A team of researchers from King's College London, the University of Arizona and ECONorthwest has found that an estimated 1.1 million urban residents in the United States live in homes without proper indoor plumbing. In their paper published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the group describes their analysis of census data for 50 of the largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. and what they learned about people living without standard indoor plumbing and related amenities.

In advanced countries such as the United States, most people are assumed to have basic amenities such as access to clean water and related facilities. In this new effort, researchers have found that this is not the case for many people living in some of the country's largest cities. In reality, many people, especially minorities, live indoors without proper plumbing.

The work involved analyzing data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the federal agency that conducts nationwide surveys every ten years. To learn more about access to running water, researchers focused on data from whether people had access to “full sanitation,” meaning a bath or shower. They found that for about 500,000 households in large urban areas, the answer was no.

Analyzing the data further, the researchers found that about 1.1 million people lived in such households. They also found a connection between a given city's wealth gap and the number of people living without running water. For example, they found that percent-wealthy cities like San Francisco, Portland and Austin had some of the highest rates of what they call plumbing poverty. Using raw numbers, they found that New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco had the most people living in plumbing poverty. They also found that race played a role. On average, blacks were 35 percent more likely to live in plumbing poverty than whites. They also found that sanitation poverty was most commonly found in rented facilities, particularly mobile homes.

Sneezing and wheezing your way through a day is not something any of us like to do and some of us suffer from seasonal allergies more than others. Something called the 2022 Allergy Capitals conducted a study of 100 of our nation’s cities and Connecticut has 2 in the top 10 of the nation’s worst for seasonal allergies.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America conducted the 2022 Allergy Capitals study of “The Most Challenging Places To Live With Allergies.” They took 100 American cities and looked at several factors including Spring pollen scores, Fall pollen scores, Over-the-counter medicine use, and more for the rankings. I have said this before and I will say it again, we absolutely love analytics in this building, and here is another excellent example of metrics making life better, sort of. We live in an area with a lot of pollen, I get these alerts quite a bit:

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, Hartford came in number 7 and New Haven at number 9 on the list of the MOST challenging places to live with allergies. From the website:

The top 10 most challenging places to live with seasonal allergies are:

Scranton, Pennsylvania

Wichita, Kansas

McAllen, Texas

Richmond, Va

San Antonio, Texas

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Hartford, Connecticut

Buffalo, NY

New Haven, Connecticut

Albany, New York

The top 10 least challenging places to live with seasonal allergies are:

Fresno, California

Phoenix, Ariz

Provo, Utah

Denver, Colo

Sacramento, California

Portland, Oregon

San Jose, California

San Francisco, California

Durham, North Carolina

Seattle, Washington

Woman snowing

Getty Images

If you aren’t affected by seasonal allergies, you are lucky and I guess you can live anywhere you want without a problem at all. I am a Claritan type of guy, have to be to breathe properly. Thanks again for hanging out and see you again really soon.

Many Californians would love to stay in a luxury hotel during a trip, but not everyone can afford it.

Luckily, CashNetUSA compiled a list of the cheapest luxury hotels in each state that are perfect for anyone’s next vacation.

This is the top rated fast food chain in California

Researchers were able to identify the cheapest luxury hotel one-night stay rates by searching Hotel.com. The hotels included in the study each had the same proposed check-in and out dates.

When information regarding the cheapest five-star hotel wasn’t available, four-star hotel rates were included instead.

In California, the lowest-priced luxury hotel is the Mansion of Sutter in San Francisco, and a one-night stay at the five-star hotel will cost $261, according to the finance website.

While there are plenty of cheaper hotel stay alternatives in the Golden State, hotel guests at Mansion of Sutter can enjoy free WIFI throughout the property, a pool, a 24-hour gym, concierge services, and travel and tourism assistance, along with other perks .

The study found that the cheapest luxury hotel rate was at a DoubleTree by Hilton Deadwood at Cadillac Jack’s in South Dakota. One-night rates there were only $73, according to the study.

The most expensive rate was found at a Four Seasons Resort in Jackson, Wyoming. A one night stay would cost $2,805.

Dive Brief:

In Oregon, a switch to sales of only zero-emissions residential heating and cooling appliances by 2030 could nearly halve climate pollution by 2035 while increasing electricity demand from homes and buildings 13% by the middle of the century, according to a recent report from Synapse Energy Economics.

The report, prepared for the Sierra Club, found that making this transition could lead to $1.1 billion in gas and electric system savings for the residential and commercial sector through 2050, with cost savings beginning in 2030.

The city of Eugene is currently developing a local policy to wean developers off natural gas in new construction, making it the first in Oregon to do so. The state is aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% from 1990 levels by 2050.

Dive Insight:

Meeting Oregon’s climate goals will mean reducing the carbon footprint of residential and commercial buildings, which currently produce 35% of the state’s carbon dioxide emissions, according to the report. One approach is to electrify building appliances and systems and switch to efficient electric heat pumps.

There are two types of heat pumps, according to Fred Heutte, senior policy associate with the NW Energy Coalition: those that can provide air heating and air conditioning and those that provide hot water.

“We’re poised to do a pretty big upward market transformation [with] both kinds of heat pumps in the next few years,” Heutte said, adding that the recent Synapse report builds on work that has been happening in the state for a long time. The transition to heat pumps represents a shift away from natural gas heating as well as older styles of electric resistance heating, he said, which tend to not be as efficient.

The report took a closer look at two electrification pathways: one that assumes a 100% market share for efficient electrical systems by 2025 and another that reaches that goal by 2030. The more-aggressive 2025 deadline would reduce carbon emissions by 56% by 2035, according to the report, while increasing electricity consumption 12% by 2030, and 13% by the middle of the century.

The 2030 pathway, meanwhile, would reduce emissions by 47% by 2035 while increasing electricity demand by 10% by 2030 and 13% by 2050. These efforts will likely lower energy system costs in both scenarios, the study found: The 2030 pathway is estimated to lead to $1.1 billion in savings through 2050, while the 2025 pathway saves around $1.7 billion in the same timeframe.

Heat pump technology can also help the power system by shifting load around, according to Heutte, because they can be scheduled to operate outside of peak electricity demand hours, essentially functioning like a kind of battery storage.

“In effect, what you’re doing is shifting the renewable energy from when it’s generated to when it’s needed,” he explained, by, for instance, pre-heating water or pre-cooling a house. “All those things are basically smart ways to manage the customer side of energy use.”

Moreover, the report shows that because of the high efficiency of heat pump technology, electricity consumption in residential buildings in Oregon would actually decrease even as the amount of homes using electricity for heating and water heating doubles, Dylan Plummer, senior campaign representative with Sierra Club , said in an email.

The main challenge standing in the way of widespread adoption of heat pump technology is ensuring that the financial burden of the transition does not fall on historically marginalized households, according to Plummer.

“That is why organizations across the State are working to put in place policies at all levels of government to fund targeted retrofit programs to ensure that the clean energy transition has values of economic and racial equity at its core,” he said.
