WARM SPRINGS, Ore. (AP) – The massive Infrastructure Act, signed earlier this year, promises to bring change to Indian tribes, who lack clean water or sanitation, through the largest single infusion of money into Indian land.

That includes $ 3.5 billion for the Indian Federal Health Service, which provides medical care to more than 2 million Native Americans and Alaskans.

It also provides funding for water projects through other federal agencies.

Tribal leaders say funding is welcome but won’t make up for decades of neglect by the U.S. government.

A list of sanitary shortcomings spans more than 1,500 tribal projects, from sewage treatment plants to pipelines.
