Filming of Peaky Blinders at Black Country Living Museum. Paul Anderson and Cillian Murphy.

Presenters Matt Edmondson and Mollie King were quizzed by a man named Jonathan as part of the Have You Been Paying Attention Quiz on Sunday.

It sees the pair asked about things which have happened during the week by a listener – with the first question of the segment being about Peaky Blinders.

And it led to a gaffe with the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley, the answer to the question, being labeled as in Birmingham despite the museum’s obvious name.

Jonathan asked: “Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has said the story could potentially return to television with a new creative team. What museum is the series filmed in, in Birmingham?”

Matt said he “didn’t know it was filmed inside a museum” which was backed up by fellow presenter Molly. The male presenter added the show was something he “tried to watch” but he never warmed to it – despite joking he was jealous of the suits and flat caps, but would look like a “little chimney sweep” if he replicated it.

Matt added: “It’s got to be like a museum of old Britain, hasn’t it? When is it set, like around the war isn’t it? The museum of the 20s or 30s. Hang on, in Birmingham there’s a chocolate factory. No, is there a museum of chocolate? No, they wouldn’t film it there, that would make no sense.”

The two presenters asked to be put out of their misery – with Jonathan revealing the answer, although he got the name wrong – saying “It’s the Black Country Living History Museum” to which Matt responded: “of course, the BCLHM that one.”

And the presenter added: “I think there are people who worked on Peaky Blinders who are going ‘I don’t know the answer to that question’.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced a state of emergency Thursday over the rapidly growing number of monkeypox cases in the city.

The legal action, which goes into effect Monday, allows officials to mobilize personnel and resources and cut through red tape to get ahead of the mounting public health crisis. City officials hope that the declaration will also pressure the federal government to increase the available supply of the monkeypox vaccine.

“We are at a very scary place,” Breed said at a press conference held at City Hall on Thursday. “We don’t want to be ignored by the federal government.”

Earlier this week, San Francisco had to shut down its primary monkeypox vaccination clinic at SF General Hospital for the second time this month after it again ran out of doses, turning away long lines of people. The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) said it was expecting to receive an additional 4,220 doses of the vaccine this week, bringing the total number of vaccines received to roughly 12,000 — about a third of the supply they’ve requested from the federal government.

“We have a solution in the vaccines and we want to make sure that everyone who is requesting a vaccine gets one,” Breed said.

News of the declaration — which comes amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic — was welcomed by LGBTQ+ advocates who have grown increasingly frustrated by what they call a lackluster response from the city and the federal government to a virus that can infect anyone, but has so far primarily affected communities of gay and bisexual men, and men who have sex with men.

“We know the challenges of what happens in San Francisco when we put public health on the back burner,” said Breed. “During the AIDS crisis … San Francisco was virtually left on its own to fend for itself.”

During the initial onset of the HIV/AIDS crisis in San Francisco during the 1980s, the majority of infections were among gay and bisexual men, and men who have sex with men. City Health Director Dr. Grant Colfax praised the way local care providers reacted to HIV/AIDS back then and said that response has informed the way San Francisco is responding to monkeypox now.

“As a gay man who came out and did my medical training during the peak of the AIDS epidemic,” Colfax said, “I personally and professionally experienced the indifference, the homophobia and the stigma by the medical and public health institutions in regard to prioritizing HIV prevention and care.”

“But San Francisco’s community-driven and responsive care systems were a notable exception.”

As details of the elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, continue to unfold, San Francisco Giants manager Gabe Kapler wrote on Friday that he is “not okay with the state of this country” and that he “felt like a coward” for not protesting “the lack of delivery on the promise of what our national anthem represents.”

Kapler told reporters before Friday’s series opener at Cincinnati that, moving forward, he doesn’t plan on taking the field for the national anthem “until I feel better about the direction of our country” and that he needs more time to consider specific actions he might suggest be taken to prevent more tragedies of this type, such as stronger gun control laws.

“I don’t expect it to move the needle necessarily,” Kapler said of his decision not to take the field for the anthem. “It’s just something that I feel strongly enough about to take that step.”

Kapler, in a blog post published earlier Friday on his lifestyle brand website, said he was disappointed in himself for not making some sort of protest during the playing of the national anthem Wednesday.

An 18-year-old gunman killed 19 children and two teachers Tuesday at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. In Buffalo, New York, 10 people were killed May 14 when an 18-year-old gunman opened fire in a supermarket. Both gunmen were using AR-15-style assault rifles.

2 Related

“When I was the same age as the children in Uvalde, my father taught me to stand for the pledge of allegiance when I believed my country was representing its people well or to protest and stay seated when it wasn’t. I don’t believe it is representing us well right now,” Kapler wrote.

“… Every time I place my hand over my heart and remove my hat, I’m participating in a self congratulatory glorification of the ONLY country where these mass shootings take place. On Wednesday, I walked out onto the field, I listened to the announcement as we honored the victims in Uvalde. I bowed my head. I stood for the national anthem. Metallica riffed on City Connect guitars.”

Kapler said he wanted to make some sort of gesture, but said he was conscious that it could be misunderstood as an act meant to be offensive “to the military, to veterans, to themselves.”

“My brain said drop to a knee; my body didn’t listen. I wanted to walk back inside; instead I froze. I felt like a coward. I didn’t want to call attention to myself. I didn’t want to take away from the victims or their families.

“… But I am not okay with the state of this country. I wish I hadn’t let my discomfort compromise my integrity. I wish that I could have demonstrated what I learned from my dad, that when you’re dissatisfied with your country, you let it be known through protest. The home of the brave should encourage this.”

Only seven Giants were on the field — two coaches in front of the dugout, four players along the left-field line and an athletic trainer standing alongside them — when “The Star-Spangled Banner” was played at Great American Ball Park before Kapler and Reds manager David Bell exchanged lineup cards. The game started after a 2-hour, 8-minute rain delay.

Kapler said he “was not in my best place mentally” on the day of the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde.

“I knew that it was in connection with some of the hypocrisies for the national anthem and how it coincided with the moment of silence and how two things didn’t synch up well for me, but I couldn’t make sense of it in real time and it took me a couple of days to pull all my thoughts together,” Kapler said Friday.

Kapler is the latest example of how several notable sports figures — including Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr — have used their platforms over the past few days to plead for action to combat gun violence.

On Thursday, the social media teams for the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees collaborated in an effort to raise awareness about gun violence in the United States. Throughout the game, the teams posted identical facts — attributing where they got them — in concert with each other to their combined 4.25 million followers on Twitter.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

In June, Dylan Raymos, a San Francisco resident, was arrested in Redwood City for allegedly having unlawful sex with the girl and was ordered not to have contact with her, prosecutors said.

However, he disobeyed the order, picked up the girl at her home on July 7, and went to the airport. Prosecutors said that US Customs and Border Protection approached him on the plane and learned he was violating a court order and fleeing the country. Raymos admitted email contact and said the girl had agreed to travel with him to Portugal through Amsterdam, and he planned to marry her, prosecutors said.

The victim’s family statements gave in court that persuaded the judge to go beyond the two years initially considered and go with four years, prosecutors said. He was also ordered not to contact the victim for 10 years.

For Tina Garrity, the decision to relocate from Chicago to Paradise Valley, Arizona, during the early months of the pandemic was an easy one.

Ms. Garrity, 57, who owns a management consulting business, has been visiting the Phoenix area to see her family for decades. In March 2019, she bought a 6,400-square-foot home for $1.85 million in Paradise Valley, planning to stay there a few times a year. But when the pandemic hit, she started working remotely and decided to make it her primary residence.

Unlike her two-bedroom Chicago rental with no outdoor space, Ms. Garrity’s Paradise Valley estate, complete with a guest house, tennis court and putting green, spans just over an acre.

“Having a backyard and having space has made a huge difference in work and life in general,” said Ms. Garrity, who has kept her Chicago apartment when she has to visit clients in town.

More: North Dakota’s most expensive home for sale is a Fargo Megamansion, listed for $2.85 million

Ms. Garrity is one of many out-of-state buyers who have moved to Paradise Valley since the pandemic began, creating unprecedented demand in the affluent town between Phoenix and Scottsdale, according to real estate agent Joan Levinson.

The suburb has long been little known outside of Arizona, although it attracted high-profile residents like Randy Johnson, Mike Tyson, Stevie Nicks, and Muhammad Ali. But since Covid, agents said, droves of shoppers from New York, California and elsewhere – who are now able to work remotely – have set their sights on Paradise Valley. They are drawn to Arizona’s warm weather and low taxes, as well as Paradise Valley’s privacy, spacious lots and proximity to Phoenix and Scottsdale city life.

Before the pandemic, most of the activity in the Paradise Valley market came from wealthy locals, with some coming from out-of-state buyers primarily looking for second homes, Ms Levinson said. Now overseas buyers are flooding the market in search of first homes, she said.

More: Palm Beach Mansion sells for $22.5 million — $4.5 million up from June trading

“Before the pandemic, we always had some out-of-state buyers, but the vast majority of buyers were Arizona residents,” said local broker Greg Hague.

According to Mr. Hague, prices have skyrocketed in Paradise Valley. The average list price of Paradise Valley homes is now just over $5 million, about double what it was three years ago, he said. In PropertyShark’s 2021 ranking of the most expensive US ZIP Codes, Paradise Valley was ranked 50th with a median selling price of $2.175 million, a 41% increase from 2020. That’s a dramatic change from 2019, when the city first appeared on the list 93.

The city is now attracting wealthier people than ever before.

“Our mainstream client probably had a net worth of $50 million about three years ago,” said Rich Brock, president and founder of Paradise Valley-based construction company BedBrock Developers. “Now it’s definitely over $100 million, and a good handful is over half a billion.”

Nestled between Scottsdale and Phoenix, Paradise Valley is surrounded by mountains. The city has several golf courses and high-end resorts, including the Camelback Mountain Sanctuary, which was recently acquired by New York-based Gurney’s Resorts. Later this year, the Ritz-Carlton Paradise Valley at The Palmeraie will open with villas and a resort.

Aside from the resorts, the city is almost entirely residential, with most single-family lots divided into zones spanning an acre or more, according to Paradise Valley Mayor Jerry Bien-Willner, who said the big lots are during the pandemic has been a major draw.

In June 2021, Samantha and Morgan Dollard registered their San Francisco home and set out to find a new place to live. Mrs. Dollard, 38, is a mother and homemaker, and Mr. Dollard, 42, works remotely in product management in the technology industry. They have three children of primary school age. In October 2020, they were overwhelmed by the challenges of distance learning and switched to homeschooling. Since their children were no longer going to school in California, they decided to sell.

“We were looking for something less busy,” said Mrs. Dollard. “We were looking for more space. We were looking for more peace. We felt like we were always stressed and running around the Bay Area.”

After considering locations like Orange County, San Diego, Boulder and Denver, they settled on Paradise Valley, she said. About two weeks into their road trip, they sold their 3,000-square-foot home in San Francisco for $3.25 million, she said. About a month later, they bought a 5,800-square-foot, 5-bedroom home in Paradise Valley for $2.875 million.

More: A stone home outside of downtown Charleston, South Carolina has the air of an English mansion

“Each of the children has their own room, my husband has his own office,” Ms Dollard said. “It feels like we have space to just be.”

For many buyers, Ms. Levinson said, Paradise Valley is attractive because of its proximity to city amenities; The city is approximately 4 miles from downtown Scottsdale and 15 miles from downtown Phoenix.

That was a big plus for Connie De Groot and her fiancé, Richard Engel, a real estate developer who moved to Paradise Valley from Santa Monica, California, in 2021. Ms. De Groot, a real estate agent, has family in Phoenix and Mr. Engel has been developing properties in Arizona for about three decades. They said they were drawn to Paradise Valley because it has spacious properties, quiet streets, lots of greenery and its own police department, while being close to the city life of Phoenix and Scottsdale. “We wanted to be close to restaurants and things because that’s what we have in Santa Monica,” Ms. De Groot said.

As with a number of other transplants, Ms De Groot, 58, and Mr Engel, 76, said politics played a role in their decision to move their primary residence to Arizona. In California, they feel that local politics has led to rising crime, higher taxes, congestion and homelessness. Also, everything is under lockdown in California, Ms De Groot said, but they can go to restaurants and gyms in Arizona.

More: California Megamansion With a Shark Tank sells for $42 million, a Coachella Valley record

In March 2021, they bought a house in Paradise Valley for about $3.3 million. A few months later, a newer home in town with more space became available, so they bought it for $5.799 million and sold the first home for about $350,000 more than they paid. Your new property is spread over 2 acres with a pool, two casitas, a pickleball court, a citrus garden and a koi pond. It’s about 2,500 square feet larger than her California home, which sits on less than an acre. Yet their taxes are significantly lower, Mr. Engel said.

Although Ms. De Groot and Mr. Engel have made Paradise Valley their primary residence, they still own their home in California and plan to spend time there, particularly during Paradise Valley’s hotter months, which typically last from June through August. During those months, agents said, many local residents sought refuge in their second homes, either out of state or in the mountains about a two-hour drive from the city.

As in other high-end markets across the country, inventories have dwindled in Paradise Valley, which has pushed prices even higher. “In all the years I’ve sold properties in Paradise Valley, there have typically been 300 to 400 houses on the market at any one time,” Mr. Hague said; In contrast, as of January 25, only 78 homes were listed.

More: How do you bring happiness and prosperity into your home? Hire a feng shui expert

For David Wurtz, a 37-year-old tech executive, the warm weather made him move to Arizona with his wife and family from Boulder, Colorado last year. Mr. Wurtz, who was familiar with Arizona from growing up, said they moved because pandemic-related lockdowns halted many of their children’s indoor activities. In Paradise Valley, on the other hand, most after-school events can take place outdoors.

They sold their home in Boulder and bought a 14,000-square-foot Spanish Colonial building in Paradise Valley for about $13.5 million. The 6-acre property includes a swimming pool, basketball court and exercise track that extends around the perimeter.

“We’re having fun in Paradise Valley,” said Mr. Wurtz.

The study, published September 14 in peer-reviewed Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that an ethnic degree in San Francisco in ninth grade was associated with significant, long-term benefits, including improved high school -Degree and better enrollment in college prices. The results, published during a moment of divisive backlash against the use of the so-called Critical Race Theory in schools, suggest that students who have difficulty in class become more involved in school when the class reflects their lived experiences.

“This really lifts the curtain for students,” said co-author Sade Bonilla, assistant professor of education at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Ethnic courses like the one in San Francisco give students a better understanding of society, she said, and how long-standing issues like oppression and racism affect their lives and the world around them. The course also provides students with tools to fight racism and build more equitable communities.

“The way these issues are discussed is not just about telling students, ‘The world is bad out there and it’s going to be tough,'” said Bonilla, but instead offers classes on topics such as school segregation and housing discrimination and highlights people who respond to injustices.

Similar courses could soon hit schools across California. On Wednesday, the state Senate passed law requiring all districts to offer at least one ethnic degree and make it compulsory by the end of the decade.

We made it! Grateful to the #CASenat for voting on # AB101 this morning and for the numerous coalitions and factions that have come together to make this bill what it is. #CAleg #ethnicstudies #diversifyournarrative @GENupUS pic.twitter.com/nlm8t8R0h7

– Jose Medina (@AsmJoseMedina) September 8, 2021

To arrive at their conclusions in San Francisco, the researchers examined the high school transcripts and college enrollment records of more than 1,400 high school freshmen between 2011 and 2014, including teenagers who were ethnicized because they were in eighth grade struggled academically. The researchers found that students enrolled in the ethnic studies class were 16 to 19 percentage points more likely to graduate from high school than their peers and 10 to 16 percentage points more likely to attend college.

The Anthropology course deals with issues of social justice, stereotypes and social movements in the USA between the 18th century and the 1970s. Many of the lessons are traditionally not covered in typical social science courses, such as the Native American Genocide in California.

While the report has been in the works for years, it doesn’t shrink from the reality that anti-racist doctrines got caught up in the national culture wars this year. It acknowledges that some ethnic studies programs have accused ethnic studies of offering nothing more than “politically charged indoctrination” promoting some form of “reverse racism” against white students.

But the debate over such teaching, loosely characterized under the umbrella of critical racial theory, is “quite dishonest” and politically motivated, Bonilla said. “The agenda that drives them forward” in ethnic college classes, she said, is a real conversation about the historical realities of racism in the United States.

Ethnic studies have been a sensitive issue in California for several years. In March, state education leaders approved a model ethnic study curriculum that had been in development for years and was accused of anti-Semitism, which encouraged the “awakened” left wing propaganda and sewed further racial segregation by teaching white children to feel guilty about past injustices . The curriculum controversy continues unabated. Earlier last month, three San Diego parents sued the state education department, accusing officials of violating the California constitution’s facility clause, which mandates separation of church and state, by including an Aztec prayer in the model curriculum. The model curriculum is not a mandate and only encourages the California counties to offer ethnic studies, but the new legislation may change that.

The latest research is a follow-up to a 2017 report that found positive short-term benefits for freshmen at high schools who enrolled in the city’s ethnic degree program. This report found that 9th grade students had better school attendance, better grades, and more classes than those who hadn’t enrolled on the course. To measure the long-term impact of the course, the latest study examines the educational outcomes of the same group of students during high school and college.

Thomas Dee, professor at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Education and co-author of the study, praised the results of the previous study and said he was “never so surprised by a result” in his career. He quipped that “innovative curricula,” including the San Francisco ethnic studies program, were the “low-hanging fruit of educational reform.” The latest study, he said, further supports that assessment.

“I am still amazed and fascinated that we see the educational power of this type of culturally relevant education,” said Dee. While many historically underserved students “perceive their classrooms as hostile and threatening environments,” a course that enables them to see the world the way they do can change those perceptions with ongoing educational benefits, he said. Emily Penner, Assistant Professor of Education at the University of California, Irvine, also contributed to the report.

“Pedagogy that engages students who can nurture affiliation with school institutions has the ability to unleash their motivation,” said Dee. “And I think the fact that we’re seeing these sustained gains in particular is evidence of that.”

However, the researchers quickly highlighted the limits of their research and discouraged people from falling victim to the “general trope of the wonder weapon”. For one thing, it remains unclear how ethnic courses affect the educational outcomes of high-performing students. In addition, Dee said the ethnic studies teachers in San Francisco are highly qualified and motivated to teach the class.

“I sometimes worry that some kind of useless, inferior introduction to this curriculum isn’t going to produce similar results,” he added.

If California Governor Gavin Newsom, whose education policy is expected to play a key role in a September 14 recall vote, signs law requiring nationwide ethnic studies, it will be important that districts be given adequate time to develop robust programs and ensure that educators are properly trained.

“Teaching ethnic studies requires a particularly high level of professionalism on the part of teachers,” said Dee. “We ask teachers to go into the classroom and have potentially difficult, critical discussions with their students, and I think it takes really careful crafting to do this well.”

The Bay Area has the dubious honor of having the most expensive gasoline in the United States.

The average value for normal gas in the Bay Area was about $ 4.33 a gallon on Sunday, an increase of about 7 cents over the past week, said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said the spike across the country is less than rising crude oil prices, which means another spike is in sight. This, in addition to wholesale increases and new taxes on gas, could fuel cost hikes across the country.

These cost increases as well as the shortage of labor in the industry mean that gas prices will probably continue to rise in the summer without any major relief. Truck drivers and other gasoline workers were laid off during the pandemic, creating staffing problems.

“It can take a while [until gas prices go down] because of the ongoing COVID-induced headache, “said De Haan.” The oil industry has made long-term decisions to stop production and here we are and now the oil industry is in the same boat as everyone else with work challenges. “

In the Bay Area and all of the west coast, the problem will be worse than in many other parts of the country, according to De Haan.

“Unfortunately, the west coast, including California, Oregon, and Washington, has not just seen the traditional surge in demand like the rest of the country like COVID has [increased demand], but there were some refinements that made the issues worse, “he told SFGATE.

These refining problems, while minor, are significant enough to “overturn” the supply, he said.

De Haan believes that gas prices in the Bay Area could hit $ 4.50 in the summer due to pandemic demand, pandemic labor shortages and these refining issues. Peak gas prices are likely to come in four to six weeks.

There’s a small silver lining, De Haan says, that gas prices are unlikely to break the record highs of 2012 when a gallon could average $ 4.75 in the bay.

Another point of help could come if remote workers are allowed to stay away all year round, said De Haan. The gas industry usually sees prices drop at the end of summer when the summer road trips and weekend getaways run out, but he fears that once people are encouraged to re-enter the personal world of work, this well-known source of reduced gas prices could disappear.

“If these commuters return this fall, it could offset this seasonal downturn and keep prices high,” he said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
