MENLO PARK (CBS SF / AP) – Under attack in the media and in Washington, Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg announced on Thursday that he would change the name of the company he founded to “Meta” to reflect the attempt at social media – To reflect giants, move on to its “next” chapter, ”and away from the controversy that entangles it.

The announcement makes Facebook one of Meta’s eponymous services alongside Instagram and WhatsApp.

CONTINUE READING: COVID: Oakland Unified sets January deadline for students 12 and older to be fully vaccinated

“I’ve been thinking a lot about our identities as we begin this next chapter,” he said. “Facebook is one of the most widely used products in world history. It’s an iconic social media brand, but increasingly, it just doesn’t encompass everything we do. “

He said the name reflected his vision of a futuristic metaverse.

Skeptics point out, however, that this also appears to be an attempt to change the subject from the Facebook Papers, a leaked document find dubbed by a consortium of news organizations including The Associated Press.

Many of these documents, first described by former Facebook employee and whistleblower Frances Haugen, have revealed how Facebook has ignored or downplayed internal warnings of the negative and often harmful consequences its algorithms created or created for social networks around the world have enlarged.

“I know some people will say that this is not the time to focus on the future, and I want to acknowledge that there are important issues in the present that need to be worked on. There will always be, ”said Zuckerberg. “For a lot of people, I’m just not sure if there will ever be a good time to focus on the future. But I also know that many of you feel the same way as me. “

“We live for what we build,” added Zuckerberg. “And while we make mistakes, we keep learning and building and moving.”

CONTINUE READING: UPDATE: The high-speed pursuit of stolen RVs ends with the terrifying San Ramon Crash

Zuckerberg believes the Metaverse will reach a billion people within the next decade. The Metaverse, he says, will be a place where people can interact, work, and create products and content in what he hopes will be a new ecosystem that will create millions of creative jobs.

The announcement comes amid an existential crisis for Facebook. Following the revelations in the Facebook papers, it is subject to tightened legislative and regulatory scrutiny in many parts of the world.

Facebook, the app, will stay with Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. the corporate structure of the company will not change either. But on December 1st the shares will trade under the new ticker symbol “MVRS”.

Metaverse, he said, was the new way. A fan of classics, Zuckerberg explained that the word “meta” comes from the Greek word “beyond”.

A rebranding of the company will not solve the myriad problems with Facebook that have been exposed in thousands of internal documents over the past few weeks. It probably won’t even make people stop calling the social media giant Facebook – or a “social media giant” for that matter.

But that doesn’t stop Zuckerberg, who is apparently eager to move on to his next big thing as crisis after crisis looms in the company he founded.

While largely dismissing revelations from the Facebook Papers as unfair criticism, Zuckerberg has focused on building a virtual environment that you can walk into instead of just looking at a screen.

MORE NEWS: Group Forms to Aid the Return of Former California Prison Inmates to Society

Just as smartphones are replacing desktop computers, Zuckerberg is betting that the Metaverse will be the next way people interact with computers – and with each other. If Instagram and messaging were Facebook’s forays into mobile evolution, Meta is its bet on the Metaverse. And what’s better than a name change to show how serious he is?

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – The San Francisco Schools Board stands ready to reverse a heavily criticized decision to purge 44 schools of names allegedly associated with racism, sexism or other injustices, which critics have denounced as outmoded activism.

A little over two months ago, the city’s elected school board voted to strip schools of historical figures including Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Robert Louis Stevenson. A school named after long-time Senator Dianne Feinstein is also on the list.

Parents, students and elected officials blew up the board over some of its goals – and timing. The decision was made in late January when all public classrooms in San Francisco were closed due to coronavirus restrictions. You still are. Mayor London Breed called it “offensive and totally unacceptable”, among other things, for the board of directors to focus on changing the names of the schools rather than bringing the children back into the classrooms.

Some of the city’s youngest students are expected to return to face-to-face teaching this month after more than a year of distance learning due to the pandemic. There is no return schedule for middle and high school students.

The renaming efforts have also been criticized for poor research and historical inaccuracies. A renaming advisory board falsely accused Paul Revere of wanting to colonize the Penobscot people. It also confused the Alamo Elementary School name with the Battle of Texas rather than the Spanish word for “poplar tree.”

Feinstein Elementary made the list because, as mayor, in 1984 she first replaced a destroyed Confederate flag that was part of a long-term exhibition in front of the town hall.

Amid the outcry, CEO Gabriela Lopez said in February that the process would be suspended until all the children were back in school. Lopez admitted in a statement that mistakes had been made in school selection and said when the board got back on the matter it would involve historians for a “more deliberate process”.

The board is expected to vote on a resolution to overturn its January decision on Tuesday and re-examine the matter after all students return to face-to-face learning full-time.

Since the renaming, the board has faced several lawsuits, including one from City Hall and the mayor to pressure the school district and board to reopen classrooms faster. Another motion was filed in March by San Francisco attorney Paul Scott, whose children are attending public schools. The school board’s renaming decision violated the California Open Congregation Act and did not involve the community.

San Francisco Supreme Court Justice Ethan Schulman issued a ruling asking the board to do what the lawsuit requires – overturn the vote and dissolve the advisory committee on the renaming – or by April 16 to show why he shouldn’t be forced to do so.

The resolution, which will be examined Tuesday, does not respond to the criticism but denounces the lawsuit, saying it wants to “avoid the distraction and wasteful spending of public funds in frivolous litigation”.

In other recent controversies, the school board has been criticized for wanting to end performance-based admissions at San Francisco’s top public high school, Lowell, and use the same lottery-based system that admitted students to other high schools.

Tuesday’s meeting will also be the first since the board decided last week to remove one of its members, Alison Collins, from her role as Vice President and other titles over her 2016 tweets about Asian Americans.

In the tweets, Collins said that Asian Americans think “white supremacists” to get ahead. She defied calls to resign and last week sued the school district and five of her six colleagues on charges of violating their freedom of speech. She is demanding $ 87 million in damages.

The San Francisco Board of Education will ultimately retain the names of dozens of public schools when it comes to high stakes.

The board had advanced a controversial plan to change the names of 44 schools honoring those associated with historical racism or oppression. However, on Tuesday the board unanimously voted to suspend efforts when it passed a resolution saying “avoid the distraction and wasteful spending of public funds in frivolous litigation”.

The reversal met with relief and enthusiasm from various critics, who agreed in their opposition to the project. Conservatives called the effort a culture rampage, while Liberals criticized the extremely poor research by the Blue Ribbon Panel that resulted in the long list of school names being changed.

For example, President Abraham Lincoln, whose legacy is defined by the emancipation of black slaves, was put on the list because it was decided to permit the execution of 38 Santee Sioux convicted of the rape and murder of white settlers. However, critics say the panel failed to consider that the state of Minnesota would have executed 300 Santee Sioux if Lincoln had not intervened and commuted their sentences on their behalf, sparing all but the 38 who were hanged.

SFist also reported, “The Board Committee mistakenly assumed that the Alamo Elementary School was named after the battle of Texas, rather than the Spanish word for” poplar tree, “Maine Penobscot people – the 1779 Penobscot expedition he participated in was actually an unsuccessful battle with the British who landed on Penobscot territory and “captured” it a month earlier. “

San Francisco Mayor London Breed has been reprimanding the board for months for prioritizing the project in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic shutdown.

“What I fail to understand is why the school board is pushing a plan to rename all of these schools by April if there is no plan to have our children back in the classroom by then,” Breed said in a January statement.

“Our students are suffering, and we should talk about getting them into classrooms, helping them with mental health, and giving them the resources they need during this challenging time.”

Other critics, including Attorney Paul Scott, who filed a lawsuit against the district on behalf of the SFUSD Alumni Association’s Abraham Lincoln High School, said the board did not involve the community in the process.

“That approach of basically suggesting that they have the corner of morality and dictating everyone else top-down … that’s not an acceptable approach,” Scott told NBC News.

Board chairwoman Gabriela López took note of the complaints in February, saying the process started in 2018 and preceded the pandemic.

I want to make sure that as many people as possible can see my statement about the board’s focus on reopening our schools. pic.twitter.com/8aJvMdNNPT

– Teacher and President Gabriela López @ (@ lopez4schools) February 22, 2021

“I acknowledge and accept responsibility for mistakes made in the renaming process,” she said in a statement.

López added that the board will “pursue a more deliberate process that includes the involvement of historians at nearby universities”. She also noted that the renaming committee had been suspended indefinitely. She said the school board will use its energies to get students back into personal study.

Elementary school students are expected to return starting this month. The board of directors passed a resolution on Tuesday in which a personal full-time class for all K-12 students will be determined at the beginning of the next school year in August.

The renaming will not be carried out again until this happens.

In the tweets, Collins said that Asian Americans are using “white supremacist” thinking to get ahead. She defied calls to resign and last week sued the school district and five of her six colleagues on charges of violating their freedom of speech. She is demanding $ 87 million in damages.

A San Francisco law firm filed a lawsuit against the school district and the city’s school board on Thursday for ruling in January to rename 44 schools without community input.

Attorney Paul Scott told Fox News that former Congressman John Burton and Laurence Tribe, a professor of constitutional law at Harvard University, had joined his efforts.

The lawsuit alleges that the San Francisco Unified School District and the school authority’s renaming of the schools violated the Brown Act, a state law that requires local government business to be conducted at open and public gatherings.

The San Francisco Board of Education voted 6-1 in late January to rename 44 of the city’s public schools, named after historical figures such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson because of their ties to slavery.

San Francisco Mayor, London Breed, who is Black, called the move poorly timed amid the coronavirus pandemic that has closed the city’s schools since last March.

The vote sparked anger among parents, who argued that the school board was more concerned with changing the names of the schools than devising a plan to get the children back into the classrooms.

The process of naming schools was suspended in February after Scott threatened legal action. The decision to rename the schools remains, however, as each of the 44 school locations will have to submit a new name by mid-April, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

At the hearing on Thursday, Scott said a judge ruled that the San Francisco Board of Education must overturn the name change resolution and dissolve the School Names Committee or provide reasons why it shouldn’t.

Scott said a hearing on the matter was scheduled for May 6th. He hoped the school board would overturn its decision to rename 44 schools, disband the renaming committee, and restart the process in a more transparent way – one that includes community input.

Scott clarified that his lawsuit will not prevent a community from revising a school name, provided the process is conducted after full and fair hearings, community submissions, and due process.

Fox News approached SFUSD for comment but received no response prior to posting.

Fox News’ Brie Stimson, Michael Lundin and Audrey Conklin contributed to this report.
