Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s announcement that she will step away from Democratic leadership next Congress marked a transformational moment on Capitol Hill Thursday, with liberals and even some Republicans offering praise and kudos to the California congresswoman.

In a highly anticipated address from the House floor, Pelosi, who has led the Democratic caucus for 20 years, said she will continue serving her San Francisco district in the lower chamber but will pass the leadership torch to a “new generation” of Democrats, many of whom have been waiting in the wings for a shakeup among the caucus’s top brass.

The House chamber erupted in a standing ovation when Pelosi, dressed in a white suit, wrapped up her speech.

A swarm of Democrats lined up to hug the outgoing Speaker following her remarks. Some even recorded the moment on their cellphones from the floor. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) brought his young daughter to witness the occasion.

“She’s a historical figure. She’ll be one of the top people in American history,” said Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.), a close ally of Pelosi. “This is a tough, strong, smart, courageous woman that knows how to listen to everybody, make a decision, [and] implement.”

“She’s just such a venerated leader,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (DN.Y.) said. “It was so dignified, you know, the way that she carried and carries herself in such a dignified fashion. She went on her own terms, and I think there’s just nothing but respect there for her.”

Few Republicans ventured to the House floor to witness the speech from Pelosi, who has long been villainized in GOP messaging. House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) attended — and participated in the standing ovation after her speech.

But House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who this week was nominated by Republicans to replace Pelosi as Speaker next year when the party controls the House, did not attend and said shortly after that he did not watch her speech.

“I had meetings. But normally the others would do it during votes. I wish — she could have done that. I could have been there,” said McCarthy, who once joked that it would be hard to not hit Pelosi with the speaker’s gavel when he took it over.

The GOP leader and the Speaker have a hostile relationship, particularly during and since the Trump era. Pelosi called McCarthy a “moron” after he criticized the mask mandate she instituted on the house floor during the coronavirus pandemic.

“They’ve both [had] quite a career of how many decades they’ve been working here through,” McCarthy said of Pelosi and Hoyer on Thursday. “It’s a whole new generation for the Democrats.”

Pelosi’s historic reign in Democratic leadership began in 2002 when she assumed the role of House minority whip. She later served as chair of the House Democratic Caucus and minority leader, but will be most remembered for her ascension to the Speakership in 2007, when she became the first woman to secure the gavel.

Throughout her eight years as Speaker, Pelosi helped usher in a number of massive legislative accomplishments: she oversaw the passage of the Affordable Care Act, helped authorize trillions of dollars of emergency relief during the pandemic and pushed through this year’s multi-billion dollar tax and climate bill.

The California Democrat also twice kicked off impeachment proceedings against former President Trump during his White House tenure.

“I just admire her focus, her workmanship, her dedication and her able to get things done and work with folks,” Rep. Gregory Meeks (DN.Y.), chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, told reporters. “When I think of the accomplishments that we’ve made under her leadership, I’m glad that I had the opportunity to be here during those times.”

Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), a close Pelosi ally who was first to hug the speaker on the floor, called her California colleague “the most effective speaker in the history of the United States.”

The Democratic praise for Pelosi was bicameral. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (DN.Y.), who has served as Pelosi’s counterpart in the upper chamber for years, was present on the House floor during her remarks.

“I just left the floor of the house for one of the most emotional moments I’ve had in my career: the valedictory of Nancy Pelosi, one of the greatest legislators — and greatest people — I’ve ever met,” Schumer later said on the Senate floor.

“Few in American history have been as effective, as driven, as successful as Speaker Pelosi. She’s practically transformed every corner of American politics, and unquestionably made America a better, stronger nation,” he added.

But as Pelosi heads to the leadership exits, some Democrats are emphasizing that the California lawmaker will remain a consequential figure in the party — regardless of the title she holds.

“She’s not gonna leave Dem leadership, she’s still gonna be a leader in this caucus, you know, without all the nightmares of us … without the pains in the asses she had to deal with all the time,” Dingell said. “She’s got a great deal of influence, we all know how smart she is, she’s gonna be able to pull people together. She’s going to be a voice people are gonna listen to.”

“I think that her being still involved will be helpful and it’ll help us to get — get further faster,” Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) said.

Pelosi did get some praise from Republicans.

Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.), who said he often speaks to Pelosi on the house floor about her granddaughter and his daughter who share a name, gave her a hug after her speech.

“We don’t agree on a dadgum thing. And I prayed for her husband to get well. But I’m a Christian first, not a Republican,” Burchett said. “We still talk, and I think this country needs a little more than that.”

“We disagreed probably 99 percent of the time. But she’s been a very effective speaker for her own cause,” said Rep. Clay Higgins (R-La.) “She had a gracious presentation of well-prepared remarks. I think it was very appropriate.”

Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-Calif.) was also present for Pelosi’s speech and hugged her afterwards.

“Part of it was I was first up to present on legislation immediately after. But also, I believe it was a historic moment there, and I usually tend to sit in on those no matter who it is. And thirdly, it’s an Italian thing,” LaMalfa said.

Others, however, did not contain their glee at Pelosi leaving the Speakership.

“I’m thrilled,” said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.). “I think she’s been the most destructive speaker that we’ve had.”

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) chimed in with a tweet: “Good riddance!”

Advanced Comfort Specialists celebrated the opening of its new office in Cumru Township by raising $2,000 for K9 for Cameryn, a fundraiser sponsored by the Shillington Fire Department to raise money for the purchase of a service dog for Cameryn Huber.

Cameryn, a 7-year-old boy, has Autism, ADHD, DMDD, and other disabilities that make daily life and routines for him and his family challenging.

The heating, air conditioning and commercial refrigeration business also raised $560 for Olivet Boys & Girls Club, a youth advocacy organization serving more than 3,000 children and families in Reading and Berks County.

Advanced Comfort Specialists co-owners Chad Milligan and Paul Catanzaro attribute their business success, as well as the success of their fundraisers, to effectively establishing a family-like culture and environment between employees, customers, and management.

“Advanced Comfort Specialists has spent the last 17 years serving Berks County and beyond in any way necessary,” said Catanzaro, vice president, in a statement. “The motto, ‘We Can’t Sleep at Night Until You Can,’ truly encompasses our efforts in helping in any way possible.”

To raise money effectively for both initiatives, Advanced Comfort Specialists enlisted the help of its technicians, customers and local community members.

Milligan, ACS’ president, said, “The dedication and selflessness of our technicians, customers, and our community that led to raising $2,560 is incredibly inspiring for our team. It also serves as a reminder to all of us that we hold incredible power when we come together as a community.”

ACS’ newest office, which features 6,000 square feet of space, is located at 217 Montrose Blvd. Purchased in mid-May, the majority of the construction took place over five months. Featuring a fully-stocked warehouse, loading dock, and metal shop, the company says it will be able to operate in a more efficient, cost-effective manner.

US Rep. Jackie Speier and local political officials celebrated new safety and accessibility improvements to the Caltrain South San Francisco Station that will improve service for downtown.

“Once it is linked with electrified Caltrain [service]this station has all the hallmarks of a shot in the arm that South San Francisco deserves in terms of its economic prowess,” Speier, D-San Mateo, said at an April 8 ceremony.

The station now features a 700-foot center-boarding platform and pedestrian underpass to ensure passengers don’t have to cross the tracks to board the train. Safety considerations previously created an operational bottleneck on the railroad, forcing passengers to cross tracks to board trains at a center boarding platform. The improvements ensure more than one train can use the station at a time. Multiple trains can now enter or pass through the station at once, allowing for more flexible scheduling for future increased electrified service. Caltrain is moving to an electric train fleet that will increase trains and speed while lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

The improvements make the station fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Other upgrades include more ticket vending machines and Clipper card readers, multiple shelters, 24 bike racks, upgraded lighting, and a new shuttle pick-up and drop-off area.

Speier touted the improved accessibility for bikers and pedestrians and its role in reducing traffic and increasing options for nearby residents. The station was first put into service in 1909, with the improvements ensuring its readiness for the 21st century.

“Making the station accessible and adding modern electrification means we will have a first-rate station here,” Speier said.

Assembly Speaker per Tem Kevin Mullin, D-South San Francisco, noted station improvement discussions have been ongoing since his time on the South San Francisco City Council. He thanked everyone for their work in ensuring a brighter transit future for the city and region.

“South City is doing exactly what the state of California wants cities to be doing. Just look around, and you can see a model right here,” Mullin said.

The downtown area surrounding the train station will see significant changes in the coming years, with development coming for more housing and retail. South San Francisco officials redesigned the downtown station area within a half-mile of the Caltrain station on and around Grand Avenue. The train station can also help in revitalizing the shopping and dining downtown corridor and anchoring housing nearby. Over the next 20 years, South San Francisco is calling for around 1,400 new housing units, 800,000 square feet of commercial space, 21,000 square feet for industrial use and 1.2 million square feet of new office space.

“The enhancements made to this Caltrain station are a game-changer for South San Francisco residents and visitors in terms of connectivity and walkability,” South San Francisco Mayor Mark Nagales said.

“I see this as part of a continuum. We are electrifying Caltrain, which is going to be an incredible effort to make Caltrain even more of a crown jewel it needs to be for this Peninsula,” state Sen. Josh Becker, D-San Mateo, said.

Caltrain Vice Chair Charles Stone, also a Belmont council member, praised its proximity to downtown and increasing accessibility.

“These significant changes we are seeing at the South San Francisco Station are the ones we need to make this system accessible to all in an equitable way in the years to come,” Stone said.

Funding for the $96.6 million project came from the San Mateo County Transportation Authority, South San Francisco and the Federal Transit Administration. The San Mateo County Transportation Authority provided around $44 million to help rebuild the train station, according to Caltrain spokesperson Dan Lieberman. Federal funding provided $39 million, about a third of the project. South San Francisco provided around $12 million, Lieberman said. The Transportation Authority allocates the county’s half-cent sales tax dedicated to transit needs.

Nagales announced the plaza area near the Caltrain station would be named after Karyl Matsumoto, former South San Francisco mayor and Transportation Authority chair, whose instrumental work helped ensure the project occurred. The naming was done to recognize women who made significant impacts in South San Francisco. The plaza will be constructed in 2023 with a lawn and planting area.

“We have officially moved from a train stop to a bona fide train station for our community and riders,” Matsumoto said.

The month of June is filled with many things – the end of the school year and the start of summer vacation, Father’s Day and the anticipation of the vacation.

June is also Pride month for LGBTQ + communities in the US and other countries around the world.

Pride Month is a time to honor our country’s diversity in terms of sexual orientation and gender identity.

The first Pride Parade took place in New York City in 1970. The annual event coincides with the 1969 Stonewall Riots.

One of the most iconic symbols of Pride Month is the rainbow flag, created by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker in 1978. The colors of the flag are associated with diversity.

Every year, LGBTQ + communities honor Pride Month with a variety of events and activities such as parades, festivals, screenings, and concerts.

While many in-person events were canceled due to the pandemic over the past year, communities across the state and across the country are planning a mix of in-person and virtual events to celebrate Pride Month.

Below are eight in-person events taking place in Colorado and Wyoming that celebrate Pride Month 2021.

1. Boulder County Pride is scheduled for Monday June 7th through June 13th with a jam-packed calendar of events including a motorcade, drive-in movie screening, name and gender change clinic, storytimes, and mixers. The free event is open to all ages. More information is available at www.outboulder.org.

2. The Pride Kickoff will be held on Friday, June 11th, 5pm to 10pm at Ellson Farms, 10450 W. Bowles Ave., Littleton. The event features live performances, vendors, food trucks, and more.
After a year of pandemic that changed work and leisure, Father’s Day gifts can comfort old favorites or celebrate exciting new interests.

Here’s a selection of high- and low-tech goodies for an epic Father’s Day, from a personalized song service to some souped-up Lego models.

TO EAT AND DRINK

Interest in homebrewing has increased, according to San Francisco-based research firm Grand View Research. With the starter kits from Brooklyn Brew you choose a variety – including IPA, Porter, Ale, Stout – and receive 10 bottles, 50 caps and a capping tool along with the ingredients. ($ 85) The starter shower set includes a pot, strainer, spoon, funnel, and siphon. ($ 175)

Northern Brewer’s Siphonless Fermenter also simplifies the process with instructional videos. ($ 199.95 and up).

Recommended

If dad prefers his beer without the kick, Brew Your Own magazine has the information on how to make a non-alcoholic version by adjusting the heat and ingredients. For the taste of schnapps with no noise, consider Ritual’s handcrafted non-alcoholic versions of tequila, whiskey, or gin.

To enjoy the casual drink and also to help the wildlife, consider Glenorangie’s Giraffe Tin. The Highland Scotch Maker’s stills are the tallest in Scotland – the size of a giraffe – and the collection jar is patterned like the animal’s fur. Every purchase supports the Giraffe Conservation Foundation.

You can order a set of personalized glasses from Stationery Studio. Choose from a variety of sand-etched monogram styles. Or, download a picture of the family from the CuttingEdgeBoston Etsy page and they’ll laser it onto a glass or goblet.

Grillers like the Man Crates Kebab King box, which comes with all the skewers, sauces, spices, and cleaning wipes needed to sear Argentine, Japanese, and Indian kebabs. The company also offers kits for preparing other foods, including hot sauce, bacon, roasted coffee beans, donuts or tacos. ($ 29.99-179.99)

Those who don’t have a backyard BBQ area can enjoy the craft with the handy grill from Kenyon’s City Grill. Or choose the 5-in-1 from Ninja Food, which allows you to grill, bake, roast and air-fry indoors.

For a gourmet dining experience at home, consider ordering one of Goldbelly’s special dishes. Top restaurants are among the listings. The company also offers a variety of desserts from bakeries and restaurants across the country.

LEARN

Give dad a masterclass in something he dearly wanted to take away. Rockers could enjoy some electric guitar lessons with Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine; Wine critic James Suckling talks about the appreciation of wine; Ron Finley walks you through the basics of gardening.

TOY STORIES

Is Papa a Mustermann? Lego has a 1,087-piece Apollo 11 moon lander kit. ($ 99.99) Car enthusiasts could opt for the chic Ferrari GTE with realistic features. ($ 169.99) Or maybe the rare 1989 Batmobile model, all over 3,300 pieces. ($ 249.99)

Wooden Town has a buildable pinball roller coaster made from laser cut pieces of birch plywood that fit together without glue. ($ 79) You can also find buildings, boats, and all kinds of steampunk-style clocks here.

CRAFTS AND PROJECTS

Man Crates has some fun gift boxes that contain everything you need to make a leather belt, fishing lure, or bird house.

If dad discovered the joys of DIY during the pandemic, Craftsman has a 57-piece tool set with pliers, socket wrenches, screwdrivers and measuring tape in a sturdy case. They also have one for training sons and daughters with eight child-sized tools.

Ryobi’s 5-piece set consisting of a drill, handheld vacuum cleaner, saw, grinder, light, batteries and charger is a good DIY set. ($ 149)

And Backdrop, the DTC paint company, has a nice essentials kit with three paint rollers, handles, painter’s tape, tray and liners, and a handy breadboard for storage. ($ 45)

Would you like to work on something together? Online site The Woodwork Place has guides to simple projects dads and kids can do together, like salt and pepper shakers, picture frames, boxes, planters, shelves, and even a pallet lamp. Or try making a copper wind chime, a ring of fire or a tiled table: instructions are available on the Family Handyman website.

ENTERTAINMENT

There is something for everyone in a bookstore; Check out your local store for books, puzzles, and more.

In terms of TV and music, consider the Phillips 4 device universal remote that provides control over multiple Amazon and Roku devices. And The Daily Edited has stylish AirPod cases made of pebbled leather that can be personalized with initials, names or text in different fonts and colors.

Or here’s a new way to save memories: with a Qeepsake subscription, dad can answer a few questions and submit photos each week, and Qeepsake creates a soft or hardcover book at the end of the year. It is also a nice present for parents-to-be.

Songfinch creates a personalized song. Work with them on the style, mood, and moments that the melody should convey; You choose a professional artist to write and record the song and in a week you will have a personalized page to listen, download and share.

SPORTS

Tennis nuts can carry the Slinger portable tennis ball thrower onto the court; The bag holds 144 balls, and thanks to the five-hour battery, dad can practice his strokes for as long as he wants.

For golfers, Rapsodo’s Mobile Launch Monitor app helps perfect their swing with technical analysis and instant video to save and share with other players.

To keep an eye on fitness, Oura’s smart ring tracks sleep patterns and other activities. Link the Oura app to Apple Health or Google Fit.

DRESS

Help dad get the best night’s sleep with nightwear from the Swiss-Swedish brand Dagsmejan. Your trademarked fabrics stay cool and are soft, breathable and moisture-wicking.

Bill Murray fans could look forward to a pair of swim shorts from the actor’s Life Aquatic-inspired collection for his sportswear label William Murray. Scuba Steve, jaguar sharks and of course the Deep Search submarine can be seen in the trunks.

It was a long wait, but the San Francisco Giants worshipers dressed in their orange and black again on Friday April 9th and headed to Oracle Park to support and celebrate the city’s baseball team. The home opening series against the Colorado Rockies is the first time since 2019 that fans have been able to personally support the Giants after playing in a nearly empty stadium for the entire 2020 season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Thanks to San Francisco in California’s orange category, the Giants were able to accommodate around 8,900 fans, or 22 percent of the seats in Oracle Park. Fans had to show either proof of a COVID-19 vaccine or a recent negative coronavirus test to enter the stadium and the lines into the stadium appeared to be moving smoothly and efficiently.

Despite the restrictions, there was a feeling of exuberance among the Giants fans arriving at the stadium. And in the end, the Giants scored a big win too: a 3-1 win over the Rockies, aided by a solid pitching performance from Johnny Cueto and a two-RBI attempt by shortstop Brandon Crawford. After Friday, San Francisco is 4-3 in the season. The home games are scheduled until Wednesday April 14th.

Truth could be harder than a lump of coal – the entire Bay Area is officially closed for the holidays. With indoor and outdoor dining canceled, the whole season looks a little bleak this year. What are the holidays without big dinner reservations, awkward private parties, or drunken Santas roaming downtown bars? Well, we’ll find out in a moment.

For those who make themselves comfortable at home, the restaurants are still open for takeout and delivery. And when we get through this thing, we might as well do it with prime ribs, garlic noodles, and tamales, not to mention stollen and nog. So put some more twinkling lights on, put on your most stretchy pants, and pour a take-away cocktail. How to celebrate Christmas 2020 in San Francisco.

Specific regional lists

Important Note: Similar to the start of the pandemic, in the face of the sudden shutdown, restaurants have made an effort to add takeout and delivery options. In the days leading up to Christmas, many launched special holiday menus that will sell out quickly. This makes it impossible to keep a comprehensive list, but some local publications have specific lists that might help.

For San Francisco:

For the East Bay:

Plus, here are some long-standing and trusted favorites from Eater editors and readers. And it’s also worth checking out your favorite spots in the neighborhood, which may offer smaller menus and would be very happy to receive a big tip at the end of this tough year.

Izzy’s Steakhouse

Trust a steakhouse to really treat a roast properly and Izzy’s will wrap it up for smaller parties at home. A prime rib dinner with horseradish cream and roasted vegetables is $ 175 for 4 to 6 people. It’s worth adding in gratinated potatoes and creamed spinach, and they all go on cakes, with seven different types of juicy cakes, including a grandma-style carrot cake soaked in Grand Marnier. And who doesn’t love a naughty grandma?

Hahdough

The only dedicated German bakery in San Francisco promises the particularly crispy and spicy biscuits such as vanilla croissants (powdered moons), shortbread cookies (hazelnuts dipped in dark chocolate), rascals (filled with jam) and more fun treats this year. But the mini-stollen is also a small portion of the Christmas spirit that has been made smaller especially for Christmas in quarantine.

Andytown coffee roaster

Sunset’s favorite cafe keeps it mint-fresh this holiday season. The mint mocha swirls in chocolate from Guittard and syrup from Oaktown and makes you buzz like a Christmas elf through the last deadlines of the year.

Pacific Cocktail Haven

The Miracle Pop-up Bar at Pacific Cocktail Haven usually draws a loud crowd, but although al fresco dining is canceled, the festive cocktails are also available to take away. Read the full list of Mulled Wines and Nogs in Novel Mugs. Because what is Christmas without a mug in the shape of a T-Rex wearing a Santa hat?

Iron horse vineyards

Why not shop in bubbles and buy California sparkling wine this year? Iron Horse in Russian River has a special rosé that will benefit the Sonoma County Resilience Fund, and the wine country really deserves it after this forest fire season.

Almanac Beer Co.

The Alameda Brewery has an ugly, hazy IPA with sweater-themed what they call “tropical” and “grateful,” and probably a party to sip in a hot tub. The Bunny Hill IPA is soft and clean by comparison, and has possibly the nicest can of the season. But for those who can’t decide, there is also an advent calendar situation with 12 beers for Christmas.
