SAN FRANCISCO – From car break-ins to shoplifting, much has been said about property crime in San Francisco. For one set of victims, theft doesn’t just come with a cost, it’s making it difficult to work.

“Remodel,” contractor Dan McCann explained as he walked through a home under renovation in Oakland. “Total interior. Addition, front and back.”

From full remodels in the Oakland Hills, to foundation replacements in San Francisco.

“One section at a time,” he said of another project in Haight-Ashbury. “So the house doesn’t fall down.”

McCann is a city native who built his contracting business from scratch, now employing teams of workers on various sites. For all of the complexities that come with running jobs around the bay, his work in San Francisco has presented one particular challenge.

            CBS

“We usually bring the tools home, but one day we left everything here,” McCann told KPIX 5. “Maybe somebody was staking us out. They broke the lock off, let themselves in. Three jackhammers, a concrete saw. A bunch of smaller items. It came out to about $14,000 worth of equipment.”

“The ladder isn’t on it, no pipe racks,” plumber Tony Campos said of his work van.

Campos is another victim, even though he tries to keep his van as inconspicuous as possible.

Had a couple jobs like Dan’s where we had all of our equipment, all of our plumbing gear, all of our tools stolen,” Campos said of his experience with thieves. “I’ve had one of my cars broken into, in my garage, everything taken from that.”

“This is the third time I’ve been hit pretty big,” McCann added.

The third time convinced him to take on another job, tracking down his stolen property, and he said it wasn’t that hard to find: A resale website and a seller who may not be the thief, but has thousands of items for sale.

“This is the guy who tried to sell me my stuff back,” McCann said, pointing to an online profile. “You can see here, 2,600 items sold on OfferUp. So I met up with him.”

Zeroing in on the saw he recognized, McCann set up a parking lot meeting in which he confronted the seller. They demanded proof of a serial number, which he produced the following day.

“Gave him the serial number the next day,” McCann said. “He told me I made a fake receipt and he wouldn’t meet up with me. Told me to call the cops and have them come deal with it. The cops want me to find him again before they do anything about it. So that what a frustrating thing.”

Police say they cannot comment, as they now have several ongoing investigations into the fencing of stolen property. They encourage everyone to record serial numbers, and put distinct markings on tools in case they do go up for sale. This is a frequent, and costly problem.

“Not only in money and what those tools cost us, but in time,” Campos said of his experiences.

“Missing a day at work, or missing a couple days of work because we have no tools could be a big problem for most of my workers,” McCann said for his crew.

Not one to quit on a job, McCann now has a private investigator working to build a case that he hopes to pass on to police. A mission borne out of frustration.

“These burglaries are devastating to contractors, like myself,” McCann said. “These criminals have made a business off of stealing the livelihood of honest people. Hopefully we can start catching these guys.”

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — An Independence handyman said thieves were caught on camera stealing tools from his work truck at a local church.

A Kansas City, Missouri man saw the videos and believes his stolen truck was used to commit the crime.

“He walked over here, picked up a brick, carried it and smashed it right through the glass,” Chris Bryant said, telling FOX4 about his tools being stolen and his work truck being damaged.

Bryant said the Thanksgiving Day video showed two thieves smashing a window and stealing over $4,000 worth of tools from the truck.

Bryant works as a handyman for the Independence Church, where this happened. He said he was up the street at the time eating Thanksgiving dinner.

Deputys: Drugs found in Little Debbie’s box during a traffic stop in Arkansas

“That makes you a little sad,” Bryant said.

Bryant’s family posted the videos online in hopes of identifying the thieves. They say they’ve since seen people selling valuable tools online.

“Don’t buy them, don’t endorse them, because sooner or later your tools could be next,” Bryant said.

Austin Stephens said he recognized his truck in the videos.

“I’m 100% sure that’s my truck,” Stephens said.

Stephens said he only heated up his truck for a few minutes on the morning of November 22 and someone took it from his driveway in Kansas City.

“It’s disappointing that my truck is being used for other crimes across the city and that other people are suffering as well,” Stephens said.

Stephens added concern that the thieves had returned.

He said once they set off a car alarm and on another occasion someone could be seen getting out of a car and trying to get into his garage, which was locked.

Both families want whoever is doing this to be stopped.

“I also want to be able to have that peace of mind and know that we’re not being terrorized all the time,” Stephens said. “It would be nice if these people were caught and solved.”

Kansas City Officer Recognized for Arresting KCK Murder Suspect

Online crime data from the Independence Police show 32 vehicle and car thefts since November 22.

Officials say they historically see a spike in this type of crime at this time of year when people are warming up their cars or have valuable gifts inside.

“Get your life in order and leave other people’s lives alone,” Bryant said.

FOX4 confirmed that the Independence Police passed the information to KCPD to try to connect the cases and work together.

KCPD reported a three percent decrease in vehicle thefts from November 1st.

A global survey of the sector shows COVID-19 is moving to the cloud faster for nonprofits, but planning, skills and resource gaps remain.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 22, 2021 / PRNewswire / – TechSoup, the leading not-for-profit network facilitating the distribution of technology solutions to civil society organizations worldwide, today released the results of the largest global civil society research study ever conducted to understand computing practices and digital readiness of nonprofits and identify ways organizations like TechSoup can drive digital transformation of nonprofits and improve the impact on the sector.

TechSoup logo (PRNewsfoto / TechSoup)

The study, commissioned by TechSoup and supported in part by a generous grant from Okta for Good, interviewed 11,758 civil society technology decision-makers in 135 countries and in 41 languages. Survey distribution partners included TechSoup Global Network, BoardSource, Center for Social Impact and Philanthropy, Civicus, Institute for the Development of Social Investment, Technology Association of Grantmakers, RNW Media, Transparency and Accountability Initiative, and WINGS.

“Okta for Good is proud to sponsor this global research project that is providing valuable insights into the digital needs of nonprofits,” said Erin Baudo Filzer, Vice President for Social Impact and Sustainability at Okta. “The scope and scope of this study shows a sector that is making significant strides but needs better tools and programs to thrive in an increasingly digital world.”

“As a global alliance of organizations and activists committed to empowering citizenship and civil society around the world, it is critical that we understand the digital state of civil society around the world,” added Amy Taylor, Chief Networks Officer of Civicus. “With its global reach and comprehensive analysis of organizations’ needs and capabilities, this study helps define how activists and organizations engage in a digital world to serve, support, engage and inspire our most vulnerable communities. “

The story goes on

The study, carried out in summer 2020, asked companies about IT resources, digital readiness, data management and the effects of COVID-19. The most important findings include:

Tech Budgets: IT budgets are typically low but are likely to increase over the next 2 years. Most decisions about IT products and services are made at the employee level, with an average purchase size of $ 375 Need permits. The number of people working on an IT team is limited and volunteers are often used.

Transition Ready ?: A quarter of nonprofits have a defined strategy for achieving digital readiness. The biggest barriers to digital adoption, digital enhancement, and data management are cost, employee training, and availability.

Data processing: Most organizations collect recipient, donor, and financial information. Across all data types, cloud-based data storage is the most widely used option today.

Killer App: Organizations rely on spreadsheets for all aspects of data handling, including collecting, storing and sharing data.

Pandemic focus: The major negative effects of COVID-19 affected workflows across the company and prompted a rethinking of the way they work. Most programs, fundraising and marketing have been negatively impacted while internal communication has improved. COVID-19 has sparked digital adoption primarily in cloud-based apps, followed by hardware and desktop apps.

Need for Nonprofits: The adoption of cloud-based services, cybersecurity tools and other digital resources could be accelerated by increased funding, access to IT consultants / staff to facilitate digital transformation, staff skills or training and increased awareness of available digital tools become.

“Our global study is an important first step in moving beyond the rhetoric and conventional wisdom about nonprofits and technology,” said Chris Worman, TechSoup vice president of alliances and program development. “This gives us comprehensive baseline data that will enable us to hit the industry where it is and develop programs that support digital transformation and maturity so that our industry can thrive through digitization.”

To further explore the findings from the survey, TechSoup will convene a series of workshops with key stakeholders from civil society, foundations, government, business and the TechSoup community. In addition, a dashboard is created to share the data so that others can make their own inquiries and increase the collective benefit to the industry.

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) – San Francisco restaurants are poised to welcome guests again with the help of new technology. The city is expected to announce the move to the Red Steps on Tuesday.

When guests return to La Mar at the Embarcardero, the food and space look familiar. However, there is a patented technology hidden in its HVAC system that can safely clean the room air.

CONTINUE READING: Study: Reports of mass exodus from California in 2020 are false

It’s called NPBI from Global Plasma Solutions. The technology uses an electronic charge to create a plasma field filled with ions. They attach themselves to particles in the air.

“This has been used in restaurants in Japan where you kill the pathogens because you literally ionize them and they don’t – you ionize the air and they need hydrogen in the air and they can’t – and any virus is what lives in the air , can’t live. I think it would replace ventilation, ”said Monica Gandhi, infectious disease expert at UCSF.

Dr. Gandhi says the technology is a reasonable idea when San Francisco enters the Red Level. She emphasizes proper masking and distancing as critical to safety.

“When the technology is in place and they say it’s safe, let’s go and we’ll obviously monitor the numbers and see what happens,” said Jackie McAninch of San Francisco.

CONTINUE READING: 2-alarm fire is burning structure in San Jose next to Guadalupe Freeway

In SoMa, Wagyu-focused Japanese restaurant Gozu says a hospital-grade UV light disinfection system from UV Guardian will help welcome customers back to a safe and clean environment. UV-C systems can kill pathogens in the air and come into contact with the surface when no one is present.

“Both ions and UV light serve the same purpose – that whatever hangs in the air – is swept away with ventilation – is killed with UV light or ions in the air,” said Dr. Gandhi.

As part of the Red Tier, eating is permitted indoors with a capacity of 25 percent.

“I wouldn’t say I’d rather be indoors at this point, but I would say it’s definitely an option I’m looking forward to,” said Zan Foltyniak from San Francisco.

MORE NEWS: Rep. Eric Swalwell is suing President Trump, Trump Jr., Giuliani, over the Capitol uprising

The last time you were allowed to eat indoors in San Francisco was at the end of September. If the announcement is made on Tuesday, the city will officially move to the Red Plain on Wednesday.
