‘Bake Off’ week 1: Who went house first?
‘Bake Off’ is back – but who’s gone home? (Channel 4)
The Great British Bake Off returned to TV tonight with a dramatic cake crash, a candidate who looked just like Prue Leith and has already said goodbye to his first baker.
Tom was the first baker to leave the tent after misinterpreting a task of baking an anti-gravity cake and presenting a slightly crooked step cake instead.

He said, “I’ve always been tougher with myself than I should have been, but I’m proud of myself, it says something.”

Meanwhile, the audience favorite Jürgen became the first star baker for his mini rolls with a Black Forest cake flavor and the gravity-defying reading lamp show stopper.
Entering the famous tent for the first time, attendees faced challenges including making a signature mini steak, a technical malt bread challenge, and an incredible show stopper where they had to make anti-gravity cakes.

However, Met Police Detective Amanda’s wave cake succumbed to gravity shortly after its assessment when it fell from her bench just as Lizzie was preparing to take her creation to the judges.
An audible gasp could be heard throughout the tent, although, luckily, Amanda’s cake had already been tried, while Chigs lost the floating portion of his cake to gravity when it fell to the ground as he placed it in front of Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.
It was the first chance for Bake Off fans to meet Series 12 contestants, including retired midwife Maggie, 70, who bore a striking resemblance to Leith in both looks and accent.

Hollywood joked, “Were you separated at birth?”
And host Noel Fielding told the well-spoken couple, “I love listening to you and Prue, I’ve never felt like a chimney sweep in my entire life. It’s like a Dickens novel. “
But Leith admitted that she was already fed up with the jokes about herself and Maggie winning the technical challenge.

She said, “I’m starting to hope Maggie will go out just to get rid of this joke.”
In this series, a number of bakers bring influences from their home countries and those of their families, including the expressionless German baker Jürgen, who impressed with a Black Forest mini bun and was a hit with fans with his dry sense of humor.

Giuseppe brought Italian influence into his first cake, Crystelle introduced her family’s Goan roots into her chai-flavored cake and George relied on Greek-Cypriot flavors in his creations.
Bake Off features a vegan candidate this year – Freya, who is the youngest baker at just 19.
She received praise for her vegan sponge roll, which uses aquafaba, a chickpea water residue, instead of eggs.
