With Christian McCaffrey, the San Francisco 49ers have one of the strongest offensive weapons and arguably the best running back in the sport. But since he is one of the favorites for the Super Bowl, his top priority in training camp is to build the necessary depth behind him.

December 10, 2023; Santa Clara, California, USA; San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey (23) stands next to wide receiver Deebo Samuel (19) and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk (11) after the 49ers gained a first down near the end zone against the Seattle Seahawks in the third quarter at Levi's Stadium.
McCaffrey accounted for 2,023 yards from scrimmage, representing 29 percent of the 49ers' total offense during San Francisco's Super Bowl season.

McCaffrey completed 272 carries and ran for 1,459 yards, a career high, as the focal point of the 49ers' offense.

At the very least, it might be wise for the 49ers to strike a balance this summer and find a capable backup to limit McCaffrey's load during the regular season.

Where does the battle for the San Francisco 49ers backup RB stand?

December 31, 2023; Landover, Maryland, USA; San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey (23) carries the ball as Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne (94) looks on during the second half at FedExField. Mandatory Photo Credit: Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

Last season, no other 49ers running back surpassed 300 yards, and head coach Kyle Shannahan seems to be wisely limiting Deebo Samuel's role in the running game.

It should not be too surprising that the 49ers invested a fourth-round pick in Isaac Guerendo as a possible replacement for McCaffrey.

However, ESPN's Nick Wagoner points out that Guerendo suffered an injury early in training camp, giving Cody Schrader the opportunity to get some important reps.

“After just the first practice of training camp, the competition for the 49ers' running backs has changed somewhat,” Wagoner writes. “Rookie running back Isaac Guerendo was forced to leave mid-practice with a hamstring injury, coach Kyle Shanahan said. Guerendo has been dealing with hamstring issues in Louisville, and if those issues persist, it could open up an opportunity for another rookie to make an impact.

“Undrafted rookie Cody Schrader has made a habit of overcoming adversity throughout his successful college career. With Guerendo out and star Christian McCaffrey taking on a limited workload to preserve him for the season, Schrader could have a chance to earn a spot on the roster in the coming days and weeks.”

Regardless of whether Guerendo recovers and improves his performance, Schrader takes his chance, or the 49ers look for reinforcements for their running back on the waiver list over the summer, San Francisco needs to make its running game more balanced.October 3, 2021; Santa Clara, Calif.; San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan takes the field before the game against the Seattle Seahawks at Levi's Stadium.
So, now Aaron Rodgers could actually be on the way there San Francisconot new York? Hmmmm… what the hell just happened here? Crap like this has turned so many people off of A-Rod over the years. All this nonsense with his vaccinations and The darkness retreats. A month ago, Rodgers talked about how ready he was to play in the Big Apple for the Jets and had his list of players he wanted to sign and this and that. On Wednesday, former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber mentioned that the 49ers could be a possibility after all the excitement surrounding Rodgers' move to NYC. This was a little nugget that FS1 host Craig Carton posted a few weeks earlier.

Aaron Rodgers on the verge of disaster | Trash Talkin' Tuesday

“This whole little simmer, it's not even like there's smoke coming out of this thing, it's just a little crackle of flames sprouting under the leaves that Aaron Rodgers is actually going to the 49ers and not the Jets now has one certain validity, ” Barber said Wednesday on “Tiki & Tierney.”

If any of this is true that the Niners want to snag the California native Rodgers, the Jets should be beside themselves. However, if the rumors are true that Jets owner Woody Johnson is holding up the trade because of concerns about a first-round pick if A-Rod retires, then it's his own fault if this all blows up in his face. Of course, the Jets would be right to screw up this deal. But Rodgers is not without his faults as he plays the role of a manipulative lover who tricks his new beau into making others jealous. Damn A-Rod, man. Can we just get something done here so everyone can move on and stop worrying about Rodgers until September? Please.

JAN 29 EAGLES BEAT 49ERS IN NFC CHAMPIONSHIP The Washington Commanders will watch their NFC East rival play in Super Bowl LVII in two weeks time.

The Philadelphia Eagles have claimed the first spot in the Super Bowl after a 31-7 win over the San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers’ game was defined by injuries to quarterbacks Brock Purdy and Josh Johnson as the Eagles cruised to a win thanks to 148 rushing yards.

The Eagles will play the winner of the Cincinnati Bengals vs. Kansas City Chiefs game.

JAN 29 BIENIEMY WAIT? Are the Commanders dragging their feet? Or just patiently playing by the rules?

Coach Ron Rivera has yet to hire an offensive coordinator to replace the fired Scott Turner, and the AFC title game on Sunday may be one reason why. The Commanders have put in a request for permission to interview Chiefs assistant Eric Bieniemy and according to NFL Network he’s “emerged as a potential key candidate” in D.C.

Bieniemy, who is also on the insources say. He also was request list of the Jets, Titans and Ravens, will work today in Chiefs vs. Bengals, after which Washington hopes to get a visit.

JAN 28 FOSTER COMEBACK? Former Washington Commanders linebacker Reuben Foster hasn’t played in the NFL since 2018, but he’s trying another comeback …

This time in the USFL.

Last time we checked in on Foster, the Seattle Seahawks hosted him for a summer workout. That didn’t work out, but Foster, now 28, this week will sign with the USFL’s Pittsburgh Maulers in another comeback attempt.

He was taken in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, despite an injury risk, and then in 2018 was dealt a two-game suspension after committing a weapons offense and a misdemeanor drug offense. Weeks later, Foster was arrested for domestic violence and the 49ers cut him shortly after

In 2019, Washington claimed Foster off waivers shortly after he was cut by San Francisco, but he never played a down as a member of the organization as during his first practice in 2019, Foster suffered a torn ACL and was placed on the injured reserve list. Still recovering from the injury a season later, he was placed on the PUP list at the beginning of training camp in 2020 … and there wasn’t much positive movement there before he was released.

JAN 20 LENO NAMED FINALIST FOR ALAN PAGE COMMUNITY AWARD Washington Commanders offensive tackle Charles Leno Jr. is one of five finalists for the NFLPA Alan Page Community Award, the “highest honor” the Players Association can give to someone.

Leno, along with Damar Hamlin (Buffalo Bills), Jonathan Jones (New England Patriots), Darren Waller (Las Vegas Raiders) and Devin White (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) are on the shortlist for the award.

Each player will receive a $10,000 donation to their charity of choice. The winner of the award will be announced on Feb. 8.

JAN 19 INTERNATIONAL HOSTS ANNOUNCED FOR 2023 The NFL announced that the Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots will each play international games during the 2023 regular season.

The Bills and the Titans will each play a game at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Jaguars will also being playing in the UK. And the 2023 season will also see the Chiefs and Patriots both play regular-season games in Germany.

The Commanders are scheduled to play the Patriots on the “road” next season, meaning that the game could take place in Germany. If the Commanders are tabbed to play the Patriots in Germany, it would mark just the second time Washington would head overseas for a game.

JAN 16 COWBOYS ELIMINATE TOM BRADY, BUCCANEERS The NFC East has three teams in the Divisional Round after the Dallas Cowboys beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-14 Monday night at Raymond James Stadium.

With the win, Tom Brady’s season comes to an end before he hits free agency this spring.

The Cowboys play the San Francisco 49ers Sunday night at 6:30 p.m.

JAN 15 NFC EAST RIVALS TO MEET IN DIVISIONAL ROUND The New York Giants are on to the Divisional Round after beating the Minnesota Vikings 31-24 Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium.

With the win, the Giants now face the Philadelphia Eagles next week in the Divisional Round.

The Dallas Cowboys are set to play Monday night against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to land the fourth and final spot in the next round.

JAN 14 NFL WILD CARD SATURDAY The beginning of the NFL playoffs kicked off with a bang Saturday.

After the San Francisco 49ers came back from trailing at halftime to win by three scores, the Jacksonville Jaguars managed a 27-point comeback (third-largest in NFL history) to beat the Los Angeles Chargers at home.

The lopsided start in the first half came thanks to five Jaguars turnovers … including four Trevor Lawrence interceptions.

But … the Chargers found a way to blow their four-touchdown lead to lose 31–30 in Jacksonville.

Lawrence rebounded by throwing three second-half touchdown passes to pace the comeback for Jacksonville.

The 49ers will host the highest-remaining NFC playoff team, while the Jaguars await their opponent based off of Sunday’s results.

JAN 13 JEREMY REAVES NAMED ALL-PRO Washington Commanders defensive back Jeremy Reaves was named as a First-Team All-Pro on special teams.

Reaves, 26, is a fifth-year pro who hadn’t made the 53-man roster out of training camp in any season before this year. However, his talents were recognized by Ron Rivera and the coaching staff during training camp as he made the final team and balled out as one of the top special teams players in the league.

Reaves was also named to the NFC Pro Bowl team and a Players’ Selection First-Team All-Pro.

JAN 9 WASHINGTON SIGNS FUTURES The Washington Commanders announced that they’ve signed nine players to futures contracts on Monday for the 2023 season. The list:

CB Troy Apke
DE William Bradley-King
WR Alex Erickson
CB DaMarcus Fields
QB Jake Fromm
G Nolan Laufenberg
WR Kyric McGowan
T Aaron Monteiro
G Keaton Sutherland

Fromm, 24, was a fifth-round pick by the Bills out of Georgia in 2020. Buffalo waived him coming out of the preseason and in 2021, he got on the field with the Giants. He’s spent time on the Commanders practice squad since then.

JAN 7 SCHERFF, JAGS MAKE PLAYOFFS The Washington Commanders may not be in the playoffs this year, but a familiar face will be.

After the Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Tennessee Titans Saturday night, offensive lineman Brandon Scherff punched his ticket to the playoffs. He started every game for the Jaguars this season.

Scherff played for Washington from 2015-21, and now makes his third playoff appearance.

JAN 5 HAMLIN AWAKE Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin is no longer in a coma, awake and showing more signs of improvement, according to teammate Kaiir Elam.

Hamlin has been in the hospital since Monday night after suffering cardiac arrest in the MNF game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

JAN 4 SAM HOWELL STARTS Despite earlier reports Washington would start Taylor Heinicke at quarterback in Sunday’s season finale, it was rookie Sam Howell seen taking first reps when practice began on Wednesday.

Furthermore, when the passers and receiver broke away to throw routes, Howell was throwing to starters like Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel, and Jahan Dotson.

Ron Rivera confirmed in his press conference that Howell would start the Week 18 finale against the Dallas Cowboys.

JAN 4 WASHINGTON COMMANDERS GOING BACK TO HEINICKE One week after quarterback Carson Wentz replaced Taylor Heinicke as the team’s starter, it’s being reported Washington is reversing course.

While Heinicke is expected to be the starter, the same report says rookie Sam Howell will also get playing time, making his NFL debut in the final week of the regular season.

As of now, the team has yet to confirm.

All of this would suggest that

Carson Wentz is getting benched (again) … even as coach Ron Rivera is saying he has “no regrets” about the fateful decision to start Wentz in last week’s playoff-hopes-killing loss to the Browns.

The 7-8-1 Commanders are probably wise to begin the experiment with the rookie Howell, as there is little else to be accomplished here against 12-4 Dallas, which is playoff-bound and still trying to win the NFC East.

JAN 3 NFL HAS NO ANSWER FOR BILLS-BENGALS RESUMPTION The NFL released a statement Tuesday afternoon in regards to the continuation of the Buffalo Bills vs. Cincinnati Bengals game.

All Week 18 games will currently be played as scheduled.

JAN 2 MNF SUSPENDED AFTER SCARY FALL The Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals are currently suspending play after one of the scariest moments in NFL history.

Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field with 5:58 left in the first quarter.

There is no timetable for when the game will return to action.

JAN 2 COMMANDERS PLAY COWBOYS LATE The Washington Commanders will play the Dallas Cowboys at 4:25 p.m. EST on Sunday, the NFL announced today.

The NFC East games are the only games not on the west coast slated for the later time slot.

Sunday Night Football will be between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on NBC.

JAN 1 COMMANDERS ELIMINATED The day started with the Washington Commanders controlling their own playoff destiny, but it ended in the worst outcome possible.

By virtue of the wins from the Detroit Lions, Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers, the Commanders are eliminated from the playoffs.

At 7-8-1, the Commanders hold the 10th seed in the NFC with no chance of getting in the top 7.

JAN 1 WENTZ WOBBLY Carson Wentz is the “new” Commanders starter today … and it isn’t working.

He has opened 2 of 6 for 13 yards with two interceptions in a little more than a quarter.

That’s right. At home against the Browns, Wentz has … two completions. And two interceptions.

And some in the audience at FedEx are already chanting for a change to Taylor Heinicke.

DEC 31 CURL DOUBTFUL; APKE, PATTERSON ELEVATED VS. BROWNS The Washington Commanders are elevating running back Jaret Patterson and cornerback Troy Apke from the practice squad.

The moves come after Antonio Gibson was ruled out and Kam Curl’s status was switched to doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Browns.

The Commanders host the Browns at 1 p.m. Sunday at FedEx Field.

DEC 30 CHARLES LENO NAMED NFLPA COMMUNITY MVP Washington Commanders offensive tackle Charles Leno Jr. is the Week 17 NFLPA Community MVP.

He pledged more than $90,000 in donations, gifts and experiences through his foundation’s work during the “25 Days of Leno Claus” initiative.

Leno has also been named the Commanders’ nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award, where the winner will be revealed at the NFL Honors in February.

DEC 28 CARSON WENTZ STARTING FOR COMMANDERS Washington coach Ron Rivera said on Tuesday he needed to speak with his team before making a final decision on his starting quarterback moving forward.

With reports coming out Wednesday morning, it appears he has done so and has made the decision to move back to quarterback Carson Wentz as the team’s starter.

The Commanders host the Cleveland Browns this weekend, with a playoff-clinching scenario in play.

DEC 26 JOSH NORMAN WORKS OUT FOR PANTHERS The Carolina Panthers are bringing in cornerback Josh Norman for a workout.

Norman, 35, played four seasons with Washington from 2016-19, but his first NFL home was in Carolina.

Norman made the 2015 Pro Bowl in his final season with the Panthers, where the team went all the way to Super Bowl 50 before losing to the Denver Broncos.

If signed, Norman would replace budding star Jaycee Horn, who broke his wrist Saturday against the Detroit Lions.

DEC 24 HEINICKE BENCHED FOR WENTZ The Washington Commanders are changing quarterbacks.

After two consecutive turnovers in the fourth quarter and a 16-point deficit, the Commanders are inserting Carson Wentz into the game for Heinicke.

Heinicke’s day ends with 13 completions on 18 attempts for 166 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

DEC 21 COMMANDERS SENDING 4 TO PRO BOWL The Washington Commanders will be well-represented at this year’s Pro Bowl Games.

Wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who surpassed 1000 yards for the season on Sunday against the New York Giants, was the lone offensive starter.

On defense, defensive tackle Jonathan Allen made it for the second straight year.

The Commanders will also be represented by punter Tress Way and special teams ace Jeremy Reaves.

Daron Payne and Montez Sweat have been named as alternates.

DEC 18 CHASE YOUNG OUT VS. GIANTS The team, media, and the fans have all been wondering when defensive end Chase Young might make his debut.

Young hasn’t stepped on the playing field once as a member of the Commanders’ defense.

Yet that unit has been the bright spot on a team with their playoff destiny in hand.

Hopes of getting No. 99 on the field this weekend against the New York Giants have all but evaporated according to reports on Sunday morning, however.

Now, everyone will turn towards Washington’s road contest against the San Francisco 49ers to see if maybe that’s when Chase gets on the field for the first time in over a year.

DEC 17 COMMANDERS MAKE 2 MOVES AHEAD OF GIANTS GAME The Washington Commanders are activating offensive lineman Wes Martin and clearing defensive lineman Efe Obada ahead of their Sunday Night Football contest against the New York Giants.

Obada was questionable with a finger injury, but he’ll suit up against the Giants. Martin has not made an appearance for the Commanders since Week 4.

DEC 12 CARSON WENTZ BACK The Washington Commanders are activating Carson Wentz from injured reserve today.

Wentz last played in Week 6 against the Chicago Bears where he broke his thumb and required surgery. In a corresponding move, the team placed offensive lineman Tyler Larsen on injured reserve.

DEC 8 WR ODELL BECKHAM JR. DOESN’T GET DALLAS DEAL DONE It’s been reported the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants were two of the front-runners to gain the services of free-agent receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

After leaving his visit with Dallas without a contract offer, however, it appears if he does return to the NFC East it’ll have to be with New York who the Washington Commanders face next weekend.

Even if Beckham signed with the Giants, it would be unreasonable to expect he’d be ready to play next Sunday night.

Reportedly, the reason no offer was made is out of concerns he may not be available at all in 2022. Making it less likely Washington will see it’s old divisional foe, this season.

DEC 6 LENO NAME WPMOY NOMINEE All 32 teams named one player to be nominated for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award. This season, that honor for Washington belongs to offensive tackle Charles Leno Jr.

Leno, 31, signed a three-year, $37.5 million contract this offseason.

DEC 5 KNEE CAP – OUCH Washington starting center Tyler Larsen exited the 20-20 tie with the Giants with a leg injury and was carted off the field. … and now there is a report about the severity of the injury, The Athletic saying that Larsen sustained a dislocated kneecap and that “this could be a season-ending injury for the second consecutive year” for Larsen, who endured an Achilles injury last season.

DEC 5 WASHINGTON COMMANDERS LOSE LINEBACKER It was reported and confirmed on Monday that team captain Cole Holcomb had foot surgery and will miss the remainder of the NFL season following.

DEC 4 NO CHASE YOUNG FOR WEEK 13 AT NEW YORK GIANTS The Washington Commanders will reportedly wait until after the bye week when the team hosts the Giants for Week 15 to bring back defensive end Chase Young (knee).

DEC 1 JOEY SLYE NAMED ST PLAYER OF THE MONTH Washington Commanders kicker Joey Slye is taking home some hardware.

Slye made all 13 of his field goal attempts during the month of November, where the Commanders went 3-1. In Week 10 against the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles, Slye made four field goals and two extra points in the upset win.

The fact that this game carried as much import as it did says a lot about how far the Seattle Seahawks have come in such a short time. It also served as a litmus test, as the San Francisco 49ers came to town engorged on the blood of their last six foes. It wasn’t that long ago that this was the best rivalry in the NFL and with the Seahawks rising and the 49ers near the top of the heap, we may be headed back that way. But right now, in this moment, there is a clear difference in talent, execution, and experience between these two teams, and that disparity was on display for the entire country tonight.

—

The Seahawks started the game with the ball and immediately picked up a first down when Geno Smith followed up a six-yard Ken Walker III run with a five-yard completion to Tyler Lockett. It was a nice lil pop to keep a frenzied crowd titillated but the drive would stall after that. Damien Lewis got beat on a screen pass to Walker III for a loss of three and Smith threw consecutive incompletions, leading to a Michael Dickson punt that pinned the Niners at their own 10.

As the 49ers prepared for their first possession, Seattle’s much-maligned defense took the field having forced the fewest three-and-outs in the NFL. San Francisco’s offense, for their part, had committed the fewest, but the Seahawks immediately forced San Francisco off the field anyway. Cody Barton strung a Christian McCaffrey run out on first down, Jordyn Brooks snuffed a short completion to George Kittle, and Ryan Neal wrapped up McCaffrey short of the sticks to end the drive. Exactly what we needed to see and, more importantly, what that defense needed to feel.

From then on, however, the 49ers defense did what they’ve been doing all season, and it led to a quick three and out highlighted by a Talanoa Hufanga sack that knocked the ball from Smith’s hands. The Niners offense would be getting a lot more run if it wasn’t for the unmatched prowess of their defense, and they showed exactly what makes them so dangerous on their next drive. With their monstrous offensive line creating holes, McCaffrey used his shiftiness and explosion to exploit the gaps for big gains. And when he wasn’t rookie Brock Purdy calmly distributed the ball all over the field.

The steady march culminated in a beautiful play design that was executed flawlessly by Brock Purdy. On it, Purdy faked one swing pass, then turned and pantomimed another before pivoting back to the middle of the field to find a slanting Kittle wide open. Kittle caught the pass and weaved his way through the last two defenders and into the endzone to make it 7-0.

The Seahawks offense continued their struggle, going three-and-out on their next two drives, leaving them with just 11 total yards on their first 11 plays. Fortunately, the defense did their part, taking advantage of 49ers penalties to stop two promising drives themselves and the punt-fest continued.

Smith got rolling on the next possession, finding DK Metcalf on consecutive throws for consecutive first downs. And when it looked like the momentum would stop faced with 3rd & 13 a couple snaps later, Geno kept it pushin’. As he dropped back to pass, Smith found no one open and leaked out to the right. As he approached the line of scrimmage, he pump-faked to freeze the isolated defender then gained the edge for a 15-yard scramble. A Walker III run and an out route to Noah Fant gained another first down before the drive finally sputtered out at the 20. Jason Myers trotted out and banged home a 38-yard field goal to close the gap at 7-3 and the game suddenly felt different.

The 49ers got another first down on their next possession before Purdy finally made his first mistake. Standing in a clean pocket, Purdy tossed one over the middle— right to Quandre Diggs. The ball hit Diggs in the chest but he couldn’t clasp it and it fell incomplete. It happened on third down so the Niners had to punt anyway but the drop cost Seattle at least 40 yards of field position with less than two minutes to go in the half and made scoring a whole lot tougher.

Still, it was a big stop for a struggling defense and the good vibes continued when Smith found Lockett and Marquis Goodwin on consecutive plays for a first down. Feeling the flow, the Seahawks stayed no huddle and Travis Homer took it up the middle for five more. Smith went back to Homer with a little arrow route on the next snap, but Dre Greenlaw absolutely leveled him with a huge hit and the ball sprung free. Charvarious Ward scooped it up and returned it all the way down to Seattle’s 7. Two McCaffrey plunges later, the 49ers were knocking an extra point through the uprights to make it 14-3, where it would stay until halftime.

The 49ers opened the third quarter with a big kick return and stepped on Seattle’s throat on their next play from scrimmage. Purdy dropped back as Kittle exploded out of his stance, and then just… didn’t get covered by anybody. Purdy hit him with ease for a huge gain and Kittle summarily dismissed Diggs and Barton inside the 10 for the long score. 21-3, and what felt like a close game less than two minutes of clock time ago was suddenly on the brink of a blowout.

The Seahawks’ once burning fire had been reduced to embers and those were nearly stamped out completely when Geno underthrew Lockett a couple snaps later. The pass was undercut by Deommodore Lenoir, who returned it for a touchdown that was waived off by an admittedly bullshit roughing call against Nick Bosa. Granted a break, Smith was able to hit Metcalf three times on the drive, as the Seahawks inched it close enough for Myers to hammer a 51-yarder through the uprights. 21-6.

After that it was a whole bunch of not scoring, with nary a real chance at it, until the Niners missed a short field goal with five minutes left in the game. It didn’t seem like much at the time but it kept the Seahawks within two scores. Through 55 minutes, Seattle had managed just two field goals but they weren’t ready to give up the ghost on the division just yet. Smith and Co took the field and got to work.

Geno found Metcalf for nine and after Walker III picked up the first down, hit Will Dissly for 13. Two plays later, Smith slung it out to Walker III in the right flat and the rookie smoked the lone defender’s pursuit angle to the sideline and turned upfield for 33. Despite the urgency of the situation, Smith remained calm and followed that big completion up with a seam pass to Noah Fant for a 10-yard touchdown that brought Seattle within eight at 21-13 with three and a half minutes left.

One more stop, and the Seahawks would get the ball back with an improbable shot at tying the game. That stop never came, however, as McCaffrey picked up one first down and Purdy scrambled for another, barely sliding past the first down marker and costing Seattle their final timeout on the ensuing unsuccessful challenge. From there, Seattle’s best case scenario was to force one last stop and get the ball back with about 30 seconds left. Instead, Jordan Mason burst through a well-blocked hole on the left side and juked Ryan Neal in the open field, streaking all the way down to the 2 before Mike Jackson knocked him out of bounds. Still, that run served as the finisher, and Purdy kneeled out the clock from there.

—

SMOKE RINGS

~Games like this— scratch that— defenses like this make it tough to judge a quarterback. Geno Smith was under siege all night, with San Francisco’s monstrous front seven making it difficult to get through his reads and eliminating any of the boot-action / moving-pocket schemes Seattle likes to employ. And on the back end, the Niners secondary stuck to Seattle’s receivers like flypaper, providing exactly zero margin for error. They’ve been annihilating the stat lines of opposing quarterbacks all season long and today was no different, as they reduced Geno’s remarkable season-long efficiency to rubble until the final drive.

When the dust settled, Smith’s numbers were decent considering the circumstances. He dropped back to pass a career-high 47 times, completing 31 of 44 throws for 238 yards, a touchdown, and no picks while taking 3 sacks in the process. All told Seattle finished with just 207 net yards passing, or 4.5 yards per play. Sheesh.

Geno has narrowly avoided a lot of interceptions recently and that continued again today. An endzone shot in the first half went through Tanaloa Mufanga’s hands and the call that erased the pick-six was honestly brutal. His final numbers were fine, and he stayed true to his process until the bitter end, but this was not a great performance. No one’s is against these guys, though, and the 10 second half points Seattle scored was the most anyone has in seven games.

~Yards were just so difficult to come by today and that’s reflected in Ken Walker III’s final line. For the fourth time in five games, Seattle found themselves down early and never got their run game into any kind of rhythm. Walker III finished with an underwhelming 47 yards on 12 carries but chipped in 32 more on four receptions. 77 total yards is just fine considering the circumstances.

I love Travis Homer and my confidence doesn’t waver one iota when he’s on the field. His fumble really hurt Seattle’s chances today, and you could see how bad he felt after, but I’m not sure there’s anybody who holds onto the ball the way Dre Greenlaw hit him.

~DK Metcalf is the coolest for so many reasons but my favorite is the deep personal offense he takes at the gall of any cornerback daring to line up against him. It’s even better when that cornerback is someone like Charvarius Ward, who is just as fearless. These two tussled all game long, locking facemasks on every run play and battling for each pass like flags don’t exist. Just awesome to watch.

As far as his total output went, he was productive on a night when few others were. He caught seven passes for 55 yards on nine targets against phenomenal coverage and never backed down in the face of the best defense in the league.

Tyler Lockett also caught seven of nine targets, turning them into 68 yards and a bunch of first downs. He is the finesse to Metcalf’s power and he was out there wiggling his way into soft spots in the defense all night. He’s on his way to another remarkable season and remains the most consistent playmaker in the offense.

~Believe it or not, I think the offensive line did alright. I know I’m beating the hell out of this drum but it’s impossible to talk about any aspect of the offense without acknowledging just how good their defensive counterparts were in this one. Charles Cross and Abe Lucas were admirable against Nick Bosa and Samson Ebukam and three sacks is actually pretty good when you consider that they called 47 pass plays. The interior line held their own on most of the pass plays but were unable to create any holes big enough for Walker III to convert into long runs. That part of their game has really stalled out over the last five weeks.

~In the same way the 49ers defense creates constant tension for opposing offenses, their offense does the same. And that makes it tough on a team like Seattle, who still seems hesitant at the point of attack. Overall, I thought the defense played pretty well— certainly as well as any team has against the Niners lately— but the relentless pressure eventually creates, and then exploits, cracks in their opponents’ plumbing. And when those cracks give way, the 49ers explode. That’s what they did today, as Seattle kept them bottled up on the vast majority of their plays but when the opportunities were there, San Francisco maximized ‘em. The story of this game was the disparity in explosive plays.

Holding this offense to 21 points is really good but they allowed the Niners to wring out the clock with 170 yards rushing, pushing Seattle’s total over 1,000 yards allowed on the ground in the last five games. They gave up two long touchdowns to Kittle through the air but were actually excellent aside from those. Even with those two huge plays, they held the 49ers to 211 yards passing on 27 dropbacks and looked good in coverage aside from a couple blown assignments.

~Michael Dickson and Jason Myers might be the best players on this team right now. Dickson was sensational, punting 7 times at 50 yards per, pinning 3 of them inside the 10 including killing one inside the 1. Myers nailed both his kicks as he continues to be the most accurate kicker in the NFL this season, converting 96% of his field goals and 97% of his extra points. The crazy thing about it is almost every attempt he’s had this season has cleared the crossbar in the middle third. He’s not even making us sweat.

—

We lost a very close friend a couple days ago. Someone who fought so hard for the people in her life— who’s unrelenting optimism turned each occasion into a great time, and who went out of her way to help at every opportunity. Most importantly, she made everyone feel good about themselves whenever they were around her. There is a huge hole in my heart today, and in the hearts of hundreds of others. The world dimmed a little when she left us, but it’s much brighter than it was before she arrived.

Tonight’s outcome sucks, and it’s hard to watch the Seahawks stumble towards the finish line after such a promising start to the season. We care a lot about this team, this game, and it hurts to watch the 49ers clinch the division on the Seahawks’ field. But I’m reminded that this is just a game, and that I am so fortunate to be healthy, happy, and able to watch it with people I love.

Seattle’s arrow is still pointed up— maybe not as steeply as it was a month ago— but the team is young, fun, hungry, and brimming with potential. The postseason got a little further away today, but it’s very much still in play and the outlook for the ‘Hawks for the next few years is so much rosier than I would’ve imagined as recently as September.

I feel incredibly lucky to watch these guys play, and to have the opportunity to write about it for such a remarkable fanbase. I appreciate you guys so much and the fact that anyone reads this each week still blows me away. I’m grateful for y’all and I can’t wait to watch this team rise with you. Onward and upward. We love you Carmen.

***As most of you know, Cigar Thoughts is now a podcast. One of the perks of the pod is getting these articles in audio form, in addition to our sit-downs with our amazing guests. You can listen to all the shows, including this article, right here:

—

DirecTV Stream isn’t cheap, but it offers all the networks you’ll need for the 2022 NFL season, including ESPN, ABC and ESPN Deportes. Subscribers to the DirecTV “Choice” tier and above get access to CBS, NBC, Fox and ESPN, plus regional sports networks and no-extra-cost access to 2022 NFL Sunday Ticket Max, a plan that streams every live out-of-market Sunday game (and usually runs $395).

Right now, DirectTV Stream is offering $10 off your first five months, meaning you’ll only have to pay $80 for the “Choice” tier with 2022 NFL Sunday Ticket Max for the duration of the NFL season.

Sling TV is a live-TV streamer. For the NFL season, Sling’s “Orange & Blue” tier will get you almost all of the networks you need to watch every game — including ABC and ESPN — and at a relative bargain of $50 a month. Note: The “Orange & Blue” tier will not get you CBS games, or Amazon Prime Video’s “Thursday Night Football.”

ESPN+ will simulcast some of ESPN’s “MNF” games, but it includes access to very few live NFL games. During the 2022 NFL season, ESPN+ will exclusively broadcast one single game: Denver Broncos vs. Jacksonville Jaguars on October 30. (The game will take place at Wembley Stadium in London at 9:30 a.m. ET.)

This means, if you truly want to the ability to stream every single game of the season, you’ll need access to ESPN+ — at least for the month of October. The $7 per month streaming service does not currently offer a free trial.

ESPN+, $7 monthly

Another way you can gain access to ESPN+ is through the Disney+ bundle, which includes Disney+, Hulu’s most basic ad-supported plan and ESPN+ for $14 a month.
            iRobot via Walmart

This smart robot vacuum uses floor-tracking sensors to clean in neat rows. The home gadget’s multi-surface rubber brushes auto-adjust to different floor types and avoid getting tangled with pet hair. This robot vac also empties on its own. The iRobot Roomba i1+ comes with an iRobot Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal that allows the i1+ to empty itself for up to 60 days.

Connect your iRobot Roomba to Wi-Fi to control it remotely via the iRobot app.

“I absolutely love my iRobot,” wrote a Walmart customer who purchased the device. “This is literally life changing. I have a dog that sheds A LOT. I used to have to vacuum everyday to keep up with all my dogs hair on the floor. Now I just run my iRobot everyday and it saves me so much time and energy. This vacuum is so easy to use. You literally press one button on the machine to turn it on or you can use the app on your phone. It navigates around your house on its own and maps your floors so that it remembers where to clean the next time. The vacuum goes to the tower and empties itself when it’s full and it also charges on its own at the base.”

The robot vac is $242 off during Walmart’s Black Friday sale, Deals for Days.

The 65-inch LG OLED TV from the C1 series is discounted a whopping $650 during Walmart’s Black Friday sale.

Unlike LED and QLED TVs, OLED TVs don’t have a backlight layer. Instead, each pixel is its own teeny-tiny LED light that can independently adjust luminosity and even turn off completely. Because each pixel functions independently, the TV offers elite image quality — and the darkest shadows. OLED televisions also tend to be ultra thin. This particular LG set measures just 1.8 inches thick. It features 4K upscaling, plus built-in Google Assistant and Alexa.

Justin Herbert’s Los Angeles Chargers (5-3) have the better record, but it’s Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers (4-4) who are favored at home by a touchdown in this Week 10 matchup.

The 49ers have been rolling on offense since adding Christian McCaffrey to an already talented unit featuring Deebo Samuel and George Kittle. Meanwhile, the Chargers are banged up on both sides of the field and have been scrapping to get wins. Which team comes out on top? The game is set to kick off Sunday at 8:20 pm ET from Levi’s Stadium.

Here’s a look at the betting details and USA TODAY’s NFL staff picks for the Chargers vs. 49ers Week 10 game:

Chargers at 49ers odds, moneyline and over/under

Follow every game: Live NFL Scores

NFL BOLD PREDICTIONS:NFL bold predictions for the second half: When will Eagles lose? Bears… in the playoffs?

WEEK 9 NFL COACHING GRADE:Bengals, Jets score high marks after big wins; Colts, Raiders fail

NFL WEEK 9 WINNERS AND LOSERS:Tom Brady saves Buccaneers’ season, Packers hit rock bottom

Lorenzo Reyes: 49ers 30, Chargers 20

The Chargers escaped Sunday in a game they should’ve lost. Their offense is frustratingly inefficient at times, and coordinator Joe Lombardi’s job is in peril. San Francisco is at home and off the bye.

Safid Deen: 49ers 27, Chargers 20

The injured Chargers are finding a way to stay alive this season, but it won’t find success against a revamped 49ers team pushing toward the Super Bowl this season. It’ll be fought hard, but San Francisco wins.

Lance Pugmire: 49ers 30, Chargers 17

Plagued by injuries and dubious coaching, Los Angeles falls prey to the sudden NFC power on Sunday night. At least the Chargers don’t have to feel the sting of playing a road game at home given what the 49ers’ throng annually do to the Rams.

32 THINGS WE LEARNED:Bills may regret last week; Packers, Rams done?

After getting throttled at home by the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7, Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers (3-4) find themselves in desperate need of a win on the road against Matthew Stafford’s Los Angeles Rams (3-3) in a game with huge NFC West ramifications.

The Rams have had their fair share of struggles during the 2022 season, but will Stafford, Cooper Kupp and Co. find some rhythm coming out of the bye in a wide-open division? Or can Garoppolo, Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel pull off a tough win on the road? The game kicks off Sunday at 4:25 pm ET from SoFi Stadium.

Here’s a look at the betting details and USA TODAY’s NFL staff picks for the 49ers vs. Rams Week 8 game:

49ers at Rams odds, moneyline and over/under

Follow every game: Live NFL Scores

OBSCURITY:Brock Purdy, ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ of 2022 NFL draft, makes history in San Francisco 49ers debut

DEADLINE NEARING:One player from each team who could be moved before 2022 NFL trade deadline

NEW LIDS:The NFL has returned alternate helmets in 2022: Ranking all 13 from best to worst

NFL Week 8 odds, predictions and picks

Ravens vs Buccaneers | Broncos vs Jaguars | Dolphins vs Lions | Panthers vs Falcons | Steelers vs Eagles | Raiders vs Saints | Bears vs. Cowboys | Patriots vs Jets | Cardinals vs Vikings | Titans vs Texans | Commanders vs Colts | Giants vs Seahawks | 49ers vs Rams | Packers vs Bills | Bengals vs Browns

Lorenzo Reyes: 49ers 28, Rams 20

This is an interesting matchup as both coaches know each other extremely well. But both teams have been so hot and cold this season, that I’m going to back the team that has the better defense — even though the Chiefs’ buzzsaw ran through them last week. And with a full week to incorporate Christian McCaffrey, I think the Niners cover as road favorites.

Safid Deen: 49ers 24, Rams 17

The 49ers got a rude awakening against the Chiefs last week in Christian McCaffrey’s debut, but their defense loves going up against Matt Stafford, Cooper Kupp and the Rams’ offense, which has yet to find its footing this season. I’ll take San Francisco on the road in this one.

Lance Pugmire: Rams 24, 49ers 21

Refreshed from a bye, Sean McVay finally beats Kyle Shanahan in a regular-season meeting as LA’s defense stifles Christian McCaffrey at home and Cooper Kupp catches three touchdowns.

NFL WEEK 7 WINNERS AND LOSERS:Bengal’s offense returns to form; Packers more than receiver away

32 THINGS WE LEARNED:Observations from Week 7 of 2022 NFL season: What’s wrong with Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and NFC?

IN DEPTH:The NFL coaches project

NFL salaries: These are the highest-paid NFL players
