John Lynch tossed the first stroke of the design cycle, traded two future picks from the first round for Selection No. 3 for the Dolphins, supplied a haymaker for the design assignment, and started the rumor mill for this year’s draft.
Make no mistake, the 49ers exchanged so much future capital to choose their future quarterback, and fans and analysts wondered aloud, who are the 49ers going to take? Will it be Alabama’s Mac Jones? Will Shanahan add the limitless potential of Justin Fields to his dynamic offense?

49ers NFL Draft Needs
- Quarterback: Surprise surprise. Even if Jimmy Garoppolo is currently at the top, the Niners trading at number 3 tell you that they think quarterback has a need to move forward. John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan will pick three passers-by, with Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson presumably disappearing from the board before choosing.
- Line of defense: Nick Bosa is very good even if he has dealt with injuries in recent years. San Fran needs help on the defensive, as DeForest Bruckner will be traded (but before the 2020 season) and Solomon Thomas will go into free hands.
- Cornerback: Richard Sherman is still a free agent. Jason Verrett has a history of injuries. The 49ers rush to pass will still be pretty good with Bosa on the sidelines, but he’ll need help from secondary school if he’s the only one expected to get to the passerby.
