The future king of Britain rolled into San Francisco 16 years ago on a charm offensive to introduce America to his new bride, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. And between all the pomp, they wound up hanging out with some of the unfanciest people in town — a batch of chronically homeless folks who’d just gotten housed, the doctors and case managers helping them heal, and me.

We were all utterly charmed.

Then-Prince Charles and his wife were not some stuck-up royals sleepwalking through an obligatory. Or at least that’s how those of us who there remember his November 2005 stop at the Empress Hotel, then hailed as a national model of counseling-heavy supportive housing for the most severely disabled street people.

I recall shaking the hand of a polite, gentle-seeming man now known as King Charles III and his equally polite wife and chatting with them about the homelessness crisis in this, one of the loveliest cities in America. I then watched the couple be equally gracious with the newly housed folks and the staffers who were explaining the workings of the rehabbed ancient hotel to them.

Surrounded by San Francisco city officials and security, then Prince Charles, left, and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, walk down the 5th floor corridor of the Empress Hotel on the way for a visit to a fomerly homeless person’s room.

Brant Ward/The Chronicle 2005

The 90-room Empress, then the flagship of San Francisco’s pioneering medically intensive Direct Access to Housing program, is in the decidedly unposh Tenderloin, but these two looked as if they felt right at home. Gavin Newsom was mayor, and he’d decided to show it off as an example of his homeless-housing push, which had just reduced the street population by 28%. What many people didn’t know is that Charles had been on the same sort of crusade himself.

By the time he visited the year-old Empress operation, Charles had already visited dozens of homeless programs around the world and helped create Britain’s “Rough Sleepers Initiative,” which had reduced the nation’s chronically homeless population by two-thirds over the previous five years . He wanted to analyze San Francisco’s model of building intensive support services into the housing — which isn’t quite as necessary in Britain, where they have a national health system and officially guaranteed housing for the poor, but still had value for its breadth of counseling and medical resources right there in the complex.

A gaggle of us — Newsom, case managers and the like — visited several residents in their rooms, which were so small they were a tight fit for all of us. No problem. The royal two went with the flow. “Oh how nice!” Camilla erupted as she walked into John Panzer’s fifth-floor room. Charles gingerly took a seat on a chair, asking Panzer if that was OK, and the three solemnly discussed the challenges that Panzer had to overcome with drug addiction when he moved into the Empress.

“Gee, they really listen to you,” Panzer marveled when the royals moved on to another room. “I think they know what I’m talking about. amazing.”

The flurry of stories we ran in The Chronicle on the royal visit that week included stops at upscale food shops, organic farming operations, rich-people dinners and the like, and noted that Charles’s suit was stitched by a Saville Row tailor and Camilla’s coat was by British designer Roy Allen. But as they sat on chairs and beds in those rooms with people struggling with challenges few can imagine, they didn’t wince or check things out before they sat down. They nodded knowingly when the residents described the agony of going cold turkey from dope, and the pain in your belly when you’re starving and trying to sleep on a cold night on a sidewalk with one eye open for danger.

They’d obviously heard plenty like this before.

“Very impressive,” Charles told me after the tour, gazing at me over that long nose of his. “We must always remember that these are our fellow human beings. It does seem a lot of good care is being given here.”

Brant Ward/ The Chronicle 2005

Roberta Goodman was manager of the Empress then — four years later she co-produced a gritty documentary on the hotel with Oscar winner Allie Light — and when we remembered this week about that visit, the words she used to describe the couple were “interested and sincere.” We remembered that nobody asked us to bow, as Brits must, and that the royals met every hand offered to them.

“How often do you have someone representing a monarchy come to visit people who are often just neglected?” Goodman said. In a group discussion with a half-dozen residents, Charles stood up and asked people to describe addiction relapse, and when one man — Anthony, since deceased — went deep into the toxic allure of crack, she remembered the prince’s response the way I did .

“The prince took it in. He absorbed it. He was listening. It was pretty remarkable,” Goodman said.

dr Josh Bamberger, a clinical and family medicine UCSF professor, also remembered the visit with me this week, with a little less rosiness. “They seemed fine,” he said. “But how do you know? They’re pretty schooled on how to do those kinds of things.”

Bamberger’s job that day was to calm down any disruptive residents who might unhinge the visit, and he wound up taking one guy downstairs for a walk after he boiled out of his room yelling, “What the hell’s going on?!”

The doctor chuckled as he recalled seeing the mobs of British press fenced just outside the hotel entrance and snipers on roofs all around them.

“I’m thinking, man, if I stumble, there are so many snipers around here I’m going to get shot,” he said.

My Chronicle homeless beat partner of many years, Brant Ward — now retired — also remembered the prince as “an extremely nice man, not pretentious” — and he’s photographed everyone from royals to superstars of film and sports. What sticks in his craw, though, he told me this week, is the way the British photographers badgered the couple. The memory of the paparazzi hounding Charles’ ex, Princess Diana, literally to death eight years before was still somewhat fresh.

“They’d say, ‘Oh, Prince Charles, could you please put your arm around this person?’ or ‘Camilla, could you smile a little more?’ Ward said. “Those of us in the American press thought that was ridiculous. When they had to pose like that I wouldn’t take a picture — it was a complete setup. I’d wait for the natural shot.

“If I were Charles and Camilla, I would have told them to f— off. Because the thing is, he didn’t need to be posed. He smiled, had kind things to say, wasn’t pompous. I think the Brits will be well served by him as their king.”

Based on my morning with the man and his wife, now known as “Queen Consort,” I’d have to agree with my partner. And with any luck, the homeless people of Britain will feel the same.

Everywhere you look, everywhere you go, there’s a face of someone who needs you… and wants to call you their home.

Fans of the iconic sitcom “Full House,” which famously starred Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen — as well as the late comedian Bob Saget, who passed away unexpectedly in January at age 65 — can now own part of the show’s history.

A San Francisco house that’s one of the city’s rarely available Queen Anne- and Victorian-style “Painted Ladies” — a row of seven properties that appeared on television screens in the show’s intro sequence — has listed for $3.55 million, its listing brokerage told The Post.

The property snoops at the Wall Street Journal first reported the news, adding that the seller — Leah Culver, a senior software engineer at Twitter — is looking to break even. She purchased the Queen Anne house, formerly dressed with a pink exterior, for $3.55 million in January 2020.

Culver lives nearby and bought the 1890s spread, which was in a state of disrepair after the same family had owned it for some six decades, with hopes of a renovation. Two months after her January 2020 purchase came the stateside outbreak of COVID-19 — and the pandemic reportedly caused delays in securing permits for the work, which the Journal has not yet started. However, Culver told the Journal that she has the permits needed from the planning department, and anticipates to receive the same from the building department this summer. Simply put: She’s selling because she no longer has the time required to see the renovation through.

In a message to The Post, the brokerage added that the sale includes approved permits from David Armor Architecture to restore the two-unit structure, at 714 Steiner St., to “its former glory.” That includes the creation of a large upper unit with five bedrooms, three full bathrooms and a powder room that’s roughly 3,000 square feet in size with a three-level floorplate. The lower level will have a two-bedroom, one-bathroom unit that’s 845 square feet with its own entrance and laundry—and could be used as a guest suite or income-producing property. (The home was split into two units in 1960.)

“I really want to find a buyer who cares about San Francisco, and this property and the location,” Culver, who has an Instagram account for the home, @pinkpaintedlady, which boasts 19,500 followers, told the Journal.

Living in the city by the bay has traditionally come with a heavy cost, and now is no different. The Journal notes that the market has low supply and high demand. And in the first quarter of 2022, median sales climbed to $1.87 million — a 21% increase from the $1.55 million tallied during the same period a year earlier.

For those who can pay the price, the home delivers a nice dose of history. All seven homes, otherwise known as the “Seven Sisters,” were built by a man named Matthew Kavanagh between 1892 and 1895. Born in Ireland, Kavanagh immigrated to America in 1869, and began with his own home, at 722 Steiner St., then completed the others. This listed home, at No. 714, which was completed in 1895.

Features inside No. 714 include views of Alamo Square’s hills from oversize bay windows on all three levels. The kitchen, at the rear of the home, looks to the dome of City Hall, while the second and third floors look to San Francisco’s downtown skyline.

The listing images indeed show a home in a state of disrepair — but look past them to see a spindled staircase, hardwood floors, wood-framed windows, moldings, high ceilings and the change to have a large kitchen.

Nina Hatvany, of Compass, reps the listing.

No, the 1883 San Francisco Victorian forever immortalized for its place in the “Full House” (and its Netflix reboot “Fuller House”) is not on the market for $37 million.

A Zillow spokesperson confirmed to SFGATE on Wednesday morning that the listing was fraudulent and has been taken down less than 24 hours after SFGATE first reached out to the real estate listing platform.

“Our teams use a number of different tools to prevent inappropriate content from publishing in the first place, but if a listing is found to be fraudulent after it’s posted, our team takes steps to remove it,” a Zillow spokesperson told SFGATE in an emailed statements. “In this case, we discovered a ‘For Sale By Owner’ listing was illegitimate after it was posted, and have since taken it down. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.”

But that wasn’t before the listing received credulous writeups by KRON and KGO — and the news of the alleged sale spread everywhere from Los Angeles to Myrtle Beach, Florida.

Some red flags emerged in the listing, which was apparently posted Monday.

First, the home was listed on Zillow for nearly seven times the amount it last sold for.

In October 2020, the house sold for $5.3 million — a few thousand dollars less than the five-bedroom was initially listed for. Before that, it was owned by “Full House” creator Jeff Franklin with the intent of renovating the interior to resemble the “Full House” set. This plan was met with opposition from neighbors. Its current estimated value by Zillow, or “Zestimate,” is $6.5 million.

Second, details of the legendary home were sparse — with nary a mention of its place in pop culture history nor even Bob Saget’s death, which resulted in many fans visiting the home earlier this year. (It also got the year the home was built wrong by a century.)

Perhaps the most damning of all, the phone number posted on the listing appeared to be disconnected after SFGATE made multiple calls.

So, if you were feeling lost out there with this wildly overpriced listing — even for San Francisco — you’re not alone. But you can rest assured that this Victorian will stay with its current owner for now.

A San Francisco shoplifter was filmed filling a bag with stolen goods behind the counter of a Walgreens store as staff stood helplessly and watched.

The heist took place on Tuesday at a Walgreens in the Richmond area of the city, and saw the brazen shoplifter hurl bananas and cookies at one man who confronted him.

It is the latest in a long line of shocking shoplifting outrages to hit the famously-liberal Bay Area.

San Francisco and its Bay Area neighbors have been hit hard by a wave of property crimes and smash-and-grab robberies since the start of the pandemic. That has forced multiple branches of Walgreens to close in a bid to stem their theft-related losses amid mounting criticism of soft-on-crime DAs many say are enabling the widespread criminality.

Cellphone video captured by professional photographer Nicholas Stennet shows a man dressed in all black removing items from shelves behind the counter of the San Francisco drug store with utter disregard for two store workers standing right next to him.

One of the employees is on the phone with a 911 dispatcher, reporting a robbery in progress.

At the beginning of the clip, the brazen shoplifter can be seen behind the counter stuffing some of the Walgreens’ most valuable items into a huge bag, while helpless staff look on

Moments later, he was confronted by a male shopper, pictured left, but didn’t take kindly to the check on his behavior…

‘We have this person that is… taking everything from the counter,’ the woman says. ‘Can you send the cops? Can you send them right away, please?’

The looter, meanwhile, calmly moves to a different section of the counter and continues to fill a plastic bag with a variety of goods, including COVID tests, batteries and electronics, according to one eyewitness.

After ransacking the shelves to his heart’s content, the criminal emerges from behind the counter and makes it for the exit.

When a bystander makes an attempt to stand up to him, the audacious bandit grabs a bunch of bananas from a basket and forcefully hurls them at the man, who picks up some of the fruit and lobs them back at the attacker.

…and ended up hurling bananas at the would-be Good Samaritan, who then responded in kind

The shoplifter was evidently annoyed by the have-a-go hero’s decision to stand up to him, and returned to hurl nuts and candy at the unfortunate man

Visibly annoyed by such a hostile reception, the shoplifter grabs packets of chips Ahoy! from a nearby shelf and pelts the Good Samaritan with them, before storming out of he store and triggering the alarm on his way out.

Drug store chains like Walgreens and CVS have become attractive and easy targets for shoplifters, leading to numerous store closures in the Bay Area. In the area’s largest city, San Francisco, low-level offenses, such as retail thefts, have been effectively de-criminalized under the leadership of progressive District Attorney Chesa Boudin.

Boudin, who in a recent interview with the New York Times argued that tough-on-crime policies do not work and blamed the police for the San Francisco’s soaring crime rates, is facing a recall vote on June 7.

Liberal San Francisco DA Chesa Boudin, whose soft-on-crime policies have been blamed for San Francisco’s soaring crime rates, is facing a recall vote in June

Roving gangs of criminals have been carrying out brazen smash-and-grab robberies, targeting high-end stores like Louis Vuitton and Burberry, but also national chains like Walgreens and CVS.

Walgreens said last year that retail theft in San Francisco was five times the chain average and security costs were 46 times the chain average, reported San Francisco Chronicle.

According to the latest available crime data, grand larceny rates in California’s liberal bastion were up 19 per cent in late February, compared with the same period last year.

California Gov Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, has vowed to crack down on gangs of retail thieves, despite a controversial 2014 law – Proposition 47 – that barred prosecutors from charging suspected shoplifters accused of stealing less than $950 worth of merchandise with felonies.

San Francisco continues to set new COVID-19 case records, and the number of people in the hospital with COVID-19 has now surpassed the summer’s delta-variant-driven wave. However, it’s increasingly clear those hospitalization figures are a poor metric for understanding how many patients are seriously ill with the disease.

These cases of “incidental COVID” — patients who are in the hospital for other reasons and happen to test positive for COVID-19 — have always existed, and many public health departments still count these cases as “COVID hospitalizations.” But as the omicron variant has spread through the Bay Area like wildfire, often causing asymptomatic or mild illness, some experts are arguing that there’s far too big a gap between official hospitalization numbers and the true burden of the virus.

dr Jeanne Noble, the head of UCSF’s emergency room COVID-19 response, told SFGATE that 70% of COVID-19-positive patients at UCSF were there for reasons other than COVID-19. Despite that, the hospital has been including those patients when it sends reports to the state about COVID-19 hospitalizations. The state then sends that data to the counties, supposedly to inform them about how at-risk their communities are from the disease.

“The crisis from the Omicron peak is not generated by serious COVID illness in regions with highly vaxxed populations,” Noble wrote in an email to SFGATE. “The crisis we are suffering in the Bay Area is largely driven by disruptive COVID policies that encourage asymptomatic testing and subsequent quarantines. … The vast majority of COVID-plus patients I take care of need no medical care and are quickly discharged home with reassurance. “

Hospitalizations across the city are increasing, as you can see in the first chart below. But the second chart — which shows hospitalizations and intensive care unit hospitalizations — supports the claim that hospitalizations are being over-counted.

Deaths from COVID-19 tend to lag 21 days behind hospitalizations. As you can see in the graphs above, there’s just a one to three day lag time between hospitalizations and ICU hospitalizations, meaning those trends can be seen much earlier.

Marin County Health Officer Dr. Matt Wills recently told SFGATE that he believes the ICU count is a reliable metric of how many people are currently sick with COVID-19. When he looked for incidental positives in the official case counts last week, he found that patients in a psychiatric ward, pregnant women in obstetric units and an individual undergoing orthopedic surgery had all been included in official case counts, despite not needing significant medical care related to the virus. At the time, just one of the 19 patients listed under COVID-19 hospitalizations required intensive care. “That ratio has never been so small,” Wills said.

In fact, San Francisco is recording fewer COVID-19 ICU admissions than during either of the previous two waves, despite record numbers of people testing positive for the virus every day, both inside the hospitals and out. In the last week, about 145 people in hospitals have tested positive for COVID-19 daily and 25 total people were admitted to the ICU with COVID-19. During the summer delta wave, the city saw 125 COVID-19 hospitalizations at the peak — but nearly 40 people with the virus were landing in intensive care. When hospitalizations last winter were similar to today’s average, COVID-19 ICU admissions hit 39 a day.

UCSF experts have repeatedly told SFGATE that given the astronomically high cases in the city, hospitalization numbers would be significantly higher if this surge were like past waves. Fortunately, it seems that San Francisco’s high vaccination rate (81% of residents are fully vaccinated) and the fact that the omicron variant causes more mild illness than previous strains are blunting the impact on hospitals.

“It’s just less severe,” epidemiologist Dr. George Rutherford said of omicron. “Unless we’re ridiculously wrong, things are different now.”

The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office unveiled a new section of its website on Friday that reveals a broad range of statistics regarding how often District Attorney Chesa Boudin and his staff file criminal charges. The announcement comes as Boudin continues to face harsh criticism from city leaders and even his own former prosecutors, who believe the latest release of data does little to exonerate Boudin’s office from what they describe as failing and dangerous polices.

According to Boudin’s office, the new digital dashboards provide current and historical data regarding the number of arrests and prosecutions for a wide range of crimes.

New digital dashboards, posted on the District Attorney’s Office website, reveal prosecution rates for a range of crimes.

Members of the public will be able to easily follow San Francisco crime data over time, the number of incidents and the arrest and prosecution rates for more than 60 types of incidents from 2011 to present.

Sara Yousuf, District Attorney’s Office Deputy Director of Communications

“Members of the public will be able to easily follow San Francisco crime data over time, the number of incidents and the arrest and prosecution rates for more than 60 types of incidents from 2011 to present,” wrote Sara Yousuf, Deputy Director of Communications for the District Attorney, who issued a statement on behalf of the office announcing the new feature. The District Attorney’s Office said the dashboards are intended to help residents see the relationship between incidents, arrests, and prosecutions.

Overall Prosecution Rate in SF Remains Largely the Same Under Boudin

According to the new dashboards, Boudin’s overall prosecution rate mirrors that of his predecessor, now current Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon. Out of all the arrests made by the city’s police department this year, Boudin’s office filed charges about 56 percent of the time, according to the office’s website.

“Simply providing the charging percentage doesn’t capture the full scope of the problem,” said Brooke Jenkins, a former assistant district attorney in Boudin’s office. Jenkins, who resigned last month and joined the effort to recall Boudin, spoke to the Investigative Unit shortly after the release of Boudin’s new dashboards, and voiced skepticism about using the data to draw any sort of concrete conclusions about Boudin’s performance.

Prosecutors Brooke Jenkins and Don Du Bain tell the Investigative Unit they have quit their jobs at the San Francisco District Attorney’s office and joined the effort to recall their former boss, Chesa Boudin. Bigad Shaban reports.

Former SF Prosecutors Accuse DA of Making City More Dangerous

Last month, in her first on-camera interview following her resignation, Jenkins accused Boudin of making San Francisco more dangerous by lessening criminal charges for violent offenders and, at times, failing to prosecute them at all.

“The fact that killers may go free just doesn’t sit very well with me,” Jenkins told the Investigative Unit in October.

While Boudin declined to be interviewed regarding the accusations, his office flatly denied the allegations, calling them “politically motivated.”

3) Prosecutor Don du Bain says he considers District Attorney Chesa Boudin a friend, but strongly believes he needs to be recalled.

“I’ve seen decisions made in this office … since Chesa took over, that shocked my conscience, and I’ve been a prosecutor for 30 years.”

— Bigad Shaban (@BigadShaban) October 24, 2021

Longtime prosecutor Don du Bain, who also resigned from the District Attorney’s Office last month, joined Jenkins in voicing doubt about the possibility of gaining any legitimate insight from the newly released data.

He says it’s not enough for the public to know whether charges were filed. He argues it’s crucial to know what the exact charges were and whether those were the actual charges that remained in place when the case was ultimately resolved. Just because charges were filed in a case, he says, doesn’t mean those are the charges that ultimately stick.

#EXCLUSIVE:
1) Two San Francisco prosecutors just quit and tell us they’ve joined the effort to oust their former boss, District Attorney Chesa Boudin.

In their first tv interviews, they explain why they believe Boudin is making the city more dangerous. https://t.co/OJabSfIxHS

— Bigad Shaban (@BigadShaban) October 24, 2021

We are undercharging cases and sometimes not charging them at all.

Don du Bain, longtime prosecutor and former assistant district attorney in San Francisco

“There is a vast discrepancy between what a defendant is charged with versus what he ultimately pleads guilty to or was convicted of,” he said. “We are undercharging cases and sometimes not charging them at all.”

The NBC Bay Area Investigative Unit recently reported on a man who was initially charged in San Francisco with assault with a deadly weapon, child endangerment, and several other charges as part of a domestic violence case. The District Attorney’s Office, however, ultimately allowed the defendant to plead to a misdemeanor for vandalism, which also included one year of domestic violence counseling and 3 years of probation.

While Boudin’s overall charging rate hasn’t veered greatly from the city’s rates over the past decade, his willingness to prosecute does differ when focusing on certain types of crimes. Lower-level offenses, for example, such as “disturbing the peace” and “disorderly conduct,” which may include loitering, begging, and being drunk in public, reflect a smaller charging rate in Boudin’s administration. According to the District Attorney’s Office website, Boudin’s staff only files new charges in those types of cases about 10 percent of the time. In the year prior to Boudin taking office, the charging rate was more than twice as high.

In a statement, Boudin said the new online features reflect his devotion to transparency.

My office is committed to transparency and data-driven policies and these new dashboards promote increased public access to criminal justice data.

District Attorney Chesa Boudin

“My office is committed to transparency and data-driven policies and these new dashboards promote increased public access to criminal justice data,” he wrote. “I commend the hard work of our data team in creating these new, straightforward dashboards to increase transparency and information access and we are proud to share them with the public.”

The announcement of the new website comes in the midst of an effort to recall Boudin. His opponents recently submitted more than 83,000 signatures to force him into a recall election next June. San Francisco’s Department of Elections must still certify the signatures, but organizers handed in about 32,000 more signatures than they need to get the recall question onto the ballot.

Supervisor Catherine Stefani, who represents San Francisco’s Marina district, said the new dashboards fall short of offering full transparency in how Boudin’s office prosecutes violent crime.

“It certainly doesn’t tell the big picture,” she said. “You have to provide what is happening on the back end.”

It certainly doesn’t tell the full story.

San Francisco Supervisor Catherine Stefani, referring to prosecution statistics just released by the District Attorney’s Office

9) @SupStefani hopes her legislation forces the DA’s Office to increase transparency. She says San Franciscans deserve to know how often violent offenders are set free.

Proposed Law Would Require DA, Police Dept. to Regularly Disclose Details About Prosecutions and Arrests Involving Violent Offenders

Stefani says the public deserves to know how cases are ultimately resolved and not just how they are originally charged, which can often be totally different.

On Tuesday, San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors is expected to vote on an ordinance Stefani authored, which would force the District Attorney’s Office and police department to issue quarterly reports, detailing how often domestic violence offenders are arrested and prosecuted. The District Attorney’s Office would also be required to note exactly what kinds of sentences are handed down for each of those cases.

San Francisco Supervisor Catherine Stefani is trying to force District Attorney Chesa Boudin to release details about how his office prosecutes some of the city’s most violent offenders. Bigad Shaban reports.

In a letter sent to lawmakers last week, Boudin noted “key areas of concern” regarding “limitations of the proposed reporting requirements.”

“The requested statistics outlined in the ordinance overlook the wide array of victim services and advocacy that my office provides to survivors of domestic violence, irrespective of whether a criminal case is being pursued,” Boudin wrote. “These services include but are not limited to, assistance applying for civil protective orders, crisis support services and counseling, guidance to navigate the criminal justice system, referrals to local resources and services, support at court hearings, and a wide variety of both short term and ongoing support.”

The San Francisco Police Department voiced support for the legislation during a committee hearing on the ordinance last week.

Stefani tells the Investigative Unit she’s confident her legislation will pass.

“I know I have the six votes,” she said.

If approved, the new reporting requirements would go into effect during the first quarter of 2022.

“If you’re not explaining what is happening after the charges, you’re not getting the full picture of what is happening,” Stefani said. “It certainly doesn’t tell the full story.”

The theme song of hit ABC sitcom Full House, which aired from 1987 to 1995, tells us, “Everywhere you look, there’s a heart, a hand to hold on to.” Lately, it seems however, there is bad news everywhere you look, such as the sudden and unexpected death on January 9th of Bob Saget, who played Danny Tanner on the popular show. As reports of his death circulated on social media, fans, friends and former co-stars all expressed their sadness and shock at the devastating loss.

Saget is famous for a plethora of film roles, big and small (including the voice of adult Ted Mosby in How I Met Your Mother), as well as a rather racy stand-up routine. Saget will undoubtedly be best remembered as the Tanner family’s good-natured patriarch. Incredibly, although the role was conceived for him, he wasn’t the first actor to be cast as the beloved TV dad. Full House creator and executive producer Jeff Franklin said on Instagram: “I wrote the role of Danny Tanner for my friend Bob Saget. The character was friendly, genuine, neurotic, a little nerdy, a hugger with a heart of gold, and endearingly funny. That was Bob.” But when it came time to film the pilot in early 1987, scheduling conflicts prevented the comedian from being signed. So actor John Posey was hired instead. The pilot (which never aired but parts of it can be viewed on YouTube) was then filmed, bought around and eventually acquired by ABC. As fate would have it, Saget’s schedule had opened up by this point, leading to the network launching Posey, replacing him with Bob, and reshooting the pilot. The rest is TV history!

A “Full House” role secured from the start? The handsome San Francisco Victorian who portrayed the Tanner residence in the series. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, Franklin “handpicked” the three-story Italian-style property in early 1987 “after a site manager visited San Francisco to select options.” He told the outlet: “I wanted the family to live in one of those classic Victorian houses. For some reason I noticed this. There were many candidates but this was the winner.”

Although it’s often erroneously reported that the Tanners reside in one of SF’s famous Painted Ladies, these structures only appear in the show’s opening credits as family picnics in nearby Alamo Square. The actual apartment featured on the show is about a mile away at 1709 Broderick St. in Lower Pacific Heights. (Please remember this is a private home. Do not enter or harass residents or property in any way.)

Over the years, the idyllic abode has blossomed into a virtual icon that’s as synonymous with “Full House” as Saget himself, so it’s not surprising that fans now go there to commemorate the comedian, and flowers, notes and even bread and beer left on the sidewalk in front.

The quaint residence appeared regularly on footage of the Tanners’ home throughout the eight seasons of “Full House.” Interestingly, however, the production team only took pictures of it once, in early 1987 when “Full House” was in pre-production. The Hollywood Reporter notes that the crew “filmed a bunch of shots of the house – everything from lights on, lights off, day and night – so they would have options to move on.” So much footage was shot that Franklin recalled, “We didn’t have to go back there until a few years later, but by that point the owner must have been upset with the fans passing by and they weren’t in a cooperative mood.” The 1987 images were hence used throughout the show’s run and also in the 2016 reboot of Fuller House. As Franklin said, “Our audiences have watched the same cars drive past this house for 29 years.” However, fans never seemed to mind.

The beautiful property, which is pretty much the quintessential San Francisco Victorian style, was originally designed by architect Charles Lewis Hinkel way back in 1883. After recent renovations, the place actually has four bedrooms and four bathrooms on a spacious (San Francisco specific) 3,728 square meters.

(Michael Rankine)

When the residence launched in 2016, in a highly unusual twist, it was acquired by none other than Franklin, who secured it in a $4 million deal. Although the producer originally hoped to remodel the interior to look like the Full House sets (a near-impossible feat, as the team behind A Very Brady Renovation will tell you), the neighbors, Those long tired of the place’s tourist attraction status weren’t too keen on the idea and thwarted his plans. (How rude, right?) So Franklin set about renovating and flipping the property, with architect Richard Landry at the helm. As evidenced by the pre-renovation photos, this was a major job, opening up the floor plan and modernizing the fixtures. The revamped Victorian building was finally dumped in October 2020 for a cool $5.35 million, with the listing calling it “an ethereal residence that offers comfort, class and opulent finishes.”

Though Landry has been dubbed the “king of the tacky mega-villa” (Oh, Mylanta!), the architect managed to retain many of the property’s original features, such as the Corinthian columns, large bay windows, and wide crown moldings. More modern amenities include skylights, marble-fronted fireplaces, and wide hardwood floors.

On “Full House” only the front of the house appeared. The interior of the Tanner residence and the adjacent backyard were designed by Art Director Lynn Griffin, first on Stage 28 at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, where the show’s first six seasons were filmed, and then on Stage 24 at Warner Bros Studio in Burbank, where production has moved for the last two seasons. The last phase was also used for the reboot of “Fuller House” as well as for seasons two to ten of the legendary series “Friends”.

Although the Tanner home set differs markedly in design from the actual residence, the decorative archways framing the bay windows throughout are an obvious carryover.

“Full House” fans hoping to see the pad in person but unwilling to brave the unfriendly neighbors shouldn’t sell their dreams now that a replica of the residence is now at the Warner Bros. studio. Built to promote Fuller House, the facade is a popular stop on two-hour tours of the site, which are offered several times a day. There, fans can snap photos, pose for selfies on the stairs, and even say a private thank you to Saget for the years of laughs while gazing at the familiar red front door.
