First it was Vincent van Gogh, and now Pablo Picasso is in the spotlight. Make that a giant spotlight.

Imagine Picasso, an immersive, multimedia experience produced by the same creative team behind the Imagine Van Gogh immersive exhibit, is set to make its US debut on Wednesday, February 9, at Skylight at The Armory. The exhibition made its debut in Lyon, France, before moving to Quebec, Vancouver, and now San Francisco.

The exhibition uses more than 200 paintings from museum collections, including the Musée Picasso in Paris, the Museu Picasso in Barcelona, the MoMa (Museum of Modern Art) in New York, and the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, as well as private collections. Those images are then projected onto origami structures — inspired by some of Picasso’s later work — that are up to 26 feet tall.

“It’s very interesting for visitors to see Pablo Picasso in a new way,” Olivier Widmaier Picasso, Picasso’s grandson, told TravelAwaits in a statement. “I think this exhibition would have pleased my grandfather a lot because he was, above all, a man of freedom.”

A Legendary Artist

Born in Malaga, Spain, in 1881, “Picasso attended art schools in his native Spain and in his late teens aligned his sensibilities with bohemian writers and artists in Barcelona and Madrid who opposed Spain’s stalled social hierarchies and conservative culture,” the National Gallery of Art explains. “After early work inspired by international models — the anguished, attenuated figures of El Greco, the dark, moody outlines of symbolism, and the sinuous curvatures of Art nouveau to name a few — Picasso began to find his own vision.”

Picasso is perhaps the best known for his Cubist work. After all, he and French artist Georges Braque co-founded the art movement known as Cubism in 1909.

However, Picasso was, if nothing else, eclectic. Other pieces of his work are known as great works of Classicism and the Surreal movements.

Picasso was also known for his prodigious output. Indeed, in his lifetime, Picasso produced about 147,800 pieces. Of that work, 13,500 are paintings, 100,000 are prints and engravings, 300 are sculptures and ceramics, and 34,000 are illustrations.

You may be familiar with The Old Guitarist. That notable piece was from Picasso’s so-called “blue period,” when he only used shades of blue to explore themes of poverty and suffering.

And then there’s Guernica, which could very well be Picasso’s best-known work. The disturbing painting — in muted shades of gray — depicts an aerial bombing on the Basque town of Guernica in April 1937, during the Spanish Civil War.

Picasso died in 1972 at the age of 91.

The Immersive Approach

French filmmaker and photographer Albert Plécy invented the concept of Image Totale in 1977 as a means to immerse spectators in an image. His granddaughter-in-law, Annabelle Mauger, worked directly with Plecy.

Imagine Picasso was conceptualized by Mauger and Julien Baron to offer a new perspective on Picasso’s work.

“We created this exhibition so guests can step into Picasso’s paintings through a dialogue of detail and depth,” Mauger, creator of Imagine Picasso and the original creator of the first immersive Van Gogh exhibition, told TravelAwaits in a statement. “It’s important that people of all ages, backgrounds, and artistic knowledge have the same opportunity to experience his works. Immersive exhibitions open the door for younger generations to celebrate his work, allowing Picasso’s legacy and influence on the arts to live on.”

How To Enjoy Imagine Picasso

Imagine Picasso is a limited 8-week engagement at Skylight at The Armory in San Francisco. Tickets for the exhibit, which will run from February 9 through March 27, are on sale now.

You can buy tickets here.

Finally, it should be pointed out that Imagine Picasso will follow all CDC and city of San Francisco COVID-19 protocols, including operating at a reduced capacity. Proof of vaccination is required for entry and masks must be worn at all times, regardless of vaccination status.

Following the success of several Vincent Van Gogh interactive exhibitions in the United States – including Immersive Van Gogh and Van Gogh Alive – a new immersive art exhibition featuring works by French painter Claude Monet will debut in San Francisco in December.

Monet at the water commemorates the 180th birthday of the French painter. Other stops on the multi-city tour are Minneapolis, Atlanta, Seattle, Miami, Denver, St. Louis and Philadelphia.

Much like the immersive exhibits by Dutch painter Van Gogh, the Monet touring exhibition will use 21st century technology to bring Monet’s impressionist paintings, such as his famous Water Lilies series, to life.

According to one of the exhibition producers, CBF Productions, the “360-degree multi-sensor experience” includes more than 300 works of Monet’s art, which are projected onto 8 meter high screens, accompanied by original music and sound effects. It will be 40,000 square feet and visitors will be able to wander through the 60 minute experience.

Details about dates and locations not yet known

Information on specific locations and dates for Monet by the Water is still under lock and key. In fact, the event space for the San Francisco debut is only described as a “secret place”.

Would you like to receive the shovel sooner rather than later? Enter your email address on the event website to be the first to learn about the San Francisco venue, buy early bird tickets, and receive special offers.

According to CBF Productions, the exhibit is designed to provide guests with a unified experience, as opposed to some immersive exhibits that tailor their experience to the venue.

“We see Monet as a pioneer of immersion who completely surrounds people with the beauty and precision of his colors,” said Ricardo Dotta, co-founder of Mira, the Museum of Immersive Roaming Arts, another event producer. “In honor of this idea, we want Monet by the Water to expand his work through technological possibilities and create spaces in which the landscape corresponds to the viewer’s scale.”

Another impressive Monet exhibition is coming to the United States

As with the competing Van Gogh immersive exhibitions, there are several Monet digital exhibits.

Claude Monet: The Immersive Experience is currently located in Naples, Italy. It is set to debut in Los Angeles in November – also in a “secret location”. Tickets to the Los Angeles show are available for $ 44.90 each. Details on dates and a location for an exhibition in Chicago will be released shortly.

Immersive Van Gogh, a creator of the blockbuster exhibition that was seen by over two million people in Paris, invites the audience to “step into” the iconic works of van Gogh and discover his highly emotional and chaotic inner consciousness through art, light, Music, movement and movement evoke imagination. Using the unique architecture of SVN West and over 500,000 cubic feet of projections, the exhibition features breathtaking projections illuminating Van Gogh’s over 2,000 lifetime catalog of masterpieces, including Mangeurs de pommes de terre (The Potato Eaters, 1885), Nuit étoilée (Starry Night), 1889), Les Tournesols (Sunflowers, 1888) and La Chambre à coucher (The Bedroom, 1889). His paintings are presented as the artist first saw the scenes in which they are based on active life and moving landscapes turned into sharp but sweeping brushstrokes. Immersive Van Gogh was designed by Italian film producer and creator Massimiliano Siccardi with original, atmospheric music by Italian multimedia composer Luca Longobardi, who provided a score that combines experimental electronic music with pure, ethereal and simple-looking piano. Vittorio Guidotti is the art director.

Action in the art world over the past 12 months has been marked by closings, cancellations, postponements and filming of online shows and performances as COVID-19 security measures have required most personal venues to be closed for extended periods of time.

However, now is the time to turn the script around. Some museums and outdoor venues are reopening or planning to reopen as news of vaccinations and new COVID cases wane.

And in all these steps Vincent van Gogh. Or at least some of his most famous paintings.

Immersive Van Gogh, a touring multimedia exhibition and worldwide sensation, opens in San Francisco on Thursday. The exhibition uses art, light, music, movement and, perhaps most importantly, imagination to shed light on the life and art of the great post-impressionist painter of the 19th century.

The highly anticipated Immersive Van Gogh, which some see as the first major touring arts event in the Bay Area since the pandemic began, is celebrating its west coast premiere at SVN West in San Francisco, South Van Ness and Marktstrasse. With strong ticket sales, Bay Area residents are eager to see live art again and have urged organizers to extend the show, which is now set to run until September 6th in SF.

“We’re thrilled to be able to do one of the first things in a safe way for people during COVID,” says co-producer Corey Ross. “We’ve been with us since July when we opened in Toronto. Just the public reaction to getting out of the house and doing something like we do with the social distancing and the masks and in a way that makes people feel safe has been great for both the public and the public worthwhile being a producer and seeing the public receive it. “

The word “immersive” in the title underscores the fact that this is not a typical exhibition, but a multi-sensory way to “enter” such iconic Van Gogh paintings as “Mangeurs de pommes de terre” (The Potato Eaters, 1885). , “Nuit étoilée” (Starry Night, 1889), “Les Tournesols” (Sunflowers, 1888) and “La Chambre à coucher” (The bedroom, 1889). Large-format projections of over 2,000 works by the artist are shown throughout the historic venue, where legendary concert promoter Bill Grahams Fillmore West lived from 1968 to 1971. In total, the exhibition consumes over half a million cubic feet of projections.

The walk-through exhibit, related to an earlier, much-acclaimed Van Gogh show in Paris, opened in Toronto this summer. It hit Chicago earlier this year with plans to open in Los Angeles in May and New York in June. And it was a huge hit, despite concerns about the pandemic, as producers devised ways to make it a socially distancing-friendly experience and incorporate other safety procedures.

“We found out very early on how exactly to hold an event during COVID and how to conduct it safely,” says Ross. “We take temperatures. Everyone wears masks. We have created social distance circles that are projected directly into the art. As part of the floor projection, there are circles that lead people and keep them away from each other.

“What happens is that you come to the exhibition and find your first circle. Then when the circle next to you empties while people are moving, you have the experience of moving around the room and everyone is safely distant. “

The exhibit also uses hands-free ticketing, timed entry, and strict capacity limits that are in line with city and county San Francisco guidelines. There are also hand sanitizer stations, although some people may not even use them.

“You can come through our exhibition and there is nothing to touch,” says Ross. “You don’t have to wear VR glasses or touch buttons or anything like that. You can get through our show with your hands in your pockets and socially distance yourself from everyone around you. “

The exhibition was designed by the all-rounder Massimiliano Siccardi, who has long been active in the field of fine arts.

“He’s done massive installations in Europe over the past 30 years,” says Ross. “He really is the Steven Spielberg of art installations in Europe.”

Siccardi was also a co-founder of the earlier Van Gogh exhibition in Paris, which Ross describes as a “great success”.

“When we met with (Siccardi) and said we wanted to be his producers, we said, ‘What do you want to do?'” Says Ross. “And he said he would like to take Van Gogh back on – very differently than in Paris. A little darker, a little more nervous and a little more emotional than what we saw in Paris. “

It turned out to be an inspired idea that registered with people amid this coronavirus crisis.

“I think Van Gogh – at this time of the pandemic – is really an amazing choice,” says Ross. “Because van Gogh had this very difficult life. He was isolated. He was depressed. He couldn’t finish what he wanted. And ultimately he was suicidal. A lot of those emotions – a lot of those frustrations, depression, and isolation – are things anyone can relate to getting through the epidemic the way we did.

“But van Gogh’s art ultimately goes beyond the horrific times he had in his life. This transcendence of art – and the fact that we look at it 130 years after Van Gogh’s death and it still moves us and is still relevant – is cathartic in these times. With people coming out of isolation – and this is one of the first things they do out of this situation – there really couldn’t be a more perfect artist we could have chosen. “

Action in the art world over the past 12 months has been marked by closings, cancellations, postponements and the move to online content as security precautions regarding the transmission of COVID-19 required most personal venues to close for extended periods of time.

Now, however, it’s time to turn the script around and talk about something exciting and new – Immersive Van Gogh, a multimedia exhibition that uses art, light, music, movement and, perhaps most importantly, fantasy to illuminate life and the world art of the great painter Vincent van Gogh.

The highly anticipated Immersive Van Gogh, which some are bringing to the Bay Area as the first major touring arts event since the pandemic began, premieres at the intersection of San Francisco’s SVN West on the west coast of South Van Ness and Market Street .

“He really is the Steven Spielberg of art installations in Europe.

It turned out to be an inspired idea that really caught on with people amid this coronavirus crisis.

It opens on March 18th and runs until September 6th. Timed tickets start at $ 39.99 ($ 24.99 for children 16 and under), www.vangoghsf.com.

“We’re thrilled to be able to do one of the first things in a safe way for people during COVID,” said Corey Ross, co-producer of Immersive Van Gogh. “We’ve been with us since July when we opened in Toronto. Just the public reaction to getting out of the house and doing something like we do with the social distancing and the masks and in a way that makes people feel safe has been great for both the public and the public worthwhile being a producer and seeing the public receive it. “

The word “immersive” in the title underscores the fact that this is not a regular exhibition, but a multi-sensory opportunity to “enter” such iconic Van Gogh paintings as Mangeurs de pommes de terre (The Potato Eaters, 1885), Nuit, étoilée (Starry Night, 1889), Les Tournesols (Sunflowers, 1888) and La Chambre à coucher (The Bedroom, 1889). Large-format projections of over 2,000 works by the artist are shown throughout the historic venue, where legendary concert promoter Bill Grahams Fillmore West lived from 1968 to 1971. In total, the exhibition consumes over half a million cubic feet of projections.

The walk-through exhibit, related to an early, much-acclaimed Van Gogh show in Paris, opened in Toronto this summer.
