This is an interesting matchup as both coaches know each other extremely well. But both teams have been so hot and cold this season, that I’m going to back the team that has the better defense — even though the Chiefs’ buzzsaw ran through them last week. And with a full week to incorporate Christian McCaffrey, I think the Niners cover as road favorites.

The 49ers got a rude awakening against the Chiefs last week in Christian McCaffrey’s debut, but their defense loves going up against Matt Stafford, Cooper Kupp and the Rams’ offense, which has yet to find its footing this season. I’ll take San Francisco on the road in this one.

The Chiefs (4-2) head into Levi’s Stadium to take on the 49ers (3-3) in an interconference clash that also serves as a rematch of Super Bowl LIV. Both teams come looking to rebound from Week 6 losses – Kansas City dropped a 24-20 decision at Arrowhead Stadium to the Bills, while San Francisco surprisingly fell to the Falcons by a 28-14 margin on the road.

The 49ers opened as 1.5-point underdogs when the line was first released last week, and the number had seen an interesting trajectory since. The Chiefs saw their projected advantage swell up to -3 following Week 6 outcomes, but the seismic development of the Christian McCaffrey acquisition by San Francisco predictably had an impact on the number once news broke late Thursday. Even though there still isn’t any certainty as to how many snaps, if any, McCaffrey will play, the number has taken a dive to as much as -1 as of Saturday morning.

The total has also seen some interesting movement, opening at a relatively modest 47.5 before dipping all the way to 46 in the immediate aftermath of Week 6. However, the number began an ascension shortly thereafter and has gotten back up as high as 49 following the McCaffrey news. These two teams combined for 50 points back in Super Bowl LIV while being led by the same quarterbacks, although a vital offensive weapon for KC, Tyreek Hill, is naturally no longer on the roster.

Kansas City Chiefs at San Francisco 49ers Betting Picks This Week

Concerns about the Chiefs being a much less potent offense without Tyreek Hill have largely proven unfounded through the first six games of the season, as Patrick Mahomes has proven he is unquestionably the one indispensable cog in the offensive machine. Mahomes is averaging 289.3 passing yards per game and owns a 17:4 TD:INT, but he does have a thorny matchup on his hands in this Week 7 interconference clash. The 49ers defense has been elite for the most part, and even last week’s surprising upset came with San Fran missing a slew of key players on that side of the ball.

The good news for the Niners is that Nick Bosa and Jimmie Ward both return for this key showdown, which should make a significant impact. San Francisco already comes in allowing the second-fewest passing yards per game (168.3) and yards per completion (8.3), and the Niners have also compiled the second-most sacks (23). Mahomes has been protected pretty well (11 sacks in six games), but KC’s offensive line will be facing pressure like it hasn’t seen all season, even versus Buffalo.

While Andy Reid doesn’t pay much mind to his running game unless he’s forced to, it’s also worth noting he’s unlikely to find much success whenever he does try to deploy his ground forces. The Niners are essentially just as difficult to run on as they are to pass against, coming in allowing an AFC-low 87.5 rushing yards per game and 3.1 RB yards per carry. San Fran also ranks No. 1 in both second-level and open-field yards allowed, making chunk plays against them on the ground virtually non-existent.

Meanwhile, the matchup shapes a bit more palatable for the Niners offense, with or without McCaffrey’s services. The Chiefs have allowed 266 passing yards per game, including 304.7 per contest in the last three. KC is also giving up an elevated 10.8 yards per completion in that latter span, while Jimmy Garoppolo has a fully healthy pass-catching corps at his disposal and is coming off having thrown for a season-high 296 yards against the Falcons.

Jeff Wilson is certainly no slouch, so if McCaffrey sits out altogether or has a very limited role, the Niners running game will still be in fine shape. Wilson is averaging 4.9 yards per carry and had gained at least 74 rushing yards in four consecutive starts before being limited to seven carries in Week 6 due to game script. The Chiefs have been tougher against the run than the pass, but they’re still allowing 4.2 RB yards per carry and hold a No. 23 ranking in second-level yards allowed. KC also is the most generous team in the league in terms of allowing receiving production to RBs, giving up an NFL-high 56 receptions and 390 receiving yards to the position.

The Niners, and their fan base for that matter, are undoubtedly reinvigorated by the McCaffrey acquisition and also hungry to atone for the ugly Week 6 loss. San Fran’s defense should be in much better health and form, and it will help keep matters very close at home, if not lead the Niners to an outright upset.

As mentioned, the 49ers get some key players on defense back this week, and that should make a significant difference. San Francisco should be able to hit some plays through the air against what has been an inconsistent Chiefs secondary, and KC’s passing attack, while potent, should have similar difficulty establishing series-to-series rhythm as it did for stretches of the Week 6 loss to the Bills.

San Francisco can be so mercurial and I still have the Chiefs as one of the three best teams in the NFL, despite their close loss to the Bills. Kansas City doesn’t tend to lose consecutive games under Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes and because the Niners’ defense is as banged up as it is, it’s easy to see KC putting up points and covering, despite being on the road.

For example, the Giants Hitters rank 11th or better compared to left-handed pitching in advanced hitting metrics like wRC +, wOBA, BB / K, and OPS, while the Cardinals Batters sit in the bottom 10 vs. righties on each of these stats.

Additionally, the San Francisco bullpen is pretty mediocre, but St. Louis ranks last on xFIP, SIERA, and K-BB%.

Eventually, the market is hammering the San Francisco money line, which has resulted in the quota makers raising the Giants’ price by 20 cents against the dollar from the opening price due to their liability to pro-San Francisco action.

If you look under the hood of DeSclafani’s home numbers, you’ll find that he’s much better off than his base numbers suggest, and he’s due for a solid home breakout.

For example, DeSclafani has a 4.24 ERA at home and a 2.14 ERA on the road this season, but DeSclafani’s xFIP, K-BB%, and Home Run per nine innings are all better in San Francisco.

However, DeSclafani’s .289 BAbip at home (0.212 BAbip on the go) and 62.1% of the link at home (91.1% LOB% on the go) show that he was simply unlucky in San Francisco.

The opposite is the case with Lester’s home / street splits, as his pitching periphery is much worse away than at home. In fact, Lester has an 8.53 FIP on the road and a minus -1K-BB%.

What I’m getting at is this GIANTS (-200) is a fair price I would bet 1 piece on. If your standard unit is $ 100 I’d bet it GIANTS (-200) to hopefully make a profit of $ 50.

Also, I want to limit my handicap to the first 5 innings because while the Dodgers can lead the majors in blown saves at 14, the Giants are runner-up at 13.

San Francisco 49ers 2021 NFL Draft: Niners’ remaining picks going into Day 3

The San Francisco 49ers selected two offensive players with their first two picks in the 2021 NFL Draft.

It was no secret that after the trade, the Niners would take a QB to get the number 3 among the Miami Dolphins. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan and General Manager John Lynch selected North Dakota State’s Trey Lance to be the QB of the Future Franchise.

San Francisco originally held number 43 overall but struck a deal with the Las Vegas Raiders to move five spots back to 48th, costing them the opportunity to draw cornerback Asante Samuel Jr., who finished a 47th. Place went to Los Angeles chargers.

The 49ers took advantage of the selection to improve the inside of the offensive line by going with Notre Banks guard Aaron Banks.

Here’s Pro Football Focus’s report on banks:

Aaron Banks was heavily recruited as a four-star offensive lineman at El Cerrito High School, California. He has received more than 30 scholarship offers including Notre Dame, Michigan, Oregon, Arizona, and Arizona State. After his senior season in 2016, he was honored several times in the first team and paved the way for an offense against El Cerrito that averaged 29.4 points per game.

Banks broke into the Irish starting line-up in the middle of the 2018 season and has been a mainstay of the Left Guard ever since. He’s a big boy who will only be on watch at the NFL level despite being Notre Dame’s emergency device. While he’s had quality pass protection for three years, he doesn’t have the foot speed or anchor to believe it will stay that way at the NFL level. Even with his size, you rarely see him bringing guys from the frontier. I struggle to call someone with a cap, but as tech-savvy Banks is already, I’m not sure where he’s going from here.

Lynch then decided it was time to act. The Niners sent their own fourth round picks, as well as the fourth round picks they received from the Raiders, to the Los Angeles Rams for the 88th pick.

San Francisco decided to bolster its backcourt by picking the state of Ohio, which returned Trey Sermon.

Sermon played three seasons in Oklahoma, racing 339 times for 2,076 yards (6.1 ypc) and 22 TDs

Lynch and Shanahan eventually decided to target secondary school with their compensatory selection at 102nd place. The 49ers went with Michigan cornerback Ambry Thomas.

Ambry Thomas projects as a potential corner kick for an NFL franchise. You certainly wish you had the chance to watch Thomas’ game in 2020, but the Michigan product was disabled prior to the start of the season due to the uncertainties surrounding the Big Ten season and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Thomas has been most effective at reporting in the press and interrupting route releases in the contact window – he’s a physical gamer who does well getting his hands on the receiver and upsetting the timing of patterns. Thomas also flashes quite strongly in flat spaces as a flat defender in the zone coverage; shows a good awareness of games that develop underneath to drive back to football. The upper limit of Thomas in the draft depends directly on how comfortable the teams are with a “Redshirt” season 2020 and how he stands on his tape from the previous year.
