San Francisco Fleet Week is unique because it features a disaster response joint training exercise designed to train military forces and local, county, state and federal government agencies to work together to respond to natural and man-made disasters, such as earthquakes, wildfires and industrial accidents. During her keynote address at the fleet week’s Senior Leader Symposium, Ms. Berger spoke to senior leaders in the federal, state and local emergency management field and highlighted the DON’s recently-released Climate Action 2030 strategy, which sets the course for the Navy and Marine Corps to build climate resilience and reduce the climate threat while partnering with communities to tackle shared challenges.

“Changes in global climate and other threats like pandemics are increasingly challenging our Naval forces, platforms, infrastructure and supporting communities, and intensifying conflict and humanitarian disasters around the world,” said Ms. Berger. “A more volatile world calls on the United States Navy and Marine Corps, increasing demands on our forces at home and overseas, while simultaneously impacting our capacity to respond to those demands.”

The Navy has a long history of working closely with communities in California to make Navy and Marine Corps installations climate-ready. Last year, the DON and the California Energy Commission renewed a Memorandum of Understanding to streamline collaboration and accelerate initiatives for energy and water-related projects. In September 2022, the Navy launched a first-of-its-kind partnership with the Port of San Diego to participate in California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard program, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and advance energy resilience investments in San Diego.

“We are making significant strides in partnership with California and worldwide in ensuring the DON is resilient in the face of climate change, working hand in hand with local communities and industry,” said Ms. Berger. “Recent partnerships with the California Energy Commission and Port of San Diego are critical to our climate work in the region and supports our efforts by building resilience to climate impacts and taking decisive action to reduce the climate threat.”

San Francisco Fleet Week offers the public an opportunity to take a tour of the ships and interact with service members as they showcase their ships’, units’, and services’ capabilities. It also gives the public a chance to gain a better understanding of how the sea services support the national defense of the United States and protect freedom of the seas.

The popular Fleet Week flight show and boat parade are back live and in person after the post-pandemic celebration went live in 2020. Expect the official viewing areas around Fisherman’s Wharf and on Marina Green to be quite large on Sunday October 3rd through October 11th.

For many indoor activities and crowded outdoor events, specific guidelines apply to vaccinations and / or requirements for negative test evidence. Please check Fleetweeksf.org and specific venues for the latest updates and announcements.

What is San Francisco Fleet Week?

Founded in 1981 by then Mayor Dianne Feinstein, San Francisco Fleet Week is the largest celebration in the country for the US armed forces, especially the Navy and Coast Guard.

Every October – coinciding with the Italian Heritage Weekend and overlapping with the city’s largest free outdoor music festival, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass (celebrated online in October) – locals and visitors alike visit Embarcadero, Marina Green, Fisherman’s Wharf and around around the bay for a parade of ships and weekend air shows (October 8-10). In the four decades since its inception, San Francisco Fleet Week has become a model for similar celebrations across the country.

This year the participants can be there all week and get an insight into the daily life of a seaman on guided boat tours. The USS Hornet Museum in Alameda is also open for tours and guided tours during Fleet Week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Other planned events include an Honor Our Fallen concert with the US Marine Corps 1st Marine Division Band at the Fall Theater; a dog show in Duboce Park with trained K9s to prove their skills; an online retrospective of the veteran’s art show – through 2022 for in-person events – plus plenty of wingsuits, parachutes, and more live airborne entertainment. At Marina Green, participants can visit the Humanitarian Aid Village / STEM Education Center and learn how the military responds to disasters.

What’s the mood?

Fleet Week brings out people of all ages who want to honor soldiers in uniform and those who come mainly to see the planes and naval ships in action. On board ship tours, people may have the option of holding portable rocket launchers, aiming howitzers, and even cranking a mortar into firing position. Children can be seen on their parents’ shoulders, marveling at the aerial photographs, while others lie on blankets in the fields of Marina Green or stroll along the paths on the bridges of San Francisco.

For those with pets, it is a good idea to leave them at home if they don’t like loud noises.

Where is it?

Most of the official Fleet Week events take place along the Marina and Embarcadero, with a few other stops in town. The K9 Heroes dog show will take place on October 9th at 10am in Duboce Park. Box seats and VIP seats for the air show and the boat parade are available online.

For the weekend air shows, get to Marina Green Park early to find the best seating. Twin Peaks, Pier 39, and Crissy Field also offer great views. Viewing is free. Premium seats are available for purchase.

How do I get there?

Officials recommend public transportation, especially for the events that draw the most crowds.

Muni lines 8, 28 and 47 take passengers to the Marina, North Beach and Embarcadero areas. Check the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency for updated train schedules.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) – From the marina to the mission district, Fleet Week celebrations hit the streets of San Francisco on Friday.

“It’s my birthday and we’ve been coming since 1982,” said Pam Selvig from San Anselmo.

For 39 years, Fleet Week has been a group birthday party for Pam and her friends. The same group, the same Crissy Field bench, and the same picnic.

“Suddenly I looked at my suitcase and said: ‘Yes!’ The food and liquor will all fit back and forth and it has roles. We’re good, “said Diane Peck, who arranges the food and drink portions for the party.

And then there is the sound. Not the planes … the screams of the ladies.

“I’m definitely the loudest screamer,” said Pam.

But Montara resident Mary Pat Dempsey stated that they were screaming on purpose.

“The pilots look for us every year, they wave to us. I tell you, they look and wave and we see them!”

VIDEO: Fleet Week + Giants / Dodgers + Warriors = Millions of Dollars for San Francisco

But last year the pandemic interrupted their party, so this year’s fly-bys came with some extra emotion.

“I got the chills, I just wanted to cry because I feel so patriotic and I don’t know, it moves, it moves,” said Carrie Paulus from Danville.

Busy too – bars in San Francisco.

“Lots of drinks, lots of Navy boys will be with us, the Giants,” said Nick Hallmark from San Francisco, who was out with friends in Cow Hollow.

“Everyone is on the move, there is just good energy in the city today,” said Trisha Costa from San Francisco.

“We moved into quarantine last year, so this is our first real fleet week experience,” said Michael Jankiewicz. As for the nozzle noise, he says, “I honestly mean it’s scary!”

In the Mission District, the First Marine Division Band marched down Valencia Street.

Staff Sergeant Eric Gonzales is in town from Camp Pendleton. “The spirit of San Francisco is captured through our engagements. You meet wild people, you meet cool people, I made long-term friends during these fleet weeks too. It’s just great to be a member of San Francisco for six days that we’re here. “

“It’s so great! To be honest, I haven’t felt so much pride in our country for a long time, ”said Manny Yekutial, the owner’s Manny restaurant – a bourgeois meeting place. Manny has hosted the Marines and stated that it will be the first time a Fleet Week event will be moved away from the water front to the mission.

“This is the beating heart of San Francisco. It’s so important that the people in this church and everyone here actually hear this band. That is why I am so glad that you came here and that you should come to the mission every year! “

And it has only just begun! The celebrations last until the weekend.
