By Brandon Miller, CFP–

As a kid, I loved a board game called Stratego, which is different every time you play it. You are trying to protect your flag while exposing the other person’s. This requires that you move your stones just right to avoid the obstacles your opponent puts in front of you (miners can disperse bombs, for example).

I find retirement planning a bit like playing Stratego. They have many pieces of different values - IRAs, 401 (k) s, social security, etc. – that you can move around in different ways. There are hidden bombs, like rampant inflation or serious illness, that can blow up part of your wealth. But there are also strategic ways to avoid or circumvent these challenges.

The first step in setting up your retirement plan is to determine how much money you will need. For this article, let’s say you’ve already calculated that total. Now you need to think about where that money is coming from every month.

A good rule of thumb is to spend your taxable accounts and savings first. Then turn to tax-privileged vehicles like IRAs and 401 (k) s and finally, tax-free Roth accounts. In this way, the tax advantages are retained for as long as possible.

Here are some other steps to consider:

Be strategic in taking social security income.

There is more to apply for SSI than we have room here, but these are some key points: By the age of 62, those of you who are eligible may begin to claim your benefit, although it is significantly less as if you were waiting. This reduced amount will last for the rest of your life. At full retirement age – 67 or 66 and a change for those born in the 1950s – you will receive your full benefit. Wait until 70 to take SSI and your monthly payment will be 32% higher.

Health, savings, marital status, and other factors all influence your timing. But in general, if you have additional sources of income to bridge the gap, waiting as long as possible to start earning SSI is a good move.

Install financial guard rails.

One tactic is to recreate your paycheck by bundling all of the income you get from various sources into one bucket and then taking out what is needed every month or two weeks. This provides the discipline and structure to help you spend what you should.

Also, knowing the market is volatile, you can create a shock absorber by funding an emergency account with expenses for 1 to 2 years. Use this account in ugly years instead of selling assets at a loss and then replenish the fund when the market recovers. Repeat this over and over and you can help ensure that your plans are not ruined when the market collapses.

Watch out for taxes.

Your retirement income can have a significant impact on your healthcare costs. Unlike tiered income taxes, Medicare spending is a steep cliff. For example, individuals earning $ 88,000 or less in 2021 ($ 176,000 or less for co-filing couples) will pay the standard $ 148.50 per month premium for Medicare Part B. Earn more than half / three quarters of a million for individuals / Pairs and now you’re paying $ 504.90 every month for the next calendar year – nearly 3.5 times that. So if you buy a large inheritance or sell your home, it can lead to significantly higher healthcare costs.

Also, at 72, Uncle Sam gets impatient and demands that you withdraw some money from tax-privileged instruments. These Minimum Payouts Required (RMDs) are based on your account balance and life expectancy. Note that tax-free Roth money will not have RMDs in your lifetime – since the government already has their money – although your beneficiaries may have to pay RMDs to avoid penalties.

RMDs for high balance IRAs could put you in an expensive tax bracket. Instead, you could convert to a Roth IRA or significantly reduce your traditional IRA before deploying RMDs. Those planning to donate pots of money to charities can use Qualified Charity Payouts. This will give all or part of your RMDs to charities you designate. You will not count the gift as taxable income and your charity will not pay any tax on it. Win win!

In a nutshell, Stratego is a game; Your retirement isn’t. But in either case, smart planning can help protect what is most precious – your flag on the board and your dreams in real life.

Pitcher Barry Zito, a soulful presence on both sides of the bay for more than a decade, officially announced his expected resignation on Monday with a heartfelt ego article in the Players Tribune describing the many ups and downs of his career.

“I’m going back from baseball today, but I’ll never be too far removed from the game that made me who I am,” wrote Zito. “I’m immensely grateful to be at peace with leaving, especially thanks to my year of renewal in Nashville with the Sounds.

“My return to Oakland last month was a ‘cherry on top’ moment in my life that my family and I will never forget. I will undoubtedly stand in the stands on both sides of the bay in the years to come. “

Zito was referring to the 2015 season he spent with Oakland’s Triple-A team before the A’s called him to the majors in late September. He made three appearances, including two starts, one against his former Oakland “Big Three” colleague Tim Hudson and the Giants at the Coliseum.

Music has long been a part of Zito’s life. His late parents worked in the industry. His season in Music City allowed him to reconnect with those roots and propel him into a post-baseball career.

“Today I am very happy to be a ‘rookie’ again in a new field: songwriting,” wrote Zito. “I’m sure the lessons baseball taught me will help me develop the thick skin I need for this new endeavor. If you happen to hear a song of mine one day, I hope you are honest with what you think. I’ve built up adversity-handling skills over the years, so go ahead and fire!

Most of these adversities came in San Francisco after he signed a seven-year contract for $ 126 million prior to the 2007 season. When he was badly served, the fans let him know. He wrote that some of his own fans “yelled profanity in my face while I was in the dugout”. Zito sometimes called his mother to “seek five minutes of comfort with someone who understood me.”

Roberta Zito died that same year.

Long before those tough days in San Francisco, Zito established himself as one of the majors’ top pitchers during the happy A days of the early 2000s with a signature round house curveball. He made his debut in 2000 and two years later won the American League’s Cy Young Award with a 23-5 record and a 2.75 ERA.

Zito had exceptional numbers in his original seven seasons with the A’s, 102-63 with a 3.55 ERA. When he became a free agent, the Giants needed a makeover for the franchise in a Barry Bonds era they knew was about to end, and baffled baseball by giving Zito the $ 126 million deal by far the most that they had ever awarded a player.

The contract surprised many in the game who believed Zito’s days as a top-of-the-rotation starter were over.

In fact, Zito was struggling in San Francisco. He was banned from all postseason squads in 2010 when the Giants won the first of their three World Series championships over five seasons. Ultimately, he made himself popular with the fans by taking part without complaint and then making a huge contribution to the 2012 championship.

In Game 5 of the National League Championship Series in St. Louis, in which the Giants lost three to one, Zito scored a staggering 72/3 innings at Busch Stadium to secure a 5-0 win that took the series to San Francisco relocated where the Giants won Games 6 and 7 for the pennant. Then Zito opened a four-game sweep for the Tigers in the World Series by beating Justin Verlander with an 8-3 win at AT&T Park.

“Aside from all the accomplishments,” wrote Zito, “the only thing that fulfills me today is acceptance of myself as a worthy and valuable person, regardless of my stature or position in the world, on any particular day of my career. ”

The Alaska Supreme Court on Thursday heard a case that unions say could affect the pension plans of thousands of former state employees.

It is not the first time this case has been heard by the country’s highest court.

Juneau resident Peter Metcalfe said he was making college money in the early 1970s when he got a government job that involved “stamping kettles” at the Capitol. He basically worked as a chimney sweep using a four-foot brush to pull gallons of soot out of chimneys.

“I was wrapped in cloth to keep the soot away from me,” recalls Metcalfe. “I only remember standing in the Capitol fountain with the sun shining and sweat running down my face, and I’m sure I was all black. I thought ‘I have to be somewhere else.’ “

After only a few weeks, Metcalfe left town to try his hand at commercial fishing.

Metcalfe said he really didn’t get it at the time, but had he stayed in the state he could have been taken on as a Level I employee.

These Tier I benefits are known to be generous. These included a defined benefit retirement plan, cost of living adjustments, and family medical insurance upon retirement at age 55.

“A gold chain in Juneau with ‘Tier I’ on it, everyone loves you!” said Metcalfe’s attorney Mark Choate with a laugh. “You know you are the object of desire because it’s such a great pension system.”

These advantages – this “gold chain” – are no longer available to new civil servants.

Metcalfe didn’t work for the state again. But the crux of the matter is what would happen if he wanted to do that now.

In the early 1980s, he triggered his retirement account. But by then he could have paid his pension back and returned to work as a Level I employee.

He can’t do that now. If he went back to work for the state, he would get a new type of pension that is not as generous as his original plan.

In 2005, the legislature ended membership in all defined benefit pension plans and introduced the new defined contribution Tier IV plan.

“It just felt like Fiat was making laws,” Metcalfe said. “In other words, the governor and the legislature, the ruling party had majorities in both houses and the governor was Republican and they just got it through.”

Metcalfe believes this is against the Alaskan Constitution. In particular, he refers to Article XII, Section 7, which states that a worker’s pension must never be reduced and that membership of a pension plan is a contractual relationship with the state.

Oral arguments before the judges on Thursday should focus on the interpretation of the pension benefits section of the Constitution and whether it is unconstitutional to deny Metcalfe’s potential pension benefits.

Prosecutors refused to do a taped interview for this story. But they argued before the Alaska Supreme Court five years ago that Metcalfe finally ended his contractual relationship with the state when he paid off his retirement. They also said he waited too long to file a lawsuit.

Two incumbent judges have withdrawn because of a possible conflict of interest.

Two former judges, Dana Fabe and Warren Matthews, came out of retirement to hear and rule the case.

The Alaska Supreme Court usually delivers an opinion 6-12 months after oral arguments.

State workers’ unions have stated that a decision in favor of Metcalfe could also affect up to 85,000 former workers who may wish to return to a state job and be carried over into their previous retirement plans.
