Qualia Labs’ Nate Baker with 50 Fremont St (Todd Johnson, iStock, LinkedIn)

A digital real estate services firm based in San Francisco has listed its 39,0000-square-foot headquarters for sublease.

Online platform Qualia Labs plans to offload all of its space in the 43-story Salesforce West tower at 50 Fremont St., in the Financial District, the San Francisco Business Times reported.

Three weeks ago, Qualia listed the 37th floor, then added the 36th floor last week, effectively pulling up stakes with nine months in on a three-year lease.

CBRE is marketing the space at close to $70 per square foot, the newspaper reported. The building is owned by Salesforce, which occupies most of its space.

It’s not clear where Qualia is headed. Nate Baker, its founder and CEO, said he was thinking of moving the headquarters to Austin, where the company opened an office five years ago. The company didn’t respond to a request for comment from the Business Times.

Since launching in 2015, Qualia – which streamlines the home-buying process – has grown to over 500 employees. It reached unicorn status in late 2020 after raising $65 million in a Series D funding round that suggested a value of more than $1 billion at the time.

The company’s San Francisco headquarters housed 75 employees, according to CoStar.

According to the sublease brochure, the space provides a newly built open and creative layout featuring 144 desks, eight small meeting rooms, plus a meditation and mother’s room.

The listing adds to San Francisco’s office sublease inventory, which has grown in the last two years as many companies have switched to remote or hybrid workforce arrangements. At the end of the first quarter, there was 8.2 million square feet available on the sublease market, according to CBRE.

The move by Qualia to close its headquarters follows other tech companies that have reevaluated their corporate headquarters needs.

TaskRabbit, a worker-for-hire platform with more than 300 employees, announced this week it would be closing its San Francisco headquarters and all its physical offices to work remotely. Before the pandemic, its corporate office took up nearly 20,000 square feet over three floors.

Now the IKEA-owned firm will pull up stakes from its downsized headquarters of 7,500 square feet at 425 2nd St. in Rincon Hill.

The Qualia relocation also follows recent corporate moves by Ripple, Splunk, Wells Fargo, and the State Bar of California, which mostly downsized to smaller offices in favor of a hybrid office and work-from-home employee model.

Not every company is downsizing in the city––Finix, a payments company, just moved its headquarters into a larger office as other firms trim office space to work from home. The financial tech firm relocated from South Park to a century-old Art Deco building in SoMa.

Millbrae City Council believed it was safe to have a biotech company near the airport and passed a resolution to consider overriding the San Mateo County Airport Land Use Commission of the San Mateo County Airport Land Use Commission, who sided with SFO to raise safety concerns.

San Francisco International Airport officials sent a letter to Millbrae officials back in January expressing concerns about a proposal to allow biotech companies to occupy commercial developments in the area-specific plan for the Millbrae station.

Airport officials alleged that their presence on the flight path of a popular airport could increase the risk for local residents in the event of a plane crash, as biotech companies routinely work with hazardous materials.

“The city should carefully examine the health, safety and well-being of its citizens in the event of an airplane accident,” said the letter signed by Nupur Sinha, acting airport planning director.

In January of this year, the council passed a resolution to overturn C / CAG’s decision that the Millbrae Station Area Specific Plan or the MSASP changes for Biosafety Level 2 Uses in the SFO Airport Land Use Compatibility Plan or ALUCP Safety Zone 2 were inconsistent the transit-oriented development or TOD zone. It also adopted a resolution amending the MSASP to allow these uses.

Biosafety Level 2 includes clinical, diagnostic, educational, and other laboratories that work with medium-risk indigenous pathogens that are already present in the community, such as influenza, HIV, Lyme disease, and salmonella.

“The diseases at this level are diseases that already exist in the environment. This does not mean that no precautions can be taken. And all of this can be worked into the actual plans of the buildings themselves. So it is quite possible to keep things under control, ”said Mayor Ann Schneider.

She is optimistic about the future and eager to see how it will help the city thrive.

“When you’re a company like Biotech, a lot of your employees need to be on site. And that means these employees eat in local restaurants and hopefully shop locally. Diversifying our business premises is good for Millbrae, ”she said.

The city will initiate a 45-day review period by first submitting the letter of intent to the ALUCP and Caltrans Aeronautics departments to review the override. ALUCP and Caltrans have 30 days to respond and then the Council will take final action at a public hearing to override the final results in September.

As the role of the data scientist expands, so does the “Data Lab” product category, with which data science is to be merged with the company installations required for data-driven decisions.

Add a new Data Labs platform from the technology management consultant Kin + Carta to the list, which is intended to meet the more stringent corporate requirements for more “data flow” and accompanying analyzes on recently installed digital platforms.

Kin + Carta publishes a Data Labs platform that is billed as a management hub and can be embedded in consulting and engineering services. In contrast to current Snapshot data science and engineering services, the Chicago-based technology consultant advertises its data laboratory as a provider of integrated real-time data analysis.

The Data Labs platform consists of three pillars: data product strategy and activation; Data management; and data product delivery.

The data lab rollout follows the acquisition of Cascade Labs by Kin + Carta in December 2020. Cascade Labs, based in Portland, Oregon, specializes in data science services, including integration, engineering, and data visualization.

Challenges that data lab providers are facing include creating closer working relationships among data scientists who focus on abstractions and engineering of data pipelines and other platforms designed to aid decision makers. Therefore, the data consultant is pushing for “data as a product”, not only for another software service, but also for a way to “activate” [data] fluently. “

One of the goals is to enable consumers of data to express their results in a kind of lingua franca that can help make business decisions.

Kin + Carta also announced the hiring of Cameron Turner as Vice President of Data Science late last year. Turner is a co-founder of The Data Guild, the San Francisco-based venture studio that specializes in commercializing data science platforms.

“Just as agile software development has changed the way companies deliver digital experiences, the way we think about data as a product is changing the way we all think about data,” said Turner. Ultimately, greater data fluidity between companies would improve data access and analytics, he added.
