Before firefighters had even arrived, teachers and students from Rosa Parks Elementary watched as smoke was coming out of the residential building.

The schoolyard is right behind the apartment complex.

“I yelled for my amazing co-workers to clear the yard and move the kids away from the fire,” said Cicily Ina-Lee a teacher who, along with her colleague Vincent Reyes, ran toward the apartments.

Both teachers pulled down the fire escape ladders. Reyes went inside to rescue residents.

“I went inside the building here when the fire first started. I saw the fire it was pretty heavy on the roof and that’s when I saw the last person hopefully come out of the building,” Reyes explained.

One of the residents, who did not want to give us her name, described the teachers’ efforts. “And they were screaming and knocking and calling and trying to get us out and when the doors opened they went in and rescued the old people. They were fantastic,” the resident said. She managed to take her two parakeets with her.

Josh Gant was walking in the area when he saw some of the other victims being taken away.

“They were bringing one lady out, she was burnt really badly on her face and hands. Then they brought another lady out, she had smoke all over her and they brought another lady out, smoke all over her, and they were all like 80 years old, I guess,” added Gant.

Eighteen people were displaced in what exhausted firefighters described as a fast-moving blaze. It was a rescue effort aided by two teachers who thought of their neighbors first.

“We’re teachers, so we care about other people. Hopefully anybody would do the same things,” said Reyes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

OAKLAND (CBS SF) — The Oakland Education Association on Sunday announced it was planning a one-day teacher strike this Friday over planned permanent school closures and what the group called “unfair labor practices.”

The official Oakland Education Association Twitter account posted information about the strike Sunday afternoon. In addition to pickets outside of Oakland Unified School District schools starting at 6:30 am on Friday, April 29, the post said there would also be an OEA block party at the Lake Amphitheater.

“OEA is launching a new contract campaign for safe and racially just community schools for all Oakland students!” the message read. The organization is pushing to garner support as they negotiate their next three-year contract with the district.

For months, the OEA — along with Oakland Unified parents and students — have been protesting planned closures approved by district officials earlier this year.

According to the plan, Brookfield Elementary, Carl B. Munck Elementary, Grass Valley Elementary, Horace Mann Elementary and Korematsu Discovery Academy will close in the 2022-2023 school year, while Hillcrest K-8 would close its middle school grades. Rise Community Elementary and New Highland Academy will merge this year into one school.

Oakland Unified issued a letter in response to the strike announcement later Sunday afternoon. It read in part:

“The purported basis for this potential strike is in protest over the consolidation of district schools. If this is correct, we demand that OEA immediately cease and desist from moving forward with this strike.

There is no legal basis for any concerted activity that would justify a strike or refusal to perform services benefiting District students. OEA is strongly encouraged to consult with its legal counsel before counting any votes, before announcing any results, and especially before taking any actual action. To be clear, any strike, other withholding of unit member services, or other concerted activity that disrupts the education of District students would be unlawful and an unfair labor practice, a violation of the current collective bargaining agreement between the District and OEA, and a
violation of the EERA.

More importantly, the impact on students would be significant. In light of the lost instruction due to the pandemic, OEA and OUSD worked hard together to ensure that in-person instruction was the norm for this school year. Even the threat of again depriving students of instruction, let alone an actual deprivation, especially without legal justification, will only further hurt students.”

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) — After a three-night “sleep-in” inside San Francisco Unified School District offices, teachers demanding pay from the district said they reached an agreement with the district late Thursday.

On Monday, more than a dozen SFUSD educators began the sleep-in, calling for the district to pay more than 1,000 teachers and other staff members who have gone unpaid or only received partial paychecks since January.

The educators have said because of the payment issue, they’ve been unable to pay rent, mortgages, medical bills, and other necessities.

District officials have said that while the majority of its more than 10,000 employees have been paid correctly, a portion of educators went unpaid due to a technical error attributed to the district switching to a new payroll system, replacing an older system that had been in place for the last 17 years.

Under the agreement, the district will pay all educators owed money, as well as interest for the late payments.

Additionally, the district has promised to address any payroll errors moving forward within 72 hours. Also, the district will reimburse the affected educators for any late fees and penalties incurred.

“This occupation was the result of months and months of trying to negotiate with the district and trying to ask that folks get paid what they’re due,” said teacher and United Educators of San Francisco member Frank Lara said during a Thursday evening rally outside the district offices.

“It’s been exhausting for all of us,” he said.

“I cannot thank enough the families and the community partners who’ve come out and offered us their food, their support,” UESF president Cassondra Curiel said. “Your help and support got management to make moves and we know we’re on the same page. Now there will be less stress and people will be paid for the jobs that they’re doing.”

“We remain committed to ensuring every staff member receives all of the pay they are owed,” SFUSD Superintendent Vincent Matthews said in a statement. “I want to again extend my deepest apologies to every employee who has been impacted in any way as a result of our transition to a new payroll system.”

According to the district, the new agreement also ensures that all employees will be able to input COVID-19 sick leave, including any sick leave that COVID-19-related that has already been taken. Additionally, the district is also offering 10 additional COVID-19 sick days of leave for employees.

UESF officials are expected to hold a rally to celebrate the agreement on Friday at 5 pm at the SFUSD parking lot, located at 555 Franklin St.

The payment issues come as the district is dealing with other financial woes — a $125 projected budget shortfall — and considering laying off hundreds of teachers and other staff to balance the budget.

Also, on Friday, district officials announced enrollment preparations for the upcoming school year. So far, 14,127 families have submitted enrollment applications, slightly up from last school year when 13,917 families submitted applications.

San Francisco educators are spending a third night at district headquarters, demanding that the district pay them.

SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco educators are spending a third night at district headquarters, demanding that the district pay them what they are owed.

Hundreds of teachers and other staff members have gone unpaid or only received partial paychecks since January.

The United Educators of San Francisco for months there have been ongoing issues with pay and benefits.

“January and February payroll cycles left hundreds of educators scrambling to cover rent, bills, and overdraft fees after they noticed that whole or partial checks went unpaid by SFUSD,” the labor union said.

Since Monday, several San Francisco Unified School District educators have been sleeping inside the district’s offices, and they are committed to staying as long as they have to.

Leslie Hu, a community schools coordinator at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, has spent the last two nights on the floor in her sleeping bag.

San Francisco teachers occupy district headquarters, demand their paychecks

San Francisco educators are occupying the third floor of the school district’s headquarters for the second day in a row. They are demanding their paychecks after a technical glitch with a new payroll system has held up their earnings since January.

“We shouldn’t have to be here. We should be at home with our families in our own beds, but we will continue to stay if that is what it takes to ensure that educators can pay their rent and bills on time,” Hu said. We have made it clear that we would pack up our bags and go home right now if we could get a guaranteed timeline that any future payroll issues will be resolved within a reasonable amount of time moving forward.”

SFUSD officials have admitted that hundreds of teachers and other staff members have not gotten paid since January but attributed the error to a recent change by the district to a new payroll system. Previously, the district had used the same system for the last 17 years.

Superintendent Vincent Matthews said in a statement on Monday the district is working diligently on correcting the issue, including adding at least ten more staff members to its payroll department to help investigate and solve the issue.

“In spite of a lot of preparation, there are serious payroll related issues that have arisen since transitioning to a new employee information system. This is inexcusable and should not have happened,” he said. “It is SFUSD’s responsibility to pay its employees accurately and on time. We deeply apologize to every employee who has experienced a delay in payment. I have asked our chief technology officer to move to this project 100 percent until further notice. We are committed to resolving this emergency as quickly as possible. Every staff member will be paid the money they are owed.”

The payment issues come as the district and the San Francisco Board of Education are mulling laying off hundreds of teachers and other staff to balance the budget for the upcoming school year as the district faces a $125 projected budget shortfall.

SFUSD officials said the while hundreds of staff members have been affected, the majority of the district’s more than 10,000 employees have been paid correctly.

UESF officials have said they plan to file a lawsuit if the payment issue isn’t remedied.

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – San Francisco teachers and union members are at the district office now, saying they will not leave until hundreds of educators are paid.

There was a rally held at the district office yesterday with the union demanding the district pay the hundreds of people who haven’t received a correct paycheck since January.

Many of them now are saying they are unable to pay bills, rent and mortgages.

After the rally, union leaders marched up to the superintendent’s office saying they will not leave until these payroll issues get fixed.

The superintendent says the district knows this is inexcusable and they are working as quickly as they can to get this fixed.

The district says the payroll department transitioned to a new system, replacing the one the district used for 17 years, which caused many issues.

The district says 10,000 employees have received accurate paychecks, but hundreds have not.

The district admitted to kron four that they are not moving as fast as they should on this due to continued training on the new system and issues within it.

The district says these are the actions they are taking to make sure checks are cut ASAP.

The district is creating a support ticketing system to keep track of every employee who has been underpaid or not paid at all.

Secondly, the district is scheduling phone appointment opportunities.

The district says they are moving ten people from other roles to help support payroll get this done quicker.

Lastly, they are opening an onsite payment issue intake clinic at the district offices.

There was no timeframe given as to when teachers will get paid by the district.

Teachers say they cannot wait any longer as they are struggling to get by.

Amid a dayslong heat wave in Massachusetts, the Boston Teachers Union said Monday temperatures reached above 80 degrees in classrooms and called for improvements to air conditioning in schools.

The union on Monday posted 22 photos to a Facebook album that appeared to show temperatures of upwards of 80 degrees that were recorded inside. It wasn’t clear in which schools the photos were taken.

Boston Public Schools said in a statement that officials are communicating with schools to ensure those without air conditioning systems have “two fans operating in each classroom and learning space.”

BPS also said they have issued guidance with school leaders to suggest limited outdoor activity, frequent water breaks for students, and keeping learning spaces cool by minimizing use of overhead lights and using blinds to block sunlight.

“BPS has also worked to make sure that HVAC systems are fully functioning in schools that have them,” the statement said. “Additionally, BPS shared guidance with school leaders suggesting that teachers limit outdoor activity, schedule cool-down breaks for students between lessons, and distance students so they may remove their masks whenever possible. There is a large supply of water for students to drink at each school and we ask that educators keep students hydrated with frequent water breaks throughout the day, regardless of activity level. BPS also encouraged school leaders and staff to take measures to keep learning spaces cool including minimizing the use of overhead lights, opening windows and operating fans, and closing shades and blinds to block sunlight.”

Boston reached 90 degrees for the fourth day in a row, marking the first official heat wave of the season. At 1 p.m. on Tuesday, it was 93 degrees in Boston, said National Weather Service Meteorologist Alan Durham, and temperatures in eastern Massachusetts ranged from 92 to 94 degrees.

In anticipation of the scorching heat, some school districts said over the weekend that they would be releasing students early on Monday and Tuesday.

Students at Worcester Public Schools were released three hours early on Monday and Tuesday, and students in Lexington, Wellesley, Stoneham, Winchester, Braintree, Springfield, Watertown, Lowell, Wilmington, Westford, and Holyoke were also dismissed early due to the heat.

All after-school activities were canceled for Boston students, according to BPS.

California Shatters Daily Record For New COVID Cases, Deaths
California is seeing the worst days of the coronavirus pandemic, reporting more than 53,000 new cases and 293 deaths on Wednesday, both new daily records while hospitals struggle to absorb a surge in patients. The state has seen coronavirus cases and hospitalizations soar in recent weeks. Hospitals are filling up so fast that officials are rolling out mobile field facilities and scrambling to hire doctors and nurses, while the state is distributing 5,000 body bags mostly to the hard-hit Los Angeles and San Diego areas and has 60 refrigerated trailers standing by as makeshift morgues. Solano Health Officer Worries Order Won’t Slow Spread, Some ‘Aren’t Going To Be Persuaded’
FAIRFIELD — As all Bay Area counties are set to enter a stay-at-home order due to ICU capacity dropping below 15%, Solano County’s health officer worries the latest order will not stop the surge in COVID-19 cases. In Solano County, ICU capacity has dropped to 13%. Public Health Officer Dr. Bela Matyas said the surge in cases and hospitalizations can be directly linked to Thanksgiving and he doubts people will change their ways for Christmas. “I think this is going to be a really, really tough holiday season. It really will be,” Matyas told KPIX 5 on Wednesday. Matyas is basing his belief over what has happened over the last week and a half. The health officer said 13 deaths can be traced back to holiday get-togethers. “Family members are dying because of having attended Thanksgiving events that were not run properly,” says Matyas. Ultracold Freezers For Pfizer Shot Arrive In San Mateo County With Distribution Set To Begin
SAN MATEO — Two sub-zero freezers slated to store thousands of doses of the Pfizer vaccine for COVID-19 have arrived in San Mateo County, county officials said Wednesday. The freezers at San Mateo Medical Center will store allotments for the county’s health department and for Seton Medical Center, and vaccines for other acute hospitals will be shipped directly to the respective hospitals. “These freezers are a really big deal only when we look at the Pfizer vaccine because it needs to be stored at -70 degrees while the Moderna vaccine just needs to be freezing,” Dr. Anand Chabra, county COVID-19 mass vaccination section chief and Family Health Services medical director, said. “Because of its formulation, in order to be viable it needs to be stored this way and the other thing is that there are no preservatives in there.” County hospitals may start vaccinations as early as Thursday, as the county has already received its first allotment of 5,850 Pfizer vaccines on Tuesday. California Exodus? Growth Rate At Record Low As More People Leave
SAN FRANCISCO — More people are leaving California than moving here, continuing a trend that coupled with fewer births has slowed the growth rate in the nation’s most populous state to a record low amid a pandemic that is reshaping its future. Officially, California added 21,200 people from July 1, 2019, to July 1, 2020, increasing the state’s population a paltry 0.05% to 39.78 million people — still by far the most of any state. But the bigger news from Wednesday’s new population estimate was that 135,600 more people left the state than moved here. San Jose Places Caps On Food Delivery Service Fees
SAN JOSE — Santa Clara County and the South Bay’s largest city, San Jose, both approved caps on food delivery service fees Tuesday in an effort to protect struggling small businesses in the wake of COVID-19. The county’s temporary ordinance caps delivery fees for third-party delivery services, like Uber Eats or DoorDash, at 15 percent of the purchase price for orders and at 10 percent for pickup/takeout orders from any restaurant. The emergency regulation goes into effect on Saturday and expires once restaurants can resume indoor operations or at the county’s discretion. “The current pandemic unfortunately creates opportunity for price gouging,” Supervisor Joe Simitian said. “That’s the problem we’re tackling.” Since restaurants were required to close both indoor and outdoor operations earlier this month, they have had to rely on pickup and delivery orders to sustain themselves into the next year. CoCo Supes Ask State to Prioritize Teachers for Vaccines
MARTINEZ — The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors formally asked the state this week to consider teachers as “essential workers” and thus among the first people to receive COVID-19 vaccinations. In its request to Gov. Gavin Newsom and state health officials, the board stated that vaccinating teachers and all other school personnel at public, private and any other schools, the supervisors said, will better prepare them for reopening schools as early as possible. “We’re taking the initiative here … to convey to the state, as it develops its vaccine priorities, that we want all school personnel to be prioritized as essential workers,” Supervisor John Gioia said Tuesday. Distance learning, he said, is not necessarily effective, especially in communities of color, and reopening schools as soon as it’s safe is important. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Debuts ‘Holiday In The Park’ Drive-Thru Experience
VALLEJO — What used to be a walk-thru holiday experience is now a drive-thru one. For the first time ever, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom redesigned “Holiday in the Park” to entertain people from their cars. It is the only such event in a Northern California theme park. The 20-minute ride features festive displays and more than a million lights choreographed to music, along a mile-long stretch. “It was really cool that they’re adapting to COVID, so that we can drive through and still enjoy the lights,” said Mckenzie Salinas of Rohnert Park.
