SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 17, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Jeremy Empol has joined the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco (FHLBank San Francisco) as senior vice president, public affairs and industry outreach. In this role, Empol will oversee FHLBank San Francisco’s government relations program, including representing the Bank’s interests with Congress, regulators, and financial industry stakeholders.

“We are excited to welcome Jeremy to this important role on our public affairs team,” said Anne Segrest McCulloch, executive vice president and chief legal officer at FHLBank San Francisco. “With his deep experience in the financial services industry and track record of building productive relationships with government and industry, he will be an effective advocate for the common interests of the bank and our over 325 member financial institutions.”

Empol was previously senior vice president of federal government affairs at the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues, where he was the industry’s voice to congress and the administration for 16 years. Prior to his tenure with the Leagues, he served as a congressional aide to three members of Congress, was an aide to two members of the California State Legislature, and worked on a number of political campaigns. Mr. Empol holds a BA in Political Science from UC Davis and an MA in Government from Johns Hopkins University.

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept 27, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The san francisco-based LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired announced today that it has named Sharon Giovinazzo as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Founded in 1902, the LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired is one of the nation’s largest and most established blindness organizations, providing comprehensive education, training, and advocacy for the community.

Sharon Giovinazzo brings more than two decades of experience to leading organizations dedicated to advocating for and serving the needs of the blind and visually impaired. She will join LightHouse after serving as President and CEO of the World Services for the Blind.

She will drive efforts to promote the independence and equality of the community while strengthening the organization and its programs.

Prior to her role as President and CEO of the World Services for the Blind, she served for nearly a decade in various roles for the Raleigh Lions Clinic for the Blind (RLCB) where she assisted in the development and implementation of the agency’s $34 million budget, including determining staffing and operational needs and expenditures.

Prior to that, during her tenure with National Industries for the Blind (NIB), Giovinazzo is credited with providing the leadership for cultivating and understanding the AbilityOne programs with Congress, Federal Executive Branch Agencies, consumer and commercial organizations concerned with disability policy. Throughout her career, Sharon has been an advocate for public policy in legislative affairs and regulations. Prior to the NIB, she held positions with the Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CABVI) in Utica, NY; was appointed Chair to the State Rehabilitation Council in 2006 and supervised the operations of a DEPMEDS training facility with the US Army.

Sharon Giovinazzo holds a bachelor’s degree in Human Services Management from SUNY Empire State College and a dual master’s as an MSW and an MBA. Additionally, she holds a Certificate of Management in Business Administration from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business.

Giovinazzo will begin her position as CEO on October 25.

John Keene, currently Head of Music Staff and Chorus Master for Seattle Opera, will join the San Francisco Opera staff in January as choir director, the company announced on Tuesday, December 7th.

Keene succeeds Ian Robertson, who is retiring after 35 years in San Francisco.

Keene, 62, has been with Seattle Opera nine years since making his debut to prepare the choir for a 2012 production of Beethoven’s “Fidelio”. During this time he also directed a production of Laura Kaminsky’s “As One” and was assistant conductor for the production of Wagner’s “Ring” cycle.

Previously, he was Head of Music Staff and Chorus Master at the Florida Grand Opera in Miami and has worked at the Opera Theater of Saint Louis and the New Orleans Opera.

“This is a career you find, and not something you pave your way to,” Keene said in a telephone interview with The Chronicle. “In general, opera spoke to me early on because it’s such a big art form that involves so many people.”

Keene began his musical career as a pianist, but said he knew almost from the first moment that the life of a soloist was not for him.

“I love the collaborative part of making music,” he said, “especially the collaborative part of rehearsing. In a way, I love the rehearsal process even more than the performance. “

Keene got the job based in part on a single three-hour rehearsal with the choir earlier this fall.

“When we saw John work with the chorus, you could feel the connection immediately,” said Shilvock. “There was a bond of understanding – he trusted her musicality and he knew what he wanted and how to get her there.”

Keene agreed that his session with the choir was final.

“It’s been a very busy time in my current job and I haven’t had a lot of time to think about it. So I just went to show them my sample technique and how I worked, ”he recalls. “I immediately felt a connection with this special group of people. I was aware that they were tired and had come off their busy schedule on a day off, but I could feel their energy immediately. That is unusual and made me sit up and take notice. “

The ensemble will also begin work in the 2022/23 season, which marks the company’s 100th anniversary.
