Incredible footage shows the inside of Old Faithful Geyser in 1991

Yellowstone National Park covers some 3,500-square-miles of the US and is home to some of the world’s most iconic hydrothermal geysers and fumaroles. These include the iridescent colors of the Grand Prismatic Spring, the bubbling mud cauldrons that are the Artists Paint Pots and—of course—Old Faithful, the magnificent cone geyser that erupts a spray of water and steam roughly every 44–125 minutes. As millions of tourists marvel each year over the park’s many hydrothermal spectacles, so do earth scientists as they attempt to plumb the underground systems that formed and maintain them.

In their study, geophysicist Professor W. Steven Holbrook of Virginia Tech and his colleagues conducted special, airborne scientific surveys of Yellowstone using a special instrument called “SkyTEM”, which consists of a large loop of wire suspended from a helicopter.

The system — which emits repeated electromagnetic signals into the ground and measures the response of electrically conductive bodies — allowed them to identify areas underground with unusual electrical and magnetic properties.

Prof Holbrook said: “The combination of high electrical conductivity and low magnetization is like a fingerprint of hydrothermal activity that shows up very clearly in the data. The method is essentially a hydrothermal pathway detector.”

By making repeated passes over the path, the team were able to probe the subsurface along some 2,500 miles of so-called helicopter lines, from which they could create stunning maps of the subsurface “plumbing” under Yellowstone that supplies geysers such as Old Faithful.

Prof Holbrook added: “One of the unique aspects of this dataset is its extensive coverage of this huge system.

“We were not able just to look deep beneath the hydrothermal features, but also to see how adjacent features might be connected in the subsurface across great distances. That’s never been possible before.”

Old Faithful (pictured) is Yellowstone National Park’s most iconic geyser (Image: Getty Images)

Pictured: a survey line. Blue areas are conductive pathways while red are resistive lava flows (Image: Virginia Tech)

The researcher found that, perhaps unsurprisingly, the nature of Yellowstone’s hot springs are profoundly influenced by the geology of the vast national park.

Hot hydrothermal fluids — comprising both water and dissolved gases and minerals — were found to ascend vertically from depths of more than 0.6 miles into the park’s major hydrothermal fields, traveling along faults and fractures within the rock.

As they complete this journey, the fluids mix with the shallower groundwaters that flow both beneath and within the park’s lava flow deposits.

According to the team, the findings help to fill a longstanding gap in our understanding of the deep hydrothermal system that fuels Yellowstone’s iconic geysers and fumaroles.

READ MORE: Yellowstone volcano warning: ‘Huge rocks’ could ‘crush’ public

Pictured: the iridescent colors of the Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park (Image: Getty Images)

Previous studies have examined the park’s surface hydrothermal features — such as, for example, the eruptive intervals of the geysers, the chemistry and temperature of the mud pots and springs and the unique bacteria that thrive in these extreme environments.

Others, meanwhile, have used seismic data to learn about the earthquakes and deeper heat sources far beneath Yellowstone — but little had been known about the exact nature of the connection between these deep fluid sources and the surface features.

As Prof Holbrook put it: “Our knowledge of Yellowstone has long had a subsurface gap.

“It’s like a ‘mystery sandwich’ — we know a lot about the surface features from direct observation and a fair amount about the magmatic and tectonic system several kilometers down from geophysical work, but we don’t really know what’s in the middle.

“This project has enabled us to fill in those gaps for the first time.”

One such mystery the study has addressed concerns whether or not different hydrothermal areas of the park — exhibiting different chemistries and temperatures — might be supplied by different deep fluid sources.

The team found that the deep structure beneath areas like the Norris Geyser Basin and the Lower Geyser Basin is remarkably similar, suggesting that the observed surface differences are actually the result of variable degrees for mixing with shallow groundwater.

Pictured: the Artists Paint Pots, Yellowstone National Park (Image: Getty Images)

Paper author and geophysicist Dr Carol Finn of the US Geological Survey said: “While the airborne data were still being collected, we saw the first images over Old Faithful and knew instantly that our experiment had worked

“We could, for the first time, image the fluid pathways that had long been speculated.

“Our work has sparked considerable interest across a range of disciplines, including biologists looking to link areas of groundwater and gas mixing to regions of extreme microbiological diversity, geologists wanting to estimate volumes of lava flows, and hydrologists interested in modeling flow paths of groundwater and thermal fluid.

“With the paper as a guide and the release of the data and models, we will enable research in these diverse scientific communities.”

Pictured: study author and geophysicist Professor W. Steven Holbrook of Virginia Tech (Image: Virginia Tech)

The researchers’ study may be complete — but Yellowstone still holds plenty of mysteries.

In future studies, for example, Prof Holbrook said that they would like to look for further evidence for distance connections between isolated underground hydrothermal areas.

The SkyTEM data, he explained, has already revealed evidence for subsurface linkages between hydrothermal systems in Yellowstone that are up to six miles apart.

Prof Holbrook added: “That might have implications for the co-evolution of thermophilic bacteria and Archaea.”

“The notion that airborne geophysical data could illuminate something about the life of microscopic organisms living around hot springs is a fascinating idea.”

The team have also released their geophysical scans, allowing other researchers to conduct their own analyzes delving into the remarkable dataset.

Such, Prof Holbrook said, is “so big that we’ve only scratched the surface with this first paper. I look forward to continuing to work on this data and to seeing what others come up with, too.

“It’s going to be a data set that keeps on giving.”

The full findings of the study were published in the journal Nature.

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) — Remember when 3G service was all the rage for your mobile phone? Starting on 2/22/22, 3G will begin to go extinct, as carriers begin to phase the service out.

It was rough, but 3G first brought web surfing to your phone, beyond the standard phone calls and text messages.

READ MORE: First Alert Weather: 44-Day Dry Spell Ends In San Francisco; Storm Dumps Foot Of Snow In Sierra

AT&T is leading the change.

“Spectrum is a finite resource. The radio airwaves are a finite resource,” said Roger Cheng with CNET. “They need to repurpose them to bolster their existing services to 4G, 5G.”

This isn’t just about your phone. Ankle monitors, school buses, alarm systems and companies like LifeLine all use 3G service to provide constant low-level monitoring services. The plan was for all of those services to upgrade to 4G and then the pandemic hit.

“All of our companies were well on our way to working on it in March of 2020, we were basically shut down,” said John Brady, COO of Connect America and Lifeline. “We were unable to go into businesses and homes and get to the old 3G system and put the new 4G in. We lost 15 to 18 months because of the pandemic.”

It’s not just home systems — but also public transit.

The NEXT systems that give the waiting time for the next bus at Muni bus shelters around San Francisco are also affected by the switch.

READ MORE: San Jose Police Arrest 35 Suspects Wanted For Alleged Sex Crimes

“We had originally planned to have a perfect sync with the replacement of all of our wayfinding equipment in our bus shelters, but because it is 2021 and 2022 – the materials were not available on time we are re-arranging our existing services to make sure that we can continue to have real time predictions at locations where we have the most riders,” said Jeffrey Tumlin of SFMTA at a recent board meeting.

Muni is installing 4G kits to the extent that supply chain issues allow and adding QR codes at shelters so riders can get accurate data about bus arrivals.

“I think what will happen is people will be amazed at how many things they have working in their environment that all of a sudden is not going to work. So it is far more than just life safety, but certainly we’re most concerned about lives that will be at risk,” said Brady.

“Estimates range, they’re aren’t clear numbers on this, but estimates range from 3 million to 10 million people have a 3G phone and come Tuesday their service will cease to work,” said Cheng.

Best advice? If you have an iPhone5 or older or use any of these services — call your vendor today.

“Once that service is out – it’s going to be more difficult to get in touch with customer service,” adds Cheng. “If your phone is dead, there is no way to connect it. You have to physically go to a store and sort this mess out.”

AT&T is the first, but other mobile carriers have the same plans to end 3G service this year as well, with Sprint looking at the end of March, and Verizon and T-Mobile in July.

“Public health systems have played an important role in the vaccine response for low-income, diverse communities. The state of CA has relied on high-tech methods to attract the public to vaccination, which may be a barrier to access to care for low-income communities.” said Fiona Donald, MD, chief medical officer of the San Francisco Health Plan. “We believe that SFHP can help remove these barriers and provide alternative ways of accessing vaccines through our multilingual call center and direct contact with low-income, diverse communities in the UK San Francisco. “

The mission of the San Francisco Health Plan (SFHP) is to improve the health outcomes of different people San Francisco Communities through successful partnerships. Supporting the needs of our supplier network is central to our mission. SFHP has partnered with a Bay Area provider, Tactical Telesolutions, Inc. (TTS) to provide a multilingual call center. SFHP and TTS were able to hire and train the call center staff in less than three weeks to provide urgent support to the SFHN network for COVID-19 vaccinations.

“We were excited to do our part to support the dedicated staff at the city’s vaccination centers and clinics with their vaccination efforts. Our focus was on helping the key In-Home Support Service staff and vulnerable populations who do may not do anything to help with scheduling. ” Our staff and the call center have heard from our SFHP members and IHSS staff how much they appreciate their help with the vaccination. Our partners in town were impressive and we were proud to be part of the effort, “said John F. Grgurina, Jr., CEO of the San Francisco Health Plan.

Verizon continues to deliver unparalleled performance with its 5G Ultra Wideband service, the world’s fastest 5G3, built from the ground up for industrial and commercial use cases.

Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband offers speeds many times faster than 4G. When the technology matures, it is expected to be able to handle amounts of data 100 times larger than today’s 4G service and offer extremely low latencies. This is the time it takes for a signal to complete a round trip from Point A to Point B.
5G nationwide coverage from Verizon

Verizon today also announced the launch of 5G Nationwide for customers in California. Verizon’s 5G Nationwide runs on lower spectrum bands than 5G Ultra Wideband and uses an advanced technology called Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS). With Dynamic Spectrum Sharing, the 5G service can run simultaneously with 4G LTE on the same frequency band. When customers with DSS move outside Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband coverage area, their 5G-enabled devices with 5G technology and lower frequency bands will remain.

With this new technology, Verizon can leverage its entire portfolio of current spectrum resources to serve 4G and 5G customers, maximizing their experience on the Verizon network. Customers can use Verizon’s network in a variety of ways – from virtual learning to real-time gaming – and this requires the ability to allocate frequency resources in real time.

A Muni Metro driver may soon be able to enter a station, refer to a centralized map of regional transit connections, and pay a single fixed tariff for travel between providers and counties.

Congregation member David Chiu enacted the Seamless and Resilient Transit Act in the Bay Area on Wednesday. This is the final step in decades of efforts to create a more integrated transport network for the area and encourage residents to get out of their cars.

“Every day, hundreds of thousands of Bay Area residents have experienced a system that is fragmented, unreliable, difficult to use and inefficient,” Chiu said. “That’s the big picture.”

Despite its well-known reputation as a hub of innovation, the Bay Area has historically been home to one of the most inefficient, underutilized and costly transportation networks in the country.

As of 2017, only 5 percent of journeys in the Bay Area were in transit, and the number of per capita transit drivers decreased by 12 percent between 1991 and 2016, according to legislation.

While 31 percent of regional ground workers rely on public transportation, they are often faced with unreliable and misaligned connections between transit providers, high tariffs, long commutes, and in general a system so confusing that the idea of navigating it is daunting enough can instead push someone into a personal vehicle.

The same communities are most likely to bear the brunt of the environmental and health impacts caused by congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.

“We need to rebuild a transit system that works for everyone, especially our low-income residents and our residents of color communities around the bay,” said Chiu. “We need to do this in a way that is efficient, reliable, and has real access so that all of our families and workers can get to their jobs, schools and critical destinations quickly and efficiently.”

Gathering Bill 629 aims to simplify the landscape by focusing on four main areas for improvement: regional mapping and pathfinding; a pilot program for tariff integration; the creation of a network of priority transit routes to identify which corridors need to be addressed most urgently; and mandatory use of real-time open transit data by providers to inform travelers’ decisions.

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission would be empowered to determine how the bill’s requirements were carried out, though it would coordinate itself with the transit agencies and be given clear metrics and deadlines to ensure that the nine counties regional facility is on track stay, said Chiu.

If passed, MTC would have to create a pilot program for tariff integration by July 1, 2023 with which a single pass with a uniform tariff structure would be created for travelers in three countries.

It would also mandate the Commission to develop a standardized regional transit mapping and routing system by July 1, 2024, and a plan for its maintenance and funding until the following year.

Chiu introduced a similar bill in February 2020, just weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic hit and turned the state’s legislative agenda on its head. The bill was pushed into the background, but a few months later the regional transit leaders formed a working group under the Metropolitan Transportation Commission to begin a dialogue on how to address the region’s lack of integration, the Blue Ribbon Task Force.

Much of this legislation is reflected in AB 629, with the exception of the previous requirement to set up a working group of transit managers for coordination work, a process already being carried out with the Blue Ribbon Task Force.

Now that the region is beginning to rise to the challenge of recreation, the goal of a seamless transit network is more important than ever.

“As we recover, we are all very concerned that our transit systems have been decimated and we need to make sure that as we rebuild and restore we are building a 21st century transit system for the ages,” Chiu said.

The call for a more integrated transportation system in the Bay Area has been around for decades, but it has erupted again and again, even as other cities like Seattle and London have managed to tackle fragmentation.

Opposition often came from transit agency officials, who said the integration of tariffs – and therefore Farebox revenue – could jeopardize their ability to provide reasonable service and maintenance, even though they are anxious to find ways to make timetables better Synchronize and improve pathfinding Keeping up-to-date or acting quickly to respond to local needs.

“We are not saying that there has to be a tariff system today and we have to find out immediately,” said Chiu. “But we say there needs to be a conversation about how people can travel through more than one transit operator while ideally paying a flat rate.”

Details would largely be worked out through the collaboration between these transit agency heads and the MTC.

“Our region cannot wait any longer,” said Chiu.
