RICHMOND — Can you ferry a boat, sling delicious hors d’oeuvres, tidy up bedsheets and make guests feel at home in a five-room inn in the middle of San Pablo Bay?

If so, the picturesque East Brother Light Station may have a job for you.

Applications are open for two new innkeepers to keep the nearly 150-year-old lighthouse up and running for two years, starting in April 2023.

“People who typically apply have been in the hospitality industry and they like working with the public; they’re people who have worked on boats for a long time,” said Tom Butt, Richmond’s outgoing mayor and president of the East Brother Light Station Inc., which runs the lighthouse. “It’s very attractive for those type of people: Boats and lighthouses are like peanut butter and jelly.”

Perched on a rocky mound near Point Molate and visible from the Richmond Bridge, the iconic bed-and-breakfast offers beautiful panoramic views of the San Francisco and San Pablo bays.

In addition to seasonal day visits and special events, visitors on the island can enjoy rented-out rooms inside the goldenrod California Victorian structures — surrounded by miles of shimmering salt water and the occasional harbor seal — Thursday through Sunday for $475 to $525 a night.

While it’s a dream job for some, the role is not an breeze or some cushy, luxury getaway.

“It’s a really cool place, but the one thing the job doesn’t allow you to do is sit around and drink piña coladas while enjoying the view,” Butt said. “It’s hard work.”

Innkeepers must assume the role of maid, boat captain, gift shop attendant, tour guide, host and chef with “high-quality culinary experience” to prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner. Applicants who are smokers, live with children or have pets will not be selected.

Additionally, at least one of the innkeepers must have a Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential boat operator’s license, in order to safely ferry guests from the launch at 1900 Stenmark Drive in Richmond to East Brother Island and back.

Two previous innkeepers, Tiffany Danse and Tyler Waterson, estimated they worked at least 80 to 90 hours each week to maintain East Brother Light Station, which is a registered California Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The current innkeepers, Bryan and Stephanie Wesolek, will be leaving after their two-year commitment comes to a close at the end of March.

The newly chosen duo, which does not have to be a romantic couple, will be compensated with a majority portion of the profits of the inn, after the expenses of operation are subtracted. On top of benefits like a health care plan, two weeks of vacation and onsite living quarters on the nearly three-quarters of an acre island, the keepers’ gross pay in 2021-22 was $140,000 split between them.

Butt said there are other perks, too, such as tips and networking opportunities to land future gigs. “You might make me your future employer while working,” he said.

Butt said the staff is supported by volunteers who help out with maintenance of the facilities, such as painting and repair jobs around the grounds. While the $300,000 nonprofit has a list of 300 volunteers, there is a core group of a dozen stewards who work the grounds weekly, Butt said.

And without access to Wi-Fi, reliable cell service and plumbing — aside from a rainwater catchment and cistern system — the job takes the concept of “remote work” to another level.

The nonprofit, which Butt founded, has leased the island from the Coast Guard and run the business, primarily as a means to afford costly repairs and upkeep.

The restored inn was opened in 1980, a few decades after the Coast Guard decommissioned the island’s historic lighthouse keepers in favor of automatic boat beacons.

More information about East Brother Light Station and the innkeeper job can be found at www.ebls.org, and questions may be emailed to EastBrotherLightStationJOBS@gmail.com.

SAN FRANCISCO — Located in the heart of the Mission District, urban greenhouse Arcana beckons passersby to step inside the stylish space. Teeming with artful greenery, grab a glass of wine or mug of yerba mate and take a seat on the comfy green couch as you cozy into what many call a home away from home.

“Everybody should have access to a beautiful place, good music, good food, good wine,” said Arcana founder and curator Naz Khorram. “Basically, an extended version of my own living room in my own personal home was what I was really striving for.”

Whether you’d like to become a plant parent or add to your existing collection, Arcana offers hundreds of carefully selected options to fill your space.

“We handpick every single plant, choosing plants and pots that go together to create some sort of vibe that you can kind of imagine in your space,” explained Plant Specialist & Interiorscaper Anna Trautman. “It’s a place where you actually get to see living things as a form of art. It’s also a place for community.”

A plant shop and teahouse by day and wine bar-restaurant by night, Arcana serves as an oasis that connects the community through sustainable offerings.

“From our plant-based food to our natural wine to the tea, everything is pretty environmentally focused and inspired,” said Operations Coordinator Andy Garcia.

For Arcana founder Khorram, the shop’s location and welcoming vibe hits close to home.

The former Presidio Public Health Hospital (Google)

These $ 3,730 a month apartments in a former San Francisco hospital are certainly for rent, even though they may already be inhabited by ghosts.

SFGate.com reports that three one-bedroom apartments on the fifth floor of the former Presidio Public Health Hospital could very well be haunted, or at least have upstairs neighbors who could rumble at night.

That’s because the building has a curious – and creepy – history. The listed hospital, built in 1932, served patients until 1981, and for some time staff there conducted medical research and animal experiments on the sixth floor – and paranormal experts claim it is haunted in the area.

According to SFGhosts.com, many residents who have moved into apartments since the building was converted in 2010 have complained of being visited by otherworldly beings. One said she would return home to find things all over the floor, and when she slept she sometimes saw the indentation of someone sitting at the foot of her bed.

Other local residents have claimed to have seen men in army uniforms knock on their doors and then (of course) vanish into thin air.

But that shouldn’t stop anyone from moving there, should it? A couple of ghouls should certainly not put anyone off the opportunity to live in the Presidio, with its breathtaking views of Golden Gate Park and Sutro Tower and easy access to hiking, running and biking trails.

Each one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment listed on Craigslist also has 700 square feet, a Bosch washer and dryer, floor-to-ceiling windows, and full-length vinyl plank floors. Together with the (alleged) ghosts, the building has an inner courtyard opposite the apartments.

Still, the monthly rent can be a little daunting. According to SFGate, the average rent for other one-bedroom apartments in the neighborhood is under $ 3,000 a month.

Nothing screams summer like a tropical cocktail served in one of San Francisco’s most famous tiki bars. And next month, you can do just that.

On Thursday, the Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar announced via Instagram that it would reopen for nightly service every Friday and Saturday on July 9th. Details were thin, but Eater reports that once the restaurant and bar are fully open, diners can expect to be seated on a first come, first served basis. And yes, the thunderstorms are coming again.

The famous Tiki bar, located in the Fairmont San Francisco Hotel, has been temporarily closed since March 2020 when the pandemic shutdowns began and has not yet shared any updates on its social media channels. On Instagram, the Tonga Room wrote that it plans to share more while counting to the bar reopening.

With warmer days and a newly opened San Francisco, the expected return of the Tonga Room is a sign that nature is healing. Just try not to get overwhelmed by excitement and end up in the bar pool.

San Francisco may have suffered a painful population loss in 2020, but the city’s luxury real estate market is now rolling back like fog from the bay. Expensive home sales and prices are skyrocketing, and one particularly confident high-end developer just got one special house in Cow Hollow for $ 46 million.

If that were achieved, it would be one of the most expensive sales ever in San Francisco, which has one of the highest income inequality rates in the US and according to data it lost 4 percent of its population in May a migration report from the analysis company Placer.ai.

Despite these strong headwinds, Neal Ward, the realtor for 2582 Filbert Street, a newly built six bedroom mansion on triple the width of lot, is optimistic about the city’s prospects. “After a very uncertain 2020, the market took off in March 2021 in ways we have never seen or expected,” he told Robb Report. “What made San Francisco and Silicon Valley wonderful living environments is now being brought back to life after a sleepy Covid, and the city’s pulse has never felt stronger.”

Retiring “families and influencers”, he said, have been replaced by “an enormous number of new upstarts” [who] have been very successful. ”Awards, he said, are supported by San Francisco’s“ limited geography and available properties ”. The $ 46 million price tag, he says, isn’t as unusual as it seems. “While other properties exist at much higher prices, they are not for sale or are not publicly marketed.”

One recently report by Compass supports Ward’s optimism. Sales of four or more bedrooms rose 22 percent year-over-year, while the average selling price of a home in Pacific Heights, just around the corner from 2582 Filbert Street, rose to a new high of $ 6.75 million a year is to this day (although there were only 16 sales, the supply is so tight.)

The 12,200-square-foot house is spread over three levels, with each floor being approximately 4,000 square-feet. The house is an emblem of biophilic design, a new trend in which a house is built to prioritize natural materials, light, ventilation, and technology for filtering air and water. This room has a cornucopia of energy-saving and wellness-promoting facilities: solar collectors, pollutant-free paints, triple-glazed windows and doors, rainwater harvesting and a MERV-13 air filter system that changes the indoor air nine times a day.

Inside, the 19-foot high motorized front door (accessible via biometric entrance, of course) opens to a two-story atrium with a 30-foot stone wall. The prospective buyer can also find a floating glass staircase and reflective indoor pools. Further exploration reveals three indoor fireplaces and two outdoor fire pits, a fitness room with a terrace for open-air workouts, a 72-foot lap pool and built-in stainless steel spa, a separate “wellness spa” with a glass sauna and steam shower with waterfall chromotherapy -Rain head. Other delights include a private movie theater, wine bar, Tesla Powerwall, and must-have lighting fixtures that “mimic natural shapes like water waves, plant vessel systems, lightning bolts, and other fractal shapes.”

Outside, a small but very well-kept garden behind the house has a stone terrace, a lawn, an outside kitchen and evergreen plants to hide from the neighbors. The upper floors also open to terraces, while the roof is crowned by an outdoor lounge with views across the bay from the Golden Gate Bridge to Alcatraz.

According to the developer of the house, Gregory Malin, CEO of Troon Pacific, the look is “San Francisco meets Los Angeles. An open, airy, modern, newly built house on such an extensive plot of land in San Francisco is unique. “

Ward is even more exuberant: “The residence is one of the rarest and most epic properties that San Francisco has ever seen, or will ever see again.”
