalito with 26 salmon weighing up to 22 pounds for 13 anglers on board.
