A Corpus Christi man who was previously convicted and is now on the wrong side of the law again has received a decade-long prison sentence for a drive-by shooting at a former client's home. Jason Jaime Merdes, 44, will serve 120 months in federal prison following the ruling by U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos, U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani confirmed Wednesday.

Merdes pleaded guilty to the charges back in August, and at the most recent court hearing the victims came forward to tell of the horror caused by the bullets flying dangerously close to their slumbering children. The repairman had previously been fired by the homeowner for a botched repair job and was quickly suspected of possibly being the shooter after the incident in May, a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice said.

Police were alerted to this by surveillance video that showed a suspicious vehicle that closely resembled the one Merdes was driving. They didn't have to wait long before they spotted the vehicle leaving his house. During a subsequent traffic stop, officers discovered a smoking gun – a holster on Merdes' belt and, more importantly, a firearm under his seat that matched the used cartridges from the crime scene. During a subsequent search of his apartment, a further trove of nine firearms was discovered.

“Two shooting victims testified in court and both described how the shooting affected their lives and how close the shots were to the rooms where their children were sleeping,” the Justice Department report detailed. Further proceedings will determine which federal prison will become Merdes' new home in the coming years.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Corpus Christi Police Department conducted the incident. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ashley Martin led the prosecution in the courtroom.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Two San Francisco gang members who opened fire during a funeral reception for a pimp, killing one person and wounding four innocent bystanders, were sentenced Wednesday to life in federal prison, prosecutors said.

Robert Manning, 31, and Jamare Coats, 29, were sentenced for a March 23, 2019 shooting that took place in front of the Fillmore Heritage Center and not far from a police station.

The men who belonged to a local street gang got into a shootout on a crowded sidewalk during which at least 24 shots were fired, the US attorney’s office for the Northern District of California said in a statement.

Prosecutors said the battle began with a confrontation between several gang members and associates attending a reception at the center for Ron Newt, who had died that month at 69. Newt was a well-known and flamboyant San Francisco pimp in the 1970s and 1980s.

The victim, 25-year-old Mister Dee Carnell Simmons III, “acted disrespectfully towards them, branding a firearm and threatening” them, the US attorney’s statement said.

Manning, Coats and others left the building and went to their parked cars where Manning and Coats armed themselves and got into the shootout with Simmons, who died of his wounds, authorities said.

Four other people were wounded in the crossfire, including a bystander who was shot in the back and paralyzed from the waist down as he tried to escape the shooting, prosecutors said.

Manning and Coats were convicted in August of murder in aid of racketeering and of being felons in possession of firearms.

A Woodland man faces assault and unlawful firearms possession charges after he allegedly shot a man in July who performed work for him.

Joseph Ralls, 82, was scheduled for an arraignment hearing in Clark County Superior Court on Sept. 20. He faces charges of first-degree assault and three counts of second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.

Ralls was initially scheduled for an arraignment on Sept. 13 though he did not appear at the time of the hearing. According to court documents, he appeared an hour later and the court moved to reschedule.

During Ralls’ first court appearance on Sept. 7 he was granted supervised release and was ordered to wear a GPS device due to medical conditions, according to court records.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Woodland police officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Island Aire Drive to respond to a shooting at around 3:16 pm on July 27. Officers were told someone had been shot but had left in a pickup truck.

On arrival, officers found the resident of the home, Ralls, down on the wheelchair ramp to his residence. Ralls told officers a burglar tried to enter his home. He refused medical treatment and went to the Woodland Police Department to talk with officers.

At 3:30 pm that day, officers learned a shooting victim had arrived at the Cowlitz Tribal Police Station on the tribal reservation, the affidavit stated. The victim, identified as Kenneth Aguilar, 32, told officers he had gone to Ralls’ residence to collect money Ralls owed him when he was shot.

An officer responding to the residence saw an “obvious” bullet hole through a window to the right of the front door, the affidavit stated. Ralls told officers he fell out of his wheelchair and dropped a gun under a skirting panel at the bottom of the ramp.

In an interview, Ralls said Aguilar worked as a handyman for Ralls for a few months and believed Aguilar was using drugs, according to the affidavit. Ralls said Aguilar had harassed Ralls’ wife for weeks while Ralls was in the hospital.

Ralls said Aguilar demanded $100 from his wife. Aguilar reportedly did not accept the $25 the woman offered him for what she believed they owed him, the affidavit stated. Ralls said he was defending his home when he shot Aguilar through the window, who had been standing outside on the wheelchair ramp.

“Ralls said more than once he wished he had been a better shot,” the affidavit stated.

He could not explain a specific threat Aguilar made toward his wife.

Ralls told officers he was a convicted felon which prohibited him from owning a firearm, the affidavit stated, and that the gun was his wife’s. He said he went outside after shooting at Aguilar, after which his motorized wheelchair tipped over at the bottom of the ramp.

During the interview, Ralls “said something to the effect that Aguilar was a ‘tweaker that needed to be put down,'” according to the affidavit.

Ralls’ wife told a similar story to officers, the affidavit stated. She also could not recall a specific threat from Aguilar and stated he made no attempt to get into the residence.

Officers executing a search warrant recovered the firearm, which was a revolver, the affidavit stated. Ralls was confirmed to have been convicted of a felony in the 1980s.

Aguilar received surgery to remove a bullet from his upper-right chest at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center and was expected to make a full recovery, according to the affidavit.

Ralls was not initially booked by officers due to his age and health, the affidavit stated. He was later issued a summons to appear in court on Sept. 7, according to court documents.

As details of the elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, continue to unfold, San Francisco Giants manager Gabe Kapler wrote on Friday that he is “not okay with the state of this country” and that he “felt like a coward” for not protesting “the lack of delivery on the promise of what our national anthem represents.”

Kapler told reporters before Friday’s series opener at Cincinnati that, moving forward, he doesn’t plan on taking the field for the national anthem “until I feel better about the direction of our country” and that he needs more time to consider specific actions he might suggest be taken to prevent more tragedies of this type, such as stronger gun control laws.

“I don’t expect it to move the needle necessarily,” Kapler said of his decision not to take the field for the anthem. “It’s just something that I feel strongly enough about to take that step.”

Kapler, in a blog post published earlier Friday on his lifestyle brand website, said he was disappointed in himself for not making some sort of protest during the playing of the national anthem Wednesday.

An 18-year-old gunman killed 19 children and two teachers Tuesday at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. In Buffalo, New York, 10 people were killed May 14 when an 18-year-old gunman opened fire in a supermarket. Both gunmen were using AR-15-style assault rifles.

“When I was the same age as the children in Uvalde, my father taught me to stand for the pledge of allegiance when I believed my country was representing its people well or to protest and stay seated when it wasn’t. I don’t believe it is representing us well right now,” Kapler wrote.

“… Every time I place my hand over my heart and remove my hat, I’m participating in a self congratulatory glorification of the ONLY country where these mass shootings take place. On Wednesday, I walked out onto the field, I listened to the announcement as we honored the victims in Uvalde. I bowed my head. I stood for the national anthem. Metallica riffed on City Connect guitars.”

Kapler said he wanted to make some sort of gesture, but said he was conscious that it could be misunderstood as an act meant to be offensive “to the military, to veterans, to themselves.”

“My brain said drop to a knee; my body didn’t listen. I wanted to walk back inside; instead I froze. I felt like a coward. I didn’t want to call attention to myself. I didn’t want to take away from the victims or their families.

“… But I am not okay with the state of this country. I wish I hadn’t let my discomfort compromise my integrity. I wish that I could have demonstrated what I learned from my dad, that when you’re dissatisfied with your country, you let it be known through protest. The home of the brave should encourage this.”

Only seven Giants were on the field — two coaches in front of the dugout, four players along the left-field line and an athletic trainer standing alongside them — when “The Star-Spangled Banner” was played at Great American Ball Park before Kapler and Reds manager David Bell exchanged lineup cards. The game started after a 2-hour, 8-minute rain delay.

Kapler said he “was not in my best place mentally” on the day of the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde.

“I knew that it was in connection with some of the hypocrisies for the national anthem and how it coincided with the moment of silence and how two things didn’t synch up well for me, but I couldn’t make sense of it in real time and it took me a couple of days to pull all my thoughts together,” Kapler said Friday.

Kapler is the latest example of how several notable sports figures — including Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr — have used their platforms over the past few days to plead for action to combat gun violence.

On Thursday, the social media teams for the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees collaborated in an effort to raise awareness about gun violence in the United States. Throughout the game, the teams posted identical facts — attributing where they got them — in concert with each other to their combined 4.25 million followers on Twitter.

A shooting in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood left one person dead Wednesday, according to police.

The shooting was reported at 3:19 am in the first block of Leavenworth Street.

The victim was later identified as Byron Cheeves Jr., 36, of Antioch.

San Francisco police said an arrest has been made in the case, but they did not immediately release any details about the suspect or the circumstances of the shooting.

OAKLAND — A man has been arrested in the fatal highway shooting of Gene Ransom, a basketball star at the University of California, Berkeley in the 1970s and a member of the Cal Athletics hall of fame.

A 25-year-old San Francisco resident, Juan Angel Garcia, was arrested Saturday and could face a murder charge in connection with the shooting Friday evening on Interstate 880 in Oakland, the California Highway Patrol said. It wasn’t known Sunday if Garcia had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

The victim was driving near the Broadway exit when he was shot, causing him to veer his Honda sedan and crash into a guardrail, the highway patrol said in a statement. The man was struck at least once and died in his car, the highway patrol said.

Ransom, 65, was on his way to pick up his girlfriend at a West Oakland train station, said Doug Harris, a former teammate and longtime friend.

Harris told KPIX-TV in San Francisco that the woman waited for ransom for hours, “not knowing that he had been murdered.”

Highway patrol investigators said the victim was likely targeted and the motive appeared to be road rage. Northbound lanes of I-880 were shut for about five hours during the investigation.

Just 5-feet-9-inches (1.8 meters) tall, Ransom was a standout player at Berkeley High School and went on to be a star point guard at Cal in the late 1970s, where he averaged 14.8 points per game and had 356 assists during a three-year career, KPIX said.

“We are shocked to hear the reports that Cal Athletics Hall of Famer Gene Ransom has been identified as a victim in a deadly freeway shooting,” Cal Athletics assistant director of communications Gerrit Van Genderen said in a statement Saturday. “Gene was one of the greatest players in our men’s basketball program’s history and he will be greatly missed.”

Ransom was signed by the Golden State Warriors in 1979 but was cut in the preseason.

Harris said that over the past 20 years he and Ransom had been coaching basketball and working with kids to get them away from gun violence.

“The very thing that we worked so hard for is what took him away. It’s really tough for me as I reflect back,” Harris told KPIX. “Gene was a heroic figure that was loved by everyone.”

Several people have been killed in recent freeway shootings in Oakland. Last month, an Alameda County sheriff’s recruit was fatally shot on Interstate 580 on Jan. 4 as he drove home from the academy. Authorities said David V. Nguyen, 28, was set to graduate from the academy this month.

In November, a 23-month-old toddler from Fremont was killed by a stray bullet while his family traveled south on Interstate 880 in Oakland. Also in November, a passenger in an SUV that was traveling on Interstate 80 in Oakland was killed during a shooting on the freeway near the Bay Bridge toll plaza.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — A juvenile was shot in broad daylight near San Francisco’s Union Square Tuesday afternoon, according to San Francisco police.

Officers responded around 2:20 p.m. to a report of a shooting on Stockton Street. They found a juvenile male suffering from a gunshot wound.
