SAN BRUNO (KPIX) — Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board gave Caltrain the all-clear to begin removing the train that was involved in a fiery crash on Thursday from the tracks in San Bruno.

The removal process started Saturday. Crews were busy on the tracks as the train moved ever-so-slowly throughout the day.

RELATED: NTSB Investigators Investigate Cause Of Fiery Caltrain Collision

Simultaneously, NTSB investigators continued combing through the wreckage, collecting as much evidence as they can from the crash.

The train will ultimately be moved to a secure location where investigators can continue to examine it, according to an NTSB spokesperson.

Meanwhile, Caltrain service was still interrupted on Saturday. Caltrain continued to operate a bus bridge between Millbrae, San Bruno and South San Francisco.

While some people were aware of the crash and the bus bridge and budgeted extra time for it, others didn’t know about it and were a bit confused by the process.

“I was going to take the train up to the St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Now I find I have to take a bus. Then I’ve gotta get from the bus back to the train,” said Vince Larkin.

Mike Ruiz didn’t budget the extra time to get up to the city from the South Bay.

“I would describe it as a bit chaotic and hectic,” Ruiz said. “Now I had to reschedule a play that I was going to go watch.”

NORTHSTAR AT TAHOE (CBS SF) – A California Highway Patrol helicopter equipped with high-tech detection equipment began traversing the skies over the Northstar ski area Thursday morning in hopes of receiving a signal from an avalanche safety beacon who may have picked up missing truckee skier Rory Angelotta.

The Placer County sheriff said Angelotta was a skilled skier and reportedly had avalanche gear with her when he disappeared in a snow storm on Saturday.

The search for missing skier Rory Angelotta on @Northstar_CA resumed today. More than 60 employees met today on the first clear day since the search began on Christmas night.
So far, four days of searching in difficult weather conditions have found no trace of Angelotta.

Tracks in deep snow in a remote mountain area had raised hopes on Tuesday, but then found they were being pulled by a bear.

The last of a series of violent winter storms finally moved east early Thursday. As of December 21st, 135 inches – over 11 feet – of snow have fallen at Northstar.

According to the sheriff’s office, friends of Angelotta reported him missing when he failed to show up for Christmas dinner on Saturday night after a day of skiing. Authorities said his car was found in the resort parking lot and his calls went straight to voicemail.

The sheriff’s social media accounts announced Tuesday that the Nevada Air National Guard was deploying a pioneering infrared-equipped Blackhawk helicopter to assist searchers in the current extreme weather conditions.

The sheriff’s office said other resources put in to assist with the search were Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue, Placer County Search and Rescue, Nevada County Search and Rescue, Butte County Search and Rescue, Bay Area Mountain Rescue, Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol and Northstar California Ski Patrol.

The social media posts featured videos and pictures of the search efforts.

– Placer Sheriff (@PlacerSheriff) December 28, 2021

The search for the 43-year-old Truckee resident was hampered by harsh weather conditions that dropped more than four feet of fresh snow. Angelotta was last seen at the Northstar ski resort on Saturday morning.

The investigations have shown that Angelotta’s ski pass was scanned at the Comstockbahn at around 11.30 a.m. No other activity has been recorded on his passport since then.

“Seekers responded and combed the mountain and surrounding areas despite the extreme weather,” said the Placer County Sheriff’s Department. “Rescuers were on their search with skis, snowmobiles and a snowcat. They were confronted with a high risk of avalanches, strong winds, whiteout thunderstorms, icy temperatures and heavy snow loads. “

SAN JOSE (KPIX) – The crews began the final cleanup on Thursday at one of the Bay Area’s most famous homeless camps in South Bay.

The warehouse is located on 55 acres of vacant land in North San Jose owned by Apple.

CONTINUE READING: COVID: Santa Rosa Junior College encourages students to stay enrolled during pandemic

Green flyers were posted informing camp residents that the site would begin closing at 7 a.m. on September 2. The flyers warned that any remaining materials would be removed. Valuables would be stored for 90 days, the rest will be transported to the landfill.

Crews worked much of the day, using bulldozers to scrape the debris into large trash cans and throw up noxious clouds of dust that reeked of human waste and raw sewage.

On August 13, Apple announced a partnership with HomeFirst and said the company would give the nonprofit “several million dollars” to clean up the website and provide shelter for the more than 60 people in the camp.

The residents were offered three types of interim accommodation: a motel room, an emergency bed or a secure parking space. Apple would cover the costs for the case for nine months and the case management for twelve months.

HomeFirst CEO Andrea Urton described Apple’s offer as “generous” and referred to recent major donations from local technology giants. Google and Facebook have donated $ 1 billion, and Apple has pledged $ 2.5 billion to build affordable housing and fund homeless initiatives.

“I don’t think American companies are doing enough. I think there are good people in America. I meet a lot of them every day. And yet I think companies could lean more to be part of the solution. And that means providing resources, financial resources, be it land, whether it’s working with developers to build affordable housing for their employees. Whatever it is, they have to be part of the solution with the city and county, ”said Urton.

She pointed out that funding from the private sector is needed as local government agencies are under budgeted.

“The city and the district are currently doing everything they can, and have been doing so for two years. They are underserved and tired, just like all of us. So if big corporations step in and provide the resources that nonprofits need to be part of the solution, together we can actually end homelessness effectively, ”said Urton.

HomeFirst response teams had offered accommodation to Robert Carlson, who has been on site for several months. But with several large vehicles including an RV, Carlson declined the housing and chose to go solo.

“It’s part of life, isn’t it? Trials and trials, man, ”Carlson said. “Well, we were all one big family here. We were a big family. I already miss everyone. “

Deborah Kempkoble, who has also lived on the premises for several months, accepted the offer for a motel room on the Monterey Highway and said her story “may have a happy ending”.

“You will help me get teeth. Because I don’t have any, do you understand? They will help me get teeth, ”said Kempkoble. “It’s easier to find a job when you have teeth.”

The new construction of a 2.70 meter high black metal fence now surrounds part of the property, which is guarded by a sizeable contingent of Apple’s private security guards.

Regarding Thursday’s cleanup, Apple referred to an earlier statement posted in August:

“Apple has long been focused on tackling the housing crisis across California and working with partners to support communities at risk and provide new affordable units. As the challenges for tenants and potential homeowners continue to increase, we have accelerated our support and have already allocated over $ 1 billion to new projects since early 2020. In San Jose we have been working closely with local partners for several months to identify alternative housing options and to support families who will leave the Component Drive location. We are contracting with HomeFirst – a leading local provider of services, accommodation and accommodation – to provide resources directly to ensure that those currently on that location have access to a range of accommodation, Have resources for casework and other support services. “

ALPINE COUNTY (CBS SF / AP) – Firefighters south of Lake Tahoe faced another busy day of heat and extreme fire behavior along the state line as they battled the still-growing Tamarack Fire on Friday.

The Tamarack Fire south of Lake Tahoe grew approximately 7,000 acres on Thursday to 58,417 acres on Friday morning. The fire burned more than 78 square miles of wood and head-high chaparral in the national forest area. It broke out on July 4th and was one of nearly two dozen fires triggered by lightning strikes.

Another 1,369 people were evacuated mainly from the Hwy 395 corridor, bringing the total number of people evacuated from the Tamarack Fire to 2,439.

Firefighters on the ground and in airplanes will face exceptionally difficult weather and fuel conditions on Friday. Temperatures were forecast at 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

The fire departments assume that the weather will continue to be hot, dry and unstable. The minimum humidity is 15-20% and on Friday afternoons and evenings, southwest winds of 10-15 miles per hour with gusts of up to 40 miles per hour are forecast along the ridges.

Terrain winds were expected for most of the day, with the exception of increasing northwest winds in the late afternoon and evening. Additionally, there is a chance that thunderstorms will return over the weekend and likely by early next week.

BEATTY, Oregon (CBS SF / AP) – Winds gusting up to 30 mph (30 mph) lashed through the Bootleg Fire zone on Monday, forcing firefighters to retreat to safety as they battled a massive fire that broke out in Fremont- Winema has grown to more than 343,755 hectares National Forest.

The National Meteorological Service issued a red flag warning for the region until 8 p.m. on Monday. However, forecasters said the same condition will apply from 2pm to 8pm on Tuesday.

CONTINUE READING: UPDATE: PG&E blown power line fuses may be connected to Dixie Fire; Wildfire doubles almost overnight

US Forest Service: About Bootleg Fire, Oregon

“Given the atmospheric instability, it will be interesting to see how big a pyrocumulus builds up over the bootleg fire,” said forecasters on Monday afternoon. “There are three different clouds of smoke burning over this fire, and all of them are showing small pyrocumulus clouds at this point. The concern here is whether a thunderstorm will eventually form over the heated plume of smoke. In any case, isolated storms are predicted east of the fire. “

Pyrocumulus clouds, heated by embers and overheated air, create their own erratic weather systems. The embers express themselves, light point fires in the tinder-dry bushes and in the trees and accelerate the spread of the fire. The cloud can also trigger firenados – fast-moving, terrifying columns of fire and embers.

Officials of the US Forest Service described the fire conditions on Monday as “extreme, crowning, running, spotty … point fires that quickly show extreme fire behavior with a very high proportion of ignition”.

ALSO READ: Tamarack fire evacuation orders expanded; Rain could trigger mudslides in the area

At one point during the nightly firefight, winds whipped the fire into a terrifying wall of flames.

“I spoke to our sales representative some time ago,” said operations chief John Flannagan during his briefing on Monday afternoon. “He said it (the fire) went over there pretty much like a hurricane, tore trees out of the ground and tossed them (the trees) around. Pretty impressive fire behavior. “

The fire has grown to 476 square miles and burns 300 miles southeast of Portland in and around the Fremont-Winema National Forest, which is a vast expanse of ancient forest, lakes, and nature reserves.

CONTINUE READING: Stock market collapses amid growing delta fears of COVID

It is one of the most remote areas on the west coast with few roads.

If the fire were in densely populated parts of Northern California – like the Lightning Complex Fires in the San Francisco Bay Area last year – “it would have destroyed thousands of homes by now,” said James Johnston, a researcher at Oregon State University’s College of Forestry of the historic Studied forest fires. “But there is a fire in one of the more remote areas of the lower 48 states. It’s not the Bay Area out there. “

ALSO READ: PG&E Blown power line fuses can be associated with Dixie Fire; Wildfire doubles almost overnight

At least 2,000 houses were evacuated at some point during the fire and another 5,000 were threatened. At least 70 houses and more than 100 outbuildings went up in flames. Thick smoke is choking the area, where residents and wildlife have been battling drought and extreme heat for months. Nobody died.

It is small unincorporated communities like Paisley and Long Creek – both with fewer than 250 residents – and scattered homesteads that are currently in the crosshairs of the fire.

“The bootleg fire threatens ranch homes that are in quite remote areas,” said Johnston. “There are no suburbs in this area.”

But the flame is also getting closer and closer to merging with the much smaller Logg Fire.

Unfortunately, both fires are advancing towards Path 66 – an important electrical line corridor that connects California’s grid to power generators in the northwest. The corridor is exactly in the middle where the flames would converge.

The area of the Santa Lucia Range, the mountains of San Benito County, is warned from Sunday 11 a.m. to Monday 5 p.m.

The National Weather Service warns that dry thunderstorms and gust runoff can lead to wildfires that can spread quickly.

It is worth it that the euro is the greatest threat to the mountain thunder on Monday afternoon.
On Thursday, the National Weather Service warned areas of potential thunderstorms that could bring potential dry thunderstorms to the area.

British Columbia skyscraper faults hit the area from the northwest with a garment of energy as moisture in the middle of the rise travels over the Central Coast and Bay Area, according to the Meteorological Department. This can lead to thunderstorms and dry thunderstorms.

Dry thunderstorms are unlikely, but forest fires can occur if they occur near dry bushes across the area.

Weather services do not expect conditions to cause similar fires. Lightning complex fire It struck the Bay Area in August 2020.

These fires burned hundreds of thousands of acres, destroyed homes and killed at least six people.

CAL FIRE announced on Sunday that the entire unit in the Bay Area had been staffed up, taking into account the expected weather conditions.

SAN RAFAEL (KPIX) – Authorities began clearing a North Bay homeless camp located under a San Rafael freeway overpass late Monday morning.

Both Caltrans and city officials said they had no choice but to force those living there without shelter to flee.

CONTINUE READING: UPDATE: San Francisco police arrested suspects on June 10th Muni Stebbing

The entire eviction process will take hours. Crews arrived late morning to begin cleaning up the tents and huts under the US Highway 101 flyover at the intersection of Fourth and Heatherton near downtown San Rafael.

People who lived in tents and cars had assembled an entire neighborhood made up mostly of looted objects. They called the dismantling of the camp a major systematic failure.

“This place was a good place of healing and peace for the people,” said camp resident Christian Gift.

After the Caltrans crews started hauling items and clearing the warehouse, the people who lived here said the workers could destroy their homes, but it wouldn’t destroy their mood.

In all of California, housing is only available for about 30% of the homeless.

“It is devastating when your community is torn apart; what you built, what you could bring together and merge, and then the state comes and tears it to pieces, ”said Robbie Powelson of the Marin County Homeless Union.

San Rafael officials say local and state leaders have worked hard for the past five years to end chronic homelessness by providing services and support. This particular camp on state property under Highway 101 has grown significantly since the pandemic began. The city says it just got too big.

“The reason there are so many people under the viaduct is because when people go to San Rafael and try to pitch a tent, the SRPD snatched their tents from people,” explained Powelson.

Caltrans says police and fire calls in the area of the camp have doubled, including calls for violent crime and theft.

Caltrans told KPIX that it had worked with the city and county to help unoccupied residents move into permanent housing or housing.
