On October 10, 21-year-old Zachary Kennedy was seen by several witnesses on the bridge in California.

His body was later recovered from the water by the US Coast Guard, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Monday at Chelmsford Coroner's Court, coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray recorded a verdict of suicide, saying Mr Kennedy had deliberately taken his own life.

Mr. Kennedy's body was found in the waters of the bay at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge, the iconic structure that connects San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

At Monday's hearing, coroner Andre Kimche said: “At the time of his death Mr Kennedy was still living in Maldon.”

“On October 10, he was seen jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

“He was recovered from the water by the Coast Guard and brought to shore.

“American authorities did not take toxicology samples and U.S. medical examiners listed the cause of death as blunt impact injuries.”

Ms Beasley-Murray said: “Given all the evidence presented to this court, I have concluded that this man intended to take his own life.”

“He had the intention and acted consciously, knowing full well that it would cost his life.

“I will conclude that he killed himself.

“Please express my condolences to Mr. Kennedy’s family.”

Great increases are days away from taking effect on seven bridges in the San Francisco area. What ultimately happens with the money is not yet certain.

The second of three scheduled toll increases approved by voters three years ago is set to take effect the first of the year.

A lawsuit awaiting review in the California Supreme Court will determine whether the voter-approved initiative to raise bridge tolls will be upheld.

Regional measure 3

In June 2018, voters in the San Francisco area approved Regional Measure 3 to pay more to cross bridges to secure more money for transportation work throughout the region.

By a 55% to 45% margin, voters in the city and county of San Francisco and the other eight Bay Area counties approved a question to double bridge tolls. The additional revenue is touted to help get $4.45 billion in transportation work done over the next 25 years, including a project to reduce truck traffic.

Approval of Measure 3 required a simple majority of votes cast in all nine counties.

A majority of voters in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma counties agreed to increase toll rates by $3 over six years on the seven state-operated bridges in the area.

The Golden Gate Bridge is exempt. The bridge is run independently of the state.

The first $1 increase took effect on Jan 1, 2019. Another increase is slated to take effect on Jan 1, 2022. The third of three increases is set for Jan 1, 2025.

After 2025, tolls could be increased for inflation.

Additional great revenue collected since the first increase has topped $300 million. The revenue is being held in escrow awaiting the outcome of legal challenges. Revenue resulting from the upcoming toll increase also will be put into escrow.

California Supreme Court to settle issue

The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association challenged the measure’s outcome. The group argues that tolls are a tax.

California law requires two-thirds of voters to approve a change in tax collection.

In 2020, the First District Court of Appeals sided with the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and the Bay Area Toll Authority that the tolls are not taxes. Instead, the court agreed the higher tolls are a fee increase.

A San Francisco superior court had the same interpretation.

The issue has since been sent to the California Supreme Court. If the court rules in favor of challengers, funds collected since 2019 will be returned to bridge users.

Truck projects included

Approval of Measure 3 is touted to benefit 35 projects intended to take vehicles off the road and eliminate bottlenecks on the Bay Area’s most heavily traveled routes.

An estimated $160 million will be designated for projects to reduce truck traffic congestion and mitigate environmental effects.

Eligible projects include improvements in Alameda County to enable more goods to be shipped by rail, and access improvements to Interstates 580, 80 and 880, and to the Port of Oakland.

A separate project covers I-80 westbound truck scales. Specifically, $105 million is set to be allocated to “improve freight mobility, reliability, and safety” on the I-80 corridor by funding improvements to the westbound truck scales in Solano County.

Jan 1 increase

Tolls will rise by $1 on Jan. 1: to $7 for two-axle vehicles, $17 for axles, $22 for four axles, $27 for five axles, $32 for six axles, and $37 for combinations with seven or more axles.

Discounts are available for certain motorists. LL

Traffic on the Bay Bridge was brought to a halt Tuesday night after a rogue firework display, launched from the upper deck, lit up the sky.

California Highway Patrol said in a statement that 10 to 15 cars stopped in the westbound lane near Treasure Island at around 7:45 pm The drivers got out of their vehicles and lit the fireworks before moving on after a few minutes. Fireworks are illegal in San Francisco and Oakland. CHP reported that 911 calls flooded emergency dispatch operators during the stunt.

The elaborate display was caught and shared across social media by onlookers and drivers on the bridge caught in the brief gridlock.

Some users, and those stuck in traffic, voiced their surprise and frustration, while others celebrated the chaos. “No idea why there were fireworks from the bay bridge, just happy they happened,” Twitter user Ryan Gross wrote. “Life is so damn good, keep it coming!”

A bridge collapsed near the intersection of Braddock and Forbes in Pittsburgh on Friday morning, hours before President Biden was due to travel to that city to speak on American infrastructure.

In the summer of 2000 I graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Even then, as a New Yorker, I gave up my own car and got around by bike, bus and my feet. During my two years in Pittsburgh (“The Paris of Western Pennsylvania,” as I used to call it), I lived in Squirrel Hill.

I could easily walk to get groceries and coffee, and cycle to class. But when I finally finished school and packed my apartment to move to Los Angeles, I decided to rent a car for my last few days. So I had it for necessary errands and could drive myself – and my many suitcases – to the airport.

It was a beautiful, sunny afternoon and I decided to drive to a store in a mall a few miles away to get some packing supplies. Driving home with a big bag of peanuts in the trunk, excited about moving and looking forward to a new life in California, I turned off Braddock West onto Forbes and crossed the Fern Hollow Bridge.

I saw lightning out of the corner of my left eye and heard a loud bang. It was like a huge hand had slammed into the side of the car somewhere behind my left shoulder. My car turned around three times and was still moving across the bridge and into the oncoming lane. Eventually the rotation stopped, but I continued to move sideways. I looked to the right and there were two SUVs coming towards me.

I remember being unsure if they would be able to stop in time before realizing it didn’t matter: I walked off the end of the bridge into the forest and the ravine below. All that was left was to scream in terror.

And then the car came to a stop with an even stronger jolt than the original impact. Suddenly everything was quiet. The right front of my car had wrapped itself around a rusting steel utility pole, preventing me from driving into the canyon. Despite all the damage and warping of the rest of the car, my seat and side of the passenger compartment somehow remained untouched.

I forced my door open and stumbled out. I looked at the thirty-foot rusty pole that had stopped me. I looked behind me and saw a crumpled yellow Toyota stranded across the street. His driver drove over and apologized for hitting me. “My brakes were broken,” he said. Other drivers came to make sure we were okay and said the driver of the yellow Toyota was driving “like a bat out of hell”.

From what they described, he’d made his way through eastbound traffic on the Forbes straight. There is a sharp turn just before Forbes meets the eastbound bridge. As I looked at all the tire tracks and listened to the other drivers, I began to understand. The Toyota driver was going too fast to take that corner. He tried to brake, but physics took over. He lost control, crossed the bulkhead and hit the rear left wheel of my car, breaking the axle and throwing the rear of my car perpendicular to my direction of travel. At that point, my car might as well have been running on rubber skids; there was just no way to control it.

A few minutes later, an ambulance, a tow truck and the police showed up. I remember the tow truck driver, a burly guy in a short-sleeved blue uniform who looked like he could tow a car without the truck, kept staring at the remains of my car and shaking his head. “How do you breathe, let alone how you walk? You should go to the hospital,” he said. The paramedics asked if I was okay and if I wanted to go to the emergency room I said I felt fine. They took my pulse, looked into my eyes; did the usual checks. “You should go to the hospital, you could have internal damage,” the tow truck driver said. One of the paramedics turned to him and said, “You want to shut up?”

The policeman looked at all the tire tracks and listened to the testimonies. I remember the Toyota driver repeating, “My brakes locked up. You failed.” But the police officer shook his head and said, “You can’t drive the double yellow line in the state of Pennsylvania,” as he pulled out his citation book and began to write.

“But what about my brakes?”

I turned and barked at him, “The pavement is dry. Brakes don’t just lock up. You were to fast.”

I asked the paramedics if they thought I should go to the hospital. They just said they couldn’t find anything wrong. But I took the tow truck driver’s advice and drove anyway. Everything seemed so quiet in the back of the ambulance. I couldn’t believe what had happened; the one day in two years i rent a car and that! I thought about the bike lanes on Forbes. Just a painted stripe. If I had ridden a bike that afternoon, I would have been turned inside out.

A doctor examined me in the emergency room and couldn’t find anything. After about an hour of observation, they said I could go.

I left the hospital and suddenly remembered that I had no way home. I remembered that the packing material was still in the trunk of the wrecked car, which was now on its way to a junkyard. And the movers came the next day. I still had to pack. I had enough experience with Pittsburgh’s bus system to know that walking would probably get me home quicker.

So I started running. It takes an hour. It wasn’t that far, but Pittsburgh is as hilly as San Francisco. As the name suggests, Squirrel Hill is high up.

As I climbed the tree-lined streets of Pittsburgh, I noticed many of these old rusty poles, like the ones that had prevented me from going down the canyon. Pittsburgh used to have an amazing surface rail system that is perhaps only surpassed by Los Angeles’ Red Cars. But like so many cities in North America, it was all but destroyed in a colossal act of civic vandalism. The large steel rods holding the wires were all that survived. I thought of walking through “streetcar suburbs” once served by the great Pittsburgh Railways. There used to be almost 100 tram lines, but only one remained, and it didn’t go anywhere near where I lived.

How ridiculous was it that getting packing supplies without a car was so difficult in a city once riddled with such a massive transportation system? How absurd is it that a bridge in Pittsburgh that once carried streetcars now carried four lanes for car traffic, with nothing for bikes but a small strip in the gutter?

As I ran through the hills of Pittsburgh trying to stop shaking, little did I know that a few months later I would be collecting signatures on the Santa Monica Promenade to build the Expo Light Rail line on an abandoned streetcar line in Los Angeles . This crash would continue to haunt me. For years I woke up screaming from nightmares. The horrors of road violence do not only affect people who are physically injured. The tow truck driver was right: I wasn’t feeling well. But it also shocked me to realize how absurd our cities are, where once-great transportation systems have been replaced by land use and monomorphic, auto-over-everything policies that leave people little choice about how to get around.

I finally got back to my apartment. My landlord was sitting on the stairs. She said a nice tow truck driver stopped by to drop off some peanuts and they waited at my apartment.

It is amazing that no one was killed when the same bridge collapsed on Friday morning. The President visited the site and spoke of America’s rusty bridges. “They’ll fix them all,” he said. Certainly the collapse underscores that need. But what a tragedy it will be when the country rebuilds just a few car lanes and misses an opportunity to build protected bike lanes and restore the rail systems that once supported these bridges, taking people safely and eco-friendly everywhere they needed to go .

Emeryville’s month-long streak with no significant store closure ended last week with the abrupt shutdown of the East Bay Bridge Taco Bell (near Home Depot).

Other news in this report include the possible end of a restaurant establishment in Emeryville and the start of the upcoming renovation of the Bay Bridge Center.

East Bay Bridge Taco Bell closes

The Taco Bell at the East Bay Bridge Shopping Center near Home Depot is closed. They closed abruptly on December 27, according to a source, saying they would “open again in 30 minutes.” They never reopen and the signage has since been removed.

Other sources have indicated that neighboring Starbucks has temporarily closed due to “staffing shortages” amid the ongoing Omikron surge.

The closest available Taco Bell is located at 2255 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland.

Trader Vic looking for an apartment on site?

Trader Vic’s has started exploring buildings on the grounds of their fabled restaurant City of Emeryville November Progress Report. City planners met with the owners of Trader Vic on the property in November to discuss a potential housing project. Your design team has now also met online to discuss various development options.

The plans are preliminary and no documents have been officially submitted, but initial indications suggest that the restaurant area would not be maintained in its current form. “As far as I understand, the restaurant building would not be preserved,” noted a city contact. Compound Gallery “Expanding” to Emeryville

North Oakland’s Compound Gallery has found a new home for their gallery space just across the border in Emeryville. The building at 1339 61st Street has lived many lives lately as an enterprise software company called relola.

They announced the move to a December 6th Instagram post after completing their tenancy. “It was a really crazy time for us and we struggled to find a way to keep the gallery alive and thriving in the future. First two years of global pandemic, then landlords fighting. “

They then explained the various challenges they faced, including resignation and legal threats. “After a crazy search, we were able to find a building that we’ve had our eyes on for a while.”

Bay Bridge Center officially closed

All stores in the Bay Bridge Shopping Center on Christie Avenue have been officially vacated and the property has been fenced off. Wells Fargo, Allegro Ballroom, EmeryBay Cafe, and Copy Central have all either closed or moved. Denny’s and 76 gas stations will remain open and are currently not part of the redevelopment plans.

Oxford properties acquired the mall already in August with the intention of building a “mixed-use” project. Oxford has put forward a proposal that will be considered by the Planning Commission at a scheduled study meeting on January 27th.

Oakland Monster Pho parade

While the Emeryville location remains closed to customers, the Oakland Monster Pho location moves a few blocks closer to Emeryville on 40th Street off Broadway. You have been at the Broadway location since 2014.

The insane buzz of the safety slats on the pedestrian handrails of the Golden Gate Bridge is finally being silenced following a recent proposal from the Bridge District.

The fix – developed and tested by bridge engineers in consultation with aerodynamics and acoustics experts – provides for U-shaped clips with a thin rubber sleeve to be attached to all 12,000 vertical battens of the railing. – The San Francisco Chronicle

The haunted acoustic hum is the direct result of a $ 12 million wind retrofit project created by the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District. A few enterprising locals made the most of the deafening noise, although the majority of motorists in the Bay Area were vocal about it, which led to the change.

The newly approved upgrades will install a series of sound-absorbing rubber clips along the bridge’s pedestrian walkway, which the San Francisco Chronicle says can mitigate the impact of the larger wind safety louvers by up to 75%. The cost is approximately $ 450,000 and will be fully installed by the end of next year provided there are no major delays.

“When I heard that, I panicked,” she told us. She went to Garberville Hospital where she worked. “Cody hadn’t arrived when I got there,” she explained. The staff arranged a bed at the San Francisco General Trauma Hospital, Gamble explained. “Just as we were leaving, John came in with one of the girls who had been beaten up and dropped her off in the emergency room,” Gamble said. “She had a concussion.”
