Chimney Sweep

The chimney sweep hanging up his brushes for love

Tonight’s Good Sort has spent close to half a century with his head up Wellington chimneys, but now, he’s hanging up the brushes for someone he loves.

Peter Davey was one of two other chimney sweeps when he came to the capital 43 years ago.

“They were both in their 70s, and I was 18, so I took Wellington by storm.”

Davey said it was a career choice that raised a few eyebrows.

“I was actually the dux in my college, so I think the teachers expected me to go on to much grander things, but I’m really happy with what I’ve done with my life.”

He said he did it all for the people he has met through the job, and now he’s “getting off the tools” to be with his wife Susan who has Parkinson’s disease.

“She’s been having falls of late, and I need to be with her.”
